declawing.. Rip out your nails and amputate the tips of your fingers 2007-07-15 21:53:31 Am I sounding like a bleeding heart “humaniac”.. ?
If you MUST have a de-clawed cat, get one that has been dumped at he pound.. maybe dumped because many de-claws poop on soft surfaces.
Why? When the weather changes or it’s cold, the amputated area can hurt.. like when you have broken a bone and you have pain in cold or wet weather.. many of you are saying “we never had a problem”.. you are lucky..
Take a little survey. When someone complains that their cat is not using the litter pan.. ask if it is urinating in the pan and deficating outside the pan.. and on a soft surface like a pillow…. then ask if the cat is a de-claw.. I figured this out the 7 years that I worked for a very large animal hospital in Los Angeles..
Cats claw (scratch) because they are marking.. with the claw marks and the glands on their pads.. So that in the wild they can mark their domain and maybe find their way home..
also:
It sharpens their claws.
It exercises their claw m Read more:nails
Podcast #6 - No Biting Allowed! 2007-07-13 09:51:54 In my opinion.. a dog should NEVER bite.. That old adage that ”the dog bite the child because he touched the dog while it was eating” doesn’t cut it.
If you are starting with a puppy, this is an easy fix.. Get you hands in the dish with the food as you feed.. Do some hand feeding.. If your hand and fingers are in their mouth with the food, they will not easily be able to bite.
With an older dog that is already growling and biting, it may be more difficult.. Be an “alpha dog” and you will be able to correct the problem.. Listen to the podcast for me details..

Podcast #5 - Teeth Cleaning in Cats and Dogs 2007-07-11 09:49:26 Be your own dentist to your cats and dogs..
From day one, handle your pet.. fingers in ears, in mouth, between toes, run fingers over the teeth and gum line..
Start with pet store or vet purchased tooth brush or kit.. better yet, let your thumb nail do the job.. or a square of gauze.
I use my thumb nail to massage the gum line.. If you do this on a regular basis, you will prevent tartar build up and expensive vet visits and bad breath..
I will try to do a short video and post..
FYI.. notice that the pet foods and biscuits that CLAIM to prevent tartar.. NEVER work!

Podcast #4 - Firework Proof your Dog 2007-07-07 09:47:29 Here is the theory.. If your dog was very young on its first 4th of July, or thunder storm season etc.. It should be okay with loud noises in the future.. consider playing loud sound effects (hunters!!!!! shot guns over the puppies heads) while the pup is very young.. hen all else fails, start the dog on Valium July 3 through the 5th.. That’s usually when the fireworks are going off.. even in the distance..

So.. you have a new dog.. you take it to the vet and it has a bad experience with shots etc.. from now on the pup may fear the vet…
New plan.. Have the first set of shots given at a clinic or a different vet.. start taking tiny day trips to you regular vet without a doctor’s visit.. make it a fun time.. from now on it should be a good experience..

WHAT could be wrong with Shadow? The green-eyed, long-haired cat had adapted well to his Santa Monica home. There was a carpeted cat tree in the living room for his climbing pleasure. He appeared to have reached an understanding about sharing the house with the other resident feline.
Then one day his owners saw wet spots around the house: Shadow was urine-spraying. The door was a favorite target. So was the side of the sofa. And a corner wall of the living room.
Not to be confused with eschewing the litter pan, spraying is a ritual of te Read more:Prozac
MOLD testing with dogs… 2007-08-09 10:50:13 Sponsored Post:
mold testing with dogs
Mold can be a dangerous health risk when one is exposed to its invisible spores and many people often live in a moldy environment, often unknown to them.
But there is now a new way to find the hidden mold in your home; it’s named “Hunter.” Hunter is a 2-year-old lab mix that was rescued from a Florida canine shelter and he’s got a nose for mold. Hunter is one of 80 dogs that are trained for thousands of hours to sniff out what we often can’t see: mold.

Submissive Urinating in Dogs 2007-08-08 17:24:36 A LIBERATED LINK:
Many people are familiar with what is defined as the “submissive urinator”; the dog that urinates all over the floor, you the owner, and your guests, as soon as it becomes excited, aroused, or intimidated. It can be a frustrating and embarrassing problem, but fortunately is usually quite easily corrected. Puppies, especially shy, timid and oversensitive ones are the likely candidates for submissive urination, but it is not uncommon to see this problem persist into adulthood. There tends to be more females with this problem as well. Dog owners who are dominant and strict tend also to encourage a submissive relationship with their dog.
Common situations where dogs get excited or fearful, and urinate are:
-overaffectionate greetings
-when you arrive home
-guests entering your home
-arguments between people
-scolding
-loud noises
In order to understand this behavior, you must understand the language of dominance and submissiveness. Young puppies learn this fr Read more:Submissive
Spaying/Neutering… The facts, nothing but the facts! 2007-08-11 03:01:11 What Do the Terms "Spaying" and "Neutering"Mean?
"Spaying" and "neutering" are surgical procedures used to prevent pets from reproducing. In a female animal, "spaying" consists of removing the uterus and ovaries. The technical term is ovario-hysterectomy. For a male animal, "neutering" involves the removal of the testicles, and this is known as castration.
Does It Hurt?
As the surgery is done under a general anaesthetic it is painless. The operation for both males and for females is straightforward and low risk. Recovery is usually uneventful. The worst your pet might experience is some discomfort for a short time after the operation.
When Should It Be Done?
The usual recommendation is at 6 to 7 months for both cats and dogs. Your veterinarian should be consulted to determine the best time for your pet.
Help Control Pet Overpopulation
Too many cats and dogs are euthanized annually or suffer as strays. The number of unwanted pets keeps growing. Spaying/neuterin Read more:facts

