Full-Time SEO 2007-07-21 17:58:56 I’ve officially put in my first two weeks as a full time SEO
specialist. Up until this point, search engine optimization had just been a hobby but after leaving my job at a software company, I received an offer to join the team at OrangeSoda.com which has turned out to be a great move. And not just because I get to wear jeans everyday like my wife thinks. It’s great to finally have a job that interests you and work with a sharp group of guys that know what they are doing and work hard to be successful. The company is still very young but proving to do very well so I am very excited to see the progress and changes we can make over the next few years in the field of Internet marketing.

Get Linked In 2007-07-18 20:36:28 I’m not a huge online social networking type of guy but the one social networking site where I’ve created a profile and actually intend to keep using it is LinkedIn.com. Linked In is kind of like MySpace but for grown ups. It’s kind of like Facebook but geared towards work and professionals instead of college. One of the great parts about it is that you can’t really get spammed with lots of friend requests or “connections” as LinkedIn calls them because the idea of the site is you actually have to know the person to make that connection. Either you have to have worked at the same place, gone to school together or at least know their email address. If you haven’t checked it out, give it a try. I’ve added a link to my LinkedIn profile over in my sidear.

Verizon vs AT&T 2007-07-02 12:57:56 I was in the market for a new cell phone and service provider over the weekend and I had narrowed my options down to Verizon
or Cingular AT&T. I’ve had both services in the past and haven’t really had any complaints about either. I was looking for a pretty basic plan, nothing too fancy. I am a little bit of a gadget junkie so a cool phone was mildly important. Here’s what I found.
AT&T
Plans - Plans in my range were very similar to Verizon, no difference there
Phones - Had their ups and downs, much larger selection online. I came in the day after the iPhone release and they were obviously sold out. I wasn’t looking to spend quite that much but after playing with the model in the store, I probably would’ve caved if one was in stock.
Customer Service - CRAP. I go to the same AT&T store every time and its always busy so there was no surprise there. I meandered (yes, meandered) around the store for at least 15 minutes but it was so busy,
I Own Google 2007-06-29 18:02:40 That’s right…BryanPhelps.com is finally ranking #1 on Google
for [Bryan Phelps]. It’s been a long time coming and Brian Phelps (radio disc jokcey) and his Wikipedia page can EAT IT! I feel that I definitely deserve this number one ranking and I appreciate Google finally acknowledging that I am the most import Bryan OR Brian Phelps on the Internet. Now let’s just see how long it stays….

Agloco - Making Money Online 2007-06-28 16:21:02 There is a fairly new website around claiming that you can make money online by surfing the web. Which may or may not be true. The idea behind Agloco has been done before and some people have paid money. However, as far as I know, nobody has actually received any money from Agloco yet. I recently installed their toolbar to test it out. I’ve put in my maximum limit of 5 hours surfing time and recruited a few people. I can’t imagine the payouts will be much (if any) but I figured I had nothing to lose. You run the toolbar for 5 hours then close it. Is Agloco a scam?

Google Image Labeler 2007-06-13 15:12:01 I was looking around Webmaster Central today because Google
announced some changes and found something new to me but not what they mentioned in their announcement. There was a check box to enable enhanced image search. I had actually never heard of it and while trying to discover more about it I found Google ImageLabeler
. It’s an interesting little tool Google is using to improve the quality of its image search results. Google shows you an image and you and another anonymous person type in words that describe the picture and you are awarded points when your answers match. Google then can be pretty sure that whatever word you and the anonymous person use is a pretty accurate description of what the picture is. It’s a great idea for them to improve their search results and its turning out to be pretty addicting for me as well.

SEO News 2007-05-29 15:12:59 I’ve just recently (last couple months) started using Google reader to subscribe to all my RSS feeds. I’ve compiled a pretty decent list of blogs and news sites that track SEO
news as well as some other things. Here’s some of the daily reads:
Alex McArthur - Utah based SEO expert
Copyblogger - Awesome info about content
Graywolf - One of the little edgier SEO experts out there
Matt Cutts - Google SEO engineer
Search Engine Land - FREQUENT industry updates
SEOBook.com - Aaron Wall’s SEO blog
SEOMoz - Love their back-to-basics type of blogs
TropicalSEO - Don’t remember how I found this one but good info
Any good ones I’m leaving out?

New Look 2007-05-23 09:21:07 I had my previous WP theme for a few months so I thought it was time to change it up a little. The last one was a little too first-time-wordpress-user-ish. I think this new theme is pretty clean and straight forward. Enjoy.

