6 Reasons McClellanville Won’t Change
2007-07-18 09:43:35
One of the hardest things to explain to people about McClellanville is that we are not going to be “discovered” one day and change over night. I can’t blame their cynicism, because we’ve all known a sleepy little town that we loved to visit or pass through and then one day the town has become a city and it’s lost all it’s charm. The people that came to enjoy the “quaintness” ruined it in the process, because they didn’t see what harm a few Starbucks and a Super Wal-mart could do. First of all, to claim that we are undiscovered is simply a myth. McClellanville is frequently featured in local and national magazines and Hurricane Hugo certainly put us in the nation’s spotlight. McClellanville doesn’t want to be famous though. The people here are warm and friendly, but that doesn’t mean they are welcome to change. I certainly don’t blame the people that visit here and tell everyone they know how wonderful McClellanville is. This article is to enlighten all

What to do with McClellanville’s share of the Greenbelt Funds
2007-07-17 08:46:15
Last night was the planning commission meeting at town hall to discuss possible ways to spend the towns share of the proceeds resulting Charleston County Greenbelt Program. This is the money raised by the 1/2 cent sales tax increase that has to go to preserving greenspace within Charleston County. McClellanville has been told that we will get a share of this fund, but not how much that share will be. I went and was a little surprised that I was the only one that came out to present my ideas, but I think several people have already presented their ideas at other meetings. My idea (see map above) was to turn the area in the fork in the road between Old Cemetery Road and S. Pinckney Street into a natural park while also creating some sort of boardwalk / bridge across some of the marsh grass at this little finger of Jeremy Creek near the small bridge. The park would add beauty to the main entrance into town and could have a nice “welcome” sign. The boardwalk would serve as a grea

A Paddle Down Otter Creek and Memory Lane
2007-07-02 13:40:00
In McClellanville just across Jeremy Creek from the town boat landing is a small tidal creek named Otter Creek.  On a recent kayak trip, I didn’t encounter any otter, but I did see nature at its best while paddling through this area now known as Mouzon’s Bluff. I start my trek as I entered Otter Creek, only 10 feet wide at its mouth.  Snails work their way up blades of marsh grass slowly cleaning them as they slide.  Small minnows and shrimp jump and splash as I quietly wisp through the water.  In the marsh grass near the shore, I catch a glimpse of a tail, of what I am sure is a good sized spot-tail bass, swoosh off into the cloudy depth below.  I continue my journey as the creek widens to about 30 to 40 feet  and bends to the right and then the left. I curiously wonder if I might encounter an alligator, which prefer brackish water but will travel in the creeks on rare occasions. Bounded by marsh grass on both sides; palm

It Takes a Village
2007-06-28 10:51:38
You’ve all heard the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”, but do you actually buy into that theory?  Well this sounds-to-good-to-be-true way of living actually exist in McClellanville. Growing up in a small town like McClellanville (under 500 people) and then working as a police officer in Rock Hill (a suburb of Charlotte, NC with a population of +65,000) has given me an interesting perspective on law enforcement. When I returned to McClellanville, I was sort of elected without contest to be the new deputy town marshal. The town marshal’s authority is limited to the enforcement of town ordinances and my duties include things such as illegal parking, barking dogs, and helping neighbors work out a problem. The thing that astonishes me though is how, excluding these few interactions that I have with the public, and the little bit of patrolling that the Charleston County Sheriff’s Deputy’s do, McClellanville exists on a nearly utopia

McClellanville’s Moving Markers
2007-06-15 14:04:23
Well just a few days after I posted “DOT Changes History”, the issue of the signs was resolved. The historical plaque marking Archibald Rutledge’s birthplace was returned to it’s rightful location in front of “Little Hampton”. They also moved the often ignored McClellanville historical marker (shown below) from the corner of Highway 17 and North Pinckney Street to in front of Deerhead Oak, where many more people will be able to actually stop and read it. Who knows what will happen when we get a historical marker for Deerhead Oak, I guess the DOT will play musical historical markers again. “McClellanville began in the late 1850s ad early 1860s when local plantation owners A.J. McClellan and R.T. Morrison sold lots in the vicinity of Jeremy Creek to planters of the Santee Delta who sought relief from summer fevers. The first store opened soon after the Civil War and the village became the social and economic center for wide area that produced timber, rice, cotton, naval st

