Make Yourself at Home with Garden Furniture 2007-07-23 22:34:00 Almost every home has a garden, or, at least, a version of one. Sometimes, it's simply a small patch of daisies growing wild; sometimes, it's an expensive mix of flowers, trees, plants, and shrubs, carefully selected to create a specific effect, complement the color of the house or, perhaps, to match the garden furniture. It's easy to tell, by looking at someone's garden, whether that person is one who doesn't care much for yard work, and is satisfied with whatever flora just happens to be there, or somebody who takes great pride in the way her or his yard looks. Some people hire landscape architects to devise elaborate designs for their yards, while others consider it a pleasure to spend hours digging, planting, pruning, watering, and weeding, and seeding their own gardens. You don't even have to live in a house to have a nice garden. Many people who live in apartments spend a lot of time and money on gorgeous flowers and plants for their balconies and terraces. It really doesn't Read more: Furniture

Greenhouses: Why buy a greenhouse? 2007-07-23 22:31:00 There are many reasons to buy a greenhouse
. You may want to extend the growing season or be able to start the growing season a bit earlier than your zone will allow. With an insulated greenhouse, you can start seedlings much earlier outdoors. If you heat your greenhouse, you can have well established plants to put in your garden by the last frost. This means you can get an earlier harvest in the summer. Container plants that are kept in the greenhouse or moved into the greenhouse in the fall, can keep producing fruit and greens longer into the fall. Maybe you have always wanted to experiment with propagating or growing specialty plants and flowers, like tropicals, that will need extra care and can't be grown properly where you live. With a greenhouse, you can control the environment to allow you to grow just about anything your heart desires. You also might be interested in starting a business venture with a greenhouse. You can grow growing bedding plants, cut flowers, herbs or vegeta
The History of Water Gardens 2007-07-23 22:30:00 Take any major historical civilization, any major human development such as the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, or even the present-day concerns for the environment and conservation, and examine their effect on the art of garden design at the time - and what do you see as the major focal point in the center of the resulting gardens? Water. The city states that sprang up over 5,000 years ago in the Near East around the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, and also, of course, around the Nile in Egypt, probably gave rise to the art and practice of horticulture as we know it, for growing food and for social amenity value. Water was naturally important in these baking hot areas for the irrigation of crops, but here the ruling classes, which were synonymous with the high priests of the current religions, had the luxury of water channeled directly into the confines of their own palace grounds for the purposes of stocking fish and plants in pools, or the watering of trees.By the ninth cent Read more: Gardens

Organic Gardening Soil 2007-07-23 22:28:00 Now buy enough soil-mix (choose an organic mix) to cover your future garden to four inches (100mm) depth. If you are calculating cubic yards that is one ninth of a yard. In the metric system it is one tenth of a metre. So work out the area of your future garden in square yards and divide by nine, or in square metres and divide by ten, to know how many truckloads of soil you will need.Don't get six truckloads at a time unless you are a physical fitness fanatic, or unless you are ready to pay someone to move the soil from where it was tipped, round to your garden. When the soil is all spread four inches deep on top of your newspapers, buy two inches depth of compost (half the number of truckloads) and spread it. Now you are ready to start planting.Natural garden pest control will be easy if you start with the right soil.Don't worry about it if you intend to use the existing soil (enriched with compost) for vegetable organic gardening. I'll tell you why in a moment. You won't find this Read more: Organic

Preventing Herons From Feasting On Your Koi Carp 2007-07-23 22:25:00 "Over The Garden Wall With Oaky" Today I want to help you to prevent Herons from feasting on your precious Koi Carp. Herons are undoubtedly the most beautiful, elegant and majestic of any marshland and wading birds, but they have one major flaw. Herons simply love to feast on Koi, and where better to find Koi than an unattended Koi pond in your garden? To a Heron your well-stocked Koi pond is like being handed a free supermarket trolley dash around the fish section, to a Heron your beautiful Koi pond represents, a secluded free, and private dinning area, stocked to the gunnels with succulent fish, just sitting there waiting to be eaten. When you first notice a Heron in your garden, you may not even think of these birds as a danger. Herons are 2 or 3 feet tall, with an extremely large wingspan. They appear to be extremely graceful until you realize that the beautiful sight you were just looking at could have potentially been a thief caught in the act, and now basking in the sunshine, af

Selling Your House? Simple Gardening Tasks Can Help 2007-07-23 22:18:00 When we think about getting a house ready to sell, we often focus on the structure itself. We ask ourselves if the walls need painting, should the carpets be cleaned or replaced, do any of the plumbing fixtures need to be repaired, etc. However, the item that is seen first, by every potential buyer that drives by your house, is your front lawn and garden. Spending some extra time on your landscaping before you list your house with a real estate agent can make a big difference in how long it takes a house to sell.Think of it this way - would you feel comfortable with the idea of seeing a doctor if all the plants in his waiting room were dead? It sets up some negative emotions, doesn't it? The same thing happens when people drive by a house that is surrounded by dying, weedy grass, overgrown bushes, and cracked sidewalks. Since the impression is on a purely emotional level, it may be difficult for your buyers to overcome. There's a good example of this problem right now, in my neighborh Read more: House

