victoria's secret fashion show
2007-12-03 21:04:00
If you have nothing else better to do tomorrow night, Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is on CBS. Watch it for fun. It'll definitely be entertaining.Just don't try to get lingerie ideas from it, unless you think you could wear this under a t-shirt:Or that you could tuck this inside your jeans:But if you already own a pair of Victoria's famous fluffy wings, this year you must get their newest useless accessory: the sparkling peacock tail!Or this seasonal piece, a great incentive for your husband/boyfriend/cute neighbor to help you decorate the Christmas tree. And don't miss Heidi sharing with us her tips to get Seal in the mood: music and specific directions.Man, if I had to spell it out like that... I don't think I would be interested anymore...But who am I kidding, the only reason worth watching the show is to see some other girls...what was their name again...?The Spice Girls!Except now they all look so different and they are all dressed up, and it's hard to remember (distinguish

wish list - coach bangles
2007-11-30 22:42:00
I've already posted about bangles this week, and here I am looking at more bangles today... I guess I will have to put them on my wish list. The only problem is that I can't pick one out of all of these:This one is small and simple. I love it in gold, but it also comes in many different colors, and if I had about $300 to throw away on bangles I would do this with it:Instead of stacking, I could go with something chunkier, like this one:Or maybe find the middle ground and buy this one:You can find all these bangles at Coach.com

gifts for teens
2007-12-16 19:14:00
Being a "bit" past my teenager years, and not having any close teenagers relative/friends, I must admit I am a bit out of touch with which fashion items are hot in the high-school scene.Or at least I was.I did a little research, and asked a few mothers, and here is a list of gifts that should make you the "cool" aunt or the "favorite" grandma (I'm thinking if you are the mother, you already "know" what they want).Ugg Boots $239I personally don't like Uggs, to me the name says it all. But, kids (and some adults too, unfortunately) are very much into these boots. Now, the prices are very expensive, but the good news is that most kids are liking a similar boot in a cheaper brand:Emu Boots $75The next item is something I adore as well: an Abercrombie Fleece Sweater.Abercrombie Lesley $60I actually own this exact sweater and what I love about the brand is the softness of their materials. Just keep in mind that their sizing is all out of whack. For example, I need at least a size large

juicy couture gift ideas
2007-12-15 09:20:00
I know I've abused Juicy Couture in the past, and I am sure I will again sometime in the future, but since this is the season to be "nice", I will put aside my poisoned pen and show you some adorable items from their collection. Great gift ideas , too.Their bags are not everyday bags, at least not the ones I will show you here, but they are very cute and different from the "usual" bags out there. Then again, if you give one of these handbags to a teenager, it will definitely become her every day bag...Daydreamer Velour Bag $195Baby Fluffy Velour Bag $185Baby Fluffy Ring Bling Bag $185Velour is still king in their accessories as well.Cosmetic Organizer $115Small Zip-Top Pouch $45And for a different taste of Juicy, how about giving a pretty pink hat?Preppy Couture Hat $55Or a candy pink pair of mittens?Live for Sugar Mittens $65Rhinestone Compact Umbrella $55I guess this brand is not so bad after all... One thing is for sure, as long as they keep using pink in their collections,

ZenTrend's iStyler
2007-12-13 13:54:00
If you still have not visited ZenTrend's new website... well, what are you waiting for?Aren't you curious to check out their iStyler concept?Don't you want to have a say about what clothes you would like to see sold in stores? Don't you want to see fresh new designs?Like this elegant silk satin dress with an interesting chiffon wrap?Your vote will decide if this dress will ever be manufactured! And this is just one of many designs...How about this one?I really like the color, actually, I love the color. I think this is such a young and flirty set.I would love to try it on, except it doesn't exist yet!But that can be remedied by voting for it. Hint. Hint.I am not too sure about the belt, I might wear it without it... By now, if you read my blog, you must have figured out that this one is my favorite. There is something about the color combination that makes me feel good just looking at it. I love the lavender and the purple mixed with the lime green. It gives it a "sunny place" flav

