Google News, what’s the Big Deal 2007-08-08 22:10:55 The blogosphere is on fire over Google
News Walling Off Content from other websites using aggregators to crawl their news. Of course Google has been doing this for years while hosting other’s news. However, I saw this as a plus for news sites since showing up in Google is always a plus.
Maybe this is the beginning of the end of aggregation. It is always suggested to write your own content, so maybe bloggers and other sites are now going to have to go back to reading articles and rewriting in their own words what they wrote.

Porn and Web 2.0 2007-08-15 21:18:39 Porn has not been left behind by web 2.0. If porn is your thing, then there are many sites out there to help with your interests. Pornotube, one of the first web 2.0 sites, allows users to share videos and images. However as anyone who has been to the site, soon realizes that most of the videos are actually trailers for the web 1.0 sites, or are short, under 2 minute, videos.
Ask any wanker and they’ll tell you that the best contenders in this category, and tops in Alexa ratings, are youporn and Megarotic. Both sites offer more than trailers and short clips. That is why they are popular. They have been able to embrace the user generated Web 2.0 sharing experience among users.
Social Networking for Adults 2007-08-13 14:25:17 Another social networking site has launched. iYomu is touting itself as Social
Networking for Grown Ups. Iyomu has the usual social networking tools, It’s free and features one gigabyte of storage for photos and documents, search tools, a personal homepage, email account, and a personality test.
It has a Flash-based personality test, called iYDNA, which uses a slide bar. It is supposed to make it easy to select a personality type. In turn you can you use it to find other people who are as perverted as you are.
They are also pushing a one million dollar challenge. The iYomu.com Challenge involves a series of puzzles and tasks to earn points. The top 10 points earners, Which will probably not be you, will be interviewed by iYomu and three grand finalists selected. Those 3 people will “explain why they should receive US$1 million and how it will change their lives”.
Hopefully the company will still be around when the winner is announced in Feb. 2008.

Major Wordpress Tool List 2007-08-17 09:31:51 I love lists. Such as top 10 Ruby Tutorials or top 10 hottest chicks of the 80’s. However talk about getting out of hand. Mashable, notorious for long lists, has added a list of 300+ Tools for Running Your WordPress Blog to their site. Don’t get me wrong, that is very cool of them. And there are tons of great tools that are going to improve my blogging lifestyle. But come on! I have work to do today! And I really want to go through this list immediately.
Mashable, you are directly responsible for me not getting anything done this morning. : )

Watch for Site Fraud 2007-08-16 09:53:13 Website sales are a big business on the internet. A high profile website with a good Google Page Rank with traffic and revenue to boot can bring in top dollar for the seller. Most sites sell for around one years revenue, however a unique site with lots of organic traffic can sell high on reputation alone.
Now it’s very tempting to jump into the established site waters. The site is already up, search engine optimization has been done, dedicated readers, and so on. However there are sharks in the water. There are sites with PR4 or 5 that kick the bucket due to the owner giving up on the site and letting the domain expire. Along comes someone else who buys the domain, throws a quick site up there and flips the site for a tidy profit. The owner discovers to their horror that they have earned a PR0 the next time Google updates it’s page rank on sites.
You have to be careful out there. Make sure you research sites you are interested in. Ask for traffic and revenue stats for the
Ruby on Rails Full Steam Ahead 2007-08-23 15:36:35 Ruby on Rails has just passed the three year mark. And, Ruby on Rails continues to impress, as popular sites such as Twitter continue to use it, as their user base grows. Ruby on Rails is evidently scalable and can take on some of the big traffic that the web can throw at a site. Plus the developer base is growing, and help is only a Ruby Wiki away from solving all but maybe your trickiest problems, which of course can be addressed in the Ruby community.
Popular Sites using Ruby on Rails:
Twitter - The microblog that has become a powerhouse in social networking.
Basecamp - One of the best project management apps out there, and personally used by me.
Shopify - Ecommerce tool that builds complete websites allowing you to sell products.
Strongspace - Secure file storage and hosting. Proves the security of Ruby on Rails.
Crazy Egg - Get a clear picture of where your visitors are coming from and what they are doing on your website.

