Link Between Childhood ADD & ADHD and Addiction 2007-07-10 12:16:04 Over the past couple of years, the link between childhood ADD and ADHD and addiction later in life has been well documented. But, the research has also caused some confusion among parents who have resisted medicating their children for these disorders for fear that this will lead to a chemical dependency problem later.
What some parents have failed to realize is that undiagnosed and untreated ADD and ADHD have the highest rates of addiction for these disorders. In A Mother’s Diary, Barbara Mulloy-Robbins M.C., M.S.C., talks about her own personal experience raising two sons with ADHD and their chemical dependency issues later.
Robbins, like many other researchers conclude that early diagnosis and treatment of these disorders offers the best prognosis for avoiding addiction problems later in life.

Tutti Fruiti Cocaine Trend Geared Towards Youth 2007-06-29 10:03:35 As if the allure for cocaine isn’t bad enough, now illicit drug makers have taken the phrase “nose candy” literally and flavored cocaine like real candy. According to the Sacramento Bee in Northern California, six people were recently arrested with three pounds of cocaine flavored to taste like strawberries and coconuts.
According to DEA officials, this is a marketing tool to attract younger customers for the drug dealers. With this disturbing trend, one has to wonder what the next trend will be and if it will include such items as cocaine lollipops, cocaine ice cream cones and cocaine cotton candy?

Cracks About Crack Get TV Sitcom in Hot Water 2007-06-21 16:37:16 TBS TV show Tyler Perry’s House of Payne first aired a couple of weeks ago to record ratings for the network. But, what has gotten some people riled up is that the main characters have made some cracks about crack cocaine, accompanied by laugh track that many have found offensive.
With over 5 million viewers for each of the first two episodes, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne has seen a gain in acceptance as well from those who like sitcoms to push the envelop of social commentary. Crack slapstick has never been tried before on a family show and these crack wisecracks may not be so wise in the coming weeks if viewers and advertisers start to pull out.
It remains to be seen how heavily or lightly Payne will tread on this subject as stepping over the line may just cause the show a world of hurt when it comes to ratings.
Parenting Tips to Prevent Drug Addiction in Children 2007-06-12 15:36:24 An article on the Health24 site talks about parenting tips to help prevent drug addiction in their children as they grow older. Many drug addicts have been predestined to drug abuse since childhood, so there are techniques parents can use to help prevent problems later.
Label behavior instead of the identity of children is one tip. According to the article, labeling the children themselves as somehow bad or inadequate damages self esteem and can cause people to turn to drugs later to fill the void or block out negative self-image thoughts.
Encouraging kids to feel and express their feelings is a wonderful tool that will promote health in children and healthy adults later on. Other tips are to set boundaries and promote self-esteem in children. Each of these techniques will have a positive impact on children in the home and will be something that will help them later in life as well.

What If Fictive Thoughts Play a Role in Addiction? 2007-05-17 14:15:02 What if fictive thoughts were to play a role in addiction asks researchers at Baylor College of Medicine. Fictive thoughts, or fictive learning uses “what if” scenarios on subjects to see “what might have been” and their emotional responses to these questions and fictional situations.
The study used MRI technology to detect changes in the brain in accordance to stimuli presented in the “what if” scenarios. Real world examples of stock market crashes, gambling and other scenarios are given subjects along with choices on how to react.
The studies measures emotional regret for choices taken and choices not taken and have tied these fictive learning experiences into the role of choices in addiction.
Mobile Meth Labs Add Complexity to Drug Enforcement 2007-05-08 12:03:21 As if traditional meth labs aren’t bad enough, where criminals cook a combination of over-the-counter and acquired hazardous materials to feed the addicts’ need, now these same criminals are evading police in mobile meth labs. When meth labs are housed in a home or apartment, there is the inherent danger of explosion from chemical reactions and fire used to produce the drugs.
Illegal drug makers, though, have been a sitting target fearing police intervention at any moment. Static meth labs have also given government officials, motel owners and other landlords the added obligation of sending out the HAZMAT team to cleanup the hazardous chemicals whenever a meth lab is busted.
But, now the methamphetamine makers have taken to the streets in groves in order to evade detection by police, creating mobile meth labs in cars, vans, trucks and RV’s. According to reports in 2002, at least 20-percent of the meth labs were then mobile. Recent reports state that this number is now over 30-per Read more:Mobile

