New Venue: The Venue
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Venue was a complete dive on Whitworth Street West where I spent most of my Friday and Saturday nights from 1998 to 2000. Sometimes the club was busy as hell, other times there were less than 10 people in there. I never understood that, and I didn't really care either. It was all about cheap drinks and awaiting midnight - the DJ had a set playlist which was mostly Indie and Madchester tunes, but he was 'allowed' three dance tracks when the clock hit twelve. At ten past the music switched back to Indie, and the dancing was adjusted accordingly. The club closed back in 2002, so my ears pricked up when I heard of a new venue opening under the same name on Jacksons Row (off Deansgate). Seemingly unrelated, and run by 42nd Street, The Venue is now open and offering four nights of indie, rock and dance - perhaps, I hope, more than just three tracks of the latter.Tuesday nights are 'The Alternative' which is Indie with a rock twist, Thursdays are 'In The City' (with a flyer that loo

Save Manchester 235
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Another day, another venue gone. Teasers on Peter Street looks to have gone tits-up, as the doors are always locked and the phones have been disconnected. Never a good sign!Their Amsterdam venue closed down last year, but their only UK branch had recently undergone a refurb and looked to be heading out of trouble. Oops. The bar is located within the not so Great Northern Warehouse - a giant leisure complex that pales in comparison to the Printworks, which is embarassing enough. Relish and the Manchester 235 casino complex are the only reasons why you'd want to go in here, although the cinema is great if you want to avoid the queues (and there's free parking). The recent announcement of the Manchester Super Casino was an unexpected kick in the teeth for Manchester 235 (and judging by their two page ads in the MEN, the know it!). It's actually a decent enough place to go, and it's going to be a few years before you can gamble over at Eastlands. If they listen to me then they can turn t

Manc Meddler: Shane Ritchie Is Going To Die
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The hand written letter found in Shane Ritchie 's Manchester apartment painted a bleak picture."This world is too much for me. I can't go on with all the disastrous things that keep happening around me"The piece of paper was found by the sneaky concerned owner of a flat he was staying in on Princess Street. Realising that she was possibly Shane's last hope, the un-named woman decided to ring his boss, as you do. The conversation probably went something like this:"Hello ITV? I think Shane Ritchie is going to kill himself""Are you sure?""Yes, he's staying at my apartment in Manchester. I'd let myself in for no apparent reason and I found a suicide note"Of course the note was a prop for Shane's new show 'The Good Samaritan', and the bosses at ITV had a good laugh as Shane isn't suicidal at all. Well he might be, but that's not his note.Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

First look at pure
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I got a sneeky peek at the new Pure club in the Printworks from Simon Morrison (A member of the old guard of Mancunian PR's, who runs the Sketchpad PR Agency). The huge venue holds a whopping 2,600 - the biggest in Manchester - and Simon was honest about the type of crowd they're expecting. Saturdays will be full on 'Printworks' but their plans for their Friday nights do sound interesting. Hed Kandi opens on the 30th - not exactly underground, but I don't mind their CD's as party music and I'm sure it'll be a decent experience hearing them on the Phazon. I asked about the direction the Friday nights would take and I was given the names of three DJs lined up to play in October and November. I won't name them, as they're all TBC's rather than TBA's, but they were big. Some literally. It'll be interesting to see how the Friday nights develop, and there was talk of live music at the venue - backed up by the three dressing rooms, complete with en-suite showers. The rest of the ve

Shock Horror! One Central in celebrity photoshop madness
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The lovely Rachel at One Central Street can add another string to her bow. Not only does she run a swish bar, which counts Ricky Hatton, Vernon Kay, Shaun Ryder and Mick Hucknall as regulars (plus a load of the hollyoaks lot, but they don't count till they get a real job), but she is also highly persuasive! So much so that she convinced the Manchester Evening News to drop the standard frontpage (Parking! Casino!) and replace it with a huge advert for Funkademia.Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

One in one out: Another new venue for Manchester
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The girls and boys at Ithaca have been awful quiet lately! Are they still going to open their £3million bar/club/restaurants on John Dalton Street? After the licensing set-back, they may be having second thoughts...or they could be appealing the license. Bit more info here - if you can't be bothered reading the history then Ithaca went up against God (or at least a Canon, who acts on behalf of god) and they lost. Their request for a 4AM license was revoked, they got all pissed off (fair enough) and went quiet. As much as I slated them, I'd still like to see them open....if only for the see thru floor.Never mind, as word reaches us that Oceana are to open up in the Greater Northern Warehouse. This chain-club has already got outlets in Leeds, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Bristol and Birmingham and they want to bring their mass-market take on clubbing to Manchester. No doubt Pure, M2 and Opus are squarely in their sights, and they're smart enough to realise that the Peter Street Brigade

