Optic Neuritis
2007-09-05 00:30:29
Optic Neuritis is inflammation and demyelination of the optic nerve. Symptoms include when vision, loss of visual acuity or sharpness, partial blindness, pain behind the eye, and changing color vision. While there are several causes of optic neuritis, it is the single most common initial symptom of multiple sclerosis. The majority of optic neuritis cases occur in only one eye. Optic Neuritis usually affects people between the ages of 15 and 50 years old. Within this age group, it has been shown that over half of all patients who develop optic neuritis will be diagnosed with multiple sclerosis within 15 years. Optic neuritis is more common people of European descent. Women have double the risk of men developing optic neuritis. Loss of visual acuity affects over half of those with optic neuritis. This ranges from complete blindness to barely noticeable blurring of vision. Eye pain is described as an overall achiness behind the eye. Some people experience a headache behind the effected

Beta Carotene: Learn The Basics Of This Cancer-Fighting Vitamin
2007-09-04 10:00:27
If your diet is low in carotene-abundant foods (fruits and vegetables) then you may be at an increased risk of heart disease and certain cancers. These cancers may include colon cancer, stomach cancer, lung cancer, and cervix cancer. Inadequate amounts of beta carotene in the body's system may also lower the effectiveness of it's immune system boosting abilities. This creates a lowered defense system within the body and attracts ill effects of health. What is the daily recommended intake of beta carotene? Beta carotene does not have an established RDA. However, there are of course a few recommendations by several groups. One of these groups is called the "Alliance For Aging Research" and it is a non-profit group that is made up of highly respected researchers in the field of nutrition. They are also the very first group that suggested a daily recommendation of beta carotene intake. And that intake amount is recorded as 10 - 30 mg daily for the promotion of better

Aspartame and Bad Breath
2007-09-26 20:45:13
Have you heard or read about the issues on aspartame and bad breath? Numerous researches have found out that aspartame and bad breath are related in a way that aspartame causes bad breath. Well, you may find this unbelievable though as aspartame is one of the most commonly used ingredients in some chewing gums and mints that are deemed to reduce bad breath. Unfortunately, that is not what most of the scientifically advanced studies have found out. Aspartame is said to be harmful not only to your breath, but more to your health. But, what really is aspartame? How are aspartame and bad breath closely related? Aspartame is in the first place the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Spoonful, Equal-Measure and Equal. It was accidentally discovered by James Schlatter in 1965 when he was testing an anti-ulcer drug. It was approved in the 1981 for dry goods and for carbonated beverages in 1983, but according to some reports, aspartame was originally approved for dry goods on July

Acid Reflux Pain Often Mistaken For Heart Attack
2007-09-25 22:45:12
The potential health risks associated with untreated indigestion are well documented, but acid reflux pain should serve as a strong reminder of those suffering from it, that they need to do something to correct the condition. The acid reflux pain is usually caused by stomach acid being refluxed into the esophagus and irritating its lining. It is typically a severe burning sensation that will seldom subside on its own. The use of antacid tablets or other over-the-counter medication can often lessen the severity of the acid reflux pain but if left to linger for days it is strong enough to burn a hole through the lining of the esophagus. Easing past the lower esophageal sphincter is common with acid reflux, but when it flows continually upwards and makes it way through the upper esophageal sphincter, the pain in the throat may spread into the larynx and can cause acid reflux pain to radiate in to the ears. It is not uncommon for those with indigestion to experience such severe acid reflu

Benefits of assist dogs
2007-09-25 09:15:12
The majority of people with multiple sclerosis never develop total disability. However, almost everyone with MS develops some type of disability. On days you are dizzy, off balance or in pain, or experiencing other symptoms, you need a little help. An assistance dog may be of great help in these cases. Most people equate assist animals with seeing eye dogs. But, it is possible train a dog to help with physical problems, as well. A dog can be taught to pick up something off the floor, retrieve the telephone, or even a person. For those with balance issues, a larger dog can be taught to let the person lean on them. The dog can then help guide their person. Around the house, an assist dog may turn on lights, carry a plate, get an object or family member, or help their person get dressed. Some dogs can even be taught to help pull a wheelchair. In public, a physical assist dog can get something from a shelf, hold keys or other objects or help their person maneuver through a crowded store.