Web Development Cheat Sheet 2007-08-27 09:53:11 I ran across the Ultimate Web DevelopmentCheat
Sheet Guide this morning on Digg. I wouldn’t say it is the ultimate guide, but it surely has all of the cheat sheets for the usual suspects. You’ll find guides to HTML, CSS and Javascript. It’s nice to have guides like these handy when you get stuck with a problem. I highly recommend printing out one of each guide and keeping it handy by your computer.

MySpace Fashion Launches 2007-08-30 15:21:07 MySpace.com/fashion has launched and they were actually able to make it look unlike the crappy design that makes up the rest of Myspace.
It looks like MySpace Fashion
features designer profiles, videos, friends of fashion, comments and other fashion related stories. The background wallpaper is actually pretty nice and the logo is fairly original.

SiteFever.com, New Site for Me 2007-09-21 18:39:09 I was pretty surprised to see sitefever.com up for sale on Digital Point, and then sell quickly for just over $1000. In a short 11 weeks the blog was fairly popular. I wish the new owner luck!
GoMotorScooter.com is my newest blog. It will be all about espousing the goodness of riding a motor scooter. Please check it out and let me know if you have any suggestions. Read more:New Site
Spiral Frog 2007-09-20 17:04:30 I’m just checking out Spiral
Frog, and I’ll tell ya, it’s pretty cool. Only 800,000 songs compared to millions on iTunes, but iTunes costs money and Spiral Frog is free. One hitch too, you have Renew Your Membership with Spiral Frog after 30 days. This involves answering questions(ads) once a month. Fair trade. Free music. I haven’t exactly gotten too in depth with the service, and I’m sure I won’t find obscure tracks and albums, but most of the popular ones like U2 are on there. It’s worth checking out for 30 days at least.
Check out Six Apart, they are connecting us together all of our separate social networks. Otherwise known as social graph, this has been discussed for a while. Nice to see it might be happening. I own socialgraphblog.com. Maybe I’ll develop it.
Favicon Generator 2007-09-17 16:23:53 Nice Favicon Generator
and Gallery for anyone looking for that type of thing. I honestly don’t think you need a cool icon for your site, but it doesn’t hurt having a little something, up on the tab. IE 7 also displays favicons in the browser tabs. Just don’t sweat it if your icon doesn’t live up to the rest of your site.

Turnkey Websites and Blogger Templates 2007-09-13 15:11:35 You probably know what a turnkey website is, maybe you don’t. I Blog - You Blog has a nice post on making money with turnkey websites. And in case you want to jump right in, run over to Sitepoint Marketplace for turnkey websites for sale. Did I say turnkey websites enough? Turnkey
.
Mashable has a nice list of blogger templates. Funny that Blogger
is one of the top, if not the top hosted blogging platform, yet you read very little about their templates as compared to Wordpress.

Web Design List, Wikipedia Images, Blog from iPhone 2007-09-11 09:44:35 Web design lists don’t get much better then than this, 77 Resources to Simplify Your Life as a Web Design
er, has everything from color pickers to CSS Speech Bubbles.
TechCrunch is reporting that MovableType and TypePad now have iPhone
interfaces. The new interface detects you are using iPhone and allows you to create and edit posts, manage comments, configure mobile settings for posting photos from your iphone. Cool.
Over at Search Engine Land, Durova points out that there is an untapped opportunity for SEO at Wikipedia
. Seems that photos are lacking big time on the Wikipedia. You can fix that by uploading them and getting credit.

Make Web Site Development Easy 2007-09-07 14:35:57 When faced with building a new website, you find that there are a lot of tools to help you. The following are tools that I have used lately, extremely time savings, and all are standards compliant. If you use any of these, I assume you should know basic CSS, HTML and some basic Adobe Photoshop skills.
Blueprint - This CSS framework recently moved to Google Code. Blueprint aims to cut down on your CSS development time. It starts you off with a CSS foundation to build your project, with an easy-to-use grid, typography, and even a stylesheet for printing. It took me all of 5 minutes to figure out how to use, and another 5 to have my layout complete. See a website built with Blueprint here.
Blm Mult-level effect menu is a hybrid CSS/Javascript menu that was a breeze to setup. It has options for horizontal or vertical. Very simple to integrate into a website. Easy to customize with the CSS file included.

