I let them make the decisions and then cast the tie-breaking vote where necessary. Justin and Avinash, thank you.

Google Analytics Makeover Complete 2007-07-21 16:35:00 This week in e-commerce news, Google
officially completes the migration to its new Analytics
interface, Google unveiled a new interface for its Analytics program about two months ago, and since then has been migrating users over to the new platform, alerting them with e-mails to their Gmail accounts as they make the switch. According to the company's blog, the swap-out is officially complete as of yesterday.Analytics users should have no problem adapting to the upgrade, according to Google's blog: "We've changed the interface to be more intuitive and navigable while keeping the functionality of the product the same. The small amount of learning involved can be easily picked up by interacting with the new interface. Also, the Report Finder tool will help you see how to do common tasks in the new interface, and the Product Tour highlights the changes in the interface for you."

Tracking RSS Subscriptions with Google Analytics 2007-07-26 16:49:00 There are other problems such as how people interact with your RSS content, but even being able to determine which sources of traffic result in subscribers would be a huge commercial advantage for bloggers, allowing them to focus their efforts on traffic generation strategies that will grow their business. Hamlet Batista has been doing some digging, and has worked out how to track RSS subscribers based upon the source of traffic, and it even works with Feedburner's RSS to Email feature.

Google has awarded Docklands company iQ Content with "Google Analytics Authorised Consultants" 2007-07-27 17:22:00 Web analytics is a process of systematically evaluating a website to determine what's really happening when visitors locate and use a website. It allows the stakeholders to better understand their website, make web design changes based on data factors as oppose to 'feel good' factors which leads to better usability and return on investment, which is of particular importance in the age where web design and development can be a pricey exercise. Google
's free Analytics
tool measures where commercial website traffic is coming from, whether online advertising is bringing visitors to your website and ultimately whether those visitors are being converted into paying customers. .

Google Analytics Up and Running Again 2007-07-31 16:15:00 The Google
Analytics
blog announced on Monday that many users were subject to a Temporary Reporting Delay. Since this was in place since Saturday night, many of the affected users were already aware that something was up. The post reassures us that no data will be lost in the process. An update on the situation late on Monday stated that this situation was almost fully rectified. I can confirm that the accounts I am aware of that were affected do seem to have up to date data at this point in time, so this update seems to be in place, for some of us at least. It does look, however, like there is still some data missing from this past Saturday.

Google Phone, New Ad Platform 2007-08-02 19:32:00 Google is drafting specifications for phones that can display all of Google’s mobile applications at their best, and it is developing new software to run on them. The company is conducting much of the development work at a facility in Boston, and is working on a sophisticated new Web browser for cellphones. Google is hoping that multiple operators will offer its phone. And Google is ready to relinquish some control over design, allowing manufacturers to create devices based on a common set of specifications. Google has approached several wireless operators in the U.S. and Europe in recent months, including AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, people familiar with the situation say. T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, appears to be the furthest along in considering it, these people say. Andy Rubin, who helped design T-Mobile’s popular Sidekick phone, now works at Google and is involved in its handset Read more: Google

Web analytics can boost small business profits 2007-08-06 20:39:00 The Internet is the great equalizer of all businesses. Small companies can generally compete with large corporations on a global basis using the right search engine optimization techniques and by improving the odds that their Web site appears on the first page of a World Wide Web search. But to stay competitive and truly understand their customers and market, small business owners need to incorporate Web analytics into their strategic plan.

Is Google Analytics the Killer App? 2007-08-04 16:38:00 This is his opening statement, and I don’t know where to begin. Statements like “killed the web analytics software industry” and “simply a quantum leap above any other analytics product on the planet” are bizarre. Is Dainow paying any attention to the web analytics market? Omniture continues to accelerate, WebTrends has released a great new version of their application, Microsoft is about to release their own free offering, And don’t get me wrong: I really do like Google
Analytics
, and I use it regularly, but there is absolutely no possible justification for saying that Google Analytics
is a quantum leap better than other available applications. Google Analytics has some pretty visualizations, a slick UI, and does a good job of integrating with Google’s search marketing products, but a “quantum leap?” I think not.

Demystifying the Conversion Rate 2007-08-10 21:50:00 Conversion rate optimization has grown to buzz word status within the online marketing industry. Some of the original “conversion marketing” firms like Future Now, Inc. has spent significant time over the past ten years educating the market about the importance of improving conversion rates. At a time when “getting traffic” was the primary focus, most companies overlooked the value of conversion rate optimization.

