Family matters: genealogy, ancestry and heritage
2007-10-03 16:57:23
How much do you know about your family? When I trained to be an ESOL teacher, one of the topics we covered was having a sense of home (a tricky thing for migrants to regain in a new country). Family plays an important role in our sense of home and identity - who we are and where we’ve come from - but when we were asked to name just one of our great-grandparents, not one person could do it. This got me thinking about where my family had come from… I knew some of the names, but did I know anything about who those people really were, what mattered to them, what their achievements had been and why they’d come to New Zealand from far-off lands? Not a chance. Yet these people are the reason I’m here today, calling myself a New Zealander and living in this peaceful, prosperous country. Try talking to your family about your heritage and ancestry, so that this knowledge won’t be lost. Plus, it’s fascinating stuff when you get into the stories of people&rsquo

New Zealand Internet Explorer browser statistics
2007-10-18 20:34:31
As a New Zealand Search Directory with almost entirely New Zealand traffic (close to 300,000 user sessions; see Nielsen statistics), NZS.com is in a good position to follow New Zealand Internet browser usage statistics. With the introduction of Internet Explorer 7.0 (commonly known as IE7) in October 2006, the browser statistics on NZS.com have shown a surprisingly gradual change from IE6 to IE7. The graph to the right shows Internet Explorer percentages over the last five months (May 2007 to September 2007), indicating that IE7 is slowly taking over from IE6 but is taking longer than many expected. With the launch of IE7 a full year ago now, as well as the increased functionality (eg. tabbed browsing) which has been introduced in IE7, there were many expectations that it would quickly surpass IE6 in usage. A recent blog post on Microsoft’s official IEBlog shows a change this month in the way IE7 is distributed: Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genu

2007 NZ Music Awards : top awards for Mint Chicks and Hollie Smith
2007-10-18 17:36:42
The stars were out in force at the New Zealand Music Awards last night (heck, Paul Holmes even made an appearance in a stunning white suit!) but the clear winners were Auckland rockers, The Mint Chicks , and soul songstress, Hollie Smith . Minty fresh winners Alternative rock group, The Mint Chicks are the “rocky, poppy” musical vehicle of brothers Kody and Ruban Nielson. They outshone other NZ music stars Brooke Fraser, Hollie Smith, Evermore and Opshop to win the Album of the Year Tui for their well-received second album Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!. The Mint Chicks also won accolades for Best Group and Best Rock Album, as well as a Best Video nod for the album’s title song. Soul songstress wins…finally The velvety tones of Wellington soul singer, Hollie Smith, were enough to bring her the coveted Best Female Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist and Best Aotearoa-Roots Album for her work on debut album Long Player. Smith’s 2007 winnings should more than make up for

Looking for love in the world of online dating
2007-10-16 17:30:55
We’re all looking for the same thing really, aren’t we? The quest for a partner who understands how we see the world and accepts us (ultimately loving us just as we are!) is universal. So, it should come as no surprise that significant numbers of users search for free NZ dating sites on NZS.com every month. The growing popularity of online dating services has been seen both in New Zealand and across the ditch; apparently, over one million Australians visit online dating services each month. Online match-making can be an effective and efficient way to meet (albeit virtually) a large number of available singles. And why not? You may think dating in cyberspace is just for geeks or people without social skills… well, maybe that’s sometimes true, but there are many regular Joe’s ‘n Jane’s online who are testing the waters of romance to see what’s out there. While it’s entirely possible to throw yourself into the online dating pool witho

Lloyd Jones pipped at the post
2007-10-16 17:26:07
An update to our earlier announcement of Lloyd Jones’ placement on the Booker Prize shortlist … Jones’ Mr Pip has missed out on the prize, which was awarded to Irish author Anne Enright for her family epic, The Gathering. While it missed out on the top spot, Mr Pip is still widely touted as the most internationally successful New Zealand book EVER, being published worldwide to critical and popular acclaim. It has also won the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize and the Montana New Zealand Prize for best fiction this year. We don’t seem to be winning much lately, but this is still a great success for Lloyd Jones (and the rest of us who hang on his literary coat-tails). Keri Hulme’s the bone people remains the only New Zealand book to win the prestigious Booker Prize. Share This ...