How to Make Meth 2007-08-31 09:56:46 How to make meth is one of the more popular searches on the Internet concerning illicit drugs. Two keyword research tools say that between 207 and 268 people a day are searching for information on how to make meth.
This is no surprise given the power of the World Wide Web. What is surprising, however is that someone would want to start a drug addiction outside of a social situation and peer pressure.
When one searches how to make meth online the presumption is that they have either lost their supply line and want to do it on their own or are curious and want to experiment by starting a habit from scratch.
If you have come to this page looking for information on how to make meth, then its time to seek out a drug treatment program to get your life in order. How to make meth is not as important as “how to get my life back under control.”

Hitting Rock Bottom Not Necessary to Treat Addiction 2007-09-14 15:59:53 One of the long-standing myths about recovering from drug and alcohol addiction is that one has to hit rock bottom first. According to Medical University of South Carolina psychiatry professor, Dr. Kathleen Brady, “Addicts and alcoholics are more likely to recover if they still have a job, if they still have a spouse, if their family still lets them in the door.”
Brady says that willpower and morality has nothing to do with the recovery process. She also states that this country tends to criminalize addiction by sending people to prison for taking illicit substances rather than putting them in rehab.
Some of this has changed in the last couple of years, thanks to new technology. Because of the advent of ankle bracelets that monitor drug and alcohol use, this has kept many people in their homes and jobs rather than in prison. More states and counties, however, need to avail themselves of this new technology in order to give addicts the best chances of recovery. Read more:Hitting

and Drug Addiction RecoveryMonth
. It has been estimated that alcohol abuse and drug addiction cost U. S. taxpayers $294 billion every year.

The purpose of the proclamation of September as a month of substance abuse recovery is to raise awareness for the seriousness of the disease and the impact that it not only has on the individuals, but their families, friends, coworkers and society at large, as well.
Gene Linked to Alcohol Addiction 2007-09-27 12:43:13 Results of a study published in Alcohol
ism: Clinical & Experimental Research have concluded that a specific gene, previously unidentified may also be responsible for alcohol addiction and other addictive behavior. Author of the study, Danielle Dick, has stated that the gene named ankyrin repeat and kinase domain containing 1 (ANKK1) is one of the genes responsible for making people vulnerable to addiction.
Previous research has centered around the neighboring gene, DRD2. The research on the DRD2 gene has had serious limitations, however, and the new research on the ANKK1 gene sheds light on these limitations. By implicating another gene is the same region, researchers now believe that several genes in the same phenotype are involved.
Migraine Pill May Help Curb Alcohol Addiction 2007-10-11 19:54:38 An anticonvulsant drug used routinely for migraines and seizures may help alcoholics taper off their alcohol addictions without having to go through detoxification. A recent study published in Wednesday’s journal of the American Medical Association, has shown that the drug Topamax helped 15 percent of alcoholics at the height of their drinking binges stop drinking altogether for 7 weeks.
The rest of the group, given the anticonvulsant drug cut their drinking in roughly half of what it had been prior to the study. All participants were encouraged to stop drinking altogether. The 14-week trial is good news for some candidates with alcohol addictions as they may opt to be treated by their family doctor, while in their own community rather than leaving jobs and family for a trip to a rehab facility. Addiction Costs London $243 Million Per Year 2007-10-18 12:13:24 It’s been estimated that addiction costs London $243 million per year and some of this cost is due to the 1,500 homeless people, of which 40-percent are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction and mental illness. For this population only 360 shelter beds are available on any given night.
But, addiction isn’t confined to the homeless population as it cuts across all ethnic and socio-economic barriers from poor to middle class to upper class.
