Oh, man, I came home so psyched about the other coast, so excited about feeling better (yay, antibiotics!) and so glad to see everyone, and now I'm coughing and can't breathe again. Really. So both things were true, I have bronchitis, and a serious allergy to something in the air in my house. Partay.Let's see, good news, maybe alphabetized. Sleep & Santa
1970-01-01 00:59:59
There is a layer of drowsiness with Zyrtec I've noticed. It makes me sleep about an hour longer at night, which may actually be a good thing temporarily, but also makes me wish I could drink coffee. I find myself eyeing caffeinated soap, but I'm so allergic to soaps in general and caffeine in particular, using it probably wouldn't be prudent. We're wrapping presents in fabric this year. I'm thinking it may actually be cheaper than paper. To use even less paper, as a rule Santa doesn't wrap--he never has. He does a presentation on the coffee table, no name tags even, just groupings of presents that are hopefully obvious. The kids eat it up.Why is it so many things happen at once this time of year? It's crazy. I can't even begin to tell you, but will catch you up with all of it as soon as I have a nanosecond.

Christmas List & Reads
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Here are a few of the things Santa's bringing to our house this year.Wizardology by Gilbert et al, Redwall books, Lego and Playmobil sets (Vikings, Harry Potter), Banana Republic gift certs, some items from Williams Sonoma (apron, fresh potholders, etc.), a guitar for K (maybe a Baby Taylor), Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault by Stephen R. C. Hicks, Land's End gift cert for Mom, some sweet little things from Hearthsong, and maybe an item or two from ThinkGeek. I really like the plush microbes. I also absolutely adore the elephant at Muji. I'm begging my SIL in London for that one.And last but not least, for all of us, from the house elves:Big Ball of Blame: Because Passing Blame to Others Shows You Care, by Miriam Zellnik, you can check that out with a picture at bn.com, amazon doesn't have a pix for some reason. I feel blamey already...(And to answer your technical question, I'm not putting links to Amazon in general because I'm not con

In the wake of a new rash of conspiracy impassioned emails, that I have recieved at least twice before from friends with the best intentions, I must post this public service announcement. It's really important to check any and all "useful" emails forwarded to you by well-meaning friends, family and co-workers at http://www.snopes.com. Really important. Also you must know that if you email your Rep, he or she will never see it. Consistent snail-mail and involvement in local politics are the only two things that have ever had any effect. And last, but not least, most petitions you sign are either hopelessly out of date, or sheer unanticipated volume of returned petitions has killed the project. Not always, but it's worth considering.Oh, and I always immediately delete all chain letters and afore mentioned petitions. Even if I adore the sender. Always. This ends public service announcement number 1.

The Insidious Rainbow Fish
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Okay, here's the nitty gritty about that beloved toddler's book, The Rainbow Fish. I'm asked about this at homeschool events regularly, so I'm just going to give you the quick version. The lucky little rainbow fish is covered in beautiful scales, i.e. points of privilege, which the peers of the rainbow fish resent. The result is problematic in two huge ways. 1) The rainbow fish bends to heavily applied peer pressure. Not a good example. 2) It denies it's gift, and redistributes it's wealth to the others so they may all be the same. No one is special. No one is gifted. No one is different. There are two problems I see with the second point. a) If no one can be different, the ultimate result is facism. b) If no one can be gifted differently from others, some even exceptionally so, then the world, besides being excedingly dull, would have succumbed to Marxist ideals. How is any of those messages good for kids?If you doubt that Marxist ideals are being instituted and disseminated in pub

Haaaaaaa. Breathing deeply.Since I have actually generated a microscopic income by shamelessly exposing you all to weird advertizing, and having reviewed my fairly diverse and interesting readership, I've decided to put up more ads, offer an email option, visibly support democracy in Iran, and come clean as an insignificant microbe in the ecosystem. This is big stuff. I wasn't sure if I could sleep last night. I felt like I had just eaten at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Ungh. It was much harder to become so public doing all of that than usual when pressing the "publish post" button. I actually had to close my eyes, turn my head and press "enter". More than once. Aaaaaahhh! Hard. T talked me through it. Wonderful man.Still I have to say I'm doing pretty well for what started as yelling into the abyss! It's feeling durn near like a community! But if I'm an insignificant microbe, can't I at least be plush? The mono one is kinda cute.I bagged the Small Group tonight. I didn't think I coul

