Hariyali Koftas
2007-07-23 12:09:00
As we kick into the summer, its nice to use more green leafy vegetables as part of your diet. I tried eating salads for a few days, but then my heart craved for something nutritious yet appealing to my palette, and that's when I started preparing a concoction called the Hariyali Koftas. They are not only tasty, they have a high fibre content, high protein, vitamin A and calcium, and the dish blends perfectly well with bread or rice...so here's presenting, the hariyali koftas...Ingredients: Spinach (2-3 cups for the gravy), cumin seeds, oil, turmeric, salt, red pepper, garam masala, ginger-garlic paste, onions(finely chopped or grated), tomato puree(3 tbsp), whipped cream,(3 tbsp), chopped corianderFor the koftas - potatoes-4-5, boiled and mashed, grated paneer(cottage cheese)-2 tsp, grated cheese(2 tbsp), salt, garam masala powder, lemon juice(2 tsp), half-cup assorted dry fruits-cashews,almonds and raisins, chopped finely, all-purpose flourMethod: mash the potatoes for the koftas a

Barbecues - How they originated and why are they tied to July 4th?
2007-07-20 18:43:00
Though Americans grab any available opprtunity to turn on their BBQ grills and start grilling, the act has been tied to July 4th since a long time now, and most people keep following the tradition, without realising why....So, here's what I discovered when my curiosity got the better of me and I set out on a mission to find the history behind bbq's....North-easterners are the biggest barbecuers in the nation, followed by those in the North Central, Southern and then Western parts of the country. However, it turns out that Barbecues have been a White House tradition since the times of Mr. Thomas Jefferson. What started as a mere celebration tactic by the president, later turned into a symbol associated with any national holiday. Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, hosted the first bbq at the White House that featured Texas-style barbecued ribs. Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter hosted a “pig pickin’” for about 500 guests including foreign visitors, while Ronald an

Who will die next? Is it Harry this time?
2007-07-20 13:42:00
ok guys and gals, as the clock ticks down to the herald of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I am waiting in anticipation, just as millions of Harry's fans out there in the world to know how this wonderful magical saga ends..... Everyone knows by now that one of the main characters is going to die....Who shall it be, after Cedric and Prof. Dumbledore...Is it Hagrid, Snape or one of the 3 main heart-throbs???I don't think J.K Rowling can kill Harry, 'coz either him or Voldermort dies, but she can't let evil win....Lord Voldermort HAS TO DIE!!!! Hermione is too smart and a great wizard, while Ron is the one who can't stand on his own. Will Harry's luck and Hermione's wizarding skills be enough to kill the Dark Lord and save their friends????? How will he fight the last battle without his mentor dumbledore's help and protection???I just can't wait to find out....This by far is the most sought-after book in the series, and I sure do not want to see any of my favourite characte

Gujarati Dal and Kadhhi
2007-07-23 17:15:00
I have a friend who comes from the southern part of India, and the first thing he ever asks me to cook when we meet is the gujju Kadhhi....yeah, for people who know it and have relished it tons of times, it would sound like a joke, for its probably the easiest things to make!! But I'd like to dedicate this post to my friend who savours this simple recipe the most, and also the Gujarati dal, which perhaps requires a little more skill...Kadhhi:Take 3 cups sour buttermilk and add one cup chickpea flour (besan) to this while you keep stirring continuously to avoid making any lumps. When the buttermilk and flour have blended well, heat a saucepan, add 2 tbsp ghee, some jeera seeds, methi seeds, 2 green chillies cut into small pieces and 5-6 curry leaves (limdo). When the seeds splutter, add the buttermilk mixture to it. Then add some jaggery or sugar, salt to taste, and some lemon juice if needed. Add some water if you need to make it thinner in consistency. Let the mixture boil on low fla

