jimmy gnecco of ours & i over seven years ago in providence, rhode island, this picture was taken by my friend erin caruso. at the time, erin and i didn’t even know one another; however like synchronicity, everytime we ran into one another at an ours show, we’d happily smile and say hello like we had known each other for years. after this one particular show, some fans were hanging outside of ours tour bus and i was lucky enough to enjoy the moment. a boy had asked jimmy if he could play the song meet me in the tower because it wasn’t on that night’s setlist, and we all were able to appreciate a very special impromptu acoustic session.  a few months later, erin kindly surprised me with this black & white picture and to this day, it still takes me back to that exact moment of closing my eyes, feeling completely content and peaceful. .see ours live. july 13, 2007 montreal, que @ le gymnase … tickets… july 15, 2007 boston, ma @ p

It’s a universal truth that we all battle violence and negativity in our lives at times, its part of the life cycle of a slow or fast decomposition depending on how well you can fight this war to live. These Life Sore Spores that pollute our minds and infect our bodies are in a constant battle against our positive energy. Those heart worm menaces and parasitic rot seeping under our skin dividing again and again creating new problems forcing us to battle against them constantly as growths rise up. They are the sickness, sadness and ugliness we face in life.  This is the human war we all battle against in life, attacked at every waking and sleeping moment of our existence;

a few months ago, when i asked visual artist angie mason to kindly share some of her favorite musicians, she mentioned matson jones. after researching angie’s recommendation and listening over and over again to their debut, they too, have become a special favorite of my own. living in ft. collins, colorado, consisting of two cellists/vocalists, one upright bassist and a drummer, this four-piece presents eclectic layers of chaotic intensity that distinctly possesses their own artistic spirit and power. together they have made raw music that certainly proves in the best way possible, insanity does equal creativity. ive got people to see and places that i need to burn down and secrets that i need to burn out of my head l i s t e n a bit of arson never hurt anyone new york city fuck off sympathy [mj 2005] be sure to see this wonderful handmade video by angie mason featuring the music of matson jones.

“tell me about a moment, a song and what it meant to you”    Benzaiten Music Song: Sound and Vision by David Bowie [Sound & Vision, 1989] Context: After 4 years of living in Los Angeles, I was in a rut. Feeling stuck, like I wasn’t moving forward, and wasn’t moving backwards. “Pale blinds drawn all day / Nothing to do, nothing to say / Blue, blue” I had just been laid off from what at the time I considered to be a dream job as an executive at a major record label. I needed something to push me forward in the direction I needed to go, but so many of my fears of failure and rejection due to the recent bout with my expendability in my career, kept me from seeing that direction. I had a friend who was an avid skydiver and had been trying to convince me to go, and me being terrified of heights(as well as everything else) laughed at her. A re-occurring nightmare of mine was me falling downwards through the sky. One night, I was driving home from a weak inter

early this past spring, broken social scene’s feist released her third solo album *the reminder*.  after taking a late start for myself to actually relax with a pair of headphones and pay attention to her colorful style, the emotionally effective musical payoff came naturally. inbetween stretches of folk crescendos, upbeat jazz pop vibrancies and bittersweet realizations, this became my album of the summer. feist honestly attributes songwriting in such a heartfelt and personal way, that she easily brings to mind the exact simplicity of how good music should be.  the way of how its become so apparent that there needs to be more open feeling like this. the beauty discovered deep inside of feist’s intensity displays a humble approach to being vulnerable as a woman.. and completely powerful all at the same time. i love you more i love you more i dont know what i knew before but now i know i want to win the war i feel it all

2007-10-10 12:38:38
  the fall is my favorite time of year because of the energy i receive from it.  the feeling always comes in terms that keep reminding me of another new beginning.  on long windy roads amongst scattered trees, its a pleasure to closely stare out the window in hopes of finding those perfect autumn colors, but lately our country’s weather seems to be misleading the october leaves with its hot, humid summer days.  much like my mind, this most beautiful season doesnt seem to know when its suppose to begin again. however fortunately for now, all those special jewel tones of reds, oranges, yellows, greens and blues appear on another path through the colorful form of audiotherapy.   radiohead’s seventh studio album, in rainbows, easily delivers the magic and light that should always be craved in a new fall release.  fresh to the ear, some of the songs we have come to know and love over these waiting years diversified themselves into interchanging watercolors.

