radiohead :: thumbs down
2007-11-15 13:32:46
recently, the cover of radiohead’s “in rainbows” was released.  unfortunately, no album artwork ever graced our downloaded zip file but now its nice to have something official. its been quite the experience enjoying this entire album, taking in what is new and combining all the emotions of love, chaos and uncertainty that comes with listening to your favorite band’s recent release.  only radiohead could get away with placing their music online, having their faithful fans pay as they choose and placing us all into some type of pyschedelic and colorful daze. thumbs _down w e b c a s t november 9, 2007 in support of the new album, radiohead shared their *thumbs down webcast* that nicely filtered through the modem lines last week. based in their own residential oxford recording studio, the entire band seemed to have alot of fun spinning their own favorite records, laughing, dancing and staring into the camera while changing their own physical shapes and

album of the month
2007-11-12 11:54:56
when november comes around, it always seems fitting to hear nick cave & the bad seeds  *abattoir blues/the lyre of orpheus* perfect for those bitter cold stormy nights with a few candles lit and just the sound of the wind amongst raindrops, nick cave presents his lucky thirteenth album with such a real sensation of what it may feel like to experience heaven and hell colliding. released in 2004 and based as a two cd presentation, the main theme sets in on the desperation and struggle behind searching for a sense of inspiration and the insane reaction of what happens when you actually find it. each coordinated disc presents a different side to the situation; the *abattoir blues* contains chaotic and bruised loud memories along with the grace of london’s community gospel choir, while *the lyres of orpheus* depicts the true ancient story hidden inside the lyrics under such soft and calming pretenses. by never slipping into competition between each other’s direction, the

takashi murakami
2007-11-17 23:04:24
  japanese pop-art phenomenon takashi murakami is best known for sharing his contemporary artistic style that he originally defined as “superflat“.  when his work was first discovered, people couldn’t really understand his design or what he was trying to do. for murakami, that didnt matter as his mission was to create an image of anime in a brand new, light and peaceful way.   today he now respectively collaborates with louis vutton designer marc jacobs on handbags and accessories, and just made a video and the cover art for kanye west’s recent album graduation.  everything i’m not made me everything i am with andy warhol being one of his greatest inspirations, murakami embraces every edgy, daring and colorful element accessible to the public.  who he is and how he reaches his audience sees no line in fusion between commerce and art.  by running his own personal industry, kaikai kiki, out of large studio factories in brooklyn, ny and t

[my cousin stephanie was kind enough to create a reflection of a certain song and its special memory. it seemed rather fitting to share her contribution for thanksgiving, as my family including this sweet lil boy below, mean the world to me. every year comes another reminder of how lucky we are to have one another and for that, for all of you, im absolutely grateful. happy thanksgiving!] Song: Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World by Johnny Clegg and Savuka The first time I heard this song I was 19 or 20 years old, staying in Francestown, New Hampshire at my then boyfriend’s parent’s home. It was a small house party, and the people there were a laid-back, pot-smoking, micro-beer drinking kind of crowd. I remember our host taking out his guitar and someone brought out the bongo drums, and we all just danced around wildly. The music of Johnny Clegg played and he was singing to his young son, “When I hold your small body close to mine, I feel weak and strong at the same time, so few years

[recently, i started a lil feature of asking some very inspirational friends to personally write something simple regarding music thats very meaningful to them.  its always been genuinely important to make MIA more open to the community, as i welcome and know you all have very special thoughts and relations too.  with no further introduction, im quite honored to share ashley jackson-pierce’s contribution.  not only am i often in awe of her kindness, intelligence and taste but she is also one of my favorite writers.] Song: Let Go by Frou Frou [Details, 2002] I was completely in love with my best friend. Because he was already in a relationship (albeit a complicated and fruitless one), I knew better than to reveal my feelings. After a few miserable months of keeping my secret, I forced myself to move to another state and try to live without him. I hadn’t been gone two weeks before I cracked and confessed my love. The feelings were mutual, but we both knew it was th

italians do it better!

the new jersey/portland label italians do it better have certainly taken over the blogosphere in particular with their represented artists glass candy and the chromatics.  producer johnny jewel is the master behind both projects and has created his own unmistakable combination of soft downtempo, colorful disco pop and retro synth mixed within influences of italo and the sensuality of female vocals. new demos are kindly being shared upon each band’s personal myspace.  these tracks below are some of my favorites. glass candy covered in bugs rolling down the hills [from the album :: beatbox tour, 2007] ~*~ the chromatics healer running up that hill (kate bush cover) [from the album :: night drive, 2007] thankyou to ajp for the wonderful recommendation. artwork by italians do it better

ryan adams‘ recent album easy tiger brings me back to the first day i heard it.  just a few days after my mother’s stroke, it felt as if every day blended into one another.  going through feelings of complete sadness, anger and desperation, insanity, so drained and chaotic from too many tears, too much thinking and no sleep…. trying so hard to keep it all to myself, to push it all inward. when i finally realized — i needed to reach out, my best friend petrina was there from boston and brought ryan adam’s new album with her. a day after we had taken my mother out of the hospital, petrina and i decided to get some iced coffee and take a drive. we went to one of my favorite places where this private connecticut beach rests at the farthest end of all these secluded mansions.  sitting there with the windows open and an autumn breeze that came in softly from the water as the bright sun shined white light down, we listened to *easy tiger* over and over again.  the acou

one morning, artist robert shuttlesworth sent me a message that read: “i couldnt sleep last night… so i painted your picture. im calling it ‘danielle’s dream’.  i hope you like it. i can’t explain what happened… but i was moved by your art and this is my reflection.“ a few days later, the 18″ x 24″ original painting was kindly mailed to my door.  overcome by such a gesture, his work and actions truly moved me.  covered in shades of blue, japanese influences, floral patterns and musical dreams, it felt important for robb to be apart of music is art. recently, he contributed his own honest writing of a special song, moment and result, and im very thankful to share it. its easy to remember singer jenny lewis from her young acting days in movies troop beverly hills, foxfire and pleasantville. although it did take me awhile to really give her project rilo kiley the fair chance, recently, their fourth album *under the blacklight* has taken the spotlight deep inside of my headphones. with majestic stylings of dream-pop and melancholy simplicity, each song guides their way and secretly pulls you in. progressing but still maintaining, rilo kiley’s new-found sense of bravery satisfies as everlasting with pure appeal. ~*~ when you’re living in a dreamworld

artist feature :: danielle lamberti
2007-12-24 00:11:33
living in new york, danielle lamberti is a colorful painter and illustrator. growing up, she loved to draw and was extremely influenced by attending an all girl catholic high school and being surrounded by a fast-paced cultural environment. over the past few years, danielle interned for the jonathan levine gallery in new york where she assisted on artist installation projects for jeff soto and camille rose garcia, and developed a true appreciation for fine art. inside of her own work, complimentary with bright tones of rainbows and child-like imagination, a soft and feminine quality lies within her character dolls. however without overshadowing her lowbrow and superflat artistic style, hidden close underneath the doe-eyed expressions seems to be a sincere darkness that portrays subtle hints of the world’s joy and sadness. How does music influence your art? With out music I probably wouldn’t be painting. My first character I ever drew was a little walking egg