Meebo Review 2007-05-10 10:01:03 If you use multiple messengers on a regular basis, Meebo
is a necessity. Meebo lets you log in to multiple messengers with one log in ID and password. Plus, it’s all run through your Internet browser so you don’t have 3 different messengers taking up resources on your computer. You lose some of the little perks of messenger options but it is still worth it. One of my favorite features is you aren’t prompted to update your version of messenger every other day. Plus, you can log into your accounts almost anywhere you can get an Internet connection. You don’t have to worry about having the messenger programs installed. The only real issue I’ve run into is I’ve seen a few of my contacts just disappear. It’s kind of weird and I’m not sure if it’s something I’m causing or not. As soon as that person IM’s me, I can easily re-add them. Meebo definitely gets 2 thumbs up from this guy.

#1 - Utah SEO 2007-08-07 11:00:02 Over the last couple of weeks I have bounced around between #1 and #2 for the Google search [Utah SEO
], much to the astonishment of Alex McArthur who promised me it was just a fluke and wouldn’t last for more than 48 hours. I can’t say I completely disagree with him since I haven’t made much of an attempt to rank for this keyword. It makes me realize that I have much to learn about the ways of Google. There are many Utah SEO firms that optimize for this keyword and by looking at the stats, should rank higher. We’ll see how long it lasts…easy come, easy go.
I’ve included a screenshot for proof in case I’m gone tomorrow (and to further confuse Alex):

Investment Opportunity of a Lifetime 2007-09-12 16:16:52 All aboard…my money train is finally arriving. And I’m not talking about the 1995 thriller starring Wesley Snipes, J-Lo and Woody Harrelson. How does potentially limitless returns on a minimal investment sound? Well after a shocking revelation from not one but TWO fortune cookies I had at a single sitting with my wife at Panda Express, I realized that my time has come. And who is driving this money train? None other than Conductor Dan from Today Was Awesome.
If you review this amazing business opportunity, you’ll see that Dan received a fortune cookie stating that he will be traveling and coming into a fortune. Here’s where the story picks up…the following are pictures of the fortunes I received… on the same day. Coincidence? I call it fate.
****Images have been cropped to protect the ugly.
So when I was confronted by Dan and invited to buy some shares of his potential fortune, I knew the fortune cookie never lied and bought big.

Utah SEO Dark Lord? 2007-09-11 00:07:54 Well, I’ve dropped considerably in the Utah SEO
keyword race so I’ve found a new niche. I’m going for “Utah SEO Dark Lord”. Apparently this is the technical term for a good SEO specialist. Here’s my proof of qualifications:
SEO Master - 97%Are you an SEO Expert?
This was a new SEO quiz available on SEOMoz.org. It’s a fun little quiz to try out and apparently a very successful link building tool as their link is included in this neat-o badge you get at the end.

Grandcentral Invites 2007-09-07 16:52:47 I have a bunch of invites for Google’s recently acquired Grandcentral. If you’re not familiar with this cool little service, you can learn more about it. It has many purposes but its definitely a great way to screen calls. Grandcentral gives you a new local number, you log in and tell it where you want those calls forwarded to, you can pick your cell phone, home phone, work phone or all of the above. Or you can have it forwarded nowhere and use it as another voicemail box. Which is pretty cool because then you can log in and listen to your voicemails through your computer. You can also set up options for specific callers and send unwanted calls straight to a prerecorded message. So basically there are tons of features and right now, its not available to the public. so if you’d like an invitation to use, it send me a note.

Widgetbucks is Money 2007-10-11 17:35:11 I’ve recently began some side projects to explore other revenue incomes and have had moderate success. It’s been okay but not amazing. One new company called Widgetbucks has been awesome though. It has been outperforming many other popular ad networks for me including the ever popular Google Adsense. There are 2 possible explanations:
It’s truly paying more per click than adsense.
My adsense clicks are substantially lower than most publishers so what I think are high earnings with Widgetbucks are just average earnings for publishers who are better than me.
Either way, if Widgetbucks continues as it is, I will be much happier with this little side endeavor. If you’d like to try it, click the link below. Yes, it is an affiliate link and I will make money off of you. It’s okay though..would you rather Widgetbucks keep all the money or help out your good friend, Bryan?

Vegas PubCon Wrap-Up 2007-12-19 16:17:33 Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to attend my first Internet Marketing conference with some co-workers from OrangeSoda. Overall, it was a blast. Lets start at the beginning…
Day 1
Wake up in Orem, Utah at 3:30 a.m. to catch our flight to Vegas
.
Arrive in Vegas, catch a cab to Circus Circus. Survived several near death experiences with the cab driver who appeared to have some serious shakes from who knows what he was on.
Unfortunately we were too early to check-in so I got to carry my backpack which contained my laptop and everything else I brought with me around the conference hall. Some of my conference-experienced co-workers were smart enough to pack their laptop and clothes separate so they were able to leave their luggage at the hotel.
Managed to somehow stay awake through several PubCon sessions. They were interesting but 3:30 a.m. is even earlier than it sounds.
Return to the luxurious Circus Circus where I can finally unpack my bag. Tried to be positive and
