Canada has Blog Link Love Too! 2007-07-14 23:51:55 Thank you again for everyone’s kind support this past week! Without you, this blog is worth nothing so I can’t show my appreciation enough (even if I’m on vacation in Canada
)!
Here are some posts from our top contributors and posts I liked this week:
Jenn from Frugal Upstate talked about whether it is worth it to buy sunscreen that is more convenient, so read her article and see what she decided!
Misti from Family Savings illustrates her life after watching the Pursuit of Happiness.
Harry Potter has a (you guessed it) blog on the book. It is actually written in another language but this post has a very cute dog trying to open the front page!
Ann from Homesick for Home Business has an article which talks about IRS requiring sites like eBay to collect social security numbers! This will potentially change the service all together as many people do not report their taxes and transactions right now. It would be interesting to see how the eBay community reacts to t
Money Thoughts with Passport Renewal 2007-07-14 11:03:29 Greetings from Canada! I have only been here for less than 24 hours and today was passport renewal day so I will share with you everything personal finance related with this experience.
First of all, let me just say that renewing my passport is very complicated! I had to fly back to Canada to do this since I could not get it done in an expedited manner through the mail. Long story short, Canada I went! Early morning today, after the long wait and line up, I found out that a few items needed to be corrected before my application can be processed further.
Issue 1 – Proof of Travel
In order to get an expedited service, I needed written proof of my travel schedule which I did not bring with me. To add to the trouble, it was rush hour and I was about 25 miles away from my house where my itinerary is located.
My parents wanted to drive home to get it, but I told them that it’s easier, cheaper and faster to find a store that has internet access and print service. We ended up going to a ne Read more:Money

How I Save Money in Air Travel 2007-07-13 10:29:13 I’m in the airport on my way to Canada right now. While I’m bored, I figured that I should write to you about some of the ways you can save money in the airport since everything is more expensive inside than out.
Airline Tickets
I mainly use Expedia because of its flexibility in combining flights from different carriers. For example, I flew from Los Angeles to New York for a couple night stay on American Airlines, then to Canada on Delta. On the way back, I’m flying from Canada to Texas on an Air Canada flight, then a few days later to Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines. This way, I end up in 3 different cities for the price of 2.
The main money saving technique is exploiting the use of the online reservation services. Whether it is Expedia or Priceline, there is an option to try out your many different routes without driving someone and yourself crazy over the phone. You can ultimately plan and pick the best route if you are a little flexible with the dates and times of depa Read more:Money

Do It Yourself Car Wash For The Frugal 2007-07-12 10:30:59 $0.75 is not bad huh?
Hmm… a little dirty isn’t it?
This is the car wash place that let you do it yourself
There are so many settings that you can use your money. What we use is just soap, water, and spot free rinse. We found that the main reason why people use much more money with these machines is because they would keep it on the soap setting and then keeping feeding the machine money while they wipe their car. We just turn it to the soap for 30 seconds, and then we would turn it off and wipe the car with the soap that is already on the car. We find that you really don’t need that much soap to make the car clean, which at the end of the day saves us lots of money since these machines are on a pay for time basis.
After the Spot free rinse, the car is shining clean.
For those that are going to hand car washes with the excuse that you don’t own a house and do not have access to a water hose, try this for $0.75 from now on.

