Just venting 2008-02-20 23:42:24 I've had all this pent up frustration in me this week because of last week's show. In this video post, I just wanted to get it all out in the open and out of my system. I didn't want to contaminate Thursday night's show without (kind of) resolving in my own mind what happened last week. So, I apologize for the whinnyness (is that a word?) of this video post, but at least I feel better and I can really focus on having fun again on The Doctor Anonymous Show.....
Med 2.0 blog carnival 2008-02-18 11:02:45 I'm a big fan of Bertalan Meskó and his blog called Science Roll. If you haven't checked out his blog, I highly recommend it. He has an interest in genetics and in technology. And, I'm looking forward to having him on The Doctor Anonymous Show sometime soon in the future. Many people are familiar with the blog carnival called "Grand Rounds." But, Science Roll anchors a blog carnival called "Medicine 2.0" where there are links and stories about web 2.0's impact on medicine and healthcare. I was pleasantly surprised to be included in the most recent edition of Med 2.0.You should check out and follow the live shows of Doctor Anonymous. There is even a BlogTalkRadio badge over on the Med 2.0 post. Thanks so much to Berci for mentioning the show and for including a BTR badge. I really appreciate
Flu Epidemic 2008-02-18 05:26:57 (This is a continuation of part one from yesterday)Last night got a little better for me. The coughing was still there, but not as bad. In fact, the coughing is still here right now as I write this. The muscle aches have pretty much resolved. And, to be honest, this was the main symptom that was bothering me. The headache and sore throat are continuing to improve. It's a good thing, because I'm on call tomorrow and the weekend coming up.As I was doing more research this weekend, I found this article from the Associated Press from February 15th saying that this year's flu vaccine is effective for only 40% of this year's flu viruses.Infections from an unexpected strain have been booming, and now are the main agent behind most of the nation's lab-confirmed flu cases, said Dr. Joe Bresee, the
Mac users are snobs? 2008-02-17 20:41:43 This is according to this video report from The Street (via Insanely Great Mac and The Unofficial Apple Weblog). The assertions made by this report include the following: Mac users
more likely to use teeth-whitening products; Mac users bought on average five new pairs of sneakers in the last year; More likely to buy organic food; More likely to frequent Starbucks; More likely to own a hybrid car; Mac users are perfectionists; Prefer to drive station wagons; More likely to pay for downloaded music. To me, this report is pretty funny. I hardly resemble any of the characterizations above or in the report. (I'll let you sort out which ones you think I am.) But, I will not stand for this painting of a broad brush of all Mac users. There is too much discrimination going on in this country right no
Gov. Strickland has marching orders 2008-02-17 18:04:20 This is definitely not a political blog. But since the US presidential nominating process is going to be rolling through my state 16 days from now, I thought that it may be interesting to make a few observations. Channel surfing this evening, I saw the interview above, which I thought was fascinating. The interview has two governors from the same Democratic Party who are supporting two different candidates for the nomination. The first is Governor James Doyle from Wisconsin (pictured to left above) who is supporting Sen. Barack Obama for the Demorcatic Presidential nomination. The second is Governor Ted Strickland from Ohio (pictured to right above) who is supporting Sen. Hillary Clinton. I have particular interest in this because Gov. Strickland was my congressman before being elected to t Read more: marching

Influenza Case Study: ME 2008-02-16 14:44:16 The following is a anecdotal case study of a guy who has influenza. I apologize in advance for the long post. But, if you want to know how it feels to have influenza, read on. As you can see from the graphic above from The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the flu epidemic is practically nationwide. Here's my story. I was on call the day before Valentine's Day. A typical busy day and night - having to go back and forth into the emergency room to see people. While making rounds on Valentine's Day, I was talking with some people who said the hospital was starting to see cases of influenza. Of course, those words passed right by me because I got my flu shot last fall.A few hours before the worst. show. ever., I was starting to feel some muscle aches in my legs. And, then, I was feelin Read more: Study
Happy Valentine's Day 2008-02-14 21:47:30 Welcome back to love week here on the blog. Yes, I know, Valentine
's Day is not for a couple of days. But, why not try to start a little discussion on this topic. In my video post above, I talk a little bit about the "controversy" surrounding Valentine's Day. I think that asking people about Valentine's Day is more controversial than asking people about politics or religion.Do you think I'm kidding? Well, ask someone about Valentine's Day and leave me a comment about your experience. I've encountered either really happy people or really bitter people. Let me know what you find out when you ask people. Finally, direct from the category of over-promotion, I'm going again to tell everybody about the Valentine's Day Estrofest on The Doctor Anonymous Show - Thursday, February 14th at 9pm eastern Read more: Happy

