Ridiculous…
2007-07-29 13:26:18
You want to know what I think the real problem is with most atheists? Apathy. Some of you are so complacent in your lives and have absolutely no desire to stand up for what you believe (or do not believe) in. (more…)

Interview with Warren the Pastor
2007-07-25 18:12:47
About a month ago I posted a request for interview questions to ask a local priest. I got the questions, but the priest said no. So I did some searching and I dug up a very helpful Baptist Pastor named Warren . He was a good guy, and was very polite, he answered all my questions candidly and never tried to turn it into a sermon or tell me the error of my ways. He didn’t even hang up on me! (That happened earlier with a different pastor) So without further a due: Me: Hello Pastor, thank you so much for taking the time to speak to me. W: My pleasure. I have no problem talking to atheists, I think Jesus would want me to talk to you. (more…)

Plausible Deniability
2007-07-19 22:43:25
It’s one of the classic scenes from Hollywood: the black-ops commandos are sent out on a secret mission.  If they are discovered, then the government cannot acknowledge them, and will deny any connection with them.  Even the President doesn’t know about the mission, so that if he is asked about it, then he will be able to plausibly deny it. It’s not just a Mission: Impossible scenario, though.  This happens every day - for every seemingly rational, seemingly normal Christian believer, there is a wacko somewhere claiming to be Jesus, claiming to know god’s plan, claiming that god told him to kill his children, and so on.  And the Christian community at large has plausible deniability, so they will never take credit for the wackos.  Instead, we hear the popular refrain: “Don’t lump us all together.” (more…)

Carl Sagan and His Dragon

“A fire-breathing dragon lives in my garage” Suppose (I’m following a group therapy approach by the psychologist Richard Franklin) I seriously make such an assertion to you. Surely you’d want to check it out, see for yourself. There have been innumerable stories of dragons over the centuries, but no real evidence. What an opportunity! (more…)

Why I no longer practice…
2007-07-15 11:33:11
My name is Melanie and I am known on here as Recovering Catholic. I know that some people reading this site will understand what it is that I will try to say in this post. Please bear with me as I find it hard to explain what it is that has gotten me to this point. I would first like to point out that I am still in constant conflict within myself, as you will see from my previous posts. I was raised in a Roman Catholic family and even went to a Catholic elementary school. I was taught by nuns wearing those silly black and white habits, and I was taught about the church. I never questioned it. When I was a little older I became involved in my church. I was in the choir, spent my school holidays at retreats (which I begged to go to) and even read at Mass. It was, however, at that point, that I found myself questioning some of the teachings that the Church had. I had a struggle inside of me because I didn’t agree with them, and when it came time for me to be confirmed I wa

Beyond Mere Words

Yes, Christian fundamentalism is dying, and with good cause. But before you attack this statement, let’s define just exactly what it is that we are talking about. If you believe that the Bible is the literal “Word of God,” you are a part of the fundamental movement. Unfortunately for you, this view of the Bible cannot be maintained for much longer as more and more of the Bible’s history is discovered and the sciences reveal more about the world around us. Add to that the fact that more biblical scholars admit this today more than ever before, and you have the beginnings of an inevitable collapse of the Christian Fundamental movement. Atheist’s Murderer Sentenced
2007-08-01 21:44:15
http://vassleer.newsvine.com/_news/2007/01/03/504714-murdered-for-being-an-atheist Some of you may have read this article already. (I know there are quite a few stumblers here) I have no words. I honestly have NO words. I have been trying for about 15 minutes to come up with an intelligent sentence and I just cannot do it! The guy, this 50 year-old Eagle scout who says “oh don’t worry about me I’m fine, but he’s the devil” and then complains when the judge gives him 25-45 saying that its basically a death sentence, he is exactly what is destroying this country. Men and women like him are bane, a plague if you want to get biblical, on our country, on our very planet. (more…)

Needless to say, we will be transfering at the end of the month. Our new home will be at IMHosted. Looking forward to the move, as our traffic has increased from 300 per month in the beginning to over 25,000 on TJM alone. (Unique visitors, page views are MUCH higher.) Atheist and Christian Spouses
2007-08-04 23:49:20
Can it ever be? This post is not so informative as it is a simple question. It is a question that has dogged me for some time. The two philosophies, on opposing sides, can they allow love between them? I’ve heard stories of success, of an atheist and a Christian able to set aside their differences and love each other. They’ve been able to raise their children successfully. How do they do it? I’ve also heard of how difficult it is, to do this. Be it from the Christian being told to hate the atheist, and their families and companions shunning the atheist. Or from the atheist being incapable of tolerating the folly of the Christian, or something of that nature. Or perhaps it is little details of religion that separate them. Such as death/the afterlife, issues like abortion, even some details of politics. What can be done?

Christians dont understand Atheist Quotes
2007-08-04 16:53:14
I had a discussion with a Christian yesterday and our conversation moved on to a topic that ended in me trying to explain a quote that I really love. She had many questions about Atheism but she was more curious about an Atheist Quote that I randomly used. I contend that we are both atheists. I just go one god further than you. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. -Stephen Robert I gave her only the first half of this quote since I wasn’t trying to disprove her God. I was expecting her show signs of discomfort for calling her an Atheist but to my surprise, Her immediate response to it was that she does not understand what it means to say “I just go one god further than you“. That was when it hit me. I see Atheist quotes & phrases on bumper stickers, T-shits and graffiti all the time and always thought that It was also read and understood by the Theists who walk the same path. But it never

The Theory of God: Obsolete

The God Who Wasn’t There (Review)
2007-08-03 21:27:15
Sure, it’s been out  for a while, but I just watched it last night. I find that I have to look at this objectively, which is a bit hard tot do. After all, after studying this stuff for over 16 years, you amass quite a collection of books, videos and other forms of information. As you can imagine, it is quite hard to find something that is “new” to what you have already seen. Unfortunately, I was expecting more than what this 50 minute film brought to the table. (Personally, I blame the pre-release hype for my expectations.) (more…)

Is atheism a religion?
2007-08-10 13:48:26
Is atheism a religion? It’s a question that has been bounced back and forth ever since modern atheism started gaining momentum in the mid-twentieth century. Most atheists agree that in no way can atheism be called a religion. Theists often prefer to call atheism a religion, perhaps because they fallaciously think that we would then be as susceptible to attack as they are. But are we really content to be “Other” in every religious context, or is there something to our belief? (more…)

Scientology
2007-08-09 22:41:26
Scientology makes some grandiose claims: “Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The Scientology religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. ” - from the official Scientology website. Sounds great, doesn’t it? They go on to claim that you don’t have to accept ANYTHING on faith, it will ALL be conclusively proven to you. What they neglect to tell you is that you are not capable of understanding those “fundamental truths” until you have gone through extensive brainwashing training, spent a small fortune on “auditing” and alienated any of your family members who challenge the cult of Scientology. This article should serve as a jumping-off point for the outsider to take a real look at Scientology. Before you get started, I recommend you check out this video (Not for the faint hearted - there are posthumous photos of some of Scientology’