Libraries Are Not As Bad As You Think 2007-07-11 10:30:10 For many of us, the library is not a place we remember anymore. If I ask my friends right now about it, they would not even know where one is located. Some would not be able to guarantee that one even exists! I conducted a survey at the front door of the grocery store where a library was located within walking distance and got the following results.
Last Time You Went to The Library
Within the last 12 months: 15.7%
Within the last 5 years but longer than 12 months: 7.8%
Longer than 5 years: 76.5%
Primary Reason For Going To Library
Study: 21.6%
Nothing else to do: 9.8%
Regular event in my schedule: 15.7%
Don’t currently go to the library: 52.9%
Note that everyone who declined to comment is not included because it would have skewed the results as most people did not want to take the survey.
As you can see from the above, most people have not been to the library for the last 5 years. Some of the people actually do not like libraries because it always reminds me of their study days Read more:Libraries
Say What You Do and Do What You Say 2007-07-10 10:30:26 Last week, I posted an article that talked about how much food we waste and that my fiancee and I always cook too much (or take too much left overs home when I’m over other people’s house). I also promised that I will refuse to take some food home if there were too many and that I will try to cook less.
I wanted to report back that I went to my uncle’s house last Sunday and had really good food! As usual, they had many dishes prepared but I suggested that we should leave some in the fridge because we couldn’t eat all of it which they accepted.
We still ended up with leftovers, but I’m happy to say that I politely asked for a reduced portions to take home since I will be travelling to New York, Canada and Texas the next 2 weeks and would not have time to finish them all.
We ended up taking home some food, but we finished it last night (Monday) already as opposed to the usual which is throwing them away. It was very tempting to take the delicious foo
Apple’s iPhone and Paris Hilton Inpire Us To Be Rich 2007-07-09 10:30:48 I was thinking about Apple
’s iPhone
when I was driving home yesterday. I became obsessed with the little gadget ever since I saw my blog on the iPhone. I love it so much that every time Apple’s commercial is on TV, my fiancée will try to cover my eyes and ears. I thought to myself some of the reasons why I like the $499 cell phone so much, which are almost all marketing related. This thought quickly moved onto what I can learn from Apple to help make myself rich. The first thing that came to mind afterwards was my income. Let’s face it, not everyone who does the same job earns the same salary. Let’s discuss how Apple charges $499 for a cell phone while other company sells theirs for $49 and how that relates to us.

Avoid Credit Card Traps 2007-07-08 11:28:29 Laura Rowley from Yahoo Finance wrote a great article titled Five Credit Card Traps
to Avoid
. Here are some quotes from the article along how we need to intreprete it.
…more than 9 in 10 Americans don’t know how long it would take to pay off their credit card bill if they made only the minimum payments.
I am actually one of these people and I bet most of us are on the same boat. The actual answer is 7 to 8 years which is very long. The total amount of payment after 8 years is probably very frightening!
There is a need for everyone to understand that the minimum balance due does not mean “the only charge I need to worry about”. Everyone needs to be responsible with their credit cards. If we cannot pay it in full, we probably should not use it.
…credit card disclosures were “written at a level too difficult for the average consumer to understand. …
This is probably well understood, so many of us do not bother with the disclosure when

Housing Price Trends Repeats Itself Around the World… 2007-07-16 10:30:44 The Canadian housing market is pretty hot these days, as there are new developments everywhere and houses getting sold higher than the asking price. This is almost a replica of what happened in the United States several years ago when the housing market was very, very hot. It is well documented that it is financially wiser to buy a bigger home when the housing market is down, but what often happens in real life is the complete opposite since people always buy a bigger house when the market is hot, thinking they can make more money.
For our Canadian friends that want to make money in real estate, all I can say is good luck and don’t get caught up in the bubble like many people have in the states. Greed is always the last thing we want to have when we buy an investment, especially with a huge purchase like a house. We should buy what we can afford, so we don’t get caught if there is a correction.
For most people, buying a house should primarily be a lifestyle Read more:Housing

Business Idea - Make Millions with Ferry Crossing Services 2007-07-20 10:30:11 A couple weekends ago, I went to Balboa Island for a luncheon with some friends. While I was there, I realized that a very smart person has established a ferry service that lets people and vehicles to cross the island for a couple bucks per trip. Although there are other ways to get on the island, this was convenient for many people so business is good for this owner.
A closer look at the price board and the traffic shows that this is not only a very profitable business but a relatively stress free business.
As you can see in the photo, each car and driver needs to pay $2.00 and passengers on the car also pays $1.00.
Look at that line up! I was there on Sunday but I walked by that place 4-5 times and there was always a huge line up to get on.
When I was on the ferry, there were 48 people (36 adults, 12 children) on the same boat including passengers in the cars. Additionally, there were 3 bicycles and 3 cars and the total trip time was 7 minutes and 23 seconds.

