JOLIET, Ill. - Michael Waltrip steered his NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry to a 30th-place finish at Chicagoland Speedway. The team battled a variety of handling conditions throughout the 267-lap event before Waltrip regained competitive form in the closing laps.
“My NAPA AUTO PARTS Camry started out competitive, but we lost the handle on it during the middle part of the race, and it cost us a ton of ground,” said Waltrip after starting the race in 28th position. “The crew worked incredibly hard, and by the end, we rebounded and got our Camry in competitive form. We battled Nemechek for position there at the end and went back and forth. I really wanted to top him, but he was just a little better than us when it mattered most
Junior Dumps the Bud 2007-07-15 21:14:04 If your kid ever wanted a Dale Jr. hat, and you were reluctant to buy it because it was a beer advertisement, take heart! Next year Dale will have merchandise that the responsible parent can buy for their kids, with no beer endorsement. And you will need new gear, because its unlikely that Dale will be driving the ‘8′, requiring all fans to buy all new gear….
But then, thats the way of merchandising isn’t it…
Dale Earnhardt Jr. won’t be flashing the Budweiser red firesuit or car in the 2008, but it won’t stop the driver seemingly more fitting with his sponsor than any other in the Nextel Cup garage from enjoying a cold one from the company that has been backing him since his Nextel Cup career began. You don’t have to pay me to drink the beer, Earnhardt said Friday at Chicagoland Speedway. It’s good beer and I’ll always drink it. And I enjoy it. That’s part of my life.

Shut Yer Yap Tony Eury Jr. 2007-07-06 13:06:30 NASCAR vice president for corporate communications Jim Hunter said on Thursday at Daytona International Speedway that suspended crew chiefs should stay away from the racetrack, or risk further sanctions.
On Tuesday NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France spoke on the sanctioning body’s weekly teleconference regarding reports that all three crew chiefs who were under suspension at the time — Tony Eury Jr. of DEI and Chad Knaus and Steve Letarte of Hendrick Motorsports — had attended last weekend’s event at New Hampshire International Speedway.
France said he had just come from a meeting with NASCAR president Mike Helton and that “we would be addressing that very shortly.”
Hunter said no further announcements were forthcoming on the subject, but that Knaus and Letarte, who are suspended for four more races after Saturday night’s Pepsi 400, should take heed.
“I think Brian made it pretty clear what we’ve always wanted to do, when we su
What it means for Montoya to Win 2007-07-01 17:59:29
The race at Infineon in Sonoma might have been won on fuel mileage, and strategy, but its very significant that the winner was Juan Pablo Montoya
, and therefore it made news around the world. If Gordon, Johnson, or any other Nascar driver had won that race, it would have been big news in the US, but not elsewhere.
The fact that Montoya is a known celebrity from other forms of racing (the third driver to win in Formula 1, Indy cars (CART), and Nascar, following Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti) means that the world does notice. And the fact that he is a foreign national helps as well.
His notoriety also tends to reinforce Nascar’s ‘diversity’ program, adding a Hispanic to the lineup of stars and bringing Colombian flags to the raceways (particularly in Mexico City where he won the junior circuit (Busch) race, and in Sonoma.
In January 2007, after Michael Schumacher publicly questioned the excitement of NASCAR racing on ovals, Montoya retorted that “People don&rsqu
Track Smack - Penalties for the 48 and 24 2007-06-28 21:16:06 1) The ax has fallen on Hendrick Motorsports or, given it was the exact same penalty given to Tony Eury Jr., was it only a rubber mallet, designed to bruise but not really cause any damage?
Dave Rodman: At the risk of being ignorant or naive, I’ll say it was far less than I expected. Ignorant or naive comes from my thinking this was a far more willful attempt at circumventing the spirit, if not the outright intent of the rules.
Raygan Swan: NASCAR is being fair with their penalties — well, until Kurt Busch was involved. I think his penalty for nearly taking out a crewman was a bit light.
Joe Menzer: I think NASCAR did the only thing NASCAR could do. If the penalty was less than what the 8 got, it would look like they are pandering to Hendrick. More; and it looks like they are trying to even the playing field.
Raygan Swan: Joe, I agree and it adds a little something to the competition — as artificial as it may be.
Dave Rodman: Huh? They ARE trying to even the play Read more:Track

Hendrick Cars Fail Inspection 2007-06-22 14:36:59 Infineon Raceway - Sonoma California
The 24 car of Jeff Gordon, and the 48 car of Jimmie Johnson have failed to pass inspection for Sundays road course race at Infineon Raceway. The cars did not clear the ’claw’ template test for the body of the COT (car of tomorrow), apparently failing at point 1 which is the left front fender. The cars have been disqualified for Fridays practice and qualification and relegated for the time being to the back of the field for Sundays race. The teams are working frantically to make these cars pass inspection and get back into the mix, while the speculation builds over the further consequences of this rules violation.
As was demonstrated in the earlier sanctions against the 8 car of Dale Earnhardt Jr, major violations of the rules in COT can result in suspensions (six weeks for the 8’s crew chief), fines ($100,000 for the 8), and point deductions (100 owner and 100 driver points in the case of the 8 car). Whether the fender shape violat Read more:Inspection

Nascar From Moonshine to Marketing 2007-07-24 18:49:00 In the first few decades of the 1900s, Daytona Beach became known as the place to set world land speed records. The beach became a mecca for racing enthusiasts and fifteen records were set on this beach between 1905 and 1935. Then, in 1936, the Bonneville Salt Flats became the premier place to host land speed record attempts, so the Daytona course began hosting car racing events. Drivers raced a 1.5 to 2 mile stretch of beach as one straightaway and beachfront highway A1A as the other.
Stock car racing had its origins in bootlegging during Prohibition. Bootleggers needed to distribute their illicit products, and they typically used small, fast vehicles to better evade the police. Many of the drivers would modify their cars for speed and handling, as well as increased cargo capacity, and some of them came to love the fast-paced driving down twisty mountain roads. One of the main ’strips’ in Knoxville, Tennessee, had its beginning as a mecca for aspiring bootlegging drivers.