Avocado - Good or Bad???
2007-07-27 13:02:00
Eating a Veggie Delight at Subway is part of my staple diet, and most of the times I get tempted to add some avocado onto it, but I hold myself back thinking its a very high-calorie food....Anyways, I've heard so many positives and negatives about this interesting fruit that its hard to catgorise it as Good or Bad. I set out to explore that thin grey line and this is what I found...One medium-sized avocado contains a little more than 300 calories, most of them coming from Fats (77% Fat, 19% Carbs, 4% Proteins) This definitely sets you to say NO to frequent helpings, but there's more to this fruit than what meets the eye. Here's a detailed pros-cons list to help you decide better. The Goods:Low in CholesterolLow in SodiumHigh in Vitamins C, E and KHigh in dietery Fiber and FolatesMost of the fat is mono or poly-saturated improving ration of good vs bad HDLGood source of potassium, phosphorousActs as an anti-oxidantGreat taste and textureThe Bads:High caloric valueHigh in saturated fa

Indian-Chaat Place, Bay Area, CA
2007-07-26 18:11:00
Anyone who's spent even one day in India knows what "chaat" means....The first drops of rain would send people flocking to the chaat places, and now the craze has reached such a crescendo that be it any season or any time of the day, chaat-mania never dies!!! The mouth-watering taste of the "chutneys" (tamarind and green chilly sauces) and the mind-boggling smell of the entire concoction is sure to leave its mark on anyone, not just an indian!!So here's an ode to one such eating joint called Chaat Paradise, located in a small corner of a huge complex in mountainview. The restaurant is hardly noticeable from outside, yet it draws huge crowds during lunch and weekends simply based on the word-of-mouth of its delighted and satisfied patrons like me. Its menu is pretty extensive with a large variety of appetizers and chaat dishes, and you'd be happy to pick out any one of them from the list. but my favourites are the "Hara-Bhara Sprout Bhel" and the "Dahi batata sev puri". 2007-07-26 13:09:00
Hi Folks, as the weekend approaches, let me share with you the name of an Indian restaurant that's my family's favourite!! Its called Shiva's, located in the heart of Mountainview downtown in CA. it features a varied range of Indian delicacies from every region of the country. The first thing that catches your eye as you get out of your car is the entrance to this grand restaurant, especially if you've come here for dinner. As a courteous lady pleasantly asks you to wait as they prepare a table for you, the colourful and psychedelic lights creating an intricate pattern on the entrance floor are sure to keep you engrossed. And when you enter inside, its like "apparating" into an ethnic part of the country. The earthy and bright colours on the wall are accentuated by the matching glow lighting, and the arts and crafts on the walls, alongwith the carved wooden windows famous as "jharokhas" in India create a serene and peaceful atmosphere that is sure to lift your spirits. The menu, fil

Batata(Potato) Vada
2007-07-30 14:55:00
Though high in calories, fried food is no doubt the best-tasting snack ever, and the recipe I describe below is our favourite one. Its considered to be staple food for people in Bombay(Mumbai) and you are sure to see vendors selling them in trains, buses or roads. Wanna Quit Smoking?? Or have a Hangover?? Try 2 Bananas a Day
2007-08-02 14:01:00
The yellow-skinned fruit that can easily make you "slip" is perhaps the most under-valued of all fruits. We all know it can help in weight control, is rich in potassium and is delicious to eat. But did you know that it can help you quit smoking too?? Here's a brief write-up on the less-known medicinal properties of this fruit which I'm sure would help you some way in your life.Smoking : Bananas can help people trying to give up smoking, as the high levels of Vitamin C, A1, B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalise the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water-balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack. Beauty Mask: A banana mashed with yoghurt acts as a moisturiser and peel-off fa