i've found my party dress!!!
2007-12-11 23:27:00
Unfortunately I can't show it to you, just yet...My company's party is this coming Friday, and since I am also the organizer, you have to understand my pressure of looking fabulous!Well, yesterday was Tuesday and I figured I couldn't wait any longer, because even though I felt that with all the stores in my neighborhood I had to find something, I started getting cold feet, and I wanted to leave myself enough time to come up with a second plan, and trip to a different part of town, in case I found nothing. If you remember, in a previous post I mentioned how there was a red dress in a window calling my name. That store was my first stop. And the dress was on sale! Except that even after the sale, the dress was way over my budget. Adieu pretty red dress! So I started walking towards the second store, my "special" store, the one that I actually was pretty sure about finding something at.But I had to make another stop first, past this second store, to buy cat food, and, on the way, I passe

cherish your inner child
2007-12-10 20:43:00
I think that no matter how old we get, we will always be kids at heart.I've asked so many "older" people and they all tell me that they feel way younger than they really are. They know their bodies are different, aged if you will, but their spirits are not much different than when they were 16 or 20 years old.Me too! I am in my, sigh, thirties but I still feel the same way I did when I was 16.That is probably one of the causes why you see very old ladies, and I mean in their 70s or 80s, dressing up as if they were still 40 years old, wearing lots of makeup that doesn't work like it used to, still trying to look like they did, because they probably still "feel" 40 or even younger. But I'll save this for another post. This post is about getting in touch with our inner child , that little girl that used to love playing with Barbies and the Smurfs, the little girl still inside us that loves the color pink and that, if she could, she would use it to decorate her whole house, that little gi

holiday style
2007-12-23 20:30:00
I've already said this before: style does not start and end with the clothes you wear. It's not about matching your handbag to your outfit. And it's not about owning as many pairs of shoes as you can afford.Style is more than that.Style is how you present yourself, how you carry yourself around other people. Your style shows in the confidence you exude when you walk into a room full of people. And I don't mean you need to act as if you were the latest celebrity, not at all. Just the opposite, actually. The more comfortable you are with yourself, the more natural you will act, the more your confidence will reveal itself naturally. This time of the year, with parties and holiday dinners, you will have a lot of occasions to show off your style, or work on creating a new one, or fine tune your current one.I am not saying that style is something you can change as frequently as you change your bath towels, no, what I am saying is that style is not a static sense of being. It is something t

$50 gift certificate to bruno jamais restaurant
2007-12-20 10:21:00
One thing you might not know about me is that I love dining out, and right after shopping advice, my friends know that I am also the right person to go to for New York restaurant s tips and suggestions. So when I was given the opportunity to give away to my readers a prize of a $50 certificate to a New York restaurant, I was happy! :)The restaurant is Bruno Jamais, located in the Upper East Side. And while I have to admit that I have never personally dined there, it didn't take much to convince me that Mr. Jamais must know what he's doing. His resume lists him as the Maitre D at the famed Restaurant Daniel for 10 years. Enough said.Daniel is one of my favorite restaurants, if not the favorite restaurant in New York. And working so closely with Daniel Boulud for 10 years will definitely help into shaping you into a great restaurateur. With the management in the right hands, the next most important thing is the food, of course!Well, it looks like Bruno Jamais also has the right chef.In fa

reader's question: winter fashion in new york
2007-12-18 21:06:00
Hello NY $pender, I am hoping you can offer me some winter fashion assistance. I stumbled across your blog while searching what types of boots, sweater, coats, etc to wear while in New York. My sister and I will be visiting New York in January to celebrate her 30th birthday. We are from California and I am typically complaining when the weather drops in to the low 50. I keep hearing that I should go for warmth rather than fashion and that I should stay away from high heel boots. Do most New Yorkers wear high heel boots during winter? What is the hot fashion trend at the moment in New York? Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sandra Fremont, CAHi Sandra,One thing that's great about New York is that you can wear anything you want, and nobody will care. With that said, girls like us like to care, and look fashionable even in inclement weather, if possible.I absolutely wear my high heel boots all winter long. I have many pairs, and I wear them all. Except in

moncler down jackets and coats
2007-12-17 19:58:00
From a ski and recreation sports clothing line in the 70s, Moncler became the uniform and the most sought-after, not to mention most expensive item, of the young Italian fashion craze of the 80s.The first paninari (that's how the people that followed this specific fashion were called) started appearing around 1983, in Milan, and they were all about wearing only the best (and most expensive) brands on the market.Soon enough all the kids in Italy wanted, amongst many other brands, Timberland Boots, Levi's Jeans, and Moncler Down Jackets.Of course, I couldn't resist the call of fashion, and at 14 years old I was able to convince my father to buy me a pair of Timberland shoes that were so expensive (at least for the small town I was from) that all my neighbors knew about them. But I never got my hands on a Moncler down jacket. It was just way too expensive! I bought the Levi's, the Naj-Oleari, the Best Company... but the Moncler escaped me.And when in the late 80s, the paninari started

