Those Kooky Lebanese! 2007-07-23 22:00:00
I will admit it…ever since eating at Eros, I have been craving Greek/ Mediterranean/ Lebanese
food something fierce. And since I obviously can’t afford to eat at Eros every day, I’ve been forced to find to suitable alternative. This week we decided to try to Al Amir, a restaurant not even two blocks away from our house that boasted large, appetizer styled menus. It's nothing fancy, just some tables, a bar, big windows that look down on the busy street below, and some strobe lights that made up the dance floor. And apparently, the Lebanese dig their dancing.

Pairing Food with Potter 2007-07-22 04:19:17
Wash the clothes. Vacuum the floor. Take out the trash. There are events that happen to us all the time that aren’t really worth remembering. Then there are those rare, special occasions, the ones that take you out of the ordinary and lift the moment to a higher level, making this moment just a bit more kick ass than the others. The day you get married. The day you graduate college. And of course, the release of Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows.
Yup. I just compared the amazing time I had getting married to a children’s novel which I still read and WILLINGLY ADMIT TO. And that, folks, is just how I roll.

I was reading a local food writer in a free alternative paper here in Adelaide, and she had enthusiastically promoted a Lebanese restaurant called Quiet Waters in Adelaide, over on Hindley Street in the City Business District. I’ll be honest…the review itself seemed…well, over the top. Only so many kinds of food can “take your breath away” or “leave you breathless”, and yet it seemed to happen to this reviewer every dish. But I wanted to give the reviewer the benefit of the doubt, and I love Lebanese food, so we went to try it out.

The Tiramisu Test 2007-07-16 22:00:00
Thanks to a fairly recent post at the Amateur Gourmet and my recent wattle seed experience, I had a hankering for some coffee flavored desserts. If you know me well, you know I will not stop the hankering until I’ve made and eaten what I crave at LEAST two or three times in a row. Chunky is a state of mind and I happily subscribe to it.
I was convinced the wattle seed I bought recently would taste great made up in a tiramisu, but the only way to test my theory would be to compare it to a regular tiramisu. Of course. More cake is always the solution.

Field Trip! Or why food + wine = the best school EVER. 2007-07-15 08:34:01
The class I am in now is an elective called Gastronomic Tourism, which focuses on… gastronomic tourism. Yup. I’m getting my Masters degree so I can tell you things like THAT. Feel free to bow in awe now.
Part of the class involves going on field trips that involve tourism, food and/or wine in some way. Score.

Mac n Cheese Man 2007-07-10 21:00:00
It must be the cold weather down here, but I have been EXTRA lazy recently. To be fair, I work, go to school AND cook for my partner and I, so occasional laziness is expected and most often welcomed.
I had already decided to make a nice bowl of cereal my dinner when my partner came home and insisted on making his favorite meal, macaroni and cheese, from scratch. FROM SCRATCH! This from the man who could live on pb & j and ramen noodles. He wanted to teach himself to cook something and I would get to eat it. I’m starting to think I married up.

Eros 2007-07-08 20:00:13
Throwing a wedding and moving to another country within four months can certainly do a number on your bank account, but occasionally, I will treat myself to a nice meal. This was one of those times.
I live in the heart of city of Adelaide, right next to a large outdoor mall and the East End area of restaurants. Most of the surrounding restaurants are a bit pricy, but we finally got a chance to eat at one of them, Eros Ouzeri.

Salopian Inn Dessert 2007-07-25 22:00:00
A short while back, I visited a restaurant called the Salopian Inn. In summary, I came, I ate, I conquered. But I couldn’t stop thinking about the dessert we had: Gewürztraminer poached beurre bosc pear with a dark chocolate sauce, “toffee” caramel crisp, and a scoop of pistachio gelato. It floats in and out of my day dreams, pops up before bed, and once, I swear I saw it following me at the mall. I couldn’t go back to the restaurant anytime soon, but I needed this dessert. And frankly, I think it needed me too.

Apothecary 1878 2007-07-29 22:00:00
The partner and I got surprised with a random FREE trip to a local restaurant, the Apothecary
1878. It's a wine and tapas bar/restaraunt on Hindley in Adelaide, and we've been wanting to try it for a while. Never one to turn down a good free meal, we went.
Not a lot to say. The food was pretty good, but for the price, didn't really blow me away. I forgot to get a picture of the antipasto plate we started with, but I have a feeling their tapas are especially good.

My, I’ve been a bad blogger lately…this story is all the way from the beginning of July. But fear not--it is still entertaining and delicious. I’d bet my lemon pound cake on it.

I have gone sorbet crazy. Yes, it is winter here. Yeah, I’m cold a lot. But yes, damn it, I want some sorbet. That’s just how we culinary rebels roll.

Leena Eats This Blog Makeover 2007-08-18 10:29:13 If you haven't figured it out by now, my blog done got a makeover. Think of my blog as the dorky girl next door with a great personality who 45 minutes into the movie gets a massive makeover so her true spirit is as beautiful outside as it is inside of her. She gets hot boys and party invitations and really cool theme music whenever she enters a room. My little blog is growing up.

you know you want my crisp 2007-08-23 22:00:00
I was in a warm fruit mood, and since we are half way between winter and spring here in Adelaide (it was 70 F/21C today!!), apples, pears and strawberries seem to be the most abundant fruit around me. So I decided to make an apple, pear and strawberry crisp with five spice and fresh vanilla bean ice cream.

McLamb burger king 2007-08-21 22:10:31
Aussies love their lamb. I’ve seen it on menus here far more often than I did in the States, and it has intrigued me. Why so much lamb, Australia? It’s quite simple, really. Lamb = meaty nuggets of delicious goodness. That’s good enough for me.

Sydney, Day Two: Circular Quay, MCA, Dumplings, Emperors Garden Bakery, 360 bar) 2007-08-30 22:00:00
We woke up on our second day in Sydney
, and it was gloomy and rainy. We decided to brave weather head on, and went for a morning jog in Hyde Park. It was a nice park as far as parks go. No magical elves handing out cheeseburgers and cupcakes or anything like that. But it did have a nice Anzac memorial, and it seemed to be in the center of a lot of hustle and bustle, and I loved it. It reminded me of home in Chicago.

Sydney Trip, Part One (bills, Chinatown/Paddy's Market/ Viva Goa) 2007-08-28 22:00:00 My partner and I have officially been living in South Australia for six months today--a half a year living in another country. It’s sort of crazy when you think about it. It seems like just the other day, I was sitting at my receptionist job in downtown Chicago, fantasizing about moving here, going to school, eating my weight at sausage sizzles. And now I’m mowing meat pies and hugging koalas with the best of them.
