Blind Study Finds Google Really Does Offer Best Results 2007-11-16 12:41:00 Posted by nullbitYesterday, we begun the Search Engine Experiment to discover which of the top search engines really offers the most relevant search results. With 5,000+ participants thus far, I thought now a good time to reveal the results as they currently stand: As of writing Google
offered the overall most relevant results for 41% of searches, Yahoo Search for 33%, and MSN Search trailing behind with only a 27% most relevant share. (Note: the image above is updated automatically, so you will probably be seeing newer figures than written). We plan to run the experiment indefinitely with the test results automatically updated every 15 minutes and available on this page. If you haven't already, take the blind test to find out which search engines' results you personally prefer. Lastly, despite best efforts at making the test fair, and prevent cheating, I remind you that we by no means guarantee the accuracy of these test results. Read more:Blind

10 Search Engine Marketing Myths Debunked 2007-11-16 12:35:00 By Kalena Jordan (c) 2007 In this article, I'm going to try and debunk a few myths floating around the Internet about what's required to get your site visible in search engines. Here goes: Myth 1 - You need to buy a domain with keywords in it I'm sure you've seen them, domains like: www.paris-hilton-pink-diamond-dog-collars.com. For some weird reason, webmasters seem to think that they need to have a keyword-stuffed domain to do well in the search engines, the more hyphens the better. Well it just isn't true. In fact, Google spam evangelist Matt Cutts is known for warning against using over-stuffed keyword domains. If you have a look at one of the last sentences of this post of his he talks about possibly attracting Google's attention with keyword-filled domains and gives an (excessive) example. Could he be hinting that using ultra-keyworded domains may trip a filter of some kind? I think so. Myth 2 - You need to submit your site to 1000 search engines Read more:Search

Under the thumb of Google's Jagger Update 2007-11-13 13:01:00 As many of our newsletter subscribers and visitors take a keen interest in search engine ranking changes, I thought I'd write a few words about Google
's latest update, nicknamed "Jagger
". Judging by the number of forum posts and articles on this update, it seems that Google changes haven't had such an effect on the minds of webmasters and site owners since the infamous "Florida update" in November 2003, which completely disrupted the search engine rankings of many a small business site at the time. Unlike many of the regular Google backlink and pagerank updates, every now and then there's a much more noticable change to Google's ranking algorithms - this could well be the case with Jagger. According to a well-regarded SEO Blog here: "The changes actually started with a string of back-link updates that began in early September and continued into the first week of October. Two weeks later, the information Google has in regards to links directed towards a specific website is likely d Read more:Update
“Google bombing” and what it can teach us about search engine optimisation 2007-11-13 12:58:00 Recently there was a new entry in the annals of Google
bombing. Many of you may remember the infamous example of how the U.S. White House biography of George W Bush was returned in top place for the search “miserable failure”. John Prescott MP has been the victim of similar efforts, although for the sake of those with sensitive souls, we won’t repeat the relevant search phrase here. So what does this tell us? It should tell us that search engine optimization (SEO) isn’t all about stuffing pages with keywords. We promise you, the phrase “miserable failure” does not appear in either the content or the meta tags for George Bush’s biography page. So how is it done? Google bombing involves creating links to a certain page using the target keyword in the link. This is a legitimate method to use to improve search engine rankings, even if it is a method abused by the Google-bombers. All too often, organizations pay too little attention to the role that incoming links can play in
SEO Duplicate Web Content Penalty Myth Exploded 2007-11-13 12:58:00 The "duplicate content penalty" myth is one of the biggest obstacles I face in getting web professionals to embrace reprint content. The myth is that search engines will penalise a site if much of its content is also on other websites. Clarification: there is a real duplicate content penalty for content that is duplicated with minor or no variation across the pages of a single site. There is also a "mirror" penalty for a site that is more or less substantially duplicating another single site. What I'm talking about here is the reprint of pages of content individually, rather than in a mass, on multiple sites. Another clarification: "penalty" is a loaded concept in SEO
. "Penalty
" means that search engines will punish a website for violations of the engine's terms of service. The punishment can mean making it less likely that the site will appear in search results. Punishment can also mean removal from the search engine's index of web pages ("de-indexing" or "delisting"). Ho Read more:Duplicate

What is the Google Dance? 2007-11-13 12:57:00 Google is so critical to most site’s search optimisation process that entire sites have been set up purely to analyse how often, and precisely how Google updates its search results each month or so. Although the precise algorithms and page ranking determinants remain secret, common trends have come to light which may well help search engine marketing types predict how Google will treat their projects on each update. Of course, there are no guarantees that Google will update your site, or even if it will find certain new pages within your site at each update, but even so, some things seem to be more certain than others. To put it simply: Each month, Google sets out to spider the entire web using a network of thousands of PC’s worldwide. The process starts usually every 30 days or so, with Google finding new sites and updating existing ones to present to the world at the next update. Alongside the main Google home page at www.google.com, there are several other online versions of the Read more:Google

