Vaillancourt Fountain on the Embarcadero
2007-07-26 07:47:32
Photo credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinhole/ Click here to see many more photos and maybe some video of the Vaillancourt Fountain on goodfountain.com The Armand Vaillancourt Fountain in the Justin Herman Plaza across from the Ferry Building at the base of Market Street in San Francisco. A stylistic reminder of the elevated freeway that used to shadow the area before the ‘89 quake. Bono spray-painted graffiti on the structure during a U2 concert. After then-Mayor Feinstein protested, Bono claimed he had permission from the famous Vaillancourt, who designed this fountain. The artist had indeed approved the act, but the paint was eventually scrubbed. This fountain pumps some 30,000 gallons of water per minute. It looks a little, well, industrial, but there are walkways where you can walk under, through and above the fountain. From the photographer: Vaillancourt Fountain, by Armand Vaillancourt. Built in 1971. This wonderful sculpture sits between the Ferry Building and the

A fountain for every wall?
2007-07-19 17:30:05
Classic Falls Triple wall fountain: $6,000 price tag. Indoor fountains and waterfalls haven’t appealed to me much to this point. The little tabletop fountains I have seen just seem to lack any unique appeal whatsoever. Large wall fountains, on the other hand, pique my interest. I just read that “ Study Concludes Indoor Water Fountain Cleans Air Better Than Most Air Cleaners.” This is about a study by a fountain manufacturing company (surprise, surprise) but it doesn’t seem far-fetched to me. The company is called Accents in Water. Here’s a cool water wall fountain, made of stainless steel and glass. I’d love to hear how this sounds — I’ll see if I can find one in person or find a video / sound byte on the internet. To purchase one of these, budget about $200 per square foot.

Ontario Science Centre Hydraulophone
2007-07-17 08:56:03
I’ve designed several fountains that are supposed to make their own music. In principle, they are similar to a player piano or a wind-up music box. They use the water’s behavior and natural sounds (splashes, trickles, flowing past fins, etc.) to make specific “notes.” One of these days, I’ll actually construct some of these. In the meantime, there is the interactive musical fountain at the Ontario Science Center. (I’m not Canadian, so I fixed the “re” on the end there for ya.) This is one I really must go see some day soon. I absolutely love that this piece is designed for people to get in, on, around, and to play with. Click here for more photos and videos of the Ontario Science Centre Hydraulophone on goodfountain.com The information below is from: http://wearcam.org/osc/opening/ Ontario Science Centre Hydraulophone (a self-cleaning highly expressive musical keyboard fountain) The FUNtain (TM) is a self-cleaning acoustic keyboard inst

Gateway Geyser - World’s Tallest Fountain
2007-07-16 11:12:06
Yee haw. Let’s shoot some water straight up in the air as far as it will go. Good times. Forgive me if I don’t get excited. I suppose these types of fountains are pretty cool, as in “something you don’t see every day.” A bit crude for my taste, though. Personally, I enjoy more subtle displays — or at least more varied and imaginative. I wasn’t able to find too many photos of this fountain on the web — probably due to it only running for 15 minutes here and there. Since it’s near my wife’s home town, I’ll have to go shoot some lame video and photos of it some day soon. Developed by Hydro Dramatics. From the Hydro Dramatics site: Gateway Geyser Renowned as Tallest Fountain in U.S. and Spectacular Complement to the Arch — How Hydro Dramatics Helped Civic Booster Realize His Dream Of Creating a Marvel on the East St. Louis Waterfront The story of the Gateway Geyser - which rises to nearly 630 feet as befits a fountain locate

Fountains at Bellagio
2007-07-15 13:36:10
Exciting? Spectacular? I guess, if that’s what floats your boat. I’ve never seen the Fountains at Bellagio in person, and it isn’t high on my list. While it is a remarkable piece of engineering, it doesn’t seem to be much more than a glorified laser light show, only done with water. Sure, water is fascinating, but the WOO and SHEBANG behind these fountains seem to be more about “look how precise we can control these jets of water.” I think it takes more creativity to design a compelling piece that relies on the natural properties and behaviors of water. But what do I know? Maybe I should take the mystery out of Bellagio fountains and show you what it’s really all about. Have a look below. Click here to see more photos and videos of the Bellagio Fountains on goodfountain.com I initially didn’t realize the folks at WET designed this fountain. I’m not surprised, though. While Bellagio is famous and “neat,” I think you&rsq