DOT Changes History
2007-06-12 08:14:24
If you’ve driven through town recently you may have noticed a new historical marker at the Deerhead Oak.  Upon closer inspection you will have found that it is marking the birthplace of Archibald Rutledge.  Well, not exactly.  No, Archibald Rutledge, South Carolina’s first poet laureate, was not born in the long branches of one of McClellanville’s oldest live oaks (estimated at over 1,000 years old).  The Department of Transportation moved this sign from Archibald Rutledge’s true birthplace known as “Little Hampton” where the family’s vacation home from Hampton Plantation.  The original “Little Hampton”, on the corner of Pinckney Street and Rutledge Court, was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo, but a new home was rebuilt in it’s place.       The plaque was placed there in 2000 to commemorate this significant location and then the DOT decided that the sign was too cl

Rural Real Estate Blogging Article

I wanted to share my most recent article, “Real Estate Blogging Tips From A Rural Real Estate Blogger” with everyone, you won’t find it on MyMcClellanville.net because it wasn’t necessarily local wisdom and applied to the bigger picture of real estate and blogging.  Here is a link to the article on my friend Jim Cronin’s website, The Real Estate Tomato. Jim is one of the top people in his field and thousands of real estate professionals, webdesigners, and bloggers look to him for guidance, so having an article published on his site was a great accomplishment to me.  Well, now that that is over, I can get back to writing some McClellanville articles. New Book: Salt Water in My Blood
2007-07-29 09:35:51
Last night was the book signing for Salt Water in My Blood : The Life Story of Legendary Seaman Cap’n Sonny Morrison at the town hall.  The event was hosted by The Village Museum and Bud Hill gave the introductory speech to standing-room-only crowd.  Sonny’s wife, Jackie Morrison then spoke about her challenges trying to get Sonny to tell his life story.  Finally, the man of the hour, Captain Sonny Morrison rose from his seat to recount a few of his favorite stories of growing up in McClellanville. Sonny is a life-long resident of McClellanville and has spent that entire life on the water.  The book tells many of his stories and adventures ranging from growing up on Jeremy Creek, serving his country in the Navy in World War II,  and his very successful shrimping career.   The book is available at The Village Museum where all proceeds have been graciously donated.  Please stop by, tour the museum, and pick up a copy of this great example of life in McClellanville. The Crab Pot: New Management, New Menu, Name Name
2007-08-28 15:53:35
The Crab Pot has been a long standing McClellanville staple and a lure of highway travelers hoping for a taste of local seafood. New local managers, Erin and Buster Browne are shaking things up in the kitchen and bringing their fresh new ideas and recipes to the place. Locals remember Buster as the former owner of T.W. Graham (I still slip up and call it Buster’s on occasions). His daughter, Erin, is a graduate of Johnson & Wales Culinary School and has been shaping her talents traveling abroad and working at Pinckney Street Kitchen. The pair say that the food is traditional southern style cooking with a Caribbean flare. They’re also quick to point out that there’s something on for everyone on the menu, but they’re happy to take special orders also. They will feature weekly specials using the latest local catches. The menu, based on “whatever is coming off the boat”, includes fresh local shrimp, fish, and oysters (when in season). Buster added, “Our philosophy

McClellanville Creek Sweep Enjoys Good Weather
2007-09-16 14:36:44
The rain held out for paddling participants in the 2007 McClellanville Creek Sweep this Saturday. McClellanville locals Sherry Browne and Cheves Leland organized the event which was part of South Carolina’s 19th Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep, the state’s largest volunteer cleanup event of its kind. Around two dozen volunteers hopped in kayaks and paddled through the marshes of Jeremy Creek in search of debris. There were drinks, coupons, door prizes and all the garbage bags you could fill. Kathy Livingston of Nature Adventure Outfitters, which does local kayaking tours, even donated kayaks for people that were without. My wife and I participated and focused our attention on the southern side of Jeremy creek, filling our canoe with trash in no time. I wish I had taken more pictures of the mornings adventures, but it was hard enough balancing in the canoe and picking up trash without having to worry about dropping my digital camera in the water. In all about 40 bags of trash