Nascar Pioneer Junior Johnson 2007-07-27 16:10:00 Robert Glen Johnson
, Jr. (born June 28, 1931) in Wilkes County, North Carolina, known as Junior
Johnson, was a legendary moonshiner in the rural South who became one of the early superstars of NASCAR in the 1950s and 1960’s. He won 50 NASCAR races in his career before retiring in 1966. In the 1970s and 1980’s he became a highly successful NASCAR racing team owner; he sponsored such NASCAR champions as Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. He now produces a line of fried pork skins and country ham.
Tom Wolfe dubbed him ”the last American hero.” As a driver, Junior Johnson roared out of the North Carolina hill country and won over 50 stock car races, including the Daytona 500 and just about every other event of note. Since hanging up his helmet 20 years ago, Johnson, as a car owner, has watched his cars win nearly a hundred more Grand National races and taken Nascar’s Winston Cup in six of the past nine seasons.
Perhaps the only things that Johnson has wante Read more:Pioneer
The Brickyard 400 this Weekend 2007-07-27 00:26:00
When NASCAR president Bill France Jr. and Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George announced in February 1993 that NASCAR would race at Indianapolis, it sent a shockwave through the racing community. Many feared the tradition and integrity of the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be compromised. But the enormous popularity of NASCAR fueled the success of the race.
Originally named the Brickyard 400, the name was derived from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s nickname. The Speedway has been known as the “Brickyard” since 1909, when the surface of the 2 1/2-mile oval track consisted of 3.2 million bricks. A single strip of bricks, called the “yard of bricks,” remains at the track’s start/finish line.
NASCAR racing originated in the south in the 1930s, when the government decided to tax moonshine. Moonshine runners modified their cars to outrun the tax officials. When there were no government agents to outrun, they decided to outrun eac Read more:Weekend
Nascar Mortality 2007-07-26 21:50:00 The reality of death in racing is always somewhere lurking around the racetrack, particularly Daytona..
Between 1964 and 1969 there were 13 deaths in NASCAR events.
The introduction of the Super Speedway (Daytona in 1959, and Talladega in 1969 increased the speed, and the danger of stock car racing, the introduction of the restrictor plate, cut the speed, but encourages pack racing. In the long run, the safety of the fans (witness Bobby Allison’s destruction of the catch fence which brought the restrictor plate into racing). The drivers are more expendable than the fans.. deaths of spectators might mean the end of racing.
This is possibly a definitive list of deaths in NASCAR, the sanctioning body held its first race in 1949
The list includes non-racing deaths (ie Allen Kulwicki)

Junior on Pole for Pocono on Sunday 2007-08-03 23:14:00 Its that time of year, the silly season, the time when Stewart dominates and Junior
(sometimes) starts to rock… lets hope thats the case, the Hendrick domination in the first half of the season was droning on and on.
ESPN’s coverage at the Brickyard really sucked and I’m not the only one bored and annoyed by it:

Updated: 4:41 p.m. PT Aug 3, 2007
LONG POND, Pa. - Here’s another four-letter word stirring up trouble for Tony Stewart: ESPN.
Stewart is fed up with the sports network and he didn’t even need to curse to express his frustration with the way he believes some of its analysts have unfairly criticized him. Stewart was upset ESPN chided him for saying he was going to drink a case of beer to celebrate his July 15 win in Chicago, and one analyst even said later that Stewart was not a good role model.
Maybe it was the foul language.

Aggressive Montoya Not Making Friends 2007-08-18 17:41:57
By Seth Livingstone, USA TODAYBROOKLYN, Mich. - Last week’s late-race wreck at Watkins Glen that led to a shoving match between Kevin Harvick and Juan Pablo Montoya
on the track continued to produce opinions about Montoya’s aggressive style yesterday.
“He drives like he doesn’t know what he’s doing, to be honest with you,” said Harvick, who settled for 36th place after last week’s incident. “He can run fast but he’s all over the place and every week it seems like he runs into a different person. In four weeks it’s cost us a couple of hundred points and he shrugs it off like he doesn’t really care about anybody or anything.
“You make him mad and it’s: ‘Well I’ve got a five-year contract and I’ll just wreck you every week.’ It’s hard to talk to him and he doesn’t really respect anyone around him. … I’m not the only one with that opinion.”

Joe Gibbs Racing Goes to Toyota 2007-09-05 20:25:00
With the announcement that JGR will run Toyota
s next year, a new era has arrived in Nascar Nextel Cup racing.
The Toyota team that has fared the best in the current season is the Bill Davis team, the only one with a history before the 2007 season. Now Toyota has reached into the area of teams with a lot of success in the series, including championships with Bobby LaBonte and Tony Stewart. With the addition of Kyle Busch and the emergence of Denny Hamlin as a strong contender, Toyota could begin to acheive the stranglehold many originally predicted for them in the sport. Its similar to their history in american open wheel racing, where they began quietly and then immediately became a power to be reckoned with.
Nextel Cup (which will be Sprint Cup next year) is about to be ‘moved forward’ by one of the world’s largest automakers.