spring trend report?
2008-03-11 21:37:00
Some food for thought: when shopping for this Spring, or for any other upcoming season for that matter, don't worry too much about the "trends".Trends are there to guide you, if you need ideas, but always take into account where you are getting the "trends" information from.Online, for example, each store will always stir you towards the stuff it sells, of course.Take a look:This are Saks' TrendsThese are Neiman Marcus' Trends:These are Bloomingdales's Trends:These are H&M's Trends:These are Macy's Trends:What all these trends have in common?Very little (exactly my point...)Coming soon... I would like to introduce a new contributor to NY Spender... Bullitt. :)You have already met him here, and after some months spent as an intern (laying on my desk and resting his tail right on my keyboard, chasing the cursor on the monitor, jumping up in the air every time the printer goes on...) and begging for his own column, I decided to give him a chance. To balance the Spender, Bullitt has figured he wants to be more on the frugal side, so without further ado, I present to you "Bullitt's Deals".Hello. I'm Bullitt.I am very happy to be here with you today, and I hope you will enjoy my new column.I am not going to waste much of your time nor of mine (I will need to go take a nap soon, so that I can be up at 3 AM and wake up the Spendthrift... ahem... the NY Spender by affectionately bit

island cowgirl jewelry
2008-03-06 12:07:00
Island Cowgirl is a jewelry line by Heather Kraty.Even if originally from the New York area, the sun, the beach and the waves were the things always close to Heather's heart. So much so, that she began selling her jewelry on the beach in the Caribbeans.I own a pair of Island Cowgirl earrings. And while I've gotten compliments on how pretty and original they are, those were never the only reasons why I first liked the earrings and the entire line. There was something different about it… but I couldn’t tell if it was the cute hearts imprinted on the metal, the rugged yet chic shapes or the leather/silver mixes.Only after reading Heather’s bio it all finally made sense to me: it was her free spirit and her love for the simple things in life that I could also feel imprinted on each piece,

will you still wear it tomorrow?
2008-03-04 18:55:00
I reeeeally like this Prada Stripes Multicolor handbag.I like it because it's colorful. I like it because it has a very peculiar and different shape. And I like it even though I can't afford it at 750 Euros ($1,150!).But even if I could afford it, I wouldn't buy it, and for the very same reasons why I do like this bag:The colors and the shape that make it very interesting and unique are also what make it that much more datable. The same details that make you jump with excitement the first time around, are the ones that could turn you off the most just one year later!Think of the Cherry Blossom line by Louis Vuitton. Back then it looked so adorable. Today it just looks "old".And the Scribble by Coach now looks like a kindergarten line! So, unless you can afford to change designer handbags wit

stripper's scent
2008-03-03 16:06:00
Ok, this is going to sound strange to some of you, but I ask you to keep an open mind while reading it.I love perfumes and I am always smelling new ones, revisiting old ones and trying new and different combinations. If I like a scent on another woman, I might ask her for the name of her perfume. This is where the story gets weird…Last year, I went to a strip club with a friend, to provide him with temporary relief from a bad break-up (ha!), and the one thing that stuck with me was the way these girls smelled: a first one sat down to drink with us, and her perfume smelled sooo good, but like nothing I had ever smelled before. A second one stopped by to say hello, and while her perfume was not quite as interesting as the one I smelled on that first girl, it was again something that left you

an old favorite: superga
2008-03-01 09:57:00
I am not one of those girls that's always on high heels. I do like to wear sneakers when I know I am going to do a lot of walking (for a day at the mall, for example).I have to admit, though, that sneakers are not very fashionable, and it's hard to pick anything glamorous from a Lady Foot Locker's wall. Nike and New Balance are comfortable but nowhere near "chic". And I don't like Converse at all. So my dilemma got me thinking and researching... and as it usually happens, I end up back at my roots.Growing up in Italy, I had one favorite brand of sneakers, Superga, and pretty much every Italian girl owned at least a pair or two. They came in all different colors, and that made you want to go back to the store and buy another pair. Back then, girls used to match the Supergas to the t-shirt th