Vitamin D and Healthy Bones
2007-09-24 15:00:57
Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining healthy bones. It may not matter how much calcium you're consuming if you aren't getting enough vitamin D. Both of them are very closely related. Production of vitamin D Casual exposure to sun for a short duration say 5 to 15 minutes is more than enough to produce vitamin D. This fat-soluble vitamin gets stored in the adipose tissue of an individual. During the lean months of sunshine, the stored vitamin will be released for the body's use. Sunlight will typically provide enough vitamin D to adults and healthy children. However, if you do not consume milk o or are a vegetarian and do not live in an area with a lot of light during the day, then you must consult your health care provider to find out if you can get enough vitamin D through a diet change or if a multivitamin is best for you. It is also important to note that an adequate amount of vitamin D and calcium is especially important for seniors and may even reduce

Type 2 Diabetes: Diet Tips For Good Health
2007-09-23 15:30:31
If you suffer from type 2 diabetes, then overcoming poor diet habits should be at the top of your list when it comes to maintaining good health and taking preventive measures against further complications. Since the majority of men and women who have type 2 diabetes are overweight, it should go without saying that weight control and weight loss should be taken into serious consideration. How fast can losing weight benefit a type 2 diabetic? Even if a person only loses a small amount of weight as a diabetic, the benefits of this weight loss can be dramatic. The results are seen almost immediately. For example, your blood glucose levels will fall at a rapid pace. Blood pressure begins to decline and can stay at a healthier level if this weight loss is maintained. And your triglycerides drop practically overnight, while HDL (good cholesterol) rises. If the above benefits aren't enough to get you to start paying more attention to your body fat levels, then consider the fact that even

Beta Carotene: A Detailed Look At This Amazing Antioxidant
2007-10-01 12:45:14
There are just over 560 carotenoids that are found in the dark green, dark orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables - and beta carotene is one of them. Other carotenoids include alpha carotene, lycopene, as well as canthaxanthin. However, beta carotene is the one carotenoid that is most easily converted to vitamin A by the body. Even though researchers have known since the early times of this century that this substance found in plants (beta carotene) could be converted over to vitamin A by the body, it was not until the early 1980's that research provided the proof that beta carotene had functions that were separate from its role with vitamin A. Over the past two decades, we have learned more about the interrelation between vitamin A and beta carotene. But moreover, we possess the knowledge from studies that now show that beta carotene enhances health and provides disease-prevention. This includes strengthening the immune system, antioxidant functions, cancer prevention, and cel

Cancer Nutrition
2007-10-01 03:45:13
Cancer nutrition. Diet is an essential element in treating cancer. The individual who has cancer must eat right kinds of food before and after treatment. To guarantee that one is eating proper cancer nutrition, one must eat adequate amounts of food and drinks that contain main nutrients (like the right kind of vitamins, minerals, proteins, fat, water and carbohydrates). On the other hand, some patients find it hard to eat well due to the side effects of the treatment. The most common symptoms of this are: anorexia, nausea, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting. Mouth sores, pain and trouble swallowing are also included. Loss of appetite, smell, taste and ability to eat enough food are also affected. As a result of all these is malnutrition (deficiency in key nutrients) among cancer patients. This would make the patient appear tired and weak. This would also make them unable to withstand cancer therapy and resist infections. Inadequate protein and calorie intake is the most common cancer

What is Tachycardia?

This condition can occur naturally, such as when you are exercising resulting in the heart rate being accelerated Tachycardia can also cause life threatening and serious heart problems. There are a variety of ways in which the heart normally increases its tempo. These include exercise, fever or if the person is anxious or excited. Problems with the heart that can cause tachycardia are varied. Atrial Fibrillation is an abnormal pattern where the right and left atria (upper heart chambers) are contracting irregularly thus making the heart beat faster. Mistral Valve Prolapse is when one of the valves in the heart has a mid deformity, thus causing a

Liquid vitamins reality and myth
2007-10-15 10:47:45
Several amazing claims have been made public regarding the different brands of liquid vitamins released on the market. Liquid vitamins were supposed to be the greatest step forward since the research into the benefits offered by taking vitamins first began. The reality is a little bit different depending on some specific factors relating to the people who choose liquid vitamins instead of other types. One of the advantages of liquid vitamins is the fact that they seem to be an advantage for people who can't swallow any type of tablet or pill; therefore liquid vitamins are the best solution in this case. Most of the people dealing with this type of problem are children and seniors. On the other hand, one of the possible disadvantages of liquids is their contact with stomach acids, which are very strong and usually dilute or destroy everything they come across. This turns out to be a problem because vitamins are best absorbed in the upper intestine and nutrients are already dissol

