Immigration - Good or bad for the economy? 2007-07-20 12:01:45 Per year, $10.5 million dollars are spent on illegal aliens alone, just in California! They are able to obtain health care and education when they have absolutely no money or insurance; meanwhile, I can’t even get a couple of stitches without insurance as well as filling out a stack of paperwork. This is certainly not fair, but are they really the cause of our horrible employment rates and bad economy
? What about crime? I’m starting to think that it has nothing to do with them specifically.
They are taking advantage of the system, they are seeking opportunity and trying to better their living conditions. You can’t blame them for that. If I could move to Canada and leech free health care, welfare etc… then I certainly would (as a last resort). Hell, some of these aliens actually pay taxes. I applaud them for all of that. Except of course when they steal social security numbers, they can actually pay almost no taxes and then get back thousands in tax returns. The
Employment - I don’t want a job. 2007-07-18 11:06:37 It’s rather disappointing to see how everyone is so strongly convinced that the only way to make a living is to work a full time job, with a boss and co-workers. For example, in college they said to me, “Where do you plan to work when you get out of school?” When I mention anything about self employment they look rather confused and go on the assumption that it’s temporary and I will “still be seeking employment.” Same goes for friends and family, who have only worked full time jobs their entire lives. The interesting thing is that almost all of the people I meet hate their jobs and usually don’t work at a single place for more than 5 years at a time- yet working for your self is considered “high risk” in comparison to starting a business or being an entrepreneur.
I had this same outlook on earning a living up until around the middle of college. At this time I started looking in to self-help programs and reading up on some entrepreneur sites. I eventually stumbled upo
Why not? - Some absurd ideas. 2007-07-13 23:36:04 I thought I would share some weird ideas
I have been kicking around. Some abstract thoughts and “what if” scenarios that are rather funny but still make you think. Some of these are absurd
, but have been floating in the back of my pool of brainy mush for a long while and I need to get them down in writing.

Most people have a plan for when they die, such as being cremated and having their ashes dumped in to some river or off of some cliff or mountain. Some people want to be buried with their favorite object, like an instrument or a picture of their hamster. There is a big problem with all of these, they are neither creative nor smart! It is in our nature to survive, why not keep it going after you die? When I die, I want my body to be cryogenized and launched in to space. I want to it be launched in to some random direction, preferably away from the sun. This leaves a chance, an infinitesimal chance, that I may be captured by some intelligent alien life form. They co
God Delusion – Why the labels don’t work. 2007-07-12 18:29:06 Before I start, I must note that this article is not about Dawkin’s book “The God Delusion
.” I am using this title to describe a delusion of the meaning of the word “God.” I have read the book and it has inspired some thoughts, but for the sake of argument, I am in no way defending or attacking the content of the book. I don’t even have a concrete label for my own beliefs, and this article explains why. I am attacking the system we use to label each other, our religious identities. I would also like to note that I am completely open minded about this subject, feel free to discuss this in the forums. I don’t want to propose any of this as fact, but simply explain my impression of the subject and see what others think. When it comes to religion, I am always willing to learn everyone’s opinions.
If someone where to ask you, “What is a god?” what would you say? An omnipotent supernatural creator of the universe? A more intelligent alien life form that cr
America - It’s a couple of continents. 2007-07-11 00:31:16 “I don’t get why so many countries hate America
, this is the greatest country in the world!” Bob says as he takes a huge bite out of his Juicy, Grade-A, All American, Classic Bacon Double Cheeseburger.
“Must be Bush”, Jack replies.
“Yeah, definitely Bush”, Bob says.
If all of that looks perfectly fine to you, we have some stuff to work on. I have seen countless people like this, these so called “patriots”, so ignorant of so many things and refuse to take the blame for the rest of the world hating them. If you laughed, or found the irony, congratulations- you’re on your way to a new life. I’ll point out the flaws in the skit above, and maybe throw in some more.

Communism - Picking up the signs in the U.S. 2007-07-26 01:22:57 The idea of the U.S. becoming a communist nation might not come as news to you, but I still feel it is worth writing about. Before I started researching and seeking opinions on communism in the United States, I noticed some characteristics that lead me to such interests. Now communism isn’t necessarily a bad system as long as it’s properly ran, but is the U.S. headed down the right side of the road?