RawVoice announces Release of RawVoice Statistics 2007-08-12 16:27:00 For many media producers who distribute their content online, usage tracking is an arduous task. Unfortunately, services such as Google Analytics don't provide usable metrics for streaming and downloadable media. With the release of their RawVoice Statistics

First-time gathering of web analytics professionals to be held in Napa, CA on September 20-21 2007-08-18 16:51:00 Why should you attend? The main reason, I think, is because this isn't going to be one of those conferences where speakers hold forth one after the other. X Change is built around small group discussions facilitated by expert practitioners. This gives everyone a chance to share, brainstorm, and get involved.

Understanding Web Analytics What does all of the jargon actually mean? 2007-08-16 18:36:00 How many people visit your Web site every day? What are visitors doing when they get there? Which features are most popular? Was that big redesign worth the money? If these types of questions keep you awake at night, Web site analytics can provide some peace of mind. Analytics
packages can help you track your site's statistics, allowing you to see how many people are looking at which page, what sites your visitors are coming from, who your users are, and more. This information can in turn help you measure traffic, understand your visitors' needs and behavior, and gauge click-through rates to new content or features.

The Web Analytics Revolution 2007-08-15 09:15:00 The real power of the current crop of analytics packages (Site Catalyst, HBX, Google Analytics
, WebTrends, Index Tools and so on) lies in their versatility and ability to deliver value to so many different types of business. You don’t need to invest a huge amount to get an analytics program up and running, although (of course) the more advanced your requirements, the greater the setup and maintenance cost. For any site with a commerce element, analytics should be a no-brainer, but there are less obvious (though no less important) applications also.
Web Analytics - An Hour a Day 2007-08-20 17:52:00 Web analytics is an important area for online merchants. A greater understanding of how visitors are finding and navigating your site can help you improve the usability, navigation and promotional efforts of your website, thus increasing your sales. So I was eager to review Avinash Kaushik's new book, "Web Analytics
: An Hour a Day" In skimming the first sections of "Web Analytics," I was overwhelmed - I found it complex, and more geared to the enterprise user than the small online seller.
Web Analytics Association Sets Measurement Standards 2007-08-26 17:08:00 Web Analytics
Association (WAA) released 26 standard definitions for Web site traffic measurement and analysis, aimed at eliminating the confusion around the most basic Web analytics terms. For almost two years, the WAA's Standards
Committee worked with Web analytics vendors, agencies, practitioners and industry leaders like Omniture to develop standard definitions for the most widely used terms--namely "page views," "visits/sessions," and "visitors'"--and then expanded them this year, to include an additional 23 broader metrics.

Should you use a free Web analytics solution? 2007-08-23 14:10:00 Lately there has been a lot of talk about free Web analytics solutions like Google Analytics and Microsoft Gatineau. On this subject, the most common question I get from readers is “Should we consider a free solution?” The answer, of course, is “It depends.” A more likely scenario is that companies using free solutions will train internal resources using books and classes available in the marketplace today, slowly benefiting from their education over time. But again, Web analytics is hard, and many of the subtle aspects of analytics take far more than an hour a day to learn.
Web Analytics Interview 2007-08-28 22:38:00 In terms of structure, we’re exclusively a web analytics consultancy (and a hands-on one at that). We don’t do design. We don’t do Bid Management. Just analytics. That makes it more likely that you’ll be engaged with someone with real experience and expertise - not easy to find these days. We’re also not about a single product. When you work with professional services teams from a vendor, you’re always working with consultants who are necessarily product focused. We (and I think most independent consulting companies) are business focused. It makes a huge difference in the type of work you’ll get.

SES - Issues In Analytics 2007-09-01 17:09:00 n the beginning of the session, Alex Bennert, reveals that she has changed the name of the panel from, 'Analyzing the Analytics
Partners' to 'Issues

They have been a long time in the making (you can imagine what happens when practitioners, consultants, vendors, industry thought leaders all come together!!), and were announced at the Search Engine Strategies (SES) show in San Jose.

Google Analytics in AIR 2007-09-25 15:35:00 This unofficial AIR version of Google
Analytics
delivers the functionality of browser-based Google Analytics
but with greater usability and a richer experience. If you haven’t heard of AIR (once named “Apollo”), it’s a platform developed by Adobe that enables web developers to deploy their web services outside of the browser so they function more like traditional applications. This is the first AIR program that I have tested that really gets me excited about the platform. As a beta program, it’s not perfect (I ran into a few errors), but overall it has been executed very well. It’s also nice to see such a full-functional program developed using someone else’s API (in this case, Google’s).

Key Words For Donors To Find You On The Web 2007-09-11 19:53:00 Remember that your goal is the answer to the question: What do you want people to do on your site? If you're using GoogleAnalytics goals, you've already thought through some of this. Do you want them to read content, download a screen saver, sign an online petition, sign up for more information, sign up to volunteer, make a donation, or something else? The important thing is that is actionable.