Bloggers Beware: PKBlogs
1970-01-01 00:59:59
PKblogs.com is a 'blog gateway' that allows you to bypass any censorship and view a Blogger.com blog - this is particularly useful for China and India which have had a blanket ban on Blogger.com content. The trouble is that PKBlogs presents the information to the search engines (accessed via the URL www.pkblogs.com/YOUR-BLOG-NAME), which means that they could easily hurt your SEO rankings (Duplicate Content Issue - Google should work things out, but frankly I dont like to leave things to chance). pkblogs.com/manchester-clubbing has already been spidered by Google. The cheeky bastards also change the ad channel on your google adsense ads, so they look exactly the same as on your blog but THEY get the money! All the permalinks go back to the phblogs.com domain.Frankly I couldn't give a rats ass about their service, since I write for the UK and not for any censored market. I've fired off an email to PKBlogs asking them to remove my content and to block anyone from using their service f

Magazine Error: Timed Out
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Manchester Magazine Curse strikes again....The Manchizzle blog has some goss on Time Out, which had a 'soft launch' last year during the Labour Party Conference. That should probably read 'safe launch', as there aren't many mags that piggyback on a political event like that in order to guarantee circulation. I guess that's how they do things in London.Well they can't afford to launch the Manchester mag yet ("We are still in the process of raising investment. We need about £1m")£1million?? Can't raise it??What kind of local listings mag needs a million pounds to launch? And what kind of international media company struggles to raise a million?"We just do not have the liquidity to set it up on our own, though we have always said we really wanted to run Manchester ourselves"Translation: "It's too big a risk for us to shoulder, but I can deflect you away from this point by calling myself a potential liar."Sigh. These questions are sure to be answered when Time Out hits the s

Jimmy Bell: Q&A

Jimmy Bell is playing at Venus this Saturday, and we managed to catch up with him for five minutes of Q&As.1. Favourite club in ManchesterI like ROMP 'Thursdays' at One Central Street and of course...Venus! 2. Best clubbing experienceHeadlining the Supperclub in San Fransisco with DJ Magazine 3. How did your DJing career start?Way back in 1996 after listening to the likes of Graeme Park and Allister Whitehead, who were rocking Manchester at the time. 4. How has the last year fared for you?I have recently had some of my group's records signed to a major label in london, which is a bonus.. and I've travelled a lot more overseas, playing at venues that are much bigger than the ones I played at last year! 5. Where will you be in 12 months time?I'm aiming to continue making good underground house music in the studio and playing at the new Supperclub opening in Los Angeles... 6. What was your worst gig EVER. - That was a party in Amsterdam on the supperclub cruise boat. It travelled ou

SCOOP!This rather unique venue is slated to open in 2007, and it doesn't just look different - it's going to be run differently too!"Butterfly will be anything from a Bar/venue to a Fashion show or art exhibition depending on the client renting out the space."These concept images will no doubt undergo a nip and tuck before the venue opens, but the team behind the wacky designs are deadly serious about their innovations."The modular stairs are an element which can create seating and catwalks and stage/walls etc. The eliptical cusions are housed within an aluminium case, they are basically tables and seating which can also create cell structure dividers""The cocoon seating pods are on a wheel base and can be flipped on their sides to create a stage and platforms (podiums) but they can also be wheeled out to create partitions and walls for art shows/projections"If you're wondering where this visual head-fuck will be opening, then you'll have to stay tuned. Ithaca: It will go ahead, it won't stay open late
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Speak of the devil! It was only the other day that I pondered what had happened to Ithaca , the £3 4 3.6million restaurants/bar/club that was slated to open in Jan 07. They'd hit a snag with the licensing as the bar backs on to the historic 'Hidden Gem' church, and there was concerns about noise pollution. This prompted a staggering 8,000 people to sign a petition.Last year the licensing authorities took the side of the Church and slapped Ithaca down. The bar was seeking a 4am license, but they were told that it was going to be '1am or nothing'. McrOnline are reporting that they won't be appealing this decision, and they're slated to open in April.Father Michael Walsh spoke to us on behalf of the Hidden Gem last year, and discussed the furore surrounding the licensing, and the ugly 'church bashing' that one of our more learned rivals took part in. The Church never has, or had, an issue with a bar opening up nearby, but - he stresed - it has a responsibility to protect itself,