Humor - Funny vs Offensive 2007-07-29 08:22:12 I have lurked around various Internet communities for a few years now, all with their own special atmosphere. Some people find some of their humor offensive while others may find it highly amusing. The differences between some of their cultures are amazing. After experiencing one type of humor, you may go to another community and it might not be funny at all. Why is this? Do certain communities distort our perspective on reality or are they so funny that normal humor doesn’t seem funny anymore? Kind of like that episode of South Park with the family of “butt heads” and Cartman hit his “high point” and nothing was funny anymore.
Due to certain community rules, I can’t mention the site that I go to for my daily humor fix, but some things that I find amusing from them are things that most other communities would find extremely offensive; for example, one of the topics discussed were various things that Michael J. Fox can do because of his Parkinson&rsqu Read more:Humor

Crazy tips for overcoming writer’s block. 2007-08-04 14:06:20 I have compiled a short list of tips that I use to overcome writer’s block
. I tried to write down only the unique ones, since there are tons of tips all over the web and most of them are the same. Some of these might not work for you, but it couldn’t hurt to try them out; be sure to let me know how it works out.
Write for yourself.
Instead of worrying about what your readers want, grammar mistakes, and sentence flow, write only for yourself. Write down your ideas exactly how you think them. Do the editing after you finish your entire document. Editing as you go will likely be distracting and might actually cause you to forget some of the content you planned on writing. Get it all down on paper first, then worry about the impression it gives off.
Bring it up for discussion.
If you are writing short articles, like a blog post or short story, try taking the overall topic and posting it in some forums, or even bringing it up with some friends. Don’t tell them you are writ Read more:Crazy
Yet Another Identity Theft Article 2007-08-08 14:10:16 Are there really that many identity theft articles? Well, yes, but instead of taking the advice, people still seem to just awe at the statistics then brush it off like “oh, that will never happen to me“. Perhaps it’s just laziness or people are still ignorant to the actual problems we face. You can actually do things to protect you, believe it or not, and the criminals are human, just like you- they aren’t some computer hacking cyborg that takes identities at random. If you think like them, you can help protect yourself.
The statistics are outrageous for the amount of money that has been taken through identity theft, social engineering, and hacking/phishing. A good source for some statistics is About.com : Identity Theft. And most of those cases could have been prevented if people took a little time to protect themselves and if companies would enforce better security procedures. The security problems are not because of the tools, but because of the people. For Read more:Article

Casual Science 2007-08-12 13:51:39 As a few of you know, I have been working on a brand new site (casualscience.net) about life advice and how you can apply the scientific method to your everyday life, how to make smart decisions, and develop yourself. It is less of a site about me, as that is what smalltownbigshot.com is for. I have launched it as of yesterday and I must say, it will be a lot of fun to see what I can do with it.
At the moment, I am the only writer for CasualScience
. I don’t mind this, but I would love to open it up to other people. I certainly don’t know everything there is to know about life, so if other people are willing to submit articles or stories, that would help out immensely. I plan to write nice lengthy articles for the site and do some extensive research, but I will not abandon smalltownbigshot.com, as it’s so successful and I am having a lot of fun with it.

Law of Attraction Myths 2007-08-17 22:51:18 If you keep up at all with self-development communities, especially financial development, you are probably familar with the Law of Attraction
or atleast you might have heard of it. For those who don’t know, the Law of Attraction is a new age theory that basically says “you get what you think about”. It goes on the idea that your feelings, ideas, words, and actions influence the events that happen in your life and presumably control your destiny. This has gotten a lot of positive attention from spiritual or religious people; in turn, it has gotten much negative attention from more logical or rational people, or science communities at least. Let us examine why.
I am a more logical or rational person, I always have been, and I keep involved in science communities constantly; nevertheless, I spend a large amount of my time in spiritual and self-development communities as well, as I find them very helpful for entrepreneurship and thinking outside the box when it comes to Read more:Myths
A Very Abstract Philosophy on Life 2007-08-22 01:06:12 From birth to death, society guides us down the path of life. We are told that life is wonderful and we have much to experience. We set goals, we obtain knowledge, we embrace life, and we continue to learn throughout our lives. We gather knowledge every day of our lives, we collect things, experiences, information- until the end, as though we were going to cash those in or spend our memories somewhere for some material object. We lay on our death bed flipping through our metaphorical scrapbook of life, looking back at all of the wonderful and terrible encounters. We pass our collections on to future generations, so that they too can embrace what we have experienced.
What is at the end of the path? Why do we bother to learn and explore the world simply to obtain knowledge? We go on vacations to foreign countries to obtain knowledge of different cultures, be it art, history, or experience. We have interests in various things to learn more about them and embrace our fascinations. We get j Read more:Abstract

Deep Thought Carnival 1 2007-09-02 11:53:48 I am amazed at the amount of entries for this carnival, it was quite a big turnout. Perhaps I may shorten the submission deadline next time to two weeks instead of four or make a more specific topic; nonetheless, it was full of very good posts.
The topic was Philosophy and Religion in general, so many posts were accepted (that met requirements). There are posts ranging from fictional stories to relationship advice to deep religious thoughts- it’s all here. Thanks to those who submitted and thanks to those who will take a minute to check out these posts!