South Island earthquake: when can we expect the big quake?
2007-10-15 17:21:59
The earth moved for South Island ers in the early hours of this morning. An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale shook Southland. While there were no reports of injury or damage, the quake was felt strongly across the South Island. GNS Science duty seismologist Mark Chadwick said the quake, which struck at 1.29am, was centred 60km from Milford Sound at a depth of 24km. A 4.6 magnitude aftershock followed at 2.50am and a second aftershock was felt at 6:34am. There was no risk of a tsunami, although further aftershocks are likely over the next couple of days. As Carl’s earlier post mentioned, Geonet provides up-to-date information on New Zealand quakes - here they keep us clued up on the most recent earthquakes, including today’s shake-up and aftershocks. They operate a nationwide network of seismic stations that transmit their data to the GeoNet Data Management Centre (DMC) where it’s analysed by automated processes. The information is released to the public if

Some New Zealand sporting success, finally…
2007-10-14 16:34:42
Finally we see some success in New Zealand sport and it comes in an area of sport close to my heart - Motorsport. Jonny Reid claims two back-to-back wins in the second round of the A1 GP series to take the lead in the hotly contested formula. Jonny roared away from South Africa on pole for a commanding six-second win on the 5.4km circuit and then burst from seventh on the grid to win the 70min, 38-lap feature race. He has now propelled the New Zealand team from ninth to first on the championship table with 37 points, one ahead of South Africa, with Great Britain and the Netherlands third equal on 31 points. As well as being a great motorsport success for New Zealand, it is great to see Jonny doing well after competing against him myself in my earlier years in Karting. Finishing a close third, I might add, in the New Zealand champs one year in which Jonny took out the title. Now some of you might be saying, “What is A1 GP?” Well, A1 GP is an entirely new concept in motor rac

We’re all smiles online with emoticons :)
2007-10-22 20:17:21
Cast your mind back 25 years… and you’ll see a world where the Internet was barely imagined, spam was a tinned meat product and the 87 million people who use email every day were, you know, talking to each other. Back in 1982, a small group of geeks were wondering how to inject some emotion into their online communications. To solve their problem, Scott Fahlman, a professor at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, created emoticons. Staring at the keyboard sideways, he smiled to himself. Then he typed his smile :-) Within days, the smiley face was sweeping the ARPAnet (the Internet’s precursor) and other emoticons were being created, allowing geeks to show: Laughter :D Flirtation ;) Teasing :P Frowns :( Confusion : Surprise :O Today… there are countless emoticons that allow us to add some feeling to our emails, instant messages, blog and forum posts, and even to text messages on our mobile phones. As Fahlman says, it’s hard to convey mea

The Virgin Mary makes an appearance… on a pebble
2007-10-24 23:02:14
Hands up who believes in miracles. I know you’re out there. Miracles have an allure, even for some non-believers. We know there’s no way to disprove them. We want the impossible to happen. And there’s something compelling about the idea that a divine entity is manifesting itself in the mundane. Newsworthy? Maybe. Intriguing? Definitely. That the ‘Virgin Mary pebble’ made the news is great - isn’t it brilliant to have some positive news from the doom ‘n gloom merchants? Christchurch woman Lisa-Marie Corlet hit the headlines with her tiny icon-on-a-stone. The Virgin Mary pebble was found at Kaikoura Beach with an image etched on its surface, seemingly of the Virgin Mary. Without any religious scruples, Corlet put the pebble up for sale on TradeMe with a buy now price of $50,000. After a fake bid or two and a second Virgin Mary pebble auction underway, the pebble sits at $26,900 (while you’re there, check out the ‘Pebble that doesn&rs