After that pity party I sat around for about an hour wondering if I should curl up in a ball and cry, or do something. So I completely re-arranged the bedroom, took out clutter, threw things away, found donatable items, moved the bed (T helped), washed the pillows, duvet, dog bed, mopped, and threw away some more. It took all afternoon, and I was still at it up to dinner time.Mom, bless her, made some whole grain pasta and a phenomenal sauce. Giant slices of sauteed yellow peppers, big chunks of eggplant and whole criminis. About 12 cloves of garlic, whole. Diced tomatoes, fresh Cuban oregano. As she put it, it's great when there's "enough" garlic. Yes, ma'am.So achingly sore, I sat in our new, serene room, in my new meditation spot, with my new little table for an altar. I lit some champa, sat on a yoga block, and meditated with K for a whole 10 minutes. Well, she lasted about five. It was lovely. As if all that isn't enough, I woke this morning to the smell of T's fresh bread. An

The Retro Housewife
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Just found this one. She doesn't post often, but I loved her "Diagnosis: Male" post. I wonder if she homeschools...I'm going to keep reading and keep you posted.I bid on a citrus tree at the delightful Rotary Christmas party and "won" it (for a few bucks over value!). I got to the nursery and they were ready to give me a navel orange, but I wanted pummelo. I didn't realize everything about it is bigger. 25 ft high by 20 ft wide. There's only one spot for it, that does flood, but is perfect in every other way. I love pummelos. I also just found out about a red navel orange that's yummier than a blood orange, and grows better down here, so that might be next. Then a macadamia. We're going to end up in a jungle.

More, In Spite of Myself
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I said I wouldn't complain the next day in my last post, and then didn't post at all.Hmmm.Let me just say one more thing about this religion issue, then I'll give it a rest for a while. Maybe. The gang at church who are doing the Jesus Seminar-based class assume too much when they assume everyone in the class is a Democrat. (One guy called Marcus Borg a Paul Tillich-lite!) They are going to be livid when they find I am not one. Especially the Integrity gang. That's too bad because the Log Cabin Republicans do exist, and would be supportive. It is not necessary to embrace a liberal political ideology, like a package deal, just because you embrace a liberal theological perspective. Some of the participants have been very offended by this assumption. I'm sort of used to it, and it offends me a lot less than theologically conservative thought. One is less likely to be killed over it, in the grand scheme of things. In fact, I'll go so far as to say if you don't have freedom, and defen

Mostly Science & A Little Raw Food
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Haven't been sure what to do about science for this coming year. Not crazy about the year two Sonlight Science because of so much creationist content, and we've already really read a bunch of the other books. Maybe I'll buy the general ones and Marie Curie. So then I was thinking we should go for year three science, but that could be more than we want to tackle, what with travel to Denver in Aug/Sept for six weeks, maybe a few hurricanes, maybe buying a place in New Mexico, then holidays and the Brits coming for T's 40th, etc. I want to take it a little easy this year with school and concentrate on my health.Incidentally, I've been prescribed a raw-foods (with grass-fed creatures) diet by my allopathic CNP. That's the second time an allopathic CNP in a specialist's office has steered me that way. I have to say, when you're persistently, mildly ill for soooo long, it gets pretty old, and there are even forays into scariness, and at this point I'm willing to consider all sorts o

If you're interested in Oakmeadow, their book list is in the bookstore, just go to oakmeadow.com, hit curriculum under the bookstore heading, then go to view directory on that page.Do you know about Ambleside Online? Their History & Geography, as well as their Lit curriculum are phenomenal. It's a literature-based program (very Charlotte Mason), and it's FREE. All you need is a good printer, and a few purchased books. There is no study guide to speak of, but there is a 36 wk lesson plan, and you probably know how to ask narration questions at this point. If not, just peruse their site and you'll get the jist of it. Some people really like the Beautiful Feet guides for the Holling Clancy Holling books and history, including states' history. It's a religious (Christian) publisher, but I haven't found it overbearing.Ambleside also goes in-depth on the nature study how-to. It's really the only science they do though. Some of the readers in Oakmeadow's fourth grade are on Amble