Worst. Show. Ever. 2008-02-14 21:41:55 I'm so mad right now that - that - I don't know what I could do. I'm just venting. You know this is what happens when I really try to promote a show. The problem started from the first minute. There was this annoying echo that I could hear. At first, I thought that one of my guests was causing the feedback, but it wasn't.The echo really threw me off for the entire show. It felt like I was in a tunnel for the entire thing. Thanks so much to Dr. Val, Jenni, and Crzegrl for sticking with things and wanting to go forward with the show. Thanks also to Mother Jones who called into the show to add some banter. What we found out later was that the audio from my show was cutting into the audio of another show. The host of the other show called in and explained the problem. Seemed like a pleasant cha
Fewer Primary Care Docs 2008-02-12 22:14:20 In a shocking report (not really) released by the General Accountability Office (ie - the US federal government), they stated that there are fewer primary care docs now than there was about 10 years ago. The first thing I have to comment about is the name - "General Accountability?" - What's up with that? To whom are they accountable? Let me answer that - nobody!Anyway, in this Associated Press article, the report goes on to say that in 2006, there were about 22, 146 American docs in residency programs across the United States. In 1995 (when I was in medical school), the number was about 23, 801. For the next few years after that, the number plateaued. Then, right when I graduated is when the fall started to happen."It is troubling to me that the number of Americans pursuing a career in pr Read more: Fewer

Grand Rounds 2008-02-12 15:46:46 Grand Rounds
4.21 is now up and running over at HealthBlawg: David Harlow's Health Care Law Blog. If you can believe it, this is a health care lawyer and consultant handling GR this week. But, not to worry, this Valentine's Day edition is well done.In fact, it is so well done, that I have a post in this week's Grand Rounds
, and I didn't even know it. On Sunday afternoon, I wrote the post called "Love Hormone," and I thought that it would be a great edition to GR. But, when I looked at the deadline, I read that I missed it. So, being a past GR host, I remember how annoyed I was when people tried to e-mail me something past the deadline. But, this morning, I was checking my stats and found that I was getting referrals from this week's GR site. When I clicked over there, I was pleasantly surpr Read more: Grand
Love Tragedy 2008-02-11 10:01:58 Welcome back to "love week" here on The Doctor Anonymous blog. Unfortunately, this is going go be a bad news post. In fact, quite a tragedy. I didn't believe it the first time I read this story. A bride has a dream being like the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." I've seen the film - good stuff.According to this Associated Press story, here is what happened...Kim Sjostrom carried blue and white flowers during the ceremony — the colors of the Greek flag — as she exchanged vows with Teddy Efkarpides, a 43-year-old carpenter and Navy veteran. They had met three years to the day before the Jan. 19 wedding.During the couple's first dance, Sjostrom complained of being lightheaded. Efkarpides thought his wife, a diabetic, needed sugar, but she collapsed. Wedding guests, paramedics and doctor Read more: Tragedy
Blog Break 2008-03-10 23:18:18 I admit that it's been a while since I've felt like this. When I first started my blog more than a year and a half ago (has it been that long already?), I was like most people - full of energy - very excited about the project - writing really great posts, etc. At some point, people really start reading what you're writing and your blogroll starts to grow and things are going great. It's kind of funny because that is the exact moment when I remember taking my first blog break. I was feeling overwhelmed. For some reason, I was putting pressure on myself to post every day and to try to "top" the last post with something more creating and/or entertaining. So, I had to step back for a little while and get some perspective. And, as people who read here often know, I take blog breaks every so often Read more: Break
Dr. A Show returns 3/27 2008-03-20 01:08:53 I think that I'm coming out of my fog now and starting to feel a little bit less overwhelmed. Thanks to everyone for your comments and e-mails of support during my blog break. I'm not completely back yet "regular" blogging. But, I am happy to announce that I will be returning to do The Doctor Anonymous Show on March 27th at 9pm eastern time.Boy, will I have lots to talk about. So much so, that I'm not even scheduling a guest. It will be me talking about stuff and you calling in and telling me what's been happening with you. First of all, I'll kind of talk about what happened for me to take the blog break in the first place. Then, we can talk about whatever you like. I've been reading articles this week about the annual Match Day even that is going to take place later today at medical school
Show 28 preview 2008-03-21 11:50:16 Above is a video promo for Show 28 of The Doctor Anonymous Show. I thought the knight rider theme music was kind of funny. I recently purchased a used video camera and going to be trying out more video blog posts. We'll see. But, have a great weekend, everybody. I'll be with the family for Easter lunch on Sunday. Hopefully, I'll be back text posting next week, but the office will be busy. We have people taking Easter week off. So, work will definitely be busy for me next week. Have a good one. Peace!
FatDoctor.org: Erased? 2008-03-28 12:18:30 You think you're having a bad day? Here is what Fat Doctor twittered about half an hour ago.... (Don't you just love twitter?) FatDoctor Accidentally erased my whole blog. And I don't have a backup. No sense crying - it's not like a family member dying...or is it? 28 minutes ago from web So, I'm putting the call out to all our friends in the medical blogger community and beyond. We simply cannot let this happen to one of our blog friends. I wish that I knew more about this stuff to help. But, alas, I do not. (I did know that google saves a cache of blog. For example, hers is here.)I don't even know if I have an e-mail address for her. Anyway, if anyone has any sugges

