A Minor Digg Effect
2007-07-21 19:36:04
Apparently I struck a nerve over at Digg .com with my post a few days back about military personnel donating heavily to Dr. Ron Paul’s presidential campaign. I went to bed Thursday night pleased that I had written something that almost 50 people had enjoyed enough to digg. I awoke Friday morning to discover another 750 had joined them! As of this writing it’s been Dugg 1302 times and buried a good 50 or so if the comments at Digg are to be believed. I very briefly hit the Digg home page and spent a solid 24 hours flipping between the first and second page of their World & Business section. That’s by far the most ‘instant traffic’ this blog has received, so I was a bit concerned about the Digg effect (formerly known as the Slashdot effect). For those who aren’t familiar with the term, here’s a couple of graphs to show you exactly what happens when a story hits on Digg- The above shows the number of unique visitors to Philaahzophy for

Carnival Midway Game Secrets Revealed (Part One)
2007-07-21 09:19:17
Men spend countless dollars every summer in (usually) vain attempts to prove their manhood by winning a prize for their girlfriend, wife or child(ren) at the local amusement park, county fair or traveling carnival. Balls are thrown, guns are shot, and rings are tossed all in an attempt to be ‘the hero’. Well, as a former carny who spent years on the road with the Butler Brothers, I’m here to give you a few tips, save you a little cash, and maybe even help you look like the ‘man’ you want your loved ones to believe you are. First, the basics: Few, if any, carnivals still “rig” their games. There simply is no need. The odds are already stacked in the operator’s favor, just as they are in the casinos. The prizes are so cheap when purchased wholesale and the games so challenging, that cheating simply isn’t necessary. The ’smaller’ the business behind the carnival the more difficult the games will be to win. In other wo

Giuliani: ‘Freedom Is About Authority’
2007-07-20 16:30:48
From the New York Times- We look upon authority too often and focus over and over again, for 30 or 40 or 50 years, as if there is something wrong with authority. We see only the oppressive side of authority. Maybe it comes out of our history and our background. What we don’t see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do. Say what?!? And more than 2/3 of Republicans being polled agree that he would be an ‘acceptable’ candidate? What happened to “personal responsibility”? I though that was the Republican party’s mantra. Authority is to Freedom as Noise is to Silence. They simply can’t coexist. »Tags: Vote 2008, Anarchy, Authority, Freedom, Giuliani , politics, vote 2008

McCarthyism, Blacklisting … back in style?
2007-07-20 15:11:41
Perhaps my google-fu is just weak, but I can’t seem to find anyone really talking about Tuesday’s Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq. Several people have posted the order in its entirety, but few seem to actually interpret or discuss what it means. If you’ve come across such a post, please leave a comment with a link, as I’d really like to read what the more educated have to say about it. What really scares me about it is not- …all property and interests in property of the following persons, that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United States persons, are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in: any person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, (i) to have commit

Water Grass or Get Beat AND Go To Jail!
2007-07-20 03:21:18
Last week I shared the story of David Burch of White Cloud, MI in Grow Grass or Go To Jail. While not directly related, today we bring you the story of Betty Perry, 70, of Orem Utah. From the Salt Lake Tribune- Two days after Independence Day, 70-year-old Betty Perry experienced an ordeal she said shouldn’t be happening in America. The retired military and U.S. government employee answered the door at her home Friday morning to talk with a police officer about her bone-dry lawn and ended up getting arrested and suffering a bloody nose. “What have I done?” she asked. “I’m old now. I can’t believe this.” The Orem police officer, as yet unnamed by city officials, cited Perry for violating a city ordinance with her “sadly neglected and dying landscape,” which resembles dry hay. Yes, it’s not just the Michigan legal system that’s standing up for green grass, but Utah as well. But it turns out Michigan’s going

