China to raise reserve requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points 2007-07-31 04:44:54 China will raise
the reserve requirement ratio by half a percentage point to 12 percent for commercial banks from Aug. 15, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) announced on Monday.
“The move does not come as a surprise seeing as almost every economic index is overheating,” said Song Guoqing, an economist with Beijing University.
“However, half a percentage points is not enough — it can’t even absorb the newly-added foreign exchange reserves,” Song added.
“China’s forex reserves go up by about 30 billion U.S. dollars a month while loans of commercial banks totaled 25 trillion yuan at the end of June,” Song explained. “This means that a half-percentage point rise can only absorb 125 billion yuan a month.”
China’s gross domestic product (GDP) rose 11.5 percent in the first half, after it grew 11.9 percent in the second quarter, according to official data.
This is the sixth time China has raised the reserve requirem Read more: China

BOSTON, United States (AFP) - Kevin Garnett was traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Boston Celtics on Monday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, citing an undisclosed source.
The deal brings together all-starosed forward Garnett with long-time Celtics playmaker Paul Pierce and veteran guard Ray Allen to make Boston a force to contend with in the National Basketball Association after years of struggles.
None of the three have ever been able to claim an NBA championship despite years of success on the court. And with all in their 30s, the chances to pull off a title run might hinge upon all of them coming together as a team.

Hutongs–Beijing’s New Attraction (old-culture,new attraction) 2007-08-05 10:17:40 A new pastime — roaming through Beijing
’s old, narrow streets, hutongs, by old-fashioned pedicab to visit siheyuan, the old quadrangles, and learn about the daily life of ordinary Beijing citizens– has attracted more and more overseas visitors.Existed as early as hundreds of years ago, narrow lanes, or hutongs were common in ancient Beijing. In the past, several thousand lanes, alleys and quadrangles formed residential areas for ordinary people living in the capital. Today,as the city develops into an international metropolis, its lanes and alleyways, occupying one third of the city proper, still serve as dwellings for half the total urban population.
If sightseeing at the Imperial Palace, Ming Tombs and the Summer Palace is helpful in learning about the lives of China’s emperors, the hutongs of Beijing reflect in turn the history of Beijing as a whole.
A day tour through hutongs gives you fresh insight into Beijing’s local life.

Beijing hutong–overview 2007-08-05 10:15:13
A hutong is an ancient city alley or lane typical in Beijing
, where hutongs run into the several thousand. Surrounding the Forbidden City, many were built during the Yuan (1206-1341), Ming(1368-1628) and Qing(1644-1908) dynasties. In the prime of these dynasties the emperors, in order to establish supreme power for themselves, planned the city and arranged the residential areas according to the etiquette systems of the Zhou Dynasty. The center of the city of Beijing was the royal palace — the Forbidden City. One kind of hutongs, usually referred to as the regular hutong, was near the palace to the east and west and arranged in orderly fashion along the streets. Most of the residents of these hutongs were imperial kinsmen and aristocrats. Another kind, the simple and crude hutong, was mostly located far to the north and south of the palace. The residents were merchants and other ordinary people.
The main buildings in the hutong were almost all quadrangles–a building complex

3 Diet Myths Busted 2007-08-07 11:38:02 Here’s the real scoop on 3 circulating diet myths…
1. Bananas are fattening FALSE. One medium banana provides only 105 calories — you’d have to eat at least 6 bananas to equal one New York slice of pizza! Bananas are also a good source of fiber (3 grams), magnesium (32 mg), potassium (422 mg) and B6 (0.4 mg). And since foods low in sodium and rich in potassium and magnesium can help manage normal blood pressure, incorporating bananas into an overall healthy diet may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. What’s more, this nutrient-packed, fat-free fruit is a great source of vitamin B6, which helps boost your immune system and assists in the formation of red blood cells.
Enjoy them plain, sliced into cereal, mixed with nonfat yogurt or cottage cheese, tossed into a fruit salad to add a starchy consistency — or peel and freeze for a yummy low-calorie frozen dessert. Obviously, watch out for banana “chips,” which have added fat and su Read more: Myths
