Afghanistan Opinion Poll Silences Cut-and-Run Crowd
2007-10-18 22:34:00
Results from an unprecedented public opinion poll of the Afghan people taken by Environics Research couldn’t have come at a worse time for Canadian Liberal leader Stephane Dion, NDP chief Jack Layton, and all others in Canada calling for our troops to leave Afghanistan post-haste.With recent losses in key by-elections and the rebelling of his party’s Quebec wing, followed by some deft political moves by massively-underestimated Prime Minister Stephen Harper (this weeks Speech from the Throne should be held up as an example to students of politics everywhere of how to effectively govern a minority government like a majority), the last thing the embattled Grit leader needed was more bad news. But things did in fact get worse for Dion. In war-torn Afghanistan, 51% of all those questioned said that they believed their country was ‘headed in the right direction’, compared to 28% who felt the opposite. As well, 43% said that they wanted foreign troops to stay in their country as lo

The Frustration of a Canadian Conservative
2007-10-14 14:08:00
One of the many benefits of being a conservative as opposed to a liberal is that we never have any shame about self-criticizing our own party. Being naturally opinionated, conservatives won’t hesitate to call out one of our own for a little verbal slapping when needed. Where liberals will openly turn on each other out of ambition, the motive from the political right is borne out of keeping the team strong in the fight against the other side. It is from that basis that I write today. You wouldn’t believe how frustrating it is to be even slightly to the political right in Canada. Our current Conservative minority government represents but a reprieve from the seemingly endless reign of the Eastern Canadian dominated Liberal governments. It has become impossible to differentiate between actual news stories and leftwing opinion propaganda segments on our national broadcaster, the C.B.C. Readers will know my opinion of the popular George Stroumboulopoulos-hosted show The Hour and its form

A Time of Relief or Regret?

What a time to be an Albertan. We’re enjoying the biggest economic boom in our history thanks to the incredible strength of our energy sector, our government coffers are overflowing, and we continue to ride the cool wave of prosperity despite the recently announced changes to the provincial royalty scheme (note: the doomsday believers will have to wait a little longer – Petro Canada announced that they are, in fact, going ahead with their two main oilsands projects. Expect other major industry players to follow suit and stay the course.)We are in the middle of the first federal Conservative government in years, albeit a minority. The Harper government is flirting with majority numbers in the public opinion polls, and finally it’s the Liberals who can’t get their act together. This is a virtual mirror image of the 1990’s, when the Chretien-led Liberal governments, even with some internal strife, took full advantage of a divided and forever-bitching right wing and held powe

The Return of the Forces
2007-10-24 16:18:00
You can understand if the 20 year old and under crowd in Canadian society is a bit confused lately. Those poor Generation Whatever-letter-we-are-on-now kids, fresh from the leftist, anti-war mind-bath also known as our education system, are having to learn who those strange, khaki-coloured people with the guns are. (Message to the younger crowd: those fine people are called ‘soldiers’ or ‘troops’. They are from a military organization known as the ‘Canadian Armed Forces ’. Given how this poor group had been gutted for over a decade by neglect and outright targeting by the previous federal Liberal administration, I can forgive your failure to recognize them.)One cool thing about not being a member of the Forces myself is that I don’t have to be careful in stating my opinion about either my disgust of the previous anti-military Chretien/Martin government, or my kudos for the current Conservative regime who have more than lived up to their election promises of rebuilding

Strange Days, Indeed

Am I the only one who has noticed a string of weird occurrences taking place lately? It seems that we are experiencing some sort of flip in the universe given some of the bizarre realities of today. In fact, I am becoming more and more convinced that Hell has indeed frozen over. I keep looking skyward for those expected soaring sows. Just imagine if the 2001 edition of you was suddenly beamed into 2007. Would any of this be believable?First, Canada’s P.M. Scary Stephen Harper has convinced people that his much-feared ‘Hidden Agenda’ contains such frightening ideas as lower taxes, strong national defense, toughening our crime laws, and common sense towards the environment. For the first time in a long time, Canadians are actually warming to the idea of a Conservative majority. How about the value of the dollar? For the first time in a half-century, the Canadian loonie is worth more than the U.S. greenback. I guess we know who is whose bitch now! If it wasn’t for America

Clinton's Plan Will Flatline
2007-10-11 13:31:00
I’ve been watching the Democratic race with….alright, so I haven’t really been keeping up with it. It is hard to feign interest in a race whose top candidates are so lacking of charisma. With their number one issue being Iraq for so long that they have actually managed to make a debate about war boring, Hillary and the gang just haven’t created much of a buzz. That was until I learned of Senator Clinton ’s health care plan. Like many of the candidates, Clinton believes that a socialization of the United States health care system will cure all of its ills. More than once, the idea of a so-called ‘Canadian-style’ or similar universally-based system of delivering health care to Americans has been floated and praised as the model to follow. It is as if Clinton formed her plan after watching Michael Moore’s latest propaganda film ‘Sicko’, which misleads the audience into believing that Canada’s system is some sort of health care utopia; a kind of system that Americans sh