SNAIL BAIT KILLS dogs.. please pass on 2007-08-12 13:04:44 I received this email from a friend yesterday.. I do mentin snail bait poisoning in my podcast about dngers in you home.. please pass this on and help save a life..
Last Saturday, my friends dog died. He was a beautiful 1 year-old chocolate lab named Coco. He was so sweet and would come down and visit us during the day. The way he died was horrible and I wanted to get the word out to everyone I knew so that this doesn’t happen to other dogs.
At 12:00 noon on Saturday, he ate some snail bait and by 6:00 he was dead. They came home and found him in a pool of excrement as he gasped his last breath. He suffered terribly and alone in their yard while they were out. Most people don’t know that snail bait is coated with oats and molasses and is attractive to dogs. My friends did not know this when they bought it. Later they realized there was a warning on the box, but with all the text on the box they missed it.
They NEVER would have bought something to put in their garden

How to find a lost pet.. “keep looking” 2007-08-29 11:51:33 re-print: Benedict Canyon Newsletter
by Jan Marlyn Reesman 9-06
The canyon is filled with "LOST PET" signs. We all know many of these missing small dogs and cats may never show up again. The fate of "the canyon". However you should not stop searching. Cats have been found weeks after they go missing. Since the conception of the micro-chip, dogs have been returned home long after their replacement has arrived.
When a pet goes missing it is vital to act fast and to never stop the search. Grab a powerful flashlight even during daylight hours, we learned this from watching "CSI". Search dark spaces. A frightened or injured cat will hide in dark spaces and will not come to you when called. An injured dog may also.
Immediately search your property thoroughly. Small dogs and cats can get into some incredibly strange places. Look in EVERY nook and cranny. Don’t assume that your pet would never crawl into a tiny space. Especially cats.. felines are a curious group. Look behi Read more:ldquo

Litter Box Problems 2007-08-28 21:00:36

Box Problems.
Litter Box Problems… http://thecattherapist.com/
You just don’t get it! Every cat you’ve ever had was fastidious in his litter box habits. But your present cat is problem. Sometimes he’ll use the box religiously and then suddenly he’ll start to leave puddles near the box, in the hallway, on the sofa, or sometimes on the bed.
How to React to a Litter Box “Incident”
Your cat has had an incident, and you’re miffed. Sure, you understand why and what you do. But what can you say so you’ll release your frustration and not provoke him to do it again? You realize he’s already upset and he’ll eventually recover. Help!
You can express your feelings by saying, “Oh no, you did it again!” You can even scream into a pillow. But it’s important that he know you’re on his side. So tell him he’s getting bet
Shake your can.. at your dog to stop jumping or excessive barking.. 2007-08-27 11:07:20 I had clients that have “shake cans” on the sofa (to keep the dog off ), hidden under pillows and outside the door for visitors to shake as they enter the home to prevent jumping.. be sure to use a command with the shake of the can so that you will eventually be able to go sans can..
SHAKE CAN
This is a wonderful NON physical & very effective CORRECTION tool. Take a cola can, put 10 pennies, bolts, screws, nails, etc.in the can. I really like metal on metal rather than stones or rocks. Put duct tape over the opening to prevent items from flying out.
When your dog engages in a behavior you wish to stop, SHAKE the can ONCE. This is once UP/DOWN. You do not shake, shake, shake the can. If you do, the dog will quickly desensitize to the startle/stop effect of the sudden, unpleasant sound.
When you use the shake can on an undesirable behavior, your dog will startle/stop the behavior & look around for the offending NOISE. Use this break in the behavior to give them t Read more:Shake

The fragile reconciliation between Backstreet Boy Nick Carter and his mother Jane is definitely off, after Jane dumped Nick’s dog Layla at a North Tampa animal shelter earlier this week — without Nick’s knowledge or permission. Doggin’!
Nick asked his mother to babysit for pit bull mix Layla, while he geared up for his upcoming reunion tour with Backstreet Boys. He was even paying her for the dog’s upkeep, but apparently, Jane had no interest in holding up her end of the bargain.
Ranelle Black, who rescued the pit bull from an L.A. County animal shelter and let Nick adopt the pup in March 2006, said she received a call from the Florida shelter on Mon Read more:Paris Hilton
