Insurgency. The summer’s most popular game server? 2007-07-02 10:56:15 I’ve a quick break from the support tickets to catch some breath…
With the game’s developers stating the game so close, gunshots can be heard, we ask, just what is the kerfuffle surrounding this game?
Lazy I know, but quoting direct from the official Insurgency
site for starters:
Insurgency’s primary concept is to create an immersive online combat experience for the player, with an emphasis on teamwork and realistic elements to create intense firefights in detailed urban environments. The first scenario is set during the present war in Iraq, after the fall of the government and the uprising insurgency that followed as a result.
What’s that in short? Having talked to a member of the team, he quotes it as a cross between CS Source and Battlefield 2. Battlefield 2 without the irritating base spammers. Wow, get me some of that.
For me, the media (although in short supply, does the pre-reputation justice. Just look at this:

Taking the moral high ground: walkthrough, FAQ, and cheat codes 2007-06-24 09:20:20 In 2291, in an attempt to control violence among deep space miners, the new earth government legalised no-holds-barred fighting.
In 2007, in an attempt to control controversy among computer game developers, John of INX Gaming wrote a walkthrough and FAQ about taking the moral high ground
in games development, which led to no-holds-barred fighting. It went:
1. Violence must have context.
“IFCO recognises that in certain films, DVDs and video games, strong graphic violence may be a justifiable element within the overall context of the work. However, in the case of Manhunt 2, IFCO believes that there is no such context, and the level of gross, unrelenting and gratuitous violence is unacceptable.” The Ireland Film Censors Office banned its first ever game, swayed by the fact that being able to mutilate someone’s genitals for entertainment is difficult to condone. It’s all too easy to say “well, that’s just IFCO, who cares?” Well, the censors in Gre Read more:Taking
Why “they” should merge STALKER and FEAR 2007-06-18 09:54:24 When I play FEAR I am always struck by the quality of the AI: when you burst out on a group of enemy soldiers they swear, duck, and run for cover. They’ll break windows and jump through the other side for cover. After you attack them they (audibly) find out how many people are left and assess the situation. You don’t need to suspend any disbelief to think that you are attacking a highly trained group of soldiers.
When I play STALKER I am always struck by the quality of the game environment. If you choose to wipe out a group of mercenaries that are holding off a vicious group of pseudodogs then the next time that you return to the area the dogs will be in force. If you do choose to do missions for one faction then their members will like you more, and be more likely to fight for you in future. The game environment is an autonomous immersable machine.
So which &ldquo
;they&rdquo
; should produce a game that is immersive on both local and global levels? “They” would Read more:merge
Nobody does it better 2007-06-15 09:22:38 One the most frustrating things of being the UK’s leading game server provider, is your unimaginative ‘competitors’ copy overything you do.
Whether it be game servers for a quid a slot….fast downloads…..hardware….
Over the years our competitors have copied all our good ideas. And generally executed them in a sucky way. ul.
It does suck, but as Del Monte just said to me on Yahoo Messenger….’It’s a compliment really‘.
Having just seen a medium sized competitor create their own blog, I did cough and screach ‘FFS! Get an imagination!‘ at the top of my voice, but then started cackling after that. The kind of competitor that uses poor performance Windows for game servers (rofls), and an off the shelf control panel they can’t alter….because they don’t have that ability to do otherwise.
There are game server providers out there we have lots of respect for. These aren’t one of them. I suppos Read more:better

Forum Changes 2007-05-31 07:21:22 Last night we committed some changes to the forum, mostly rearranging some existing forums, merging a couple together and adding one or two more.
What does this mean for you? Well not much really All the good stuff is still there waiting for you to add your 50pence worth.
To go into a little more detail, the forums have been divided up into two main categories.
The first is Community and Entertainment, which is for discussing everyday life, sharing a joke, or talking about that brilliant film you’ve seen and just wanted to share with everyone. You can discuss who won the latest football game or you can meet up with potential clan members or opponents if you’re looking for a match.
The second is Gaming and Technology, for discussing Gaming and Technology surprisingly enough Wanna show everyone the cool maps or mods you’ve got on your INX gameserver? Battlefield 2 Ranked Game Servers 2007-05-25 14:24:13 There’s been quite a lot of discussion on the forums about this recently. Basically, Electronic Arts are refusing to allow us to sell ranked BF2 game servers (because to do so you must be a member of EA’s trusted partner scheme). Every time we try to make contact, they either ignore us (and believe me, we’ve tried everything, even leaving people voicemails and inviting them out to lunch!) or they reply with a pre-written response along the lines of “the scheme is full”.
Battlefield 2 is going down the toilet. When ET Quakewars comes out, the toilet will be well and truly flushed. The only way to restore the game to its former glory is to have more stable (and cheaper) game servers online. Cheaper game servers = more people buying game servers, therefore the game becomes more popular; simple! And we hope to charge 99p per slot for a BF2 ranked game server, just like all our other games.