the first time i fell in love with devendra banhart was while living in austin, texas.  the year of 2004. running from every place and everyone, it was so easy to breathe into his tone of music as his gypsy sounds captivated my existence.  within devendra’s fifth release, smokey rolls down thunder canyon, he includes an eclectic assortment of genres blending folk, samba, reggae, doo-wop and motown into one entity. colorful and chaotic at times, the album overshadows as an overwhelming but engaging, listening experience.  thankfully, devendra’s quiet light appears literally at the end of tunnel, as the last song brightly shares a comforting and familiar depth inside of sadness, hope and sincerity.  my dearest friend you’ll soon begin to love again artwork by edvard munch

Dear Danielle, Tonight I ‘met’ (online) a young guy by the name of Roland. He lives 2 blocks down the street from me in Manhattan, we’re both avid Dark Tower fans (a stephen king novel that ironically features a main character named Roland) and share about a million other coincidences. We got to talking and he showed me your blog, Music is Art. I have to admit, I’m really not an avid blogger, and I don’t read a lot of blogs (mostly IGuessImFloating) but yours is downright captivating. You write beautifully and at the right moments, your design is beyond elegant and your mission statement calls after my own heart. It may sound trite to talk about the title of your blog, but I really do believe that many people forget that music is art. Music these days has been so co-opted by every other form of media that people forget that it’s not something you should take for granted or only enjoy when it comes coupled with something else. Music is itself a pheno

“tell me about a moment, a song and what it meant to you”  Covert Curiosity Song: The Iraq War by The Black Angels [Passover, 2006] Context: I was late in picking up the Black Angels’ latest album Passover, even though they are local and I try to hear any new local production as soon as possible. I listened through most of it in the car on my way home from the record store, and left it in the cd player for a few days to give it a closer inspection as time allowed. Result: Around the same time I received the horrible news that a close friend had been killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. He was another casualty of the war that had already taken the life of thousands of American soldiers and countless Iraqi citizens. I was angry. I wanted this war to be over, right that second. The Black Angels disc was still in the cd player, but it had gone silent. Not long after I realized this, a hidden track at the end of the album called “The Iraq War” started playing, and it

I like too many things and get all confused and hung-up running from one falling star to another till I drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion. jack kerouac was a very  intense and prolific voice of the beat generation.  celebrating almost fifty years ago, his famed novel *on the road* proved to pave a path along a yearning of discovering, experimenting and challenging oneself to take powerful chances. whether the symbolic lessons learned grew to be absolutely painful or energizing, it was the process of the searching and realization that there wasn’t anything more important to gain than the actual journey itself. living in lowell, massachusetts, jack grew up very spiritually attracted to nature. by pushing his own boundaries, he was able to create a style of writing that emotionally brought out controversy over art, drugs, music, sex and borderline behaviors. known for a love of being able to write to

being able to see tori amos last week at the wallingford theatre was one of those moments that made me feel again like life truly has some magical meaning.  feeling like a theatrical show, watching her confidently stroll out onto the stage as a doll with a blonde wig and cigarette that sensually lingered from her lips, through her fingers as she casually smoked and played the piano with her head slightly tilted to one side.  “isabel” the doll, grabbed my attention during the musical connection of the songs tombigbee as it intensely segued into scarlet’s walk.  both from the same mystical era, dancing at first to those quick notes, she moved her hips up above her piano bench, smiling proudly upon the stage. for the second half, inbetween switching her right hand from her shiny bosendorfer piano to her left hand on the organ that sat right in back of her, isabel held a black hurricane lantern that grew so bright as she delicately screamed “lea

Music has a huge influence on what I paint. I need to hear music to get me going, or I cannot manage to pick up a paint brush. Neko Case’s music is especially visual, and when I listen to her, magical pictures come to me, without having to actually look at anything. Finding, or creating images through the influence of words is a very appealing way to come up with ideas. (Far better than looking at what other’s are doing.) Bob Dylan’s music is the same deal. It is so visual as well. I guess that’s it… the music I choose has strong visual ideas, but even more…it is fun to sing and dance to while I am painting. I manage to lose myself and before I know it, by the end of the day, a brand new painting sits before me, and I have no idea where it came from! ..my favorite songs.. ‘Hold On, Hold On’ by Neko Case because I love to sing along really really loud. ‘Deep Red Bells’ by Neko Case because it’s dark and makes me really think