Sankeys Is History
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Not content with already leaving an indelible mark on the UK club scene Sankeys have gone one step further, the Manchester institution is really becoming a part of history. The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester launched an appeal, and a new exhibition opens today, to encourage local people to come forward with their own personal stories of working in the city's manufacturing and textile industries. You might wonder where the link is to raving all night long to techno and house, but before Sankeys was a club it had a very different role - soap. Of course for some the Sankeys Soap name merely seemed like a late-night dreamt-up moniker, but the real history of the building overall was many years spent making the bubbly stuff that kept many millions clean throughout the United Kingdom and was a key part of starting the industrial revolution.Sankeys itself was founded in the late eighties, enjoying a second incarnation which was a bold move for all concerned. Suffering from Congestion? Take one very large casino....
2007-03-02 03:50:00
The spotlight is on Manchester's winning bid for the first Super Casino and the heat is on the government to reverse their decision. The chances of this are slim, and the Super Casino is destined to stay. Blackpool deserves it, but it's not going to happen. There's a good reason why we should be cheering that. Forget about the jobs, the money and the redevelopment of Eastlands....The Government Loves Manchester!Manchester's got a hell of a successful past. We put on the Commonwealth Games and everything went smoothly. The redevelopment of the City Centre has gone well - with a few notable exceptions - and we were graceful enough to let Salford win a BBC building. We don't mind! We'll turn their old offices on Oxford Road in to award winning apartments. Our public transport is great, if a little OTT at times, and we have an awesome nightlife. We built the UK's tallest residential tower, and we did it on time. It's still standing. almost six months later. The government needs suc

Spiked or Misguided: Shopkeeper on Ket
2007-03-05 11:27:00
Did you read the NOTW yesterday? This gem was on the front page, and since they delete their old stories each week I've copied and pasted it below. (BTW this story is 'alleged', and it has the hallmarks of a spiking. Who in their right mind takes horse tranqulizer at a charity gig? At least start on crack and work your way up.)THIS is the depraved, shameful moment drug-numbed Corrie favourite Jimmi Harkishin chucks his career down the pan. Hunched and trembling in the corner of a club, loo roll at his feet, he vomits into a red bucket in front of shocked children's charity night guests. As he hold his head in his hands and drools spittle, the actor is barely conscious after taking the hallucinogenic drug ketamine, a powerful horse tranquiliser. But minutes after our exclusive pictures were taken his condition worsened dramatically. Jimmi — womanising shopkeeper Dev in the soap — collapsed completely and had to be carried unconscious by bouncers into a back room. One onlooker sai

The Circle: Revolution not Evolution.
2007-03-05 11:18:00
Wow, what's happening with the Circle Club?Last Summer they underwent a revamp at the behest of the new owners, some London boys who had huge plans for the club. Roll forward nine months and the place has gone seriously downhill.A refurbishment has 'improved' the look and feel of the place, at least in the new bar area, but the drinks prices have shot up and they're somewhat snide about their 2-for-1 drinks offers. A student friend complained about being woken up at 9am by a telephone call from the Circle. "Would you like to gain access to Manchester's premier media members bar for half price" said the voice. "No", replied the weary fashion student, "but thank you for waking me up". Go back three years and The Circle was the place to be. Cheap drinks, and a crowd that ranged from the 18yr old dolly birds to the 50 year old MD's. This alone gave the place a unique atmosphere, and there was a genuine buzz in there each Friday and Saturday night. I loved the place, even when that sm

Manchester Magazines on the Down Low(d)

If you head to your local newsagent to look for a mag that gives you the low down on Manchester then prepare to be disappointed. City life has gone, The North West Enquirer went titsssssup and Time Out only managed to squeeze one issue out of their journalistic bowels.Thankfully there are Manchester mags out there that you can download for free! Ok ok, they're not strictly listings magazines but here's some links for you to while away your afternoon.BrashMag has all their old back issues available to download (hit their site and scroll down to the bottom).Hot Village, from the same stable as that Hot Manchester magazine (VOMIT) let you download their latest issue here. The sheer number of oiled up men is astonishing, and puts my sleazy ways (1 2) to shame.'MIX' is the name of the Midas funded magazine (hence a bit yawnsome). I guess it's aimed at investors, or snooty tourists, but their front cover gave me a laugh:Take a closer look at Ramsbottom, Appley Bridge, Littleborough and