Game Server User Manager and File Server Trouble! 2007-05-22 19:41:43 This week we’re happy to present the User Manager tool, which has been released in addition to a new login screen. The user manager is very much a unique tool to our system. It allows you to create control panel user accounts for your team/clan members so they can login and access various functions of the panel that you make available to them.
So, say you want your team member ‘Bob’ to be able to restart the game server and edit files (such as game server map cycle) but nothing more… it’s simple! Click onto the User Manager page, click Add User and tick the game panel features that you wish Bob to have access to. Our system will then create an account for him so he can login; this will not only make the busy and stressful life of a game server owner much easier, but your clan members can enjoy using the panel too. In fact, maybe they could help donate towards the cost of the server if they get an account to login and control parts of it? The choice is all Read more:Trouble
Online gaming & the future of game servers 2007-05-18 13:27:43 Where to now?
I remember back when sequals were released on my old Commodore Amiga 1200, and before that my 500, and proceeding that, less so my Amstrad 646 CPC. Less so because I would only have been at the most 7 years of age at the time. I was but a gaming young jedi at the time. If I were to print on our company website I was wet at the prospect of some releases, I am sure Del Monte will be dropping me an emailing owning me. ‘DO NOT talk dirty on our company website!’ I’m under strict instructions to remain professional in our game servers
blog. And professional I shall remain.
And besides, no-one wants to read about a fat knacker getting moist over computer games. /me runs
Dino Dini’s Goal. Sensible WORLD of Soccer. Yes, I was a big football fan and this was really before any decent FPS could be played. The previews of these games had me positively salivating at the mouth.

New Game Panel Feature - File Editor 2007-05-16 10:03:42 We have some good news for all you game server customers out there! The game server control panel has been updated today with a fantastic new feature: a file editor! “What’s so special about that?” I hear you cry… well, this is no ordinary file editor; it features full versioning support, which means every time you update or edit a file, it saves it for you (with a useful name and a date stamp) so you can revert back to any particular version of the file at any time! It gives you control over many core game files for your game server, therefore meaning that you don’t have to use FTP. How handy.
I might well have confused you, so let me clarify: Say, for example, you update your server.cfg file with some new gravity settings, and after testing them on the game server you decide you don’t want super-low gravity, you can jump back onto the game panel and revert back to an older version of your server.cfg! Simple, eh?

Insurgency at INX! 2007-07-25 12:34:22 At last, after rigorous testing, we are happy to announce that you can now safely switch your game servers to and from Insurgency
! We are also accepting Insurgency orders which will be setup instantly via our automated system.
If you already have an account with us, here’s the quickest way to install the game:
1. Log into the Server Control Panel
2. Click on ’switch game’ next to the game you are currently running.
3. Select ‘Half-Life 2: Insurgency’ from the list. Do not tick the ‘install game’ box, just click Switch!
4. Back on the main page you will see an ‘Update’ button. Click this then restart your game server.
Please note that although we have tested the game thoroughly, Insurgency may not work perfectly for all customers. The game itself is still in beta so do not expect it to be bug free for at least several weeks. May I remind you that the game takes a good 30 seconds to load after you click the Start/Restart button; the
The Demo Dilemma 2007-08-06 06:15:54 Recently I downloaded the XBox 360 demo of Codemaster’s Overlord. And I was hooked from the very first line. After all, I think that we can agree that “Rub some acid in his eyes: That’ll freshen him up!” is an awesome opening line. The rest of the demo followed the same style: well-scripted, with tongue in cheek minions encouraging you to be evil, and damn good fun.
After purchasing the game I thought I was onto something. After all, if I’d have played a demo of Dead Rising I’d have known before purchase that the mission-critical text was impossible to read on my Standard Definition screen. So I decided to download more game demos to evaluate. Please note that the following are not meant to be in-depth reviews of the game, they are deliberately very short and non-exhaustive reviews of the game demos.

