Custom ringtones on your iPhone 2007-07-15 06:30:28
One of the major complaints about the iPhone
is the lack of custom ringtones available. To most it would just make sense that this was something that should have been included with the initial launch, this is a music phone after all. We also all knew that it was just a matter of time before someone would figure out a way to get it done, it’s just to bad that it is not coming from Apple (yet). Instead we have a nice, very detailed 23-step process on getting your favorite songs to be ringtones.

“Honey, I Shrunk The Speakers” 2007-07-15 05:15:11
How small do speakers have to get before they become just a little bit ridiculous? Just ask Sony. The company has just unveiled its new £600 Bravia Theatre DAV-IS10 5.1 home cinema system with possibly the smallest speakers ever on a home entertainment system.
Even the main system, which will play and upscales DVDs to [near 1080i], measures just 21cm across and 10cm high. It also houses a FM/AM radio – not DAB - which is a bit disappointing. Still, the controls are hidden and touch sensitive and it boasts Bravia Theatre Sync to allow for one-button operation of this unit when it’s hooked up to other Bravia kit.
The golf-ball sized speakers will no doubt make placement easy but they run the danger of being swallowed by your dog. Other features include:
- Two Digital Media Ports compatible with MP3 players, including the Network WALKMAN.
- TDM-BT1 streams music via Bluetooth from devices such as A2DP 'music phones'
- TDM-NC1 hooks into your home WiFi network and streams mus
Evesham Adds HD To e-box PC 2007-07-15 03:50:11
It looks pretty much like the old one – which was liked a lot by reviewers – but this one comes with a HDMI port for hooking up to a HDTV.
Forget about getting a Blu-ray or HD DVD drive though – this is one is for decoding high-def content from broadcasts [thanks to twin TV tuners] and content you download off the Web.
As you can see, the e-box HD takes the form of many other Media Center PCs in that it looks like the rest of your slinky consumer electronics. Under the hood is a dual-core 2.6GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ CPU, 1GB of DDR 2 memory and a massive 320GB 7200rpm S-ATA hard disk drive.
It comes loaded with Windows Vista Premium, Logitech Cordless Keyboard and a handy 3-year warranty for £699. To see exactly what your 69,000 pennies will get you, jump now.-Martin Lynch
Example Specification: e-box HD £699.00 Inc. VAT.

Rumor: Pictures of the new TiVo Series3 Lite 2007-07-14 22:00:24 Gizmodo has posted up some rumored pictures of the TiVo Series 3 Lite. It is said that this “Lite” version is a cheaper version of the TiVo Series 3 and will come down in price from the absurd $800 to an affordable sub-$300 HDTV DVR to be released in the fall.
Other rumors include the additional of dual CableCARDs for tuning and recording. Besides that, the remote will also be different from the full Series 3 in regards of quality. It is designed to look more like earlier TiVo models instead of the Series 3 as well.
One would guess that TiVo would see a huge spike in sales in they release a much cheaper model, it just depends how many features users would be giving up to get this compared to their $7.99 per month rental DVR from their satellite/cable provider.

Wireless USB hubs start to arrive 2007-07-14 18:10:53
We have been getting teased with the concept of wireless USB technology for a while now. In that regard it seems like everything is finally going wireless. I digress…
Belkin has announced their upcoming 4-port wireless USB hub, the first of many products that will help you connect your USB devices without the cables. The wireless signal works within 30 feet, allowing you to roam around while transferring data, printing documents, or calling data. But remember that you cannot charge your devices via wireless USB, only send/receive data at the USB standard of 480Mbps. This works with printers, camera, scanners, hard drives, and more.
Late August 2007 with launches in Asia, Europe, and Australia to follow, though you will pay a nice price to cut cables: $199.99.

Coffee break- new hangout, The Daily Brew 2007-07-14 15:29:31
You know me, always on the lookout for a nice coffee shop with good brew, free WiFi (preferably) and a nice comfortable place to work. I found just such a place at the corner of N. Eldridge & Cypress N. Houston in Cypress, TX called The Daily
Brew. The beverages are really nice and priced reasonably (meaning cheaper than Starbucks) and although small it has some nice tables and the mandatory comfy chairs for Tablet users. They give you the encryption code for the WiFi when you buy a drink and it’s happy surfing from that point on. They have a second location not too far from here but I haven’t visited that one yet. See you at The Daily Brew.

Dell fixed the Ubuntu based system pricing 2007-07-14 13:30:14
Dell had originally announced last week that the Ubuntu
based systems would sell for $50 cheaper, but then mistakenly priced the Ubuntu systems so that they actually ended up costing $225 more that the Vista Home Basic Edition systems. Once again Dell is acting in a stand up manner and admitting a mistake.
A Dell spokesperson told DesktopLinux.com that “Bottom line this was an oversight, pure and simple,”.
I cannot tell you just how refreshing it is to see a large company admit a mistake and take the actions needed to correct the issue in a timely manner. The pricing has already been corrected on the Dell website, making the Ubuntu based systems $50 cheaper than a similar system running Vista Home Basic Edition.

