Harry Potter and the Order Of Phoenix 2007-07-13 17:17:46 We saw it on Saturday.
Highlights:
Cho Chang (Elena calls her Chow Ming for some reason) was cute when she was 11 in the “H.P. and the Saucerer’s Stone” (intentionally misspelled), but now she’s just “third world ugly” (borrowed that phrase from Chris Tucker from “Rush Hour” - 3rd installment coming soon!).
Hermione Granger was not that cute when she was 11-year old 1st-year student at Hogwarts, and now she looks like a tri-breasted mutant from “Total Recall”. Not at all attractive.Dolores Umbridge in her all-pink outfit and annoying giggles looks like Laura Bush. This book is much longer the other ones, and they tried to squeeze it into what already is a 2 hours 20 minutes movie, and a lot of spicy episodes from the book were dropped. Sirius Black’s head appears in the fireplace only once, and grumpy Kreacher only appears in two scenes. Most, if not all dialogs from the book were cut down to essential phrases. T Read more:Harry

Mandela and de Klerk (1997) 2007-07-23 13:00:57 In 1964, Nelson Mandela
, along with several other members of his party and political detainees, were convicted for treason (technically they were charged with capital crimes of sabotage, which Mandela admitted - the charges were easier for the government to prove then treason) against South Africa, and sentenced to life in prison. They were to be held on Robben island. Mandela’s closing statement at the trial was this:
“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to the struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”.
Their imprisonment had become the symbol of violent struggle between white minority government and black majority against the policy
Bridge To Terabithia (2007) 2007-07-25 01:31:51 Warning: this is Disney. This is a good sweet movie, but it’s a fairy tale for kids.
The plot: a 10-year old boy Jess from a poor family wants to be the fastest runner in his class, but he is outran by a new girl, Leslie, in Jess’ school, although the race was called a “boys only” race by their classmates. Not a good way to start a friendship. But they both have a lot of things in common: he is into drawing and she is very good at writing; both are tormented by bullies from the 8th grade. Together they venture into the near-by forest where they discover a swing-rope over a small river and an abandoned tree-house. There they create an imaginary world they can escape to from hard reality, where all the creatures they have to face are based on their tormentors in school. They also find a clever way to get back at bullies, but they find out that it only brought a short-lived satisfaction. They realize they are becoming bullies themselves. But eventually reality Read more:Terabithia

Superbad (2007) 2007-08-20 11:33:06 No matter how bad or filthy the jokes is, the key to its delivery is perfect timing. And this movie is super bad! It’s full of sexual humor, the F word was said hundreds of times, and even the closing credits have cartoons with cocks as the main characters - very crude but funny nevertheless [...]
Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World (2005) 2007-08-19 14:13:19 A struggling actor/comedian Albert Brooks, played by a comedian Albert Brooks (The Simpsons Movie, The in-laws, Doctor Dolittle, Taxi Driver, Real Life, Lost in America etc.), receives a letter from the State Department. First he thinks he’s going to jail for checking out Al Quaeda website on the Internet (same fears people in USSR had [...] Read more:Comedy

Silent Hill (2006) 2007-08-19 02:48:31 Based on video game, which I haven’t played. Since I’ve seen other game-to-movie adaptation I didn’t expect much. “Doom”, for example, was a really bad movie. It’s about a woman, Rose, has a sick daughter, Sharon, who has seizures and nightmarish dreams about a city of Silent
Hill, and who’s also sleep-walking. To help her, Rose takes her to this [...] Read more:Silent Hill
Full Lunar Eclipse (August 28, 2007) 2007-08-28 06:14:00 Yours truly stayed up all night to watch and make pictures of the Lunar
eclipse.
It was gorgeous! I took my 15×60 binoculars, Canon 20D camera with tripod and 300mm zoom image-stabilizing lens, and went out to the warm summer night. The eclipse began a little later then predicted. At 12:52am there was nothing but a dark blur over the upper-left side. So I went indoors for another 30 minutes. Good idea since sprinklers came on.
I came back out with all the gear at around 1:30am and began to shoot pictures.
You can see the entire album here: http://public.fotki.com/MaxiMovieBlog/lunar-eclipse/ including bad ones. I thought I’d include them too in case you want to learn from my mistakes.
Feel free to leave your comments, but be nice!
I was playing with the camera trying different settings and trying with or without ND filter and circular polarizer. In the beginning of the eclipse the moon was still very bright, and all pictures were not coming out well: the moon was a bright Read more:August
War (2007) 2007-08-31 09:52:46 The plot: Jack Crawford (Jason Statham) is an FBI agent from Asian crime division seeking revenge for the murder of his partner (John Lone) and his family. Although his 3 year-long quest for vengeance cost him his marriage, he doesn’t stop looking for a mysterious and illusive assassin called “Rogue” (Jet Li), who has his own score to settle, setting up Japanese mobs, the Triads and Yakuza, against each other. When Jack catches up to Rouge and meets him face to face, the truth about their past will be revealed.
The good: action scenes were very well choreographed. Jet Li is martial arts.. well.. artist, and Jason Statham has proven to be very effective at action sequences as we know from the Transporter and mindless, but entertaining Crank. His cynicism and sarcasm is a great match for the character of Jack Crawford. I actually think that if Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” hadn’t come out earlier, this could have been a new Japanese-sword-wielding-ga