Great place for a water fountain
2007-07-28 13:54:10
Water fountains help soften the sights and sounds of an otherwise square-cornered, hard-lined urban area. Walking around downtown Champaign, Illinois today on lunch break, I realized there are certain areas that almost never have water fountains, but could really benefit from them. My first observation: Bank drive-through teller lanes are a great place for water fountains. Argh! How ugly can you get? Small vertical fountains on the leading edge pillars could really make a difference here. Maybe some climbing ivy around the fountains as well? Instead of using brick on the pillars, there is this fake rock siding stuff, nubrick or something, that could give it a more organic look and yet last a long time. Wow! This drive through could have all sorts of water features! In the above photo, Spots “A” and “D” could have tall vertical fountains, perhaps something trickling down, or perhaps spiraling. Yes! Spiraling! Spots “B” and “C” could be

Water is fun
2007-08-10 09:58:55
Credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisawilliams/ There’s nothing quite like water to attract a kid. It could be a puddle, a pool, a stream in the woods — any number of water features. If it looks like there’s water that you can touch and play with, it is a kid magnet! Here, this kid plays with the stream of water from a drinking fountain while his friend holds the button down. This type of play is fun, but it also teaches us how water behaves. Admit it, even you, the “oh-so-grown-up” person you are, could sit and play with this water fountain for an untold amount of time. That is, if you hadn’t been chastised for doing it as a child. What’s the matter? What are you waiting for? You’re a grown-up. No one can stop you. Go turn on the faucet, the hose, whatever… get out some cups, some straws, some funnels… spend some time playing with water. You’ll feel better for it.

Mysterious Centre Island Fountain de Liz
2007-08-23 11:24:02
I found this fountain photo in a recent blog post by Liz. I don’t know where the fountain is, or who is in front of it. For all I know, it could be Liz! Recently I asked Liz in an email if she had any groovy water fountain photos, as she is a handy photographer and surely has seen many water fountains in her travels. This fountain was included in a post about moving on, a poignant post about loss. I don’t know if the photo was included in the post specifically for me or not. One way or the other, thanks for the photo, Liz, and good luck in New York.

Virga: Rain that refuses to fall
2007-09-24 13:31:05
My sister lives in Idaho. Stop with the potato jokes, already! We were talking about the weather, and she mentioned “verga,” which I had never heard of, or neglected to remember learning about in climatology. Webster Dictionary online doesn’t know what verga is, so I don’t feel too bad. Look it up on Flickr and you’ll see a bunch of photos of some model dude in his underwear. Damned Italians. Oops. My apologies to Websters and Italians. Especially to Italians who rely on Webster’s. I misspelled it. It is “virga.” Webster’s says: wisps of precipitation evaporating before reaching the ground Wikipedia does one better: In meteorology, virga is precipitation that falls from a cloud but evaporates before reaching the ground. At high altitudes the precipitation falls mainly as ice crystals before melting and finally evaporating; this is usually due to compressional heating, because the air pressure increases closer to the ground. It is ve

Every now and then, someone contributes some photos for the site. Super Mel sent me this photo of Helios Fountain from her alma mater, Anderson University, in Anderson, Indiana. Fountain Hills, Arizona

Fountain Hills , Arizona is apparently the disputed home of the tallest fountain in the world. Rain Chains
2008-01-12 06:03:20
Here’s a pretty cool idea. You hang these “rain chains” (’kusari doi’ in Japanese) from your house guttering system where you would usually have a boring downspout. With our awesome Midwest thunderstorms, I’d be concerned about what happens when the wind gets to whipping around. Gutters are very important for getting water away from your house [...]

Rain barrels - Schmain barrels

Check out this great post at Inhabit.com, “RAINPOD’s Beautiful Water Harvesting System.” Here’s a borrowed photo and quote. Go read the full post now.