Why I HATE Gears of War! 2007-09-20 09:06:56 I am about to do the unthinkable. I am about to utter ghastly words of sacriliege, the likes of which have never been heard before. My blasphemous cries will rouse anger, hatred, and condemnation from the entire world. I will be shunned by the gaming community. I will be flamed as an enemy by my entire 360 friendslist. I will become an outcast by my public declaration of hatred of Gears
of War.
“Wtf!?” you cry. “It’s the most awesome Third Person Shooter out there, and one of the best 360 games!” Those I cannot disagree with. But if you’d have just been on a 4 man team that dropped to a 2 man team when the turncoat buggers discovered that the other 4 players play like world champions (I mean how else could they do that with the shotgun?) you’d feel the same way too. If this happened twice in a row, you’d be up in arms.
Now I am no n00b. I am on chapter 4 of insane difficulty of the campaign, which I think merits itself. I can active reloa
2007-09-20 09:06:34 So the beta Orange box has been released. Hurrah! whoopee! Great. No, er wait. Why STEAM, insist on putting the games in a folder called “orangebox” when we load the server files? It doesn’t keep in with our file structure. It makes no sense. It’s irritating. Please change the full release back as normal, where game folders go into the srcds folder. It’s easy

We have a pre-order page for Team Fortress 2 servers. Unfortunately the usual instant setup, and marvellous instant availability we like to offer isn’t on offer yet. Hopefully it’ll be only a couple of days for STEAM to pull their cyber finger out.
Team Fortress 2 servers are available in Windows only. Here we go again. Again, this seems daft. Why are beta’s so increasingly ‘BETA’! Linux servers out number Windows servers two to one. Give us what we want, I say, damnit!
Why? Because generally Linux offers far better performance than “poi
A couple of new games to play with 2007-09-14 10:22:56 Autumn’s always great fun for new releases. And wow, we’re spoilt for choice at the moment. Having tested, we’ve added a couple
new releases to the website, and to the panel. You can switch to these games immediately on the panel if you are current customer, or add a new order if you want! Go on…
The first game we’ve added is Warsow. Not exactly new, no. Take a look at our Warsow game servers page for some more detailed info on the game itself. We were asked to test this by a customer and it seems to run fine. Very popular it seems for competitions and the likes.
The second game we’ve added is the appetite wetting Team Fortress forever. We’ve added a FF gaming servers page for it, naturally. I’m not sure how Fortress Forever is going to take off, given Team Fortress 2 is out very shortly. Not the best timing, but hey, it’s free. Switchable on the panel, so why not give it a go this weekend?

Team Fortress Forever - a pretender to the throne? 2007-09-07 10:01:10 Here at INX-Towers, we’ve got a bet going.
We all know Enemy Territory Quake Wars is going to be big this summer. Without getting too carried away, I’ve got a few games I think will pip it to the post of Summer king. It takes me back to A-Level history. 14th-16th century history, no less. Think of Counterstrike Source as Louis XII of France. A true warrior king. And France, the long living giant, set for the gallows as the proletariat hang the game dry. Is Counterstrike a game that will live for ever more, but ultimately doomed to disappear.
Then there’s Battlfield 2. Let’s not include Battlefield 2142. Battlefield 2 the Charles of Burgundy. The queer shaped chin on the face of online gaming. The fantastic game with amazing reaching power, but limited from growing to its full potential by the ranked farce.
Quake Wars, the Henry VIII. Glamorous, revolutionary. Pushing back the boundaries. We hope not ridden with syphallis. This will be a big game no doubt, but wh Read more:Forever

Enemy Territory Quake Wars 2007-09-06 10:09:21 Unfortunately I don’t bring any good news in this blog post. In fact, it’s the news I was expecting, and dreading bringing you for a while. For this moment in time on release, we won’t be able to offer you EnemyTerritoryQuake
Wars servers. I had a hint this would happen when we weren’t chosen to host the beta servers.
It’s a huge shame because we were going to offer you, our thousands of game server players, the chance to switch instantly to the new game on release via our custom control panel. We will however, be offering the unranked version hopefully on release. So it’s not all that bad…I guess.
So why weren’t we chosen? We tried to work with the developers from the start, but we feel it was quite apparant that two other GSP’s had already got in. I think we were too late, although this isn’t really confirmed or know.
From what I’ve seen so far, there are two definite providers, although I can’t confirm this. Read more:Enemy Territory

If you need to know how to use FTP, please use this link.