The movie is set in Northern part of Franko’s Spain in 1944. In the opening sequence we see a girl, obviously shot, dying on the ground. Then we are transferred back in some time. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is a very young girl who is traveling with her pregnant mother Carmen (Ariadna Gil) to her new step-father Capitán Vidal, who’s a Spanish army officer (Sergi López, whom an American viewer might remember for his role in “Dirty Pretty Things” with Audrey Tautou). The army is still fighting the Resistance in the North. Right from the start, Ofelia creates an i Read more:Labyrinth
Fracture (2007) R 1:40 2007-09-22 19:04:45
One of my most favorite actors, and maybe the best actor of the 20th century, Sir Antony Hopkins is starring in this thriller - the primary reason why I wanted to see it.
Hopkins plays an NTSB consultant, quite wealthy judging by his ride and his LA house with huge pool and garden, who finds out that his much younger wife is cheating on him, confronts her and then shoots her (there’s a nice shot of his face reflecting in her blood on the floor). When police arrives, he says he shot her in the head. But the detective who comes to the call is the man she’s been cheating with. His wife is alive though and she’s taken to hospital and stays there in a coma. Ted, Hopkins’s character, is arrested. Then we are introduced to Ryan Gosling’s character, a very “productive” prosecutor William Beachum, who is assigned to procure this attempted homicide. To his surprise, Ted not only gives a full confession while entering not-guilty plea, but declines to b

“Knock on Wood” is the American title of this excellent French classic - a comedy directed by Msr. Francis Veber and starring great comedian Pierre Richard and famous Gérard Depardieu. I have not seen it since the 80s when it was in theatres and also on TV (we had black&white TV back then) and loved it. Watching it again 25 years later is a lot of fun. It was a big hit in Russia/USSR when it came out under title “Nevezuchiye” (literally, “Unlucky ones”) in late 80s, and I shall add this information to IMDb: they only list release data in France, USA and Mexico. It was also remade by Veber in US in 1991 starring Martin Short and Denny Glover under title “Pure Luck”, and I thought the latter just wasn’t as good - it was more like “National Lampoons” - a goofy movie. But the original was excellent and sweet. The chemistry between the two actors, Richard and Depardieu is amazing. Although it’s not the best Ri
Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” (2005) PG-13 181min 2007-09-18 02:01:36
It was so bloody long! And extended version is 20 minutes longer!
It seems PeterJackson
is still in his &ldquo
;Lord of the Rings&rdquo
; mode with huge budgets, enormous landscapes and mountains so tall one cal almost reach the Moon from them.
My most favorite King Kong
is still one from the 1976: when I was a little kid my world was smaller too, and animatronics felt so real… The human heroes were a lot more likeable too.
This version is set in Depression era. A struggling (who wasn’t?), but very ambitious film director Carl Denham (Jack Black) is making an epic picture, and he’s prepared to tell any lie to his cast and crew to make them go to a recently discovered Skull Island to shoot to movie on location. He even manages to practically kidnap the play-writer Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) to write the script he needs and picks up an unemployed actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) for a supporting female role. He feeds his crew, his cast and even the Captain Engelhorn
Shoot ‘Em Up (2007) 86min R 2007-09-16 01:41:58 Saw it just 30 minutes ago.
The plot: Mr. Smith (Clive Owen) is sitting at the bus stop, minding his business and chewing on his carrot (well, everybody has a habit, and this guy loves carrots, which he grows in his apartment) sees a pregnant woman on the run from a bunch of thugs and helps her with the delivery of the baby, while using her gun to keep the thugs away. “I am a British nanny, and I’m dangerous”, he says. But the thugs weren’t after just the woman - they were after her baby too. Mr. Smith has to protect the baby and figure out who needs to kill little newborn boy and why. He is chased by Mr. Hertz (Paul Giamatti) and never-ending army of his goons, and gets help with the baby from a lactating prostitute DQ (Monica Belucci). Predictably, Mr. Smith uncovers the evil plot involving a Democratic presidential hopeful with anti-gun control agenda and shoots everybody behind it in the most shamelessly outrageous and funny action flick I’ve see Read more:lsquo