How to Avoid Losing More Things 2007-07-18 10:30:02 I just found out that I lost my Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS Navigator when I couldn’t find it today. My best guess is that I have forgotten it at my last rental car in New York. The device worked so well for me since I travel around the states and never know where I am going. I was in a jam in Texas because I did not know how to get to my hotel, so I ended up printing directions on Google maps at the airport.
I have lost so many things growing up that it will probably drive me insane if I remind myself by listing them all out. To avoid further lost, I took some time to think of some pointers for us to reduce losing more items since we will never be able to save any money if we keep losing things that will have to be re-purchased.
Scan the area to make sure you didn’t forget to bring anything - This is what most people do. Whether it is leaving the hotel room or the dinner table at a restaurant, it is always wise to do a quick scan if you have missed anything when you leave. From experience Read more:Avoid
Wedding Planning and Some Link Love 2007-07-22 19:57:07 Another week has gone by and I am happy to be back from Canada! I had a discussion with my fiancée about our wedding so stay tuned for tomorrow’s post about the newest update.
As always, I want to thank all the comments everyone left last week and I will highlight some of the posts from my top supporters!
SEO Web Design writes about Yahoo’s possible 12 billion bid for MySpace. This must be a joke because it would be about 25 – 30% of Yahoo’s total market share and would be the stupidest idea the company has ever made. All I can say is that if this happens, short Yahoo stock.
Baz talks about his why the iPhone can kiss his iButt. (He did ask iPhone lovers to stay away but that did not stop me from reading his post and even linking to it!)
This one is for everyone who owns a website out there. PixelHead Online has posted about Sphinn, which is a social networking site specifically for SEO and SEM articles. Check it out if you are into this topic!

Guest Post - Biweekly Mortgage Payment 2007-07-21 11:00:05 I invited Engineer to do a guest post as he helped answer many of my FICO scores on an earlier article. His site, Engineering My Finances, is dedicated to articles on personal finance and his approach to prepare for retirement. Below is his article about Biweekly MortgagePayment
s so check out his site and the article!

A few years back, my sister told me of an offer from her mortgage company. Basically, the loan would be restructured so that 1/2 of the current monthly payment would be paid every two weeks, to align with the biweekly pay period of most people. Since there are 52 weeks per year, not 48, there are 26 paydays per year. If you make 1/2 month’s mortgage payment every payday, then effectively there are 13 payments made every year instead of 12, the loan is paid sooner, and less interest is paid over the life of the loan.
But there are more details to the offer. There’s a one-time fee of $300 to restructure the loan, and a $6 fee each month to pay for this Read more:Guest
Waste Miles Per Gallon of Gas 2007-07-25 10:30:10 In recent years, we have been taught to use metrics such as miles per gallon (MPG) to determine the gas efficiency of a car. Certainly, driving the same gallon of gas on a Toyota Corolla is many times more efficient than that on a BMW X5. However, many of us don’t realize that it might be just as beneficial if we become more gas conscious! Often in life, we neglect to think of how we can change the situation by bettering ourselves and instead try to find ways to patch the problem. In our example, our problem is really spending too much money on gas and the patch is to find a more gas efficient car.
Sure, having a car with high MPG definitely allows you to spend less money, but it only reduces your spending. In order to be really efficient, you should look at how much gas you are wasting.
Let’s walk through my Monday and see how much gas I wasted. I live 2.12 miles from work and I drive to work every single day. I could bike to work or at least bike some of the time. It would be hea Read more:Miles
My Fiancée’s Birthday is Today and a Birthday Finance Tip 2007-07-24 07:30:28 It would be very much appreciated if everyone can leave a comment and say Happy Birthday
to my fiancée since today is the day!
I cannot disclose what today’s plans are yet since part of it is a surprise, but I typically spend much more money in July because her birthday is in the same month.
We spend much of the year saving money and there are times when we should spend some of our saved money to celebrate. The spending might be counter-productive technically but you cannot put a dollar amount on happiness.
On another note, we joined the Red Robin eClub, and they sent us a coupon for a free burger that is redeemable at the restaurant. This is an $8 - $11 savings depending on the burger that you get! The best part about this is that we get a 14 day period where the coupon can be used, so we aren’t forced to go on her birthday.
Happy Birthday My Love!