War of the Worlds
1970-01-01 00:59:59
How was your 4th? We sat on the roof of the truck in the driveway and watched the fireworks at the beach, while swatting mosquitos...Also went to War of the Worlds , which was far too well done and kind of depressing, with upturn only at the end. I should have read the book in my seriously Sci-Fi days. It should be rated R just for the convincing acting. Terrified the children. K said she wasn't sure if she loved it or hated it, and wanted to leave at one point. They couldn't even watch the awful parts, or listen, and I didn't tell them all of what happened until today, since there were no nightmares. Gross-out. B loved what he saw of it. Go figure.Great story, of course, and well done. Fantastic acting, especially for Sci-Fi and FX were seamless. Interesting message, and actual military action, tons. But gross and upsetting enough that I'm not going to watch it again any time soon. The 9/11 overlap was hard for us. Really hard. I think the kids didn't catch as much of that as I did

Well. I can't believe I called it. Mom saw Spielberg on Turner Classic do a quick bit about War of the Worlds, and he sounded like a reluctant Sept. 12th Republican. Does that really offer any insight about Tim Robbins, though? Still strange.Spent the day looking at edibles for zone 10a. Mostly yummy sweet stuff, but no protein. No nuts. Maybe cashews...I'm not sure what to do about the no real nuts. Bamboo shoots. Beans. Fish. I know those dreadful looking Muscovy ducks are mighty tasty...and they keep the snails under control.Creating the canopy/hammock forrest food system sounds like fun. I didn't know avocados all have different seasons. I'll have to pick three to get really yummy ones for most of the year. The rest of the stuff is mostly sweet. Arrowroot cannas. I was mostly looking at trees, shrubs and vines. I know I can round thngs out with annuals. I wonder what grain besides corn will grow here?

Episcopalia, Integrity, Apology
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I have to say my last post regarding Integrity sounded a bit sour & dramatic. It's how I felt at the time, but I feel like I should apologize. So much has happened that is good and whole and true since then, that event is dwarfed in comparison, and I feel petty for having engaged so deeply in that one small thing.I also was a bit hard on the vestry. Each individual is coming from his or her own frame of reference, and a beating over the head never convinced anyone to change. It's also not my job to change people's way of thinking. I think it's very important to engage in active silence, sometimes, and allow grace to do it's job.Action, without the chest-beating attitude I displayed, is vital. My example in the Guess Who's Coming to Dinner post left much to be desired. It was sensationalist and really rather pointless venting. I apologize. On the brighter side, things have not only calmed down for the better, but the group is finding great support. There was an announcement in this

Food Thoughts
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I was perusing the web for a good nutrition lesson, and some lunch ideas a few years ago, when I discovered these. I decided to re-visit the site and found not only some truly sensible pyramids, but a great lunch planner for kids.On the homepage in the "wise eating" section are "traditional diet pyramids" and "school lunch plus" sections positively rock. Don't be intimidated by the form you have to fill out to get the high-res downloads of the pyramids. I have never recieved anything from Oldways I've not requested.I did ask them why there are no Northern diet pyramids, and what someone of mixed Northern Euro and Native Amer heritage is supposed to eat. I'm guessing the answer is Mediterranian. Go figure. I asked them if they could do one for informational purposes only, and if raw meat (see link below) was the problem. I didn't bother to ask why dairy is in the pyramid for adults. I actually eat some dairy, but not for any good reason. Let's see if they get back to me.For more r