There must be something in the water in the Bourassa constituency of Quebec. Maybe someone’s been spiking the poutine or slipping a little something extra into the baguette recipe. There has to be some reasonable explanation as to why the residents of this Quebec community continue to elect one Denis Coderre. God knows, it can’t be for his political acumen. The man definitely puts the ‘member’ in Member of Parliament. A history of stupidity stretches behind this laughing stock that include sideshow exhibits such as publicly verbally attacking a Canadian hockey player – the captain of the team, actually – during an international hockey tournament. Shane Doan is an extremely respected and valued person on and off the ice. In this era of fallen heroes and P.R.-poisoning athletes, Doan stands apart with his strong personal convictions and his tough-but-fair playing style. When false accusations of Doan slandering French folks appeared, he stated from beginning to end t

President Nutjob's American Tour
2007-09-26 14:13:00
“My tables--meet it is I set it down That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain. At least I am sure it may be so in Denmark.” – (Hamlet at I, ii)A favorite game to play is pretending we could go back in time and change things. We ponder such hypothetical ethical dilemmas as ‘if you could go back to 1939, knowing what you know now, would you kill Hitler?' Entire university courses center on these themes. It’s the classic morality struggle. This comes to mind due to the New York visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that sent the media world into its latest frenzy. The world’s new Nutjob Number One gave numerous interviews to a starving American media, whose constant anti-Iraq War message and spotlight on the Democratic race has grown tiresome even for the political Left.Trying hard to give the impression of innocence and harmlessness with his soft-spoken demeanor and his repeated denials of wrongdoing, Ahmadinejad instead painted a pathetic portrait of an obvio

A Chat With JFK
2007-09-19 14:01:00
The last thing I remember is falling backwards. I had been hanging a picture on the wall when, as I recall, the footstool gave way and I nailed the back of my head on the table. Somehow, I end up in Massachusetts sitting on a park bench. I turn and look at the figure sitting next to me and there, astonishingly, sits the 35th president. He says hello.JFK: Care for a scotch?MS: Um, sure. Where am I?JFK: On a park bench.MS: No, I mean…JFK: So, what’s been happening since I’ve been away?MS: Well, what would you like to know, Mr. President?JFK: Is the Cold War over? Who won?MS: Sure. That was over by 1990. Wall came down and everything.JFK: Outstanding! So, how’s the new free and democratic Russia? A shining free market success just like we all guessed, right?MS: ….okay….JFK: Well, they don’t have some kind of power-hungry communist leading them now, do they?MS: Moving on….so what do you miss the most?JFK: Sailing. There’s no sailing here. And a nice, round set

Tabloid-style Conspiracies
2007-09-15 11:27:00
The six-year anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks came and went this month, with the expected television specials and documentaries. Stories of survivors and victims alike, new and repeated, reminded us of that horrible day when the New World War was declared. But this time something even more troubling went along with the solemn day of remembrance. A rise in conspiracy theories has occurred, each new one more disgusting than the last. Israel, North Korea, and even the Bush administration itself have been marked as being behind the attacks. Outrageous claims, from the buildings being brought down by explosives to Jewish people being prevented from entering the Towers that day (which doesn’t explain the Jewish names included in the 3000 victims) have filled not only the internet chat rooms, but have started to appear on television. Fueled by the support of such natural thinkers as Rosie O’Donnell and Charlie Sheen, the conspiracy nutjobs are having a field day.It isn’t uncomm

Random Rants: September

Now that Fred Thompson has officially started his run for the White House, the Republicans have an actual conservative candidate.......That sound of hysterical laughter? That's al-Qaeda reacting to the morale-boosting interview given by Democrat candidate Dennis Kucinich on Syrian television. Not since John Walker Lindh has an American done so much to help the terrorists.......sign of the times: we turn a blind eye to China's human rights violations for the sake of trade, but when Barbie comes complete with Corvette, Dream Home and toxic levels of lead that's when we draw the line.......after watching Canadian P.M. Stephen Harper's speech to the Australian parliament on September 11th, it is official: we now have a genuine statesman as our leader. He deserves a majority victory in the next election......it's time we stop calling Pakistan our 'ally' in the War on Terror. The enemy has become quite comfortable within that nation's borders.......Israel has repeated it's inten