The Troops Want To Come Home
2007-07-19 15:55:37
File this post from RottingNation.com under “No Surprise To Thinking People”- It is no surprise that the Republican Party has received more campaign contributions from employees of the military than the Democratic Party. However, it may surprise a lot of people to find out that, according to FEC numbers, Ron Paul has received more campaign contributions from military members than any other single candidate. {see original article for numbers} Presidential candidate Ron Paul has received over $7,000 more than McCain who was the closest other candidate. Dr. Paul even received more money from veterans than McCain! It’s interesting to see that the military supports the only anti-Iraq war Republican candidate. It just goes to show you how bad this ‘war‘ really is going. It seems that despite the major media regularly telling us how proud the troops are to be in Iraq, ‘fighting for freedom’, their primary interest seems to be coming home in one piece. At le

Police Do The Right Thing!
2007-07-18 19:27:24
We all know it’s pretty rare to hear about cops doing the right thing, which is the second reason I felt the need to share this story. The first reason? Well, just keep reading… BERLIN (Reuters) - A German man who startled his neighbors when he hurled his computer out of the window in the middle of the night, was let off for disturbing the peace by police who sympathized with his technical frustrations. Police in the northern city of Hanover said they would not press charges after responding to calls made by residents in an apartment block who were woken by a loud crash in the early hours of Saturday. Officers found the street and pavement covered in electronic parts and discovered who the culprit was. Asked what had driven him to the night-time outburst, the 51-year-old man said he had simply got annoyed with his computer. “Who hasn’t felt like doing that?” said a police spokesman. While escaping any official sanction the man was made to clear up the d

Google Makes Good … Finally
2007-07-17 16:46:26
She spent over a year earning money for Google (and a little for herself) through the Google Adsense program. It took her two months, and numerous emails, to actually receive a check from Google. But then came the truly shocking part- So, today I go to cash the check. I’m standing at the teller window, and realize, gee - this is taking a long time. She looks up at me and says, “There aren’t sufficient funds in the account to cover your check.” *stunned silence* I say, “Excuse me, could you repeat that?” She does. My reaction? First, denial and disbelief. I say, “Are you sure? Do you know who Google is? You’re kidding me, right?” She says she does know who Google is, but that this particular account doesn’t have enough funds to cover my check. Yes, despite Adsenes having $804 Million in revenue in the 4th quarter of 2006, they couldn’t cover the check to a single associate. After more than 30 communications with Google including, emails, telephone calls, blo

Trickle Down Poverty?
2007-07-16 17:49:10
Earlier today I stumbled across a post at Ameliorations discussing a paper from the University of Connecticut’s Department of Economics titled Why doesn’t Capitalism flow to Poor Countries?. The post’s author, Chad Perrin of SOB, does an excellent job of summing up the paper’s conclusions and reframing the discussion from the academic language of the paper into nearly conversational language. It was truly an excellent post, which ended with the following poignant conclusion: Leftism leads to poverty. Leftist leaders distract people from the causes of their poverty by promising bread and circuses (or, in modern parlance, “social programs”). The poverty-stricken populace thinks it’s getting something for nothing, so it increases support for leftist leaders as a means of “gettin’ mine” in an increasingly poor system. Voila: vicious circle. However, I don’t see why he stops there. The problem with government isn’t that the leftists are in c

Act TODAY to help ensure your vote for medical marijuana has meaning!
2007-07-24 15:34:00
The following is copied completely frmo the Downsizer Dispatch email I received this morning. Downsizer Dispatch is the newsletter of DownsizeDC.org- Subject: Congress to vote tomorrow on amendment to stop federal arrests in medical marijuana states Everyone is different. Some people are helped by Vioxx, while others are endangered by it. Some medications work in some cases, but not in others. Medical marijuana does little for some patients, but it’s the difference between life and death for many individuals. Your mileage may vary. One size does not fit all. Federal law doesn’t work this way. It takes no account of individual differences and needs. Federal law applies to everyone, equally, from the top down. It tries to nail square pegs into round holes. The pegs are people. The hammering leads to suffering and death. Those who run the federal government seem not to care. One size must be made to fit all. America’s Founders didn’t think this way. They were wis