Religion & Politics
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Okay, clearly it's time for a change. I'm going to get K in some new art and acting classes so she's got a broader picture of things. And that got me thinking I should probably do the same for myself.I miss yoga, so that's one thing to do. Tim and I were thinking that might be a good date, actually. I really love that idea the more I think about it. Tea at Starbucks after. Maybe even get some pals to join us. I'm working on the early planning stages of an Integrity group at church, so that's another something. It's a much needed ministry in this town. I should also probably go to the Mindfulness Meditation more.Sunday night is hard, though. Also, between Mindfulness and Integrity, the politics are going to veer so far left, I'm not sure I'll be able to breathe. I just read in New York Magazine about the RatherBiased.com guys describing themselves as Liberal Conservatives. I've actually never even been to the site, nor read their commentary, so I can't say if we're the same f

We just watched SuperSize Me! I am so disgusted, and not really surprised. My daughter keeps saying she knew it was bad food, but she didn't realize how bad. What an awesome public service! How many thank you notes he must get!We had a lovely afternoon of Spanish class, I taught kids and moms knitting class, Spanish in the car, the library to pick up the fifth Harry Potter book, and some Chinese New Year books. I'm afraid we stayed up too late reading Harry Potter, it is soooo hard to put down. I want to sneak it off to my room and read it, but I'd be up all night. I do really miss Chinese New Year. Having grown up on the edge of Chinatown, it just doesn't seem right to ignore it. It's like ignoring the 4th of July.I have to continue with Origin of Consciousness anyway. Chapter two is good. Dense, but good. He gets into some layered, but effective, terminology to make more clear the role of metaphor in the development of language. He compares the analog of a map to land to the ana

Shark Valley And A Dead Pet
1970-01-01 00:59:59
We have a small sadness. One of our kitties has to be "put down" this morning. Frankly she's gone a bit mad and has begun to bite hard and unpredictably with her one remaining fang. She was never very nice, but getting the new cat, who is so sweet, apparently has put her over the edge. And she attacks him, but is too old, so gets badly hurt. Hundreds of dollars and several infected punctures on her and on us later (the children have been spared anything too serious so far), it must be done. I hate it. But that's part of having pets, I suppose. Feeling a bit blue. We've got a huge meeting with a big potential client tomorrow, so at least I'll be distracted. On a happier note, we're going to meet a Medieval scholar friend from NYC in Shark Valley this weekend, so I'm glad to have something to look forward to. We get our puppy the week after, so the timing is really perfect.I haven't told you about the puppy? It's an adventure just to get her. She's in New Hampshire, but T is going

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Just did the Belief-O-Maticâ„¢ quiz to see my best religion matches. It was amusing, and sort of surprising. Reading their cursory points on each religion was fascinating. It was like a ViewFinder of a the Metropolitan Musem, little postcards of the masterpieces. It can't be easy to be that concise about religions and stay acceptably accurate.Mom is gung-ho into Thich Nath Hanh these days. I keep tuning into the Deer Park Monastery to hear the Discourse on Love sung by one of the nuns. I think I have to buy it. I also like his modern take on Buddhism and Mindfulness. And the loving kindness meditation as found in the Plum Village Chanting & Recitation Book is very powerful. There was a bit of drama, which I tried so hard to avoid, regarding Integrity. We asked Trinity if we could use the church's address for our group, and were waiting for the vestry to meet for a reply. The rector has agreed to celebrate at the first meeting, and the wardens are both friendly to us and this idea,

Singapore Math Thoughts
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Just FYI, some Singapore basics:1. Order through Sonlight because they have a teacher's manual with extras (drills, games, answers) and scheduling all laid out for 36 weeks.2. Consider ordering Miquon too. It's conceptual in a way no other program matches. You'll need Cuisenaire rods (preferably wooden, unless you insist upon linking ones), and you'll use them for a long time. Miquon is also the only program that introduces all four operations in the first year. But it's not enough by itself. I think the Lab Sheet Annotations are at the library. If not, you could borrow from someone, or easily find it used, to get a feel for the way the sheets work. I only glanced at mine a few times. Sonlight also has a companion book for it with extra games and such, similar to Saxon K, but I don't feel it's necessary unless it's the only program you're using.3. Singapore starts with a concrete, action-based version of the concept, then puts it on paper, and finally drills the abstract equat