Our First Official Wedding Planning Meeting 2007-07-23 11:04:47 As I mentioned some time ago, my fiancée and I are getting married in February of 2008. After many weeks of searching and qualifying our options, we decided to have a banquet at a resort close to where we live.
A quick tally of the major expenses of our wedding so far is as follows:
Wedding Items
Price
Banquet hall (includes food, reception, and ceremony)
$13,500
Wedding coordinator
$900
Wedding Cake
??? (~ $300)
Flower
??? ($500 - $2000 depending)
Minister
??? (~ $200)
Photographer / Videographer
??? (~ $500 - $1,500)
Misc (wedding invitation, thank you cards, gifts for guest etc etc)
$1,000
Total
$16,900 - $19,400
As you can see, there are many things that can still fluctuate at this point. For example, the wedding cake, flowers and photographers can be very inexpensive or they can cost us all our life savings depending on how elaborate we want our wedding to be.
On the budget side, the $10,000 as mentioned earlier quickly became $20,000 as we will be inviting Read more:First

Make Money Off Renting Apartments 2007-07-27 10:33:53 Today, I saw a posting from my landlord about a two bedroom apartment up for lease and also a $150 referral incentive if we can find someone to lease that unit.
The greedy / business-minded side of me immediately thought about whether it would make sense to switch to a two bedroom apartment and try to rent out the extra bedroom. Below were the pros and cons that I thought about.
Advantages
Rent Charges - The rent for my one bedroom apartment is currently $995 and the two bedrooms are running for $1,350. This means that as long as I can charge more than $355 for the extra bedroom, I will come out ahead on rent alone.
Utilities - I can structure a contract so that the person that rents the extra bedroom share the utility bills. This will further cut down on the utilities we spend since there are some fixed ones like internet and cable TV.
Sell some furniture - If the new tenant has some furniture they want to bring into the apartment, it will allow us to sell the furniture that we have f Read more:Money

Why We Always Recommend Buying Low Cost Index Funds 2007-07-26 10:32:01 Many of us read countless advices about investing, with a vast majority of them recommending low cost index funds for the individual investor. Some of the articles provide a better argument than others, while some don’t give a reason at all. This article illustrates what happened with one of my reader’s investment portfolio so we can judge for ourselves whether low cost index funds are for us.
MoneyNing,
Like you, I am in the west coast and when I get to the office, the US stock market has opened. Sometimes I check the performance of my stocks, and other times I do not (actually, I check it all the time). When I did check it this morning, I noticed that the money in my taxable account went down by 12%. I looked into the details and realized what has happened. One of my stocks Wavecom (WVCM) just reported earnings and the stock went down 20%. Since I had much money in this stock, I was hurt bad. Really bad. How One Couple Saved for Their Dream Home In 5 Short Years 2007-07-29 13:07:47 I just read an article on NY Times about a couple that saved $98,000 in 5 years to buy their first house in New York. They are a perfect inspiration for all of us that says we don’t have enough money to save because the couple were by no means earning high salaries (a little over $100,000 combined by the end of the 5 years and much less at the beginning) while having to deal with the high standards of living of Manahattan.
In order to put the down payment on the $445,000 apartment, they quit smoking, stop meeting their friends for beers after work, stop buying new clothes, gadgets and pretty much everything that they did not need. The question they often ask themselves were “Do I want the house or an iPod? or Do I want a latte or the house?”
It was hardest for them in the beginning because they weren’t used to not buying those luxury items but they slowly got used to it. During the first year, they saved $8,000. In the next two years, they saved a combined $ Read more:Dream