Batata Poha (Rice Flakes)
2007-08-02 13:18:00
I was getting late in the morning, and there was absolutely no time to make any lavish breakfast, and with minimal ingredients at home, I resorted to make the batata poha, a tried and tested, yet never-failing snack. "Poha" is nothing else but rice flakes, and for those who are used to having rice flakes in the form of cereals for breakfast, try this indianized version which is simple, filling and highly nutritious!!Ingredients3 cups poha (rice flakes), 1 small potato-boiled and chopped, half an onion bulb-chopped finely, 4-5 curry leaves, 2 green chillies finely chopped, jeera seeds, 3 tbsp oil, spices - salt, turmeric powder, sugar and lemon juice- to taste, chopped cilantro and dried dessicated coconut to garnishMethodPlace the rice flakes in a colander and wash them with water. 2007-08-02 13:00:00
Sago, also known as tapioca, is produced from pith of Metroxylon and other palms, looks like semi-white unglazed pearls, and is a major ingredient for meals cooked during times of fasting. Its similar to rice-grains, just smaller and round, and is high is starch content, hence filling. Point Reyes national Seashore- Exploring a more pristine Camping location
2007-08-01 14:10:00
Camping season is still on in full swing, and with more and more people flocking to the famous locations, the true outdoor enthusiasts are finding it harder than ever to find a scenic yet less-crowded camping site. Thai Food- Amarin Thai, Mountainview CA
2007-08-01 12:27:00
For all my friends who might think that I am biased towards indian restaurants, here's my choice for the best thai food and culinary experience in the Bay Area. It has to be Amarin Thai in mountainview downtown, and none other could come close!!Though it has several branches at various locations, and we've visited most of them, the one on Castro beats them all...Set in the heart of the quaint and glittering downtown, its a must-visit restaurant for all asians. The best attraction for me, something other than the food, is actually the 2 seating arrangements that catch your eye as soon as you enter the place. Traditional seating for a family means all members sitting around like a group informally, chatting and enjoying the delicious food, and that's precisely what these seatings are meant for! A group of 8 of us could sit comfortably in a circular setting with our feet dangling into air, no separate chairs, but with cusions to support our backs and the circular table that jutted out

What colour does your Coffee Lid boast today?
2007-07-31 13:04:00
The daily dose of caffeine that lies on everyone's desk unnoticed has now been revolutionized!! I recently read an article in a business magazine which was titled "Coffee gets a colour correction" and it spoke about a new innovation from a Sydney-based company called Smart Lid Systems. It has come out with a new genre of coffee lids which act as "mood rings" for your caffeine. It changes colour with the temperature of your beverage, boasting a bright Red when its too hot to handle, and a calm deep and rich Mocha Brown when its just perfect!! It also shows a mottled red when the lid is not properly secured to the cup.... Wow, can you believe that???!!!Apparently, its not just "chick and cool", but an efficient safety measure too, and priced at just 5c a piece, the coffee-lovers are creating a huge demand for these not just in Australia, but in US and UK markets too. And these are not the only gadget-gizmos honouring this beverage. There are gifts like "Auto-Stirrer Coffe mugs" and temp

Tarla Dalal - The Indian Food Queen
2007-08-07 22:08:00
Continuing the trend of food celebrity discussions, we focus today on Tarla Dalal, the lady with a radiant smile on her face who can create magic with her hands. She has single-handedly reached the epitome of respect and love that is humanly achievable in India, and rules millions of hearts with her simple and extravagant recipes.Born in Pune, the newly-wed Mrs. Dalal moved to Bombay after her marriage. In 1966, she started cookery classes form her residence. Her classes become a phenomenal success with a long list of students wanting to join them. Its very well-known that every Indian girl learns to cook at an early age, and at one time, it was said that "If you want to get your daughter married, send her to Ms. Dalal's Classes". This was because students attained guaranteed cookery expertise after attending her classes. It may sound funny, but it sure depicts how this lady was gaining ground fast in the culinary field. From a tiny crowded kitchen she moved to bigger and better place

Acai Berry - The healing power coming straight from the Amazon Rainforest
2007-08-06 13:38:00
How important it is to include fruits as part of your diet is a well-known fact, and for some time now, a tiny dark purple colored fruit smaller than a grape, is creating a havoc in the health industry. I came across Acai (pronounced as a-sigh-eee) in Jamba Juice and Juice Zone, where the Acai Smoothie caught my eye. What little I learned from the girl who made my smoothie intrigued me enough to find out more about this new player in the market. Let's see what makes Oprah call the Acai Berry as her #1 SuperFood!!!Acai is very perishable and spoils within about 24 hours of being picked from the Acai Palm tree. So you can't get fresh Acai unless you live in the middle of amazon forest (which I surely hope you don't, b'coz then you wouldn't be reading my blog!) But Acai pulp can be frozen and can also be dehydrated into a powder and freeze dried. This powder can then be put into capsules to make pure Acai supplements that maintain all the nutritional properties of fresh Acai - just i