$100 for Early iPhone Buyers 2007-09-06 17:16:28 Well, a little good news for early iPhoneBuyers
. Steve Jobs is giving early adopters a $100 store credit. This should be good news for some early iPhone buyers who have been saying they really don’t mind that the phone price went down so soon. Now you have $100 to play with. I suggest blowing it on iTunes.

iPhone Price Drop 2007-09-06 10:29:48 I feel the burn of the early adopter iPhone
buyer today. Apple did the unthinkable yesterday and dropped the price of the iPhone by $200, and totally wiped out the 4GB model. WTF? As I’m sure all the people who stood in line are thinking. It is a little shocking that Apple did this, seeing as iPhone sales weren’t exactly slowing. At $299, you can get the new 8GB iPod, but for $100 more the iPhone. I don’t know about you, but why not spend an extra $100 and have everything in one device?

The Big F 2007-09-01 18:14:36 So a group of military, yeah military, scientists studied the way people read web pages. It seems that people read in an F pattern. From left to right, and that the top two paragraphs on your page are the most important. If there is an image in the top right of the screen, they will check it out, but the eyes naturally like to go to the left and down. What does that mean for you? It means to make sure that your capture you get your most important information to them at the top of the page.
Thanks to Blogging Popular for the article.

Increase Ad Revenue, Learn a Language 2007-09-25 11:23:46 A new service purports to help you gain revenue from Adsense and others by helping you choose the ads and ad networks that will work the best with your site. PubMatic is in alpha mode right now, but you can still register.
Want to learn a language the social networking way? Go check Live Mocha. According to the site it’s the first of it’s kind. It has fun and interactive lessons, and you can track your progress and, I guess, talk to people who actually speak the language you are learning. I wonder if they offer pig Latin?

Internal Linking 2007-10-01 10:00:37 One of my fav blogs has an excellent article on internal linking for SEO. SEOmoztalks about making sure that your internal pages are named properly for Google and other engines. Say you have a site about scooters(like me at Go Motor Scooter.) My site has the name Scooter in the title. One of my categories is Scooter Stores. When someone searches for scooter stores, they are more likely to find my page about scooter stores, than if I named it stores.
Read the article for more information. Especially for the Google robot. Read more:Internal

Ebay Realizes a Mistake 2007-10-04 10:16:02 Well the Skype bubble burst. Ebay has admitted that they paid $1 billion too much for the company. Most people realized that a long time ago, and the founders of Skype have given the boot or reassigned.
I never understood the acquisition in the first place. No need to rehash it, but the market for voip is crowded and getting even more so. Ebay should sell it or spin it off and focus on auctions.

USB Wi-Fi for Old ibooks 2007-12-18 09:28:25 I recently bought an old G3 ibook off of ebay as a backup if my other laptop fails. It was very cheap, under $200, but no airport card. I really wanted one of those nice usb wi-fi adapters, but most I found didn’t support OSX. Well, in case you are every looking, I found one - Asus/Addlogix WL-167g USB 2.0 Wireless WLAN Ad. You might be able to find one of ebay cheaper.

Ubuntu Applications 2007-12-14 10:43:07 Emma Alvarez(to the right) has posted a nice list of 50 open source applications for Ubuntu
. If you don’t know what Ubuntu is, it’s an open source Operating System that is both user friendly and pleasing to the eye. It’s nice to see that applications for Ubuntu are increasing every day. Although I’ve only used it a couple of times, it was easy to use, but I found the apps for it lacking. That was quite a long time ago. I may have to give Ubuntu another shot.

PC Phone Reviews 2007-12-12 16:20:07 Software that allows you to control your mobile from a web browser sounds super duper cool. Imagine being able to add contacts and add events to your calendar from your laptop. However, initial reviews of Noka’s PC Phone software, which does just that, are pretty negative. However their is hope that once they work out the kinks(its in beta), remotely controlling your mobile may just work out in the end.
