What is in Reliance Pack?
2007-07-15 05:08:00
Reliance has given returns to shareholders. After all there are so many companies today, which will not exist tomorrow, but Reliance will be around here tomorrow. Even they have dragged the stock market (see the chart and data). Reliance is good investment, provided one invests them at low valuations. Mukesh has two listed companies RIL and RPL. Anil has 4 listed companies with him and he has chosen 1 of them – R Capital to play with investments, chosen R Energy to invest in huge futuristic projects (Mumbai Metro), Adlabs to play in Media/Entertainment - R Com may be for any global ambitions. View on Reliance Group Cos - 1. RIL - Doing exceedingly well - Refining, Petrochemical and Exploration/Production and Retail. But RIL is now in investment phase (planned acquisitions, retail expansions will such billions of dollars of capital). Also company is very heavily priced, at nearly 40 billion Dollars in Market Cap (which is big even by international standards). So RIL will be a m

The Sensex story: 1000 to 15000
2007-07-13 12:17:00
Despite weak global cues, indian stocks were in great demand, especially auto, pharma, IT and metals stocks. On Friday, this lifted the Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark 30-share Sensex past the magical 15,000-mark. (See below for the timeline). The unprecedented Bull Run started on May 6, 2003 when the Sensex was at 3,001.21 level. In took just 67 trading sessions to cross the 4,000-mark and touch 4,026.27 points on August 19, 2003. The rally continued and the index gained another 1,000 points in 54 trading sessions to post 5,068.66 points on November 3, 2003. Thereafter, it pierced through the 6,000 mark on January 2, 2004 in another 43 trading sessions. The market then seemed to pause for breath as it took a whopping 370 trading sessions to cross the 7,000 mark, at 7001.55 on June 20, 2005. From 7,000-mark, the sentiment turned distinctly firm following good liquidity that played a significant role to determine the market direction and Sensex crossed 8,0

Indian Investment Gurus - Rakesh Jhunjhunwala & Radha Kishan Damani
2007-07-04 02:14:00
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala started with a meagre Rs 10,000 somewhere in 1985 and with some trading profit was on a leverage capital of Rs 10 lacs in a few months now if you compound that Rs 10 lacs at 57% for 22 years, You do get to the figure of Rs 2250 crores. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is one example of compounding. Basically he came out unhurt both in 1992 (Harshad Mehta) and in 2000 (ketan pareikh). Now avoiding the biggest mistakes is one of the ingredients to creating this ocean of wealth. But he had bet very aggressively in 1989 or thereabouts he was the only person long on the markets and I think Madhu Dandvate was to present the budget and the whole market was short and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala the only lone long standing bull! he minted. I heard that In 1992 he was among the few who could time Harshad Mehta's bubble to perfection. The other being Radha Kishan Damani - of Bright Star investment. So while the whole nation bled and lost these two investors minted. Radha Kishanji lost a fai

Correction is near. Book profit and be ready with cash for fresh buying. I am exiting all my short term stocks, where I am earning 10-15%. Chances of correction are more now -Reason:Two Big IPOs DLF and ICICI Bank is going to list in near future.High Bank interest rate (Liquidity crunch)Rupee appreciation is impacting IT and other exporter's earning (Only big exporters can survive).Low sales of retail and commercial vehicles. (Auto stocks hitting 52 weeks low) Cement stocks not good due to Govt. export ban.Infy and other IT stocks first quarter results would be coming this month, if they are not as expected by market, then market will react negatively. IT stocks are already hitting bottom if they further loose ground then we would see blood bath. Now only neutral stocks like Reliance capital, RIL can move the sensex up but how much?I would come up with my stock list and their price band in which you would enter after correction.“YOU SHOULE NOT BE IN THE MARKET ALL THE TIME. How to build a mutual fund portfolio?
2007-06-27 06:31:00
One of the most common questions in front of every mutual fund investor. Some useful suggestions from PersonalFN.com to clear the air: http://www.personalfn.com/detail.asp?date=5/8/2007&story=1 This article was written by Personalfn for Business India, and was carried in its May 6, 2007 issue with the title, "Building a mutual fund portfolio". The original draft, in its entirety, has been retained here. With new fund offers (NFOs) becoming the order of the day (there are dozens launched every month) in the mutual fund industry, investors often find themselves stumped while evaluating whether a particular fund should be a part of their portfolio. Add to this the fact that most of the NFOs fail to offer anything significantly different from existing mutual funds. This confuses the investor even further, since he is forever agonising on whether the NFO is truly a great investment opportunity as the advertisement often claims. At Personalfn, we are flooded with queries from inv

Are Markets Really Risky?
2007-06-26 01:16:00
There was an American comedian who, whenever someone would ask him, "How's your wife?" would reply, "Compared to what"? The answer to today's big question is the same. Is equity investing too risky for the retail investors? Well, compared to what? The crucial issue is not whether the investor is retail or wholesale, but whether the investments are for the long- or the short-term and what kind of skills and presence of mind does he or she bring to the actual choice of investments. Practically speaking, risk in the stock markets is a function of time. The longer the timeframe over which you invest, the lower the risk. Today, all this talk of the 'retail investors' losing money in the markets appears to be about individuals who normally do not invest in the markets but have perhaps come into the markets in recent months hoping for some quick gains. There are many such investors and it's possible that they will lose money. Nothing should be done about this. Such 'investors', retai

The ABC of financial planning
2007-06-26 01:09:00
If the future always went according to plan, financial planning would be a one-time exercise. But life throws a few curves now and then. We all have dreams! For buying a new car, that dream house, getting their children married in style, or simply retiring early. All these are also significant financial decisions. Astute long-term planning may make life financially secure, while inadequate or misguided planning could turn it awry. The process of meeting your life's goals, through prudent management of finances is what is often referred to as `financial planning'. Financial planning provides direction and meaning to your financial decisions. It allows you to understand how each financial decision can affect other areas of your finances. For example, buying a particular investment product might delay your retirement significantly. By viewing each financial decision as part of a whole, you can consider its short- and long-term effects on your life goals. You can also adapt more eas

Stock Market - sirf bandar hee bandar
2007-06-25 04:22:00
Stock Market Once upon a time in a village a man appeared who announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys at 10 rupees each. The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys available went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at 10 rupees and as supply started to diminish and villagers started to stop their effort he announced that now he would buy each monkey at 20 rupees. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching moneys again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to 25 and the supply of monkeys became so that it was an effort to even see a monkey let alone catch it. The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at 50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business his assistant would now buy on behalf of the man. In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers "Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the