Free Radiohead album download? OK Computer!
2007-10-23 16:29:12
Free music downloads from a band that’s loved around the world? An exclusive online album release? Sounds too good to be true, but world superstars Radiohead have done just that with their new album, In Rainbows. No longer under the thumb of record giant EMI (their last album, 2003’s Hail to the Thief, was the final in a six-record deal), this experimental group have bucked the trend by shouting a resounding ‘Yes’ to music downloads. Not only can you download the new album from their site, you choose your price, flea-market style. If you want, you can pay only the cost of processing your credit card payment. No one will know how many people have bought the new album or what they paid for it, as Radiohead are not revealing sales numbers or the amount paid for each album. Challenging the system is nothing new for Radiohead; they’ve always been innovators. Although their last three albums - Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief - all reached number one in the

New Zealand population heads for the big 5 million
2007-10-29 18:37:29
Have you ever wondered how many people will live in New Zealand in the future? According to the New Zealand population clock, we’re currently sitting on 4,240,179. I think it’s fair to say that ‘getting away from it all’ is a Kiwi pastime, so it’s hard to imagine our country being overcrowded, without beautiful areas of unspoilt wilderness. I hope we always stay this way - and now statistics seem to be backing me up on this… New Zealand’s population will continue to rise at its current rate until it reaches around five million . Our permanently small population offers some opportunities (tourism, great lifestyle, a beautiful environment) but it also means limitations for our economy and society. The rate of population expansion will drop as the number of deaths overtakes the number of births annually. At present, one person is born about every 14 minutes and 20 seconds. Statistics New Zealand projections show population growth beginning to slo

Movember: changing the face of men’s health
2007-10-31 15:21:01
The month formerly known as November has begun. In many New Zealand homes and workplaces, this month has now been dubbed Movember. So, what’s it all about? At the start of the month, guys register with a clean shaven face. Every ‘Mo Bro’ has the rest of the month to grow and groom their facial hair until they have a magnificent specimen of a moustache. The month ends with gala events, including a chance to grab the title of Man of Movember. Along the way, participants raise as much money and awareness about male health issues as possible. Men are often reluctant to seek help with their health issues, resulting in high rates of death from prostate cancer and other preventable or treatable conditions. Movember is helping to change male attitudes to health and wellbeing. And ladies, don’t worry. ‘Mo Sistas’ can support their men, help to raise funds and party at the end-of-month gala. And, just between you and me, I’ve heard that women grow their

Fancy an excuse to dress up and have a flutter on the horses? New Zealand Cup and Show Week is just that. This annual Christchurch event brings together the best of horse racing, frivolous frocks ‘n hats, fine dining and a few drinks in the sunshine. Throughout Cup Week, Addington and Riccarton Race Courses come alive with racing events and entertainment, including the New Zealand Galloping and Trotting Cups, Ladies Day, Guineas Day and Show Day race meetings. The event is an impressive feature on the New Zealand horse racing calendar, pulling over 125,000 punters to the racetrack for a fling. Highlights of the week’s entertainment prove there’s something for everyone: New Zealand Trotting Cup - As well as betting on horses that are in fine form, well-dressed fillies and lads will be in to win coveted Best Dressed titles. Southern Amp - Rock bands and DJ’s for Christchurch’s hip young things… ready your ears for Opshop, Concord Dawn, The Veils and m