Saffron Spot - If their website doesn't catch your eye, their desserts sure will !!!
2007-08-06 12:52:00
Hi to everyone who missed me :) and also to those of you who are coming here for the first time!!I just got back from a weekend getaway with my family in Los Angeles, and I absulutely have to share with you my amazing experience at Saffron Spot!!! In April 2001, Mumbai (India) native Smita Salgaonkar started Neemo's Exotic Ice Creams in northern Orange County, naming it so after one of her daughters' nick-names. With the success of Neemo's, she also opened Saffron Spot, a stylish Indian ice cream parlor, that utilizes the valuable spice Indian spice called "Kesar", or Saffron to create tantalizing flavours. If you don't believe me, take a look at their website . Its as colourful as the desserts that will welcome you there!! And the look of the place exudes a vibrant feeling. The chairs are rounded. The eating area jutting from the walls are rounded and the purple, orange, and yellow colors are just as bright and cheerful.http://www.saffronspot.com/index.htmlIt has an exotic collecti

Shahi Paneer
2007-08-10 23:45:00
"Paneer", or cottage-cheese, is as well-known amongst Americans as Indians. The perfect place for a Day Trip -Pfeiffer Big Sur, California
2007-08-10 16:18:00
As the weekend approaches, we look forward to the beautiful summer weather, and I have a perfect place in mind to escape the heat (or enjoy the sun!) and relax in the golden solitude of mother nature. I'm talking about the Pfeiffer Big Sur State park, located 26 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1.It is believed that the name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", which translates as "the big south", and the entire coastal region between the San Francisco Bay area and the Los Angeles area comes under Big Sur Region. But the major attraction has always been the Pfeiffer beach, also a state park, or rather, the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, to be precise. It features redwood, tan oak, madrone, chaparral trees and the most beautiful McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that drops from granite cliffs into the ocean from the Overlook Trail. A panoramic view of the ocean, the beach and the fall with the rocks can be observed from the top of the several trail

Splenda - Does more harm than good???
2007-08-09 14:59:00
The first thing I was advised when I started my weight-loss regimen was to reduce my intake of calories, and the most obvious one was Sugar. We Indians have a habit of excess consumption of sugar as part of our tea/coffee, desserts and other day-to-day food. So naturally, the first thing I did was switch from Sugar to Splenda, the marketing name for Sucralose. Splenda is a combination of three ingredients--sucralose, dextrose, and maltodextrin. Dextrose is a sweetener, while Maltodextrin is a solids builder and drying agent. Neither of them is known to have any side effects, except for some allergic reactions in persons with allergies to corn or wheat. Sucralose is a chlorinated sucrose derivative used as an artificial sweetener, and with rising concerns about the use of Sachharine (found in Equal and NutraSweet), people gladly embraced Splenda as the new sugar-alternative. As its made from sugar residue, it tastes exactly like sugar, and can be used in the same proportions without co

Food Network - In need of a makeover??
2007-08-09 12:27:00
Hi everyone, the poll winner today is no doubt Food Network (photo courtesy of CityFood), the most highly watched cooking channel in USA. I myself have been a huge fan of this channel and there was a time when tuning to FN was our favourite passtime. But lately, I regret saying that it has lost its glory. Lets look at the good and bad of thisIt still has the best food shows and the most intriguing and well-planned shows with lots of information. The shows like Unwrapped, 40$ a Day, Throwdown with Bobby Flay, Good Eats provide great revelation and insight into the food industry, best culinary restaurants and chefs. This is the only cooking show which transgressed into actually being a Network in a true sense, launching its own brands, website and forums, contests, Food network weddings and Food Network Star Awards! It also provides great inspiration and a launching platform to yound and aspiring chefs or entrepreneurs with shows like Iron Chef America and numerous food and pastry comp