The sparring and spin of the Google dance 2007-11-13 12:57:00 The Guardian reports on how unscrupulous firms are manipulating world's leading search engine... "It is known as the Google
dance, a delicate struggle between technicians at the world's largest internet search engine and the spin doctors who manipulate the worldwide web for commercial ends. Every day one group tries to prevent the other from abusing Google's index of more than 8bn web pages. The stakes are high. As Britain's online shoppers spend £150m every day in the run-up to Christmas, the value of a high ranking on Google is potentially worth millions to retailers, website owners and criminals alike. Web search has become the focus for a legion of marketers over the past decade, and their tactics - known as search engine optimisation (SEO) - are the basis of a multibillion pound worldwide industry. Most are legitimate businesses, but some so-called "black hat" SEOs use unethical strategies to boost their clients." Read the full article here.
Google Sandbox - new sites taking ages to get hits! 2007-11-13 12:55:00 A great deal has been written about the Google
"Sandbox
" theory - a much discussed topic on the excellent SEOChat forums. The theory is that Google indexes new sites within days, but does not assign new sites with ranking points until many months after they've gone live. This, presumably, is to deter spammers and others from gaining quick and easy search engine referrals. We have a good reason to believe there is a "sandbox". Bytestart first went live last July. We received maybe 10 or so referrals a day from Google.com and Google.co.uk for many months. However, after 8 months, these numbers suddenly rocketed to around 400+ per day. Touch wood, this number has stayed and grown for the last month... We've heard similar things from many other small business site owners, so there must be an element of truth in it. So, if any small business owners are wondering why Google hasn't been particularly kind to them in the early days, the "sandbox" could well be the cause. Possibly the best wa
How long since Google updated Pagerank? 2007-11-13 12:54:00 According to one of our favourite web marketing tools (Page Rank Update List History), Google
hasn't updates its 'Pagerank' or backlinks for 83 days. The Google Pagerank as displayed in the Google Toolbar, shows Google's judgement of the relative importance of any given web page. Pagerank is determined by a series complex algorithms, one of which is the number (and quality) of links pointing to that webpage from elsewhere on the web. Although the exact workings of Google are unknown, most webmasters know that their site will appear higher in the Google search engine if the site is deemed to be 'important'. At Bytestart, we receive dozens of emails each week asking for 'link exchanges'. In the old days, such exchanges were set up to exchange traffic between sites. These days, most of these requests are purely to increase Pagerank. And most of the sites who request links from us are simply terrible - virtually all the content has been written with the sole aim of climbing the sea
BMW banned by Google for dubious SEO techniques! 2007-11-13 12:54:00 With so many small businesses now reliant on Google
for a large chunk of their online traffic, the news that Google appears to have banned the German BMW site from its search results for dubious
search engine marketing techniques just goes to show how important it is not to push your luck too far when trying to get high ranking for your keywords. It also demonstrates the great power Google now holds over the web search market. BMW.de seems to have received what has become known as the Google "death sentence" - the complete removal of all pages on that domain from Google's search results. When a search engine spider crawled pages from the BMW.de site, it would see a number of keyword-rich sentences, however any visitor clicking onto such pages would receive a Javascript redirect to a glossy brochure page. This is a direct violation of Google's webmaster quality guidelines which specifically ban the use of deceptive search engine marketing techniqes. You can read more about this juicy Read more:SEO
Google manipulates search results: A boost for small business? 2007-11-13 12:51:00 By Glenn Murray, Advertising Copywriter,Website Copywriter, Article PR Specialist As more and more businesses strive for a top ten Google
ranking, it's becoming harder and harder to achieve. This is especially true for smaller businesses that simply don't have the budget for a big link popularity campaign. But hope may be just around the corner. If a top ten ranking for your primary keywords has been eluding you, then read on! Google manipulates the results
Google is trialing an 'enhancement' to the way it displays its results. Instead of showing the top ten results for the exact words you enter, in the trial Google suggests three related results that you might want to check out. Where does it display these suggestions? It shunts (or replaces) results 6, 7 and 8 !!! In this article, I refer to these results as 'intruders'. To see some 'intruder' results in action, search for "piggy bank". Results 6, 7 and 8 are actually 'intruder' results; they're the top three results for t
How not to get banned by Google Adsense and Adword 2007-11-13 12:46:00 Given that Google
now provides over 70% of all Internet search traffic, the last possible thing any small business site owner would want is to be banned from the Google index! With countless search engine marketing techniques being employed these days, and contrasting advice available all over the web, it is well worth ensuring that you do not 'over optimise' your site or use any techniques which will result in Google penalizing your site (see this story on poor old BMW!). Although the main rule would be to create a site which caters for your audience, provides quality content and contains meta information which is faithful to your site content, you should always optimise your site code to aid in your search ranking efforts, but this should be done in moderation, and in line with the following tips. Spam Never, ever spam. This involves sending a large amount of unsolicited mail via your domain mail server. Although the legality of mass mailing is a grey area, sites which do this dese Read more:Adsense

Social Media Marketing: The New SEO? 2007-11-13 12:46:00 Fall is the time of year when we start to look at where search marketing is heading. Looking at the latest search marketing conference agendas, articles, and online news in the SEM space, it certainly appears that social media marketing and networking are the wave of the future. To a certain extent, they are. Social
media, and social networking in particular, create a back-and-forth conversation with your target audience, giving you the ability to virally market your website through the "buzz" that can be created. When something interesting, cool, or unique is being talked about in "all the right places," it can certainly provide a boost in website traffic. We search marketers as a group hang out in numerous online and offline communities where it's easy to promote our own products and services, yet I can't help wondering if our view of Web marketing is skewed because of this. Are potential B2B clients and even B2C customers spending time at Digg? Do they attend SEM conferences in ord Read more:SEO