Jews at the Holocaust-denier convention in Tehran? Sensationalist more than outrageous. They should have said "some fringe moonbat Jews not typically representative of Jews", but that's hard to fit in a headline, and doesn't have the same draw. BBC nitwits. Although I have to say I fell for it, and am linking it, so it had its intended effect of drawing traffic. It's just journalistic grift, and I got snookered. Next time I'll know better. The real horror in it is the propensity of fringe types of any religion to use their own scripture to prop up their kookiness when anyone knows you can make statistics or scripture serve any way you like, as with terrorists for example. There's even a passage on it in the Bible when Satan does just that. I always cringe when I even hear the word "Satan", it's so arcane a concept, so problematic, so ill-used by the same wacky gang. (Big words from the great Shaitan, I'm sure). To clarify, lest you think I draw a parallel between these anti-Zionis

Ads & Bads
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I cracked the Adsense wierdness, I hope.It seemed to me the Blogger-generated ads were just targeting to my labels, I think...and it was not good targeting, totally not. But I went directly to Adsense, per my old ads, designed, and plopped them in using the html widget. They're better targeted to actual content now. I don't pretend to know why, but I'll take it.If I'm going to shamelessly subject you to ads, they can at least be sane, and maybe even helpful/likely to be clicked, right? That way instead of being chokable, like they have been, they could even be good, and I might even earn more than $1.74 a month! Do not disabuse me of my dreams. To bed with me. A designer we work with had bronchitis, went one round of antibiotics, seemed better, relapsed, was still coughing at the end of the second round, got an x-ray, has walking pneumonia, declined admission to the hospital (!), but has to go back in three days. No thank you! My biggest fear is having to take some nasty meds to kil

Vignettes, Ideas & A Road Trip

Baby music is essential in the car. We just got Babyrock Radiohead. Very effective. She was asleep within minutes and we were entertained and pulling an in-car karaoke. They were a bit bugged out with Christmas excitement, and therefore driving her nuts. On the way from the food court a heated discussion ensued regarding the best course of action: put food away and walk through Dillard's, or walk outside to the car and keep eating. They went the outside route, but the kids still wanted to argue about it. Mom was fairly pulling out her hair and finally insisted they Stop Being Dialectical. There was a brief silence. But enquiring minds (that's B this time) wanted to know, "What's dialectical?"She wanted to know why we've

Katrina, Denver
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It is, of course, awful.Between tears I've called the church, and a friend of mine with family in LA. The church, naturally, being Episcopalian (or maybe it's just Trinity), is not answering the phone, hasn't sent out email, and is generally mysterious and vague. So I called a friend from homeschooling. She may take us up on the offer of our house. Her parents-in-law are high and dry, and keeping a stiff upper lip, but it may get worse, even for them, before it gets better.Ugh.Charlie was only 30 miles North of us. Too close. And Ivan was dead set on us before it turned. Denver 's looking better and better.Funny thing about Denver, though. If CO is a red state, you wouldn't know it here. It's an odd change from Naples. It makes me feel like maybe we're uptight...then again, I don't believe in the benefit of being lax with child care, personal hygiene, and security related politics. But it's very, very pleasantly easygoing and mellow. Though definitely not in that Southeastern m

Did you notice I'm Flappy? An actual Flappy Bird. I'm not sure how it's happened, but I'll take it.We need to get a Borat party together again. I have to see it once more in the theatre. We were talking about it at a party and we who had seen it (oh, and blacking it out to the knee! and the stupid fist! red water-panties!) were like secret initiates, with those who hadn't just politely trying to take in the intensity of our reactions while having no real clue about the importance of the film.In a similar vein, as far as I can tell having only read the preface and two chapters of Lamb, T's latest read is keeping us laughing. The new priest gave it to everyone in his small group for Christmas. I've never even heard of it. T is in stitches.Shifting gears, both monarch caterpillars B collected the other day are going to be chrysalids by tomorrow morning, which is just as well because our milkweed is dying from an old weedwacking injury I stepped on and I can't find any more in town