Loud and Clear, Rick.
2007-09-09 14:28:00
Before I get started, there are a few admissions I think I had better make. Being a proud Albertan, I feel the need to open up and come clean about a few things. Really, it’s the least I could do.I don’t own a pickup truck. There. I said it. It’s now out there, undeniably. And that’s not all…I don’t own a gun, either. Nope. Not one. Wait, there’s more: I graduated from school. I regularly wear shoes, too. I couldn’t care less if two gays wanted to marry, and don’t care if they smoke a joint on their wedding night.Oh, and I still have all my own teeth. Sorry to disappoint all of you from Ontario, but it’s the truth. Given the long history of accepted stereotyping between different regions of Canada, hearing a story that plays to this is hardly ever shocking. Cultural and regional animosity is part of our nation’s make-up. They are part of our people’s fabric and surely the brittle ties that bind. But sometimes it is just annoying.Such was the case

The Foresight of Bush
2007-09-04 11:45:00
Of all the theories I buy into, none cause so many raised eyebrows and dropped jaws (and patronizing inquiries regarding my sanity) as the one I hold concerning one George W. Bush. With a current approval rating sitting underneath the radar and the Blame Bush culture firmly entrenched in our society, I tend to feel somewhat like a salmon swimming upstream. But, I’ve given it much thought and have only grown stronger in my conviction: history will prove Dubya was right. Right about Iraq, right about Afghanistan, right about al-qaeda, right about the world being at war, and right about the war being a religious one. Despite the drabble of disgruntled ex-military colonials and so-called military ‘experts’ appearing one after the other on cable news channels, the truth is Iraq is now a front in the War on Terror. To leave that nation unprepared to stand on its own would possibly be remembered as a mistake in hindsight and a turning point in the ongoing war.The political left has convi

One Night In Paris
2007-08-31 13:33:00
The ten-year anniversary of the untimely death of the People’s Princess has brought the expected concerts, prayer services, and television retrospectives. Her celebrity sons’, long-since the holders of the media spotlight, can be seen everywhere with greater than normal scrutiny with the collective reminder of their Mom.Lost in the wave of reminiscence is the main cause of the tragedy. The death of Princess Diana was the first real example of Death by Paparazzi. An entrenched target of the camera vulture crowd, Diana received even more attention after her split with the two-timing Prince Charles than she got as the wife of the future King of England. It was obvious to her that she was never going to lead a sedate life without the glare of the camera. She knew that film was going to capture every single escape from her home, and she quickly learned to use gathered throngs to her advantage. Diana deftly managed to deflect the spotlight to shine on issues that she held dear to he

What Are They Teaching Our Kids?
2007-08-30 12:01:00
Remember years and years ago, when you were in school? Remember having to wear your itchy ‘Good’ clothes, gather with your similarly dressed classmates, stand in front of your beaming parents, and sing Christmas carols? Remember when you were allowed to sing Christmas carols? My eyes opened a few years ago when I attended my daughters’ school Christmas concert. This event occurs at public schools throughout the free world, and has done unimpeded for decades. Not that time.Any reference to ‘Christmas’ was glaringly absent. When the curtains first opened, I was met with a large, sparkling-silver sign hanging on the back wall of the gymnasium stage: PEACE. My reaction, admittedly, was anything but Christian. What the Hell…?The event slipped quickly from bad to horrible when the first group of singers began their rendition of that all-time Christmas favorite, Imagine by John Lennon. Seriously. I’m not joking. The follow-up ‘All You Need Is Love’, with the interspers

Finally, A Canadian P.M. That Doesn't Embarrass
2007-08-20 18:48:00
The latest meeting of North American leaders is underway at Montebello, Quebec, and I can’t help but notice something a bit different. The script is the same – photo ops, the show of solidarity and friendship, the bath-challenged protesters, - but there is a different feel to the shindig. It’s the same weird, unfamiliar sensation I experienced the last time the respective national leaders got together, and I think I’ve figured out what it is: for the first time in a long time, it isn’t embarrassing to have the Canadian Prime Minister in the international spotlight.Stephen Harper looks in control when he meets with the American President. In fact, impression is of an equal friendship. There is nothing to support the long-labored attempt to paint Harper as some sort of Bush stooge or puppet, as is the wish of the political Left. On the contrary, one feels that when Harper makes a point of discussing an issue such as Canada’s Arctic sovereignty that it is received with all due