Petite Substitutes for Petunias in the Annual Border 2007-07-23 22:10:00 I don't like petunias. There - my prejudices are out in the open. I won't try to justify my dislike for the ubiquitous petunia, but if you're looking for an annual flower that will fill in some space in your flower border, and you're tired of petunias too, here are three of my favorites. One of my favorite petunia substitutes is Calibrachoa, which is actually a distant relative of the petunia. Calibrachoa, sold as 'Million Bells', is a low-growing plant that spreads and trails over baskets and walls, much like a miniature petunia. The flowers are much smaller, though, and the leaves are finer than the petunia. The plants continue to spread and bloom from late spring to frost in a carefree manner that any busy gardener will enjoy. The Calibrachoa blooming in my garden has continued to look fantastic in spite of several weeks of weather in the upper 90's. The blossoms self-clean, so no deadheading is needed. Unfortunately, this also means that the Calibrachoa will not set seed, and Read more: Annual

Weathervanes - Made With In Great Designs And Function 2007-07-23 22:06:00 A weathervane is a simple device indicating wind direction. It is a moveable device that, when attached to a rooftop or other elevated object, clearly and easily shows the direction of the wind. The device's original name is a wind vane, for obvious reasons, and purists today will still refer to it as such. A properly designed, balanced and crafted weathervane will customarily point into the wind, although some weathervanes have been designed to do just the opposite: for example, a weathervane crafted as a dragon may be designed to point his back to the wind instead of his head, this is due to the nature of the creature and the myths that surround it.Weathervanes are classified by two basic, but distinct rules, of design. The ornament must have unequal area on either side of the center, and must also have equal mass on either side of the center as well. The pointer must be capable of moving freely and fluidly on its axis as well. So in other words, the weathervane must be balanced so Read more: Designs

The Competition Can't Stand Up to the Ventless Gel Fireplace 2007-08-08 10:10:00 For years, there have been three main types of fireplaces; the traditional, the gas and the electric. In recent years, a new fireplace has brought the same fireplace enjoyment and comfort as the others. Although, the Ventless Gel Fireplace
has several advantages. One reason is that the ventless gel fireplace isn't hard to install at all. You won't need to knock any holes in the walls or build any chimneys. Out of the box, it takes no more than forty-five minutes to have a fire roaring in the fireplace. Another thing is that the ventless gel fireplace won't cause any health hazards. The real flames coming out of the fireplace aren't emitting ominous gases that are dangerous to breathe. And major amounts of water vapors aren't emitted into the atmosphere where they settle throughout the structure to create mildews as well as other hazardous fungi. A final reason, safety is a major factor with the ventless gel fireplace. Sparks won't fly out of your fireplace putting your home in da Read more: Stand
A New Approach To My House And Garden 2007-08-08 10:08:00 There are so many things that we can do to fill our time. Through the years my hobbies have changed based on what stage in life I am in. When I was in high school I loved to sew. I made many of the clothes that I wore and I also sewed some clothing for my friends. I made many gifts using my mother's sewing machine. When I was in college I did not have the time or the space to sew. I started playing racquetball to fill what spare time I had. As I got older and had a family I did not have the time or the energy for racquetball any more. At that point in my life I was lucky to get everything done that needed to get done so I did not have a great deal of free time. Now my children have grown and I have extra time. Garden Planning - Planning Your Conatiner Garden 2007-08-08 10:08:00 There are many aspects to bring into consideration when planning a garden of any kind. The first step is to draw up a design of what you desire your garden to look like and what you want to include in your garden. Location of the garden plays a vast role in the success of a garden. The garden needs to receive the right amount of sunlight and water. Pick a spot in the yard where there is plenty of sunlight, easy access to water, and not in the way of anybody or anything else. Check the soil for good drainage. Your garden will do best if it gets about one inch of rain per week. If you live in a region where it doesn't rain that often or much you will have to use a sprinkler system to water your garden. You can install an irrigation system that runs underground, use a regular garden hose with a sprinkler attached, or use a soaker hose. These are all great to make use of because they will slowly water the garden and let the water soak deep into the soil Now that you have your plan drawn Read more: Garden
Gardening Equipment - Equipment Needed For Your Garden 2007-08-08 10:07:00 Taking a walk through a gardening store can be a little overwhelming when you're looking for gardening equipment and tools. There are many tools that would come in handy, but are not necessarily needed to have a successful garden. Here are a few items that will be very useful when controlling weeds, watering the garden, and planning your garden. You will first need to purchase or rent a rotary tiller. Rotary tillers come in an array of sizes. A wider rotary tiller can be used to cultivate the soil in the spring or fall to prepare your garden for planting. A smaller rotary tiller can be used in the garden during the growing season. The narrow tines make it easier to maneuver around plants and between rows. You can find rotary tillers that run off of gas or electricity. Many rotary tillers are being made now to operate with only one hand. A hoe is also a great tool that can be used when the weeds just start to grow. Take your time to go in between the plants and loosen the soil. Make su Read more: Equipment

Greenhouses - The Perfect Greenhouse 2007-08-08 10:06:00 Greenhouses are buildings made to grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers. They store heat that the sun produces and creates a warm setting for your plants. The buildings have glass or plastic walls and roof. The frame can be made of metal, wood, or plastic. Greenhouses come in a variety of sizes. They can also be built in many different locations. The first greenhouses were built in Italy in the sixteenth century. The purpose of the greenhouse was to store exotic plants from around the world and keep them alive. An environment needed to be created in Italy that the plants were used to. Thanks to many of the trial and errors they experienced in the sixteenth century we are now able to have greenhouses. This idea soon spread around the world. When choosing the size of your greenhouse, consider what your needs are. If it is for a hobby a smaller greenhouse close to the home would do fine. The more plants that you want to grow in the greenhouse the bigger the greenhouse you will need. Make s Read more: Perfect