Where I Bought My Harry Potter Novel and How to Find a Better Deal on Books or Magazines 2007-07-30 10:34:00 I finally got the HarryPotter
book from Costco for $18.19 since it was the best deal I could get after a little bit of a research. This is compared to Amazon’s $17.99 price plus shipping (For free shipping, I needed to get over $25 worth of literature). Below are the few places I search around when I need a book or magazine.
Books
For most people, having boxes shipped to their house is not a problem so Amazon is usually the least expensive choice if we can group purchases together so each order is $25 (This gets us free shipping).
The other choice would be Costco, Sam’s Club or Walmart which often sells books at a discount. The advantage of going to the store is that we can get the book the day we want it instead of having to wait for the package to come.
There is something new at the airport newsstands lately called borrow and return. For many people, this is a better choice than buying a book outright because we can buy the book and then return it, getting half of the money Read more:Magazines
Around the World PF Links Harry Potter Edition 2007-07-29 10:54:01 Being a HarryPotter
fan, I plan to buy the last book that just came out about a week ago. I wanted to going to Costco first to see how much it costs there first so I should know by today. I’m not sure if I will ever read a novel in my life again after I finish this book since Harry Potter has been the only novel I have read in my life (somehow I got through school without reading any :)).

Is Coke What I Really Want 2007-07-28 17:02:57 Today is a very hot day. It is so hot that we were wondering if we can “take off” parts of our skin. 20 minutes ago, I really had this urge of drinking coke. I thought to myself that it would taste great, it would be ice cold, and it would make my day just so much better! I rushed to the kitchen, opened the fridge and that’s when it dawned on me that we had 3 cans of coke left from buying a case of soda a year ago. If I finished those 3, I’m not sure if we will go out and buy any unless they were on sale again.
The thought pondered my mind a little more, and I realized that it is not necessarily Coca-Cola that I wanted, but rather something cold. I looked around, and realized that I would have been just as happy with ….
A great cup of ice water! So here you go, healthier and less expensive.
Have a great rest of the weekend!
A Calculation of the Short Time Between the Statement and Due Date of My Citi Credit Card 2007-08-01 10:33:54 I have well publicized that I changed to the Citibank’s PremierPass Card Elite Level for all my credit card purchase to take advantage of their generous mile bonuses whenever I fly. (You can read the article here if you need a refresher). However, I found that there is one major difference between my Wells Fargo Credit Card and my new card that warrants a mention here because the new citi card might be costing me money in ways I never realized until recently. The main difference I found with my citi visa credit card is that the time between the statement date and the due date is very short. For example, my statement date last month was 7/9 and my payment was due on 7/30. This means that if I made a purchase on 7/8, I will need to pay for it 7/30. As a comparison, my Wells Fargo credit card had a statement date of around the 25th of the month, with the due date on the 23rd.What’s the big deal? Here’s a little calculation. I’m going to assume that I buy $100 worth of stuff on Read more:Short
Set Boundaries For Yourself To Guide You to Wealth 2007-07-31 10:35:00 I got a letter from Etrade today about completing my details for my online savings account. One of the things I noticed is that they didn’t include the enclosed envelope for us to mail the paperwork back.
These days, companies are finding more and more ways to save money. The simple idea I mentioned might be able to save Etrade tens of thousands of dollars since they don’t have to provide the postage fees.
Although corporations are looking for ways to save money, not all of us are. For most of us, our money leaks like the extra coffee we buy, that extra large fries that we really couldn’t finish, or paying extra for that electronic gadget we wanted because we were too lazy to find a good deal online really waste much of our money.
It’s actually quite hard to not waste money when there are no rules to go by. This is especially difficult when the amount we often slurge on is small. It would make things much easier however if you limit our boundaries. Read more:Boundaries

California’s Weird Law for Cheques 2007-08-03 10:27:34 I just heard from my fiancée that she heard the recipient of a cheque can tell the bank that the amount the cheque is worth up to $15 more without the bank really questioning it. She claims that this came from her Bank of America rep. To illustrate it in an example, let’s say that if I got a cheque for $100, I can theoretically tell the teller that the cheque is really $110, which I would get. It is up to the issuer of the cheque to dispute this and if nothing was done, then the bank won’t be responsible either.