Carnival Midway Games Revealed (Part Two)
2007-07-24 05:51:01
A quick recap: In Carnival Midway Games Revealed (Part One) I gave my credentials and revealed the “secrets” behind winning some midway classics: Ladder Climb, Machine Gun Star, Basketball, Balloon Darts, Test Of Strength, Speed Throw and the Chicken Catapult. I also addressed the reasons that very few, if any, carnival games are rigged these days, befriending carnies, and choosing where to play. In this installment I’ll cover some more general tips as well as covering another half dozen or so games. I’ve also got a request for y’all, at the end. First some basics: If you can flirt, you may not even need to win. True carnies spend a lot of time on the road. The majority of the men feel they’re quite good with the ladies. They also know, from experience, that a well-placed “winner” may very well get them some company for the evening. If you want that teddy bear bad enough, flirting just may work. Whether you follow through or not

Rich Jerk Marketing Secrets Revealed - For Free!
2007-07-23 20:09:50
The Rich Jerk, aka Kelly Felix, aka CreditPro, Inc. (CPI), is being advertised everywhere these days. In fact they’re probably on this site as you read this! I must see his ads 80-100 times per day. So I finally broke down and got a copy of his book. It’s definitely one of the cleaner eBooks out there as far as readability goes. However, he certainly fulfills his “promise” of being ‘arrogant’ and ‘foul-mouthed’, and his abrasive nature may not be for everyone. But this isn’t actually about the Rich Jerk himself. Rather, it’s about the concepts he shares. Are they worth $197? Not in my opinion. How about $49.95? Maybe if you’re already making $100,000 a year, but not if you’re an average working stiff. But surely it’s worth the current price of $14.95, isn’t it? That may be less than the cost of seeing a movie, but I think I’d rather see Transformers or Harry Potter than pay for the inf

Market Solution for Webcasting Royalties Dilemna
2007-07-23 15:55:13
Eliot Van Buskirk has published what he calls “A Modest Proposal” for webcasting royalties at Wired.com.  He’s got some excellent ideas, but spends the bulk of the article ignoring one of opening premises: “Label representative SoundExchange appears to hold all of the cards.”  The problem here is not that SoundExchange and the webcasters can’t come to an agreement, it’s that SoundExchange knows that it can use the force of government to get essentially whatever agreement it wants.  As a multi-billion dollar company, SoundExchange has far more ability to lobby, and thus influence, governmental and bureaucratic bodies then some guy streaming music from his home computer. Without the guns of the federal government on its side SoundExchange, or more likely the labels or artists themselves, would be forced to actually negotiate with webcasters in order to determine rates.  Should a webcaster refuse to pay the mandated royalties or refrain from

Earlier this month I came across Ilker’s post on Improving Page Rank with Viral -Icons and thought it was a brilliant idea. At the time I was more in reading mode than writing mode, though, so didn’t actually do anything about it. I decided to grab the code from the original source, but have put Niggy’s link in as well. The Truth About War “For A Good Cause”
2007-07-25 23:54:02
Hell’s Handmaiden recently posted on the topic of War As Altruism - The more I think about it, the less the idea makes sense. The machinery of war is the machinery of destruction. Soldiers are a body of individuals trained for destruction. The concept is one of violence. War is meant [to] force one group of people to bend to another group’s will. It seems difficult to justify the use of such a tool as ‘altruistic’. Very well said.  Unfortunately, while the article continues to argue that war can never truly be an altruistic act, the author also fails to reach the ultimate conclusion that war is always a negative thing.  Instead, in his closing paragraph he falls prey to that final wall separating a truly peaceful man from one still on the journey to genuine freedom-  Before someone suggests otherwise, I am not opposed to taking sides. I wish we’d taken sides in Rwanda. I’m glad we took sides in WWII against Germany, but had we not taken sides when we did we’d have

New Anarchist Symbol
2007-07-25 16:32:05
Francois Tremblay, of Check Your Premises, recently presented a new symbol which can now be seen on the top of each page here at Philaahzophy. It’s called the Voluntary Victory symbol- The concept was developed by Niels van der Linden (of The Freedom Channel), and the final result was made by Shawn Huckabay (XOmniverse on YouTube). Its meaning, I hope, is clear: * The black and gold colours are taken from the Market Anarchist flag, and, respectively, represent Anarchy and the market. * The outer and inner V stand for Victory (V for Victory) as well as Voluntaryism. * The handshake at the top represents, as handshakes in general do, mutual trust, voluntary trade, and by extension society. As a whole, it can also be said to represent two important facts: one, that our ultimate goal is to promote society against the State, and not any specific ideal, and two, that victory can only be achieved by voluntary means. -from Check Your Premises »Tags: Anarchy, anarchy, market an