Herbal supplements used to treat multiple sclerosis
2007-10-13 13:30:17
Although not recognized in standard allopathic medicine, the use of herbal supplements can be very useful in treat ing MS. Fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory. In addition to treating inflammation caused by multiple sclerosis, fish oil also may have the ability to assist in myelin repair. It is often recommended by alternative medicine practitioners that people with multiple sclerosis take between 3 and 9 grams of fish oil daily, for optimal myelin repair. Some studies have shown that soya lecithin combined with fish oil may further help myelin repair itself after an MS attack. It has been shown that the body needs adequate calcium intake in order to optimize its ability to transmit electrical signals. In addition, some studies have shown that high intake of vitamin D may slow the progression of multiple sclerosis. Therefore, it is recommended that people with MS take a combination of calcium and vitamin D daily. Magnesium and calcium work together to assist electrical signals trav

How Folic Acid Helps Reduce the Risk of Birth Defects
2007-10-10 14:00:18
Nothing is more important that your baby's health and one good way to help ensure that your baby is born healthy is to make sure you are getting enough folic acid. It has been proven to help prevent very serious birth defects of the brain and spine. What can happen? As mentioned earlier, very serious brain and spine defects can occur in newborns without the proper amount of folic acid. The most common defect is spina bifida. This is a condition where the spinal cord is actually partway outside of the body. Babies with spina bifida are often paralyzed and may have or develop problems controlling his or her bodily functions. However, the physical problem of the protruding spine is typically fixed surgically very soon after birth. The most serious problem that may be cause by a lack of folic acid is anencephaly. Very simply put, this is a condition where the skull and brain does not fully develop. If the baby is not stillborn, which is very common with anencephaly, the baby w

Frequent Bad Breath in Children
2007-10-09 22:30:19
Bad breath affects children in the same way it affects adults. It is not necessarily a sign of a more serious health condition though, but a frequent bad breath in children can be distressing not only for the child, but for the parents too. There are a number of causes associated with frequent bad breath in children. Some medical researches have noted that a frequent bad breath in children may be caused normally by mouth breathing due to colds, allergies, sinus infections, or enlargement of tonsils blocking the nasal passages; dehydration; thumb sucking; increased bacterial activity in the mouth at night; infrequent snacking and drinking throughout the day; and improper brushing. All of these are deemed culprits for the reason that they tend to cause mouth drying, which in turn allows the increase of the number of bacteria in the mouth resulting to a stinky breath. Knowing the culprits, it is now so far understandable that the real root of frequent bad breath in children is mouth dryi

When to tell your employer that you have MS
2007-10-09 13:00:19
Deciding when to tell your employer of your MS diagnosis is easily as important as deciding when to tell your family. Under ADA rules you do not have to disclose an illness unless it causes a significant challenge in the workplace, or if you are requesting accommodations such as specific equipment or altered work times. However, multiple sclerosis is unpredictable and while you may be fine today, it is possible for a new symptom to start while you're at work. The best time to inform your employer of the diagnosis may be when you are symptom-free. Arm yourself with information about your illness so that you can reassure your employer and provide needed information. Explain to your employer the unpredictable nature of multiple sclerosis. If you have been working with your company for a long time, then you may be able to reference a past flare-up in the workplace. For example, Do You Remember a Year Ago when I used a cane because my leg was numb? That was an MS flare-up. Consider

What Causes Angina?
2007-10-09 05:45:08
Angina is caused by reduced blood flow to an area of the heart. This is most often due to Coronary Artery Disease. Sometimes, other types of heart disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause angina. In CAD, the coronary arteries, that carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle, are narrowed, due to the buildup of the fatty deposits called plaque. This is known as artherscholorisis. Some plaque becomes hard and stable, leading to narrowed and hardened arteries. Other plaque is soft and likely to break open and cause blood clots. The buildup of plaque on the inner walls of the arteries can cause angina in two ways. First, by narrowing the artery to the point where the flow of blood is greatly reduced… Second, by forming blood clots which are partially or totally block the artery. Stable Angina is commonly caused by physical exertion. This leads to the pain and discomfort of stable angina. Severely narrowed arteries may allow enough blood to reach the heart when the dem