Life is a Pyramid Scheme 2007-09-21 16:12:57 Here is a free-write I wrote recently when reading about ethics in society. I don’t normally write in this style. I would describe it as a spaghetti tutorial to the philosophy of life and politics, but that would be too long of a title, so I went with what life reminds me of the most- a pyramid scheme. This post does not intend to have anything to do with current events or current politics directly, even though it certainly applies. Well, enjoy!
Our standards, created by our greed, surpass the ability to produce those standards; in other words, we all have standards of living, but these standards, or expectations, are almost always greater than what we actually require; therefore, we are greedy. Those who are less fortunate, who live in poverty, still desire that which is greater than what they require. It is human nature to be greedy, because we can, and we all want more of what is good.

Contest 1 - Winner 2007-09-15 11:09:19 The first contest has ended. I am surprised at how successful this has become. I also expected more entries than votes, as people usually just want the prize, but I was wrong. There were lots of votes and everyone got voted. I personally enjoyed all of the stories as did others, as the results were very close. So I’m sorry that not everyone could be winners.

There will be more contests in the future so keep updated. I thank everyone for playing and to try again next time for a better prize and perhaps an easier contest; also, there may be multiple winners. Read more:Contest
“What is ‘real’? How do you define ‘real’?” 2007-09-11 20:06:10 Do you ever feel like your life is a big computer program? Perhaps you are one of the Sims and you and your surroundings are being controlled. Perhaps we are in a Matrix like world where everything is all part of a complex simulation. Personally, I don’t know about the Matrix or the Sims, but I like to think that other people are not conscious like me, or at least aren’t to the same level. I sometimes think that my world is created in my mind.
Maybe I just have these thoughts to avoid the thought of a boring, meaningless reality. I don’t see a problem with this idea though; in fact, by taking a subjective approach at reality, I find it a lot easier to cope with changes, take risks, and I am somewhat fearless when it comes to certain things that used to scare me, like relationships, public speaking, and job interviews. I prefer to avoid people, but if I have to do these things, it’s not a big deal. In public speaking for example, I believe that if something happe Read more:ldquo

Eye of the Storm 2007-09-06 15:26:26 Much attention has been given lately to the possibility of a third world war. With the escalating conflict in Iraq, Blackwater mercenaries, suicide bombers, riots and protests, North Korea’s inane dictator, South American gangs, the Israel/Iran/U.S. “alliance”, the Red Mafia and identity theft, Halliburton and all Dick’s dicking around, it seems to me that we have gotten ourselves in to something that we won’t be able to get out of, and the list goes on.
By “we” I am talking about the United States. Other countries are certainly suffering with their own conflicts, as we all know the world is in a state of chaos, but the U.S. (being the police state that it is) has been feeding the fire more than anyone else and is, therefore, becoming a primary target. The United States is hated on a pretty high level by other countries and even the U.S. citizens themselves, and anyone who disagrees needs to actually listen to the people who do hate the U.S. an Read more:Storm
A Headache on True Randomness 2007-10-05 16:21:26 After studying a large variety of science topics, I have always been drawn to a specific question that has never been answered for me. No matter how much research I do, I can’t find the answer. I guess that could be because I’m not really looking for a simple statement, but rather a rational explanation or even proof; however, this post will be geared more towards my own personal theory based on the fact that my question has not been satisfyingly answered. It is however, still open in case anyone does have a decent answer.
I must know whether true randomness exists, as I have not found any satisfying answers. Should I find a satisfying answer, I feel that would unlock a huge amount of theories and beliefs in my life. So obviously I will not be easily satisfied. Until then, I will stick to being satisfied by my own theories, which also happen to be rather chaotic and depressing; nevertheless, they excite me. If you are interested, read on. (more…) Read more:Headache
What now sheeple? And some science stuff. 2007-10-03 21:34:16 Just so you all know, I haven’t died or abandoned the site. I have been busy with finals. The final finals! That’s right, I am done with college and I am excited! I now have a degree in Computer Networking and Technology. Now, I may go get some kind of arts degree too.
I don’t plan to be a slave for some monopolized IT organization, nor do I care to be a successful network administrator with a six figure income, but I am excited and proud that I have completed something. On that note, I would like to know what I should do next. I’d like to combine writing, philosophy, science, and computers.
I must find a job, at least until entrepreneurship kicks in and I start getting some income on my own, so that I can pay back student loans (about 20 grand). I don’t have a problem with this, but I want to make sure I get a job that I really enjoy, is ethical and pays well for little effort (because I am lazy beyond belief). I’d like to hear from you guys what yo Read more:stuff
Advice Network Looks Promising 2007-10-22 15:45:59 I found an interesting site that I thought you all would be interested in, especially those of the Pavlina community. It’s called “Advice Network”, which is a little bit like what I wanted “Casual Science” to be like, but this looks a little better (and a better layout >:P). Anyway, apparently they will have advice articles that the community writes. In return you get to promote your site or business.
They are hosting a writing contest for their grand opening and I think you all should go check it out and maybe enter. The winner gets a free MacBook laptop and just for entering you get a 4 month listing on their site. I might enter it myself.
Anyway, sorry for the lack of updates. Things are a little crazy and stressful around here but I’ll make a nice long post once things settle down. Go check out that site!