Now that we have the CMS downloaded, we need to upload it to our web hosting. We will use ftp for this, as there are a lot of files. The details you need for FTP are:
FTP Host : Your free sub-domain.
FTP User : Your FTP Username (Usually your Control Panel Username).
FTP Pass: Usually the same password for your INX Control Panel.
Once you have logged in, you should have something that looks like this. Now to show the CMS, the files must be in the public_html folder, so d Read more:Gaming

JACK THOMPSON is becoming DISGRUNTLED! EVERYBODY TAKE COVER! 2007-10-09 18:11:37 We’re in trouble team.
I don’t envy the people at Rockstar: thank God it’s them not us is all I can say. They’ve really overstepped the line this time! Not only have they been encouraging craven violence by releasing a game where it’s possible to run people over, but now they’ve included a mission where you can kill an attention seeking lawyer whose only crime was to speak out against all the fireballs that Mario players have been throwing since the early 90s.
I wasn’t going to buy GTA4 on release (they haven’t made any really dramatic improvements in game play since GTA3 in my opinion, and it’s just not as interesting as Saints’ Row was), but I’m more likely to having read about a mission which indicates Rockstar North’s sense of satirical humour. No I didn’t buy Bully or Manhunt, I’m not going to, and I’m not touching Manhunt 2 with a bargepole. But if the rest of GTA4 is going to have that fla

The Byronic March 2007-10-22 10:36:23 I have just finished reading Simon Byron’s article on the final page of this month’s Develop magazine (Oct 2007). He stumpled upon something that I’ve secretly suspected for a long time when he said “Imagine if they (shopkeepers) tested mobile phone games before completing the transaction. It’d be the death of the market, because everyone would realise that they’re all actually s***.”
As much as it pains me to say it, Simon has a point. Since Snake have any mobile phone games really taken their players by storm? Not many. One of my friends who I worked on a recent cross-platform title with had prievously worked for a company which made mobile phone games in Java. He had plenty of stories of bad implementation by people who were just trying to break into the mainstream games industry. If the people who are making the games aren’t interested in them how can we expect them to be of a high enough standard to take on the PSP or the DS?
And yet Read more:March

Awesome Xmas lineup 2007-11-08 15:11:37 Socks. Socks, socks, more socks. Always with the socks.
OK, it’s not as bad as that really, but a good habit is to buy yourself a game that you like for Christmas. Or that dull but stressful bit of pre-Christmas December where you’re waiting for Christmas to arrive.
I was scouring Amazon when I realised that we have got an impressively good lineup
ahead. An annoying facet of the games industry is that there are far more sales at Christmas than any other time of year, that the same game released in January will simply not do as well as the same game released in November. If you release in February may god help you. If you release in March god cannot help you.
Did I say annoying? I must have meant for the developers. Surely not for die hard horror fans: this month alone we have Jericho (cross platform) and Hellgate: London (PC only). FEAR Files will finally be bringing the FEAR Extraction Point and FEAR Perseus expansion packs to the Xbox 360. Sci-fi roleplaying games are goi Read more:Xmas
Call of duty 4 servers 2007-11-13 14:58:45 I hate to sound like a stuck record on one of those WW2 fps maps, but why do us Linux guys get such a hard deal?
Call of Duty 4 is fantastic. However, it’s in danger of going the same way as Insurgency…ETQW. Those other games that had that potential to live up to something great.
And my gripe in the case of COD4….No sodding linux server files, again.
Did the COD boys not learn from their former ties with Medal of Honour? The Medal of Honour Airbourne farce is covered in such great detail across the net, it really needs no introduction. For those in the dark, picture a recurring nightmare for Linux game server providers.
Game X gets hyped up beyond belief, pre-release. Wow @ those screenies. OMFG @ those trailors. We cannot wait. I am busting a nut with excitement (really).

Call of Duty 4 linux finally here! 2007-11-27 09:25:36 Woo hoo!

Call of Duty 4 has finally been patched to work on Linux. As such INX-Gaming are now offering Call of Duty 4 game servers with instant setup!

A slice of Jericho 2007-12-02 09:14:37 Codemaster waded into this season’s computer game battles with this gruesome offering at an unfortunate time to be competing in the FPS arena. Call of Duty IV, Half Life2: The Orange Box, Timeshift, and Blacksite Area 51 are all fighting for the title of best Christmas Shooter and none of them are to be taken lightly.
But Jericho
can hold its own against that competition. For one thing its build quality is fantastic: exquisite modelling is brought to life by top quality animation and has a consistently smooth framerate, the visual effects, game script, and sound are done properly but not overdone (except for the intro voiceover sequence), and it’s plain that a lot of perfectionism went into this production. A lot of the levels are just magnificient. Unfortunately, rather than just cash in on this modelling prowess in the conventional and successful way, Jericho’s levels are swamped in gore: mounds of what look like raw flesh and dead people cover the ground in places,