Why heart disease?
2007-10-09 02:16:26
Heart disease is a term that applies to a large number of medical conditions relating to the heart. These medical conditions relate to the abnormal health conditions that directly affect the heart and all its components. Heart disease is a major health problem within some cultures. One theory for heart disease is the radical changes within our lifestyles. People are often less active and eat diets high in fats. Takeaway food is abundant today and often people will eat it due to the increased availability. Some takeaway outlets are now helping cater to a healthier lifestyle by offering a variety of healthy dishes such as salads. People are becoming more aware of the risk of heart disease and choosing to change their diets. Exercise is extremely important in order to avoid heart disease. Exercise helps to keep the heart in peak performance. By using a combination of exercise and a balanced diet, the risk of heart disease is greatly decreased. 3 Ways Doctors Can Test You For Diabetic Neuropathy (Nerve Damage)
2007-10-08 08:45:08
Because diabetes is such a powerful and dangerous illness, there are many symptoms that stem from this terrible disease. One such example is nerve disease, which is the result of having high blood glucose levels for 10 years or more. Once nerve disease is rooted from diabetes, this is called diabetic neuropathy. In order to diagnose a nerve disorder, a person's nerve conduction velocity (NCV for short) is severely slowed down. Nerve conduction velocity is simply the speed at which nervous impulses travel down a nerve fiber. Unfortunately a person may not show any symptoms for a long time to come even though their body is experiencing slow NCV. Therefore, getting tested to find out the speed of their NCV is a way to diagnose neuropathy in diabetics who are not yet showing symptoms of nerve damage. Medications can then be supplied to the patient and in many cases their nerve symptoms will improve. WARNING: Diabetic neuropathy is most prevalent in men and women over the age of 4

Heart disease in Asia
2007-10-07 20:01:00
Until recently, heart disease was uncommon in Asia n populations. Results from a new study of more than half a million Asians indicate that a large epidemic of heart disease is poised to affect China and many other countries in the region. The study, conducted by professional through China to Australasia, has provided important new evidence. The evidence points to rapidly increased smoking and other health factors that contribute to heart disease. These include diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, particularly in the more urbanized regions of Asia. The results have indicated that unless some drastic changes are made, Asia may be faced with a crippling epidemic of Heart Disease. Results show that in the next twenty years Asia will be faced with a crippling epidemic of heart disease and stroke on a scale previously unknown. Te heart is the center of the body's cardiovascular system. Throughout the body's blood vessels, the heart pumps blood to all of the body

Leaky Gut and Multiple Sclerosis
2007-10-05 08:01:35
No one knows what causes multiple sclerosis. Throughout the world you'll find as many theories on the causes of autoimmune diseases as you'll find researchers. One fairly popular theory states that autoimmune diseases such as asthma, multiple sclerosis, and Lou Gehrig's disease are caused by either a form of leaky gut syndrome or food sensitivities. Leaky gut syndrome occurs when intact proteins passed through small spaces between the intestinal walls and enter into the bloodstream. When this occurs, the immune system is activated into attacking these proteins because to the immune system, intact food proteins is an invader. The problem is that these of food proteins also very closely resemble the tissue of the central nervous system. When the immune system attacks the food protein it also attacks the body's own myelin. The best ways to keep this from occurring are to first, heal the leaky gut in order to slow down and hopefully prevent intact food proteins from en

Defining Acid Reflux Disease
2007-10-05 07:45:17
Acid reflux disease is commonly known as GERD, which is gastro esophageal reflux disease. It is a chronic condition where the acid contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus. If left untreated, this condition can lead to esophageal damage which could require surgery. Once treatment for acid reflux disease has begun it is usually necessary to continue treatment for the rest of your life. There are medications which can help to heal the damage but once discontinued, the damage can reoccur. There are certain conditions which are believed to contribute to acid reflux disease. People with scleraderma often have acid reflux disease as a result of the esophageal muscles being damaged. Scleraderma is a rare disease which causes hardening of the muscles, tissue, and major organs. Another condition is people who have a hiatal hernia often suffer from acid reflux disease. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach attaches to the esophagus. This causes the esophagus to push against