My Take On World Peace 2007-10-27 03:08:00 World Peace
? Ya ya, we’ve heard it all before. Well here’s my take on it- just read it.
Maybe someone can explain this to me. When an individual is asked about a political view or some opinion on ethics, most educated people seems to be somewhat rational about it. Whether we agree with them or not, it is apparent that they have thought over the topic and have formed a strong opinion or solution to the matter; for example, most of us have pretty strong opinions about abortion, civil rights, racism, religion, and conspiracies. On the other hand, collectively, our reasons for major decisions are childish and ignorant. I shall explain what I mean in this jumbled spaghetti format.

My Take On Feminism 2007-11-05 23:07:17 Naturally, I will choose the independent stance on most issues. Most of the time, it’s smart and safe to be in a position that is not bias; unfortunately, I look at feminism similar to how I look at religion, I am harsh and sometimes offensive. I have strong views but I still hold an independent stance. It really depends on the context of the feminism though. When dealing with insane feminist extremists, I am much more hostile and offensive. Think of me as a militant agnostic, but for feminism. That being said, I will explain how I view feminism and hopefully you will agree with some of my points and get offended by others.
First, there are multiple levels of feminism for multiple types of the feminist views. I support most views and oppose many others. There are the radical feminists, true feminists, independents, and anti-feminists. I fall somewhere between “true feminist” and “independent”… on good days.
When I think of a radical extremist femin Read more:Feminism
My Take On Ron Paul 2007-11-13 06:52:41 I am all in favor of Ron Paul
. I support his views and he is a very intelligent man. I feel he is truly honest, which I rarely feel about any candidate. He is what we need to change the country and even the world. But I honestly don’t think he stands a chance in the upcoming election. I will explain my impression of our government, how they tie in to the elections, and why I feel that Ron Paul will not be elected. These are my own views and might differ from yours in some way, which is a good thing. So feel free to comment and share your ideas or criticism. Just know that it’s all personal opinion.
We live in a society where trust in our media is necessary for the government to function as intended. If you cannot trust presidential candidates in their campaigns, which are mostly delivered through television and the Internet, you have no justification for voting. People will go with the candidate that they feel is being honest and can share similar views. Those who do not vo
Rain and the Reverse Funnel System 2007-11-16 15:40:52 Perhaps I need some kind of professional psychological evaluation, but I honestly think someone is purposely messing with the Oregon weather. I have never lived in a place where I literally get pissed off at the weather itself. One minute it’s freezing cold and raining, then literally over the course of ten seconds, it will be hot and sunny.
The sun shines in my face and I almost have a seizure of anger and frustration. I say to myself, “AHRGG FFHFYFH FGFGGRGR” and slam the curtains shut. A little bit later, the sun hides and it proceeds to rain.

The Value of Art… or Garbage. 2007-11-24 13:44:51 Why does garbage sell so well? I’m talking about really crappy paintings and other art that goes for thousands or even millions of dollars. This is a rhetorical question of course, as I will give my own answer in a minute. Some might say that a piece is worth what the buyer is willing to pay or maybe it’s worth more if you are famous or have built up credibility. I don’t believe this to be entirely true, at least it shouldn’t be.
The value of a painting should be based on the talent of the person, the technique, and the time, instead of their popularity. I can understand how one would pay a good amount for a painting because it makes them feel good or reminds them of something/someone, but would you really pay over $100 million because it makes you feel good? Even if you have butt loads of cash, if you pay $100 million for a dried up piece of canvas, you suck.