night for the triumphant return of The Doctor Anonymous Show on Blog Talk Radio! Yes, I've had enough of Talkshoe. I have so much to talk about that I didn't even schedule a guest for the show. I hope that doesn't prevent you from tuning in. Check out the preview here.I'm not afraid of trying (and failing at) new and different ways to do the show. So, here are some topics that I'm going to be talking about:*The Blog Break: Why it happened and where have I been?*New ideas for the show and future guests*National Doctors' Day: Did you know it's coming up next week? - sort of. For those of you who do not know, the real host this week is the one and only Grunt Doc. But, if didn't know already, he could not handle the entire GR himself. It's hard to explain. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then start with the Grunt Doc blog this week and you'll eventually end up here.
For those of you who are up to speed and are bounced here from the Medgadget blog, I encourage you to watch my video post above. Here is a presentation of a few links that I have been allowed to present:
Kerri Morrone blogs about Diabetes Alert Day.
ERNursery goes off on JCAHO, er, The Joint Commission (TJC) on the wonderful area of hospital medication reconciliation.

Dr. A Show 29 Preview 2008-04-01 22:26:36 The Doctor Anonymous Show is proud to welcome Paul Levy who is President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is author of the blog Running A Hospital. I've always wondered what it's like being "on the other side." Of course, administrators probably feel sometimes that people like docs and nurses are on "the other side." (Video post above)For those of you who don't work in medicine on a day-to-day basis, especially in a hospital, there are times when clinical people like docs and nurses clash with the administrative team on certain issues (did I say that nice enough). You have probably seen (or even written) posts about hospital administration. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not going to be a combative interview. But, I am looking forward to it.For example, here Read more: Preview
Show 29 Wrap-up 2008-04-03 23:08:51 Thanks so much for Paul Levy for coming on the show. We talked about the Boston Red Sox (of course) and some professional football team up there (he didn't remember the name - hehe). Then, we went into the circumstances by which he became the CEO of the hospital. He said that he had no prior hospital administrative experience (shocking to me). He, in fact, was in charge of the sewer system (Yeesh). And, there were thoughts of selling the hospital. It's now six years later and it looks like they are still around. (video post above)To me, his philosophy is so simple, it's mind boggling. He has made hospital information as transparent as possible for anyone who wants to know it. He posts things like quality data and infection rates on his blog (good and bad). (I mistakenly mentioned financial