Want State Secrets? Try LimeWire!
2007-07-25 12:49:30
From Ars Technica- Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA), Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform was quoted today as saying: “We used the most popular P2P program, LimeWire, and ran a series of basic searches,” Waxman said. “What we found was astonishing: personal bank records and tax forms, attorney-client communications, the corporate strategies of Fortune 500 companies, confidential corporate accounting documents, internal documents from political campaigns, government emergency response plans, and even military operation orders.” The good news seems to be that the government isn’t ready to go after P2P itself for these problems, but is placing the blame squarely where it belongs - on the bureaucrats who install such software on machines with confidential information: Mary Engle, the associate director for advertising practices at the FTC, didn’t sound quite as ready to blame P2P software for the problem of sharing sensitiv

Auction of the Week

I don’t know about you, but I spend FAR too much time on eBay and other auction sites. Sometimes I’m shopping, but I also simply waste a fair amount of time just wandering around looking for something interesting. Like many sites that allow users to post their own listings eBay has become inundated with “Get Rich Quick” schemes and scams. But this guy seems to have genuinely figured out how to get money for nothing. Don’t believe me? Disclaimer: I have no relationship to this auction. I just stumbled across it and thought y’all would find it interesting. »Tags: Shopping, auction, eBay, money for nothing

The GPT World: Then and Now
2007-07-30 00:05:08
I first started working GPT programs back in 2000. I spent about a year as a hardcore GPT user, doing it all: Paid To Surf, Paid To Read, Paid To Click, Manual Surf, AutoSurf, Traffic Exchanges even bubbles and HYIP. The few “profits” I made were basically dumped back in to advertising and membership upgrades. Profits needs to be in quotes because I was spending 70-80% of my online time working these programs. And that time wasn’t exactly trivial. Then, as now, I was online an average of 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. I learned a quite a few lessons in that year. Unfortunately, I never learned how to actually make any money. I came back into the GPT world in June. This time my expectations are much lower and the community itself is a lot different. Very few of the programs I worked years ago are still around, which shouldn’t really be surprising. Many of the same scams are being run, though, which also isn’t surprising, though it’s just as s

Superbad Looks Super Hilarious
2007-07-31 23:39:20
Yeah, yeah, it’s not the most original headline, but it’s true. In my house we have a pretty simple system when it comes to new comedy films: if my roommates want to see it, I don’t. This probably has something to do with the fact that they’re in their early 20s and I’m in my late 30s. Super bad is the exception that proves the rule. I can not wait to see this movie. It’s from the people behind The 40 Year Old Virgin, which I definitely found amusing (though my roommates worship the film), but looks like it’s going to blow that film out of the water. If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard about Superbad (or just need a few good laughs) then take a brief interlude from reading this post and visit the Superbad YouTube Homepage Takeover right now to check out 5 different videos from the film! Don’t wait as the Homepage Takeover is one day only – today, August 1, 2007. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. You

“The Innocent Have Nothing To Worry About”
2007-07-31 21:28:23
Whenever someone makes a blog post or the press has a report about the police violating someone’s rights the instant refrain is “if you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.” I’m so tired of hearing this! Do people really believe that the police only harass criminals? Whatever happened to “innocent until proven guilty”? Not that even that presumption is good enough in many cases. For those who believe there are no innocent people in jail, here’s a list of more than 200! Not enough? Well, here’s a list of more than 100 people who were sentenced to the death penalty only to be later exonerated! These lists are only of those convicted of serious crimes who have had one (or more) organizations spend thousands of dollars and countless hours working to prove their innocence. Can you really look over these lists and still believe that only the guilty are even charged of crimes? There’s a reason that