Kingston launches high-capacity USB thumb drives 2007-07-17 15:41:29
Remember the days when the capacity of USB Drives was measured in megabytes? That is all a thing of the past. Kingston
is adding making their Data Traveler line a little more spacious.
While these drives are minuscule in physical size, what’s on the inside is what really counts. The Data Traveller 100 (which boasts a retracting USB connector) is available in 1, 2, 4, and 8 gigabytes for $19, $32, $59 and $116, respectively.
The upper class Data Traveler II Plus is available in 8GB ($154) and comes bundled with syncing software from Migo, great for Outlook users.
Though the Traveler II Plus comes with the Migo software, the Traveler 100 does sport a more protective form factor and more size options. Both models come with a five-year warranty.

Sprint sucks fun out of hide-n-seek 2007-07-17 15:05:49 Sprint will begin offering its customers with GPS loopt in an effort to boost the value of its service. Loopt service allows your private list of friends the ability to see where you are reducing the chances of missed encounters.
“The most common mobile question in the world is ‘where are you?’ and we’re excited that loopt will be able to answer that question for Sprint customers who choose to participate,” said Sam Altman, loopt CEO and co-founder, in a statement.
Loopt was rolled out to Sprint subsidiary Boost Mobile last November and have succeeded in signing up 100,000 to the $2.99 per month service. Sprint aims to add this service option to over 25 of its current phone offerings.
I can see the kids digging this. On the plus side, the service can be dumped at a moments notice, allowing you to go “off the grid” much like you can block IM friends. Though, the opportunity for hackers/stalkers is a little unnerving. Not to mention, could Read more: Sprint

The Wave LED Coffee Table Provides Motion-Seeking Light Show 2007-07-17 12:40:39
Here's an interactive LED coffee table that refuses to simply table your coffee—it twinkles and sparkles, reacting to movement. The Wave uses 32 near-infrared sensors which observe the space above the table and any motion detected is mimicked with trails of light and color from 480 LEDs.
A cat, for instance, would be followed by LEDs as it walked across the table. Once sitting, only its moving parts would be responded to, such as its tail. It's good that the table only uses 35 Watts of power when fully active, or else mesmerized guests would run your coffers absolutely dry. Each 62" long, 31" wide, and 18" high table is made to order and starts at around $2,500. [Because We Can via coolest-gadgets] Read more: Coffee

A Zune fan fights back against the “Hide-A-Pod” 2007-07-17 11:58:49
We were just introduced the the Hide-A-Pod, which is a Zune
like case that will protect your iPod from anyone who may be looking to snatch it from your hands. Now in response to the Hide-A-Pod Zune case we have what would appear to be a Zune fan striking back with another spoof product. This one will also protect your iPod or iPhone against
theft but with just a bit of a twist. With Hideapod Gel you will allow you to “take your iPod and stick it where the sun don’t shine”.
Me being on the iPod side would rather prefer to go with the Hide-A-Pod Zune case as opposed to the Gel, but I suppose the gel would be more or a deterrent against theft.

Semk Cupcake Speakers Are Deliciously Kitsch 2007-07-17 10:06:18
Yum Yum Yum. Semk's cupcake speakers are a world away from your average girly gizmo. Normally, I would run a mile from this kind of ultra frou-frou, pastel twinkiness, but these little objects are somehow different.
Maybe it's because it looks like a cake and I LOVE CAKE. Of one thing, however, I am sure. A couple of the guys at Mondo Giz would love them - basically because they look like a pneumatic pair of tits, the nipples covered by heart-shaped pasties. No prizes for guessing who I'm thinking of, eh, Jason and Jesus?
Fresh out of the factory, there's no word on price or availability yet, and the Semk site is playing silly buggers right now, but I reckon these will sell like hot cakes. Oh dear. -Addy Dugdale [Technabob] Read more: Cupcake

Crawling Zombie Vigorously Drags His Legless Carcass Into Your Heart 2007-07-17 09:35:35
If you're one of the hordes of the zombie-obsessed, you're going to love The Crawling
Zombie, a legless, lifeless and red-eyed oaf that chases you across the table as he cries out such pithy sayings as "Hey, slow down, would ya? I can only crawl so fast!", and "I can't feel my legs," and even more wisecracks. Jump to the next page for a video of this undulating undead ogre in action.
Hey, that sucker can crawl really fast. As undead as he is, he still requires three AA batteries. Activated by any noises, he's certain to scare unsuspecting passersby. That might be a thrill that makes him (it?) well worth his rather steep $38.90 purchase price. -Charlie White

Sony Shows Its Colors (For PSP Slim) 2007-07-17 09:32:20 The new PSP, in technical terms, is fugly. The updated colors include the obligatory Piano Black, Ceramic White, Ice Silver, and then…Rose Pink, Lavender Purple and Felicia Blue—notice there’s no Fireball Orange or Blood Red. Apparently the new PSP is a kinder, gentler machine with wussy casing that will operate in stark contrast to God of War flaming blade fatalities.