You know you’ve made it when you’re a Wikipedia star
2007-11-07 17:05:25
You’ve definitely made it if you’ve got an entry in Wikipedia . How do you measure success? It’s a difficult thing to pin down, but I’d say you’re a star if you’ve got your own page on the sprawling, constantly evolving online encyclopedia that is Wikipedia. Unlike popular social networking sites, which allow you to post your own profile pages, Wikipedia has kept a firm control over such ego-building tactics. If you want to make it as a famous person on the Wiki, bear in mind that entries can’t include original research, must contain verifiable facts and should be written objectively. Entries can be updated, changed or removed by users. So, if someone thinks you’re worthy, you’ll end up with your own page. In theory. Although you can just as quickly lose it, as Chelsea Kate Isaacs (a once-famous hand model) discovered; an entry on her achievements was added by an ardent chirophiliac, but removed after just a few days. New Zealand horse Efficient wins Melborune Cup
2007-11-06 14:17:16
Well, they might have stolen Phar Lap, but the Aussies will just have to suck it up over New Zealand ’s victory in 2007’s Melbourne Cup. New Zealand trained horse, Efficient, romped home to win the $NZ6.17 million epic race at Flemington yesterday. New Zealand trainer Graeme Rogerson was on top of the world after the win, which followed first placings in the Cox Plate and Golden Slipper races. Efficient was a surprise win - a year ago, he won the Victoria Derby, but had been below form since then. Rider Michael Rodd took Efficient to the win with a late run, which knocked Purple Moon from pole position to second and bringing Irish trained Mahler to third place. Overall New Zealand trained horses didn’t fare so well though, with next best Sculptor finishing ninth, collecting $NZ133,000 for Levin owner-trainer Peter McKenzie. Other Kiwi equines Princess Coup and Railings placed 13th and 19th respectively. Since the race was first run in 1861, New Zealand bred horses hav

Consumers’ Institute survey: We’re not happy with our Broadband Internet
2007-11-05 14:21:00
New Zealand Internet Service Providers are doing all they can to convince us that broadband is better, but when it comes to the crunch, we’re not happy. Fewer than 50% of Xtra customers are satisfied with the service they receive from Telecom, according to a Consumers’ Institute survey of 10,000 Internet users. For the third year in a row, Xtra was placed last in the battle of the Internet providers, with just 42% of customers rating its performance as ‘good’ or ‘very good.’ Satisfaction has dropped from 55% in 2006 and 78% in 2005. Xtra has faced a number of crises over the last year - earlier in the year Xtra’s merger with Yahoo caused massive glitches with email service, and on Sunday, outages meant emergency service staff were forced to use pen and paper… The news wasn’t good for New Zealand ISPs in general either: dissatisfaction is rife amongst Internet customers. As ISP’s promise more, expectations are raised and so to

Anti-terror laws in New Zealand: are they justified?
2007-11-13 15:11:04
We’ve always been proud of our clean human rights record and our ability to stand up for the little guy in any fight. But here’s something that, in the words of ACT MP Rodney Hide, “does away with the fundamental rights of every New Zealand er.” Protests against anti-terror law amendment Today, hundreds of protesters will descend on Parliament to voice their opposition to anti-terrorism legislation passed yesterday. The hikoi has made its way from Ruatoki, in the Bay of Plenty, the site of police raids on so-called ‘terror suspects’ (those arrested have since faced firearms charges, but all terror charges have since been dropped). While keeping the issue of civil liberty alive, the protesters are too late to halt the passing of the Suppression of Terrorism Act amendment. The legislation passed its third reading yesterday, 108 votes to 13, with the backing of Labour and National. The Greens, ACT and the Maori Party all opposed the legislation. Does th

New Zealand employment stats: plenty o’ jobs in NZ
2007-11-12 14:46:34
I like being the bearer of good news, so it’s with pleasure I announce that unemployment is at an all-time low in New Zealand . It’s great news for the New Zealand economy that there’s an abundance of jobs in New Zealand. The overall rate of unemployment now sits at 3.5%, the lowest since records began 22 years ago. And this isn’t just a moment of job-fullness: unemployment levels have been below 4% for the last three years running. But the good news isn’t as simple as that - the number of New Zealanders in employment also fell, due to a dropping rate of participation in the workforce. Um, what? Well, the number of people of working age who aren’t actively seeking work or currently employed rose by 18,000. The participation rate rises and falls with demand for labour; the recent drop follows two quarters of strong growth in employment (25,000 in March and 13,000 in June). So, is the NZ job glass half-full? Yes! Overall, the number of people employed h