Our guest will be Paul Levy who is author of the blog Running A Hospital. Before Paul makes his appearance on the show, I'll also be talking about the April Fools Grand Rounds of this week. What did you think of it? Did you like it, did you not like it? Did your post get left out? What did you think of the multiple host format for GR? How bummed is Dr. Wes that he has to follow this next week? heheIn addition to all of this, I'll be taking your phone calls! The Joy of Learning 2008-04-06 23:22:08 I don't know what's going on, but it seems like there were a lot of people at a conference last week - like Dr. Val, Fat Doctor, and The Happy Hospitalist. Of course, I'm jealous. I guess I really should schedule some out of town time at some point soon.Anyway, I've also taken up educating myself a little bit. But, this is a little out of necessity. My board certification in Family Medicine is up this year, and I have to take my recertification exam in a few months. In fact, I just scheduled the date for July 25th. (Maybe I should get one of those countdown clocks for my sidebar).I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not the biggest fan of standardized tests. Even going back to the ACT, SAT, MCAT, USMLE, etc - I have this mental block and anxiety going into these exams and preparing for Read more: Learning
Raise Your Voice about Type I DM 2008-04-07 22:47:55 One of the things I love about the blogosphere is reading people who are passionate about their point of view and wants to share it with the world. Kerri Morrone is one of these people. Her blog is Six Until Me and I have been following an education and advocacy "movement" on her blog she calls "Raise Your Voice
." She has designated Monday, April 14th to 'Raise Your Voice.'What she is looking to do is to raise awareness about Type I Diabetes Mellitus. The media is full of messages about Type II DM, and it should be with the numbers rising and younger and younger kids being diagnosed with Type II. What Kerri is trying to do is raise awareness on what has traditionally been called "juvenile onset diabetes."Just in the past week, she held a logo contest on her blog (the winner is above). Ther

Show 30 Preview 2008-04-08 21:59:46 Can you believe that this show is up to number 30? Granted that probably the first third were just trying to work out major technical difficulties. But, still, I'm surprised at myself for continuing this project this long. Anyway....Be sure to join me for the next edition of The Doctor Anonymous Show which will be Thursday, April 10th, 2008 at 9PM eastern time on BlogTalkRadio. Our guest will be the blogger Bongi from the blog Other Things Amanzi. He is a surgeon from South Africa. He first caught my attention a few months ago when he submitted his post for my Grand Rounds last fall. Show 30 Wrap-up 2008-04-10 23:44:20 What a great show tonight! Thanks so much to Bongi, Sid, Kerri, Vijay, and everyone who joined us live in the chat room. (Video post above). For me, it was really interesting hearing Bongi and Sid talk about how it is to be a surgeon in his country and in this country. I admit I don't know all that technical stuff. But, listening to how they approach the same procedure - fascinating.I felt like I was at an international conference, but still in my place. Plus, with Vijay calling in live from India and describing some of the same infrastructure problems and government problems in his country and how it is the same there as it is in South Africa and/or in the United States. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Thanks also to Kerri for calling in at the beginning of the show. R
Weekend Update 2008-04-13 21:49:31 A quick summary of my weekend (especially Sunday) is seen above in this video post. I make reference to "Me Today" which is a group of videos on this site. Ever get a song stuck in your head? Well, that happened to me when I saw this video post by iJustine. Then, I went to a meetup meeting for the PodCampOhio event that will take place on June 28th. (See my promo for the event here.) Close to the end of the meeting, things got a little crazy with Brandice, Joe, Matt, and Angelo. (The theme was "Show us the stickers on your laptop." Notice the two other people shooting at the same time that I was - hehe) Finally, to finish the weekend, I went back to the office to try to clear off as much as my desk as I can to start the week fresh.