Going Legit: Easing The Pain Of Incorporation
2007-07-31 12:06:31
Several years ago I was instrumental in creating a non-profit corporation to promote spoken word and the San Jose Poetry Slam. As the only person in the scene with any business experience the job of figuring out the steps and filing the paperwork to become a corporate entity fell upon my shoulders. Since what little revenue we had was earmarked to return to the artists themselves I decided to do the work myself instead of paying a registered agent a couple of hundred dollars to handle things for us. Big mistake. Everything worked out fine, but I spent about 60 hours tracking everything down, meeting with bureaucrats, completing and re-completing various forms. Had I known about California Inc. at the time I would have been saved a lot of grief. And it would have only cost us about $2.00 per hour of time saved! That’s time I could have spent working on growing and developing our actual business instead of jumping through regulatory hoops. California Inc., part of EastBiz.co

Gangs In The Military - This Is News?
2007-07-30 20:23:09
Various stories of gang members being in the armed forces seem to be popping up everywhere over the last week or so. Not just in the blogosphere, but in local and national media outlets as well. “The public” is expressing shock and dismay that such a thing could occur, according to many of these reports. As usual, “how could this happen?” seems to be the question of the day. My question is, how could this not happen? The Army is just a really big gang, after all. Before highlighting the similarities between a street gang and a government authorized gang, let’s look at how our armed forces are responding to this sudden awakening: CBSnews.com reports- The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command reported 61 gang investigations and incidents last year, compared to just 9 in 2004. Meanwhile, NBCSanDiego.com reports- Army recruiting headquarters in Washington, D.C., dismiss the claims as urban myth. An Army spokesman said army background checks are extens

Upwardly Mobile No Longer So Mobile

Statistics on San Jose Mortgages show that although roughly 2% of San Jose area housing is currently vacant, less than 1/5 of 1% (0.2%) of housing, just over 700 homes, are currently vacant and available for sale. The problem isn’t that homeowners don’t want to step up to bigger and better housing, but rather that the gulf between their current home’s marketability and that of the next step is growing on a near daily basis. According to the San Jose Mercury News, “there’s a 36-day supply of houses for sale now, half the supply of a year ago,” in the wealthier neighborhoods of Palo Alto, Mountain View and Los Altos. Meanwhile in the lower and middle class areas of “central, East and South San Jose, it would take more than a year - 389 days - to sell off the current inventory of houses for sale“. In other words, the rich just keep on buying houses while the working class just keeps on paying rent to the rich, enabling them to buy even mo

Why I’m Dropping The WePaid.com PTR Program
2007-08-05 14:48:06
I joined the Wepaid.com PTR/PTP program on July 9,2007. I joined after finding them on BeenPaid.com where they are a Diamond member of 2+ years, and had been in business for more than five years, which is almost unheard of in the PTR world. With a $4.00 minimum payout, 5 referral levels (20%-10%-5%-5%-1%) and zero complaints against them it seemed almost a no brainer to join if one was going to join any PTR program. But a month later I’m canceling my account. Not because they’ve done anything wrong, not because I don’t believe I’ll be paid, but because it’s simply too expensive a program to participate in. Like most Paid To Read programs, WePaid is free to join, though they do offer a Gold Membership which awards advertising credits and free referrals. It’s not the money that’s become too expensive, but the time. Most PTR programs require 4 to 5 clicks in order to read and view a paid ad: 1) open email, 2) click on link, 3) click on CAPT

My New Site For Booking Rooms On The Road
2007-08-09 20:44:29
Since I’ve been spending so much time and effort working on the blog lately, and narrowly missed WordCamp in nearby San Francisco, I’ve been strongly considering attending PostieCon. It’s a one day conference in Las Vegas this November. Of course, the last trade show I went to Vegas wasn’t very successful for me personally as I ended up gambling way too much. So should I decide to go I need to ensure I stay not only somewhere inexpensive, but without a major casino in the lobby and still near the Las Vegas Convention Center. The usual places for booking online: Orbitz and Expedia. unfortunately, neither of these sites had an option to sort by both price and proximity to the convention center. Not too surprising considering these sites are far more focused on selling airline tickets (which I won’t need) then Hotel Reservations. After stumbling around a few hotel/motel chain sites, I found HotelReservations.com. It’s a nice clean site with the