McClellanville Neighborhood Spotlight: Mouzon’s Bluff
2007-10-13 12:58:10
Welcome to Mouzon’s Bluff, A waterfront community on Skipper’s Point in McClellanville. Before I continue I feel it necessary to disclose that I am related to several property owners that have an interest in Mouzon’s Bluff. I also think it is necessary to share that I live here and think it is going to be a great community as more houses are built. While no other homes have been built, the initial phase of wooded lots sold quickly. This new community maintains the casual way of life of McClellanville and preserves the natural beauty of the land. Large wooded lots are the perfect place to tuck your house in among the indigenous palmettos, oaks, and pines. Otter Creek winds through the development and offers homeowners a place to catch a glimpse of wildlife at the waters’ edge or launch a kayak and explore their surroundings. All lots will share access to a future community dock on the Intracoastal Waterway as well as green spaces and a natural park on Otter Creek. The w

4 Historic District Properties You Have to See
2007-10-26 13:46:17
The US Forestry Service is moving its local Francis Marion headquarters from McClellanville to Huger.  As a result they no longer need the several government owned properties used to house rangers and are selling them.  These properties can’t be found using a regular MLS search, because they are not listed by a real estate agent and are instead being sold through an online auction by General Services Administration.  Buying property via auction is different than typical real estate transaction, however the best way to look out for your best interest and make sure you are getting your money’s worth is to have a qualified buyer’s agent, such as myself, representing you in the transaction.  If you are interested in seeing any of the following properties, I will be happy to arrange a showing and represent your interests throughout the transaction.  735 Morrison Street  Tidal Waterfront 1

You Know That Thing Everyone Is Trying to Imitate? We’re It!
2007-11-02 10:20:06
Travel magazine Conde Nast recently published it’s 20th Annual Reader’s Survey results in which Charleston, our neighbor to the south, ranked 3rd best US city.  I’m sure “The Holy City” holds many other trophies in her case.  It is a beautiful city, but it’s also expensive, crowded, and has a high crime rate.  I think buyers looking for the quaint southern experience they hear that Charleston offers, end up buying into the lies of many developers and find themselves living in an area that wasn’t what they had envisioned, because they are led to believe that that place doesn’t exist.  South Carolina is a great place to live! Like our slogan “Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places”, says we have a warm tropical climate, friendly people, and also a lower cost of living.  Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and Summerville are expanding at an alarming rate though.  Developers are all racing for new home buyers dollars, but nobody is thinking about infrastr

McClellanville Hires New Deputy Town Marshal and I Get to Retire
2007-12-09 11:28:15
Some of you may be aware that I was the Deputy Town Marshal for McClellanville. I was deputized shortly after moving back here after being a police officer in Rock Hill for 4 years, because I was the most experiences person for the job. After over a year of faithful service I decided that I didn't have the time to devote to the job that it required and asked the Town to find a replacement. This week I handed over this position to Barron Duke, who many of you may already know as the man who picks up the trash. Larry McClellan remains McClellanville's Town Marshal, the Deputy position falls under him and performs the duty of enforcing the parking around town and launching (with a launch permit) at the boating landing. There is also the occasional wild animal call or barking dog problem. Compared to my previous law enforcement duties the job was pretty simple. What is a Town Marshal? This is not the same as the U.S. Marshal (like the Tommy Lee Jones movie) that are in charge of e

McClellanville Christmas Wreaths
2007-12-24 10:23:16
Looking for a great last minute Christmas gift idea or a way to add a splash of beauty to your own front door? How about an all natural, homemade wreath? Take a walk around your yard or the Francis Marion National Forest and collect anything that you think is pretty (I'd leave the poison ivy behind though). Search the ground for nuts and cones or use fresh green branches of pine magnolia, or holly with red berries for color. I made this all natural wreath (yes, I'm a man of many talents) from various sized pine cones, pecan, gum balls, acorns, and magnolia seed pods. I started with a pre-made straw wreath and used a hot glue gun to attach the items. You can spray the whole thing with a clear acrylic spray for added protection and to prevent the pine cones from closing up on you. My wife made this wreath that features pine cones painted silver as well as Christmas ornaments and ribbon for a more modern and festive look. She started with a small vine wreath that I spray painte