Mio C310x Map Updates Available - NOW! 2007-07-17 07:49:28
The Mio C310X firmware and Map update is available for purchase. We broke the news in late June, and are available for ordering now at the Mio website. I just ordered mine in a pretty painless checkout process; total cost is $24.90 with shipping. This is a thank you offering by Mio who I am sure pulled some strings to offer the maps at this price to those folks who helped put them on the map per se when they bought the Mio C310x.
From their website:
“Upgrading your device is simple! Once you receive the DVD just open the Quick Start Guide and follow along with our simple update process. There are only two steps: 1) Update Firmware and 2) Update Maps (this step updates the mapping software and map data all in one step).”
Follow this link to get started with the Mio C310X Map Upgrade DVD Ordering process.

Hisense’s candybar touchscreen phone, sleekness the only feature! 2007-07-17 07:44:21
Cell phone
s are on a diet these days, but with all that comes under their hood we don’t expect them to be as slim as your next door babe.
This one from Hisense surely is as close to her as possible. The phone measures a slim 15.2 mm and comes with a touchscreen display, a 1.3MP camera, MicroSD memory expansion slot and also supports stereo Bluetooth.
The best feature
of the phone is the metal-looking joystick that blends with the keyboard. The company could have made things by introducing a QWERTY keyboard instead of the accompanied “Multi-Tap” one. Moreover, the keys are irregularly shaped so you don’t expect the owner of this phone to send you SMSs every time he thinks of you. Buy it only for the svelte figure.

Samsungs’s joystick phone patent to boost cellphone gaming 2007-07-17 07:02:49
After analyzing different barriers that hinder gaming playability on cellphone
s, Samsung has unveiled a new cellphone
patent that describes dual touchscreen to facilitate gaming applications.
The basic application of this patent is its joystick
gear for mobile terminal offering an exciting approach to the control of mobile games.
The lower part of this clamshell cell phone spins to form a joystick and to capture 3D movements of a joystick to turn them into the game control signals it uses multiple magnets and Hall effect integrated circuits technology.

Daxian’s C8100 unveiled sans a QWERTY keyboard 2007-07-17 06:58:25
Daxian has launched their candybar PDA-like handset the C8100 at the SINOCES 2007, which was being held in China.
The phone sports a respectable 1.3MP camera, which complements a 2.4” TFT touchscreen display. You will also get a built-in multimedia player and a MicroSD expansion slot to cater to all your multimedia requirements.
The phone lacks a QWERTY keyboard
so it will just be common among those who are experienced in handling phones with a stick. However, the phone comes with a virtual keyboard that can be used for messaging and adding tasks and some other important notes.
The phone is not expected to reach US. Till now there is no information on the price and the availability. Stay tuned for more info.

Alarm clock and boombox iPod docks - from Sony 2007-07-19 20:39:24
Has Sony
finally jumped the shark? They’ve just pushed out two iPod
docks. Sony, who led the market for years with the Walkman series, recently dropped their Connect Music Service, a laughable “competitor” to iTunes.
Now, cutting your losses is fine; but I guess Sony learned the adage, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”
The ZS-S2IP (pictured above) features a retractable dock for your iPod, and can output sound through it’s (relatively) huge boombox speakers. It can be powered by batteries, and it’s wireless remote can also be used to control CD and Radio playback, when not using the iPod functionality.
As for the Alarm Clock dock, the ICF-C1IP, with full time display on the bottom also supports dual alarms.
Both Benedict Arnold machines devices will be available this August for 100 smackers apiece.

Sony unveils “Minimalist” home theater system 2007-07-19 17:18:33
The Sony
DAV-X10 is the gold standard of home theater
systems when it comes to minimalism.
The entire package is as pictured above; a sleek main box, which has some hidden touch controls, and only two speakers. Some may say, and many will agree, that two speakers is paltry compared to the 5.1 and even 7.1 surround sound of today’s market. However, the surround sound will be available by Sony’s own S-Force PRO Front Surround technology, through virtualization. The small package accounts for 480 watts of power consumption.
A simple Bluetooth adapter will allow you to play music off of any device with compatible technology. “Old” DVDs will be upscaled to fit your shiny 720p or 1080i HDTV.
No information in terms of price point yet, but there should be soon given its purported September launch.