By the Way, We're Winning the War
2007-08-13 13:26:00
I’d like to steal your attention away from the endless news reports of dead soldiers and suicide bombers for a moment, if I may. Give me a minute of your time and I promise to let you go right back to the clips of anti-war protesters, anti-war poll results, and Sean Penn-Hugo Chavez love-ins.Just in case no one else has told you, we are winning the war in Afghanistan. Really.Feel free to reread that last statement as often as it takes before you realize it isn’t a typo. Given the lack of media reports acknowledging any kind of success it is understandable that this comes as a bit of a shock. For example, I doubt that you know that, according to the NATO website: “Three years ago, there was no (Afghan National Army) to speak of, but today the ANA stands at 35,000, many of whom are conducting operations side by side with ISAF forces. In many cases, the ANA is now engaged in or leading major operations.”Lost in the rush to be the first to report the latest Coalition

America, Can We Talk?
2007-08-07 23:14:00
Mind if we have a bit of a chat? I know you are currently a little busy, what with the constant threat of a repeat of 9/11 and having to deal with Nancy Pelosi as Speaker, but there are a few things that I think you need to know.First of all, please - please! - don't let what is happening in Canada happen to you. The flickering sign of some sort of sanity that appeared when we finally elected a national Conservative government has been doused by a growing public opposition to our fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Each week a new poll is released that shows evaporating support for Canada's fight in the War on Terror. (I must stress: not all of us up here are losing our minds and our balls. Many of us understand that the New War started in September of 2001, and completely believe that we must fight them now.)With each fallen soldier's body that is gratuitously shown on the evening news the cry to pull our troops out grows louder. A group of leftist French-Canadians from Quebec

Once KGB, Always KGB

Who would have thought that, roughly seventeen years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Western world would be yearning for the days of communist Mikhail Gorbachev? The optimism that accompanied the destruction of the Iron Curtain has all but evaporated in recent months due to the eerie actions of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Once considered to be the most positive, Western-friendly leader of the once socialist bastion - during a summit in June 2000, U.S. President Bill Clinton praised him for "surely being capable of creating a strong and prosperous Russia", and after Gorbachev met with Putin in August 2000, he told that "he's certainly no threat to the Russian democracy" – recent events have made those of us who are old enough to remember the Cold War a bit uneasy.Kremlin-run youth camps for Russian children have been exposed as propaganda factories, mocking Putin’s political rivals as ‘anti-Russian’. More unnerving are the efforts to make the United States akin

The Cult of Gore
2007-07-25 12:51:00
I can see it: Back in the spring of 2001, after all of the Florida counts and recounts (and recounts) were exhausted, a plan was hatched. The goal was to use the power of ‘trend’ to reinvent former Vice President Al Gore. There had to be a raison d’etre; something that would appeal to the masses. If Gore learned anything from eight years as the understudy to Slick Willie Clinton (other than how to properly interview an intern) it was the value of fads. That, and the truth that Hollywood + rock stars = lots of media coverage and leftwing support. The most obvious target that would ensure not only the backing of the younger generation but play on the peoples sense of fear – only Gore can save the Earth! –was the environment. More specifically, the claim of global warming. Team Gore readjusted its focus from the White House to the Green House. The rise of the Cult of Gore is an interesting study. Using the usual leftwing mix of paranoia, fear and guilt to sway public opinion, Gor

Sure - NOW They Want To Fight
2007-07-22 07:56:00
At least it's evidence that someone actually reads my blog. Back in the second week of June I posted a rant that zeroed in on a fringe Quebec anti-war group.(http://lpsullivan.blogspot.com/2007/06/block-heads.html)In it, I referenced a CTV Newsnet interview with a spokesperson for something called 'Block the Empire', which had decided to write letters to Quebec-based Canadian military members asking them to break the law and refuse to go to Afghanistan.Upon further investigation, I exposed this radical group for what it is: not just anti-war, but anti-everything. It's nothing more than a pro-anarchy group of Che Guevara t-shirt wearing misfits posing as activists. I guess some feathers were ruffled. While it is not uncommon for a writer to receive responses, both positive and negative, to an article, what is unique to me is the fervor by which the attacks have come. Apparently, instead of fighting with Islamofascist terrorists, French-Canadians would rather tangle with a 'real' en

These days, it seems that there isn't a place in the Blogosphere, television media, or radio that doesn't have it's sights set on attacking conservative pundit Ann Coulter. Liberal wordsmiths have taken Coulter as their new favorite target. Even rightwing writers have started to turn their back on her and her controversial statements.I, for one, love her. Some of the so-called inflammatory statements that Coulter has recently made have been taken out of context and used against her point. Others have been attacked for the simple crime of being right. So it goes for someone who is daring enough to say what others won't.While I admit I have not read every book written by her, I have read and thoroughly enjoyed 'How to Talk To A Liberal (If You Must)' and her latest 'Godless'. The point of view she takes on certain subjects such as homosexuality and legalization of marijuana not withstanding, I tend to see things very similar to her.I won't make a case by case defense of her recen