Silver Ferns miss out on Netball World Championship title
2007-11-18 15:09:04
Yet another sporting loss for Kiwis, and a so-close-yet-so-far moment for the Silver Ferns and New Zealand netball fans. I know it’s only a game, but it’s a game that’s tied up with our national pride! The Silver Ferns put up an excellent fight in the 2007 Netball World Championships final against a strong Australian team, eventually losing 42-38 in a gripping finale. The two teams (rivals going way back) were evenly matched, but Australia played an uncompromising game to beat the well-prepared Ferns. In a match that was marked by a lack of free-flowing play, the Ferns battled hard and kept the eyes of the 7,000-strong crowd glued to the court. The Kiwis began the match with a fast paced, assertive attack, taking the early initiative against their long-standing rivals. Silver Ferns shooter Irene van Dyk fought for dominance against Australian shooter Liz Ellis, but the team failed to keep their stronger Australian counterparts at bay for long. In the third quarter a N

We’re the best at txt : New Zealand grabs world record for fastest txter
2007-11-19 14:08:02
How fast are your thumbs? Not to harp back to the good old days, but it wasn’t so long ago that kids used thumbs mainly for grabbing things they weren’t allowed to touch, pinching other kids and picking up food with their hands at the dinner table. Kids today are increasingly dexterous with their digits - hours spent playing games on Playstations and Xboxes, feeding tamagochis and texting on mobile phones has brought new thumb strength to the younger generation. Now a Dunedin teen has proved he’s the best at txt in the world. I’ve already proclaimed my love for the Guinness Book of Records, so I’m over the moon that we’ve made it with this latest record. Or should I say ovr th mn? Seventeen-year-old Elliot Nicholls broke the world record in Dunedin, texting a 160-character message blindfolded and finishing in just 51 seconds on his second attempt and 45 seconds on his fourth try. Both times were slick enough to beat the standing record, set by an Ita

Online advertising shows continued growth
2007-11-29 21:04:38
I read with interest that New Zealand online advertising has grown by 23% in 3 months. Businesses and individuals had spent the best part of $41 million in Q3! That takes the total year to date spending to $98.6 million. Estimates are that the yearly figure will exceed $120 million. When you think about it, though, it’s not a great surprise. With so many more websites out there it is getting harder to stand out in traditional search engines and online directories. One report by IBM Global Business Services says that 30% of ad revenue now spent on traditional media will shift to online ad exchanges such as Yahoo and Google. In the US, online ad spend on newspaper websites grew 21% in Q3, or US$773 million. The digital revolution is far from disappearing. Growth in New Zealand is expected to continue for some time yet, considering overseas Online Advertising figures are still in double digit growth. There are many ways to spend your money in online advertising - search directorie

Big Day Out 2008 brings big band lineup to Auckland
2007-11-26 19:43:04
Once we’re over Christmas, another exciting event is on the horizon: the Big Day Out 2008. Or should I say THE BIG DAY OUT. That’s how big it’ll be. I, along with hundreds of others, am looking forward to it. Butterflies in the stomach kinda thrilled about it, actually. Don’t tell anyone, but this is my first time. With a stellar Big Day Out lineup announced, this year’s event is sure to be a winner. Alternative songstress Bjork is my top pick, but Liam Finn (the bearded boy wonder), Phoenix Foundation (ah, the songs of Kiwi summers) and indie-stars Arcade Fire are also high on my list of must-sees. Playing at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland , on January 18th, will be: Local bands and musicians: The Phoenix Foundation, Shihad, Katchafire, The Clean, Liam Finn, SJD, Motocade, Cut Off Your Hands, White Birds and Lemons, Op Shop, Pluto, Scribe, Die! Die! Die!, Tiki Tanne, Havoc, Collapsing Cities, Bleeders, Supergroove, The Checks, Young Sid, Antagonist, Dam Nati
