Tories Turn Left and Lose Numbers
2007-05-09 17:56:00
They were showing the top 50 most bizarre plays on some cable station last night, and one clip reminded me of Stephen Harper. The receiver had caught an amazing pass and was running hard towards the end zone. His smart moves and great speed caused him to pull away from his opposition. It looked like the play was a sure thing. Then, inexplicably, he turned left. And he got tackled short of the goal line.Advisers in the current Conservative party have enjoyed a reputation as smart political thinkers. To reverse the negative 'Bush Jr.' image of Scary Stephen Harper into a redefined image of a strong leader and good family man took considerable skill. To position the minority Tories to take a possible majority was unthinkable a short time ago, but for a while polls had shown that to be achievable. Now, those same strategists are either being shut out of the decision-making process, or they have collectively misplayed their last few hands. The government has, over the past few months, all b

Fred Thompson Fires Verbal Slap at Michael Moore

Why is Senator (and totally cool bad-ass character actor) Fred Thompson my choice for next American president? Here's why. This response to that fat bastard Michael Moore 's challenge to a debate is quickly becoming a thing of legend:

Canadians Ignorant re: Afghanistan War
2007-05-14 21:14:00
Canadians support for our involvement in the Afghanistan war has fluctuated greatly since the campaign began. While everyone claims to 'support the troops', not all are in favor of the continued presence of our military in the war-torn nation. The great yo-yo of opinion dips when another fallen soldier comes home, and like clockwork causes one of the federal opposition parties to propose some half-baked cut-and-run idea like creating a time limit on a war. (STILL can't figure that one out, Stephane.)The Canadian public, particularly the younger generation of voters who are coming out of the over-liberalized, leftwing public education system, are forming their opinions on a mix of false, misguided, or downright wrong information. Worse, many are completely oblivious to the facts regarding the war itself.I have heard some interesting reasons for opposing our fighting this war: It's about oil; we weren't invited; the American's got themselves into this, therefore it's their war, no

Fear of a Hilary Planet
2007-05-23 20:04:00
It's only the middle of 2007 and already there is election buzz happening down in the U.S. While the Republicans seem to be focused on the 'is Fred Thompson a go or no-go' issue, the Democrats are hitting their usual meek stride by offering voters not a choice of who would make the best president, but who would be the least-worst.Barack Hussein Obama's run as media wonderboy fizzled out around the same time as his middle name became public. The other candidates are so non-existent in the American psyche that they need not be mentioned, with the obvious exception of Mrs. Clinton. What would Hilary 's America look like? Keeping in mind that it would be this generation's most well-known enabling wife in charge of the most powerful nation on earth, there is every reason to believe that a Clinton victory would be disastrous for the United States. Her image, already smudged by deciding to let her husband's inability to keep his presidential seal behind his zipper go by seemingly without

Can We Have A Do-Over?
2007-05-30 11:45:00
One of the possibilities that can occur in an election is that a candidate could, although not being the first choice of the political party, 'come up the middle' and claim victory. There are two distinct times that I can recall this happening, and each one illustrates the good and the bad of this phenomenon. In 1980, the city of Calgary went to the polls the select a new mayor. While already a growing Western Canadian city, about the only thing Calgary was known for internationally was it's famous Stampede. That year saw the incumbent Ross Alger run as the favorite, with his media-perceived primary challenger being future criminal Peter Petrasiuk. A combination of the two top runners splitting votes and the undercurrent of popularity resulted in a television reporter named Ralph Klein becoming the surprise winner that year. Not only did the Klein victory set off a chain of events which led to global recognition for the city (such as the 1988 Winter Olympics), but it also marked the b

I said hello to a Frenchman once. He promptly surrendered. That old one came to mind when I tuned into a pathetic interview that filled time in between actual news items on CTV Newsnet. The sickening guest was a spokeswoman for something called Block the Empire. She was promoting a letter writing campaign by her group directed at Canadian soldiers based in Quebec, urging them to break the law and, in effect, become traitors to their country by refusing to go to Afghanistan. The rare occasions when the questions weren't full of fluff resulted in the poor, obviously English-challenged girl to stutter half-sentences while desperately searching for an answer in any language. After the segment ended, I decided to dig a little deeper and visited their website. CTV Newsnet missed a few little points about the anti-war protest group, such as the fact that they are an extreme, so-far-to-the-left-that-Stalin-would-be-proud, radical movement. They are against more than just Canadian troops fighting

Supreme Nightmare
2007-06-10 11:20:00
It's frustrating. It's maddening. It is an example of an overly bureaucratic justice system. And for Lesley Miller, it is the continuation of a living nightmare.Miller, who is a study in courage and strength, recently learned that the man who brutally beat her husband will get yet another chance to state his case in a court of law. In November 2000, Dougald Miller was an apartment manager in Edmonton. While attempting to remove a vagrant from the foyer, he was attacked and left in such a condition that he could not speak. He is now a paraplegic who must live in an extended-care facility. In 2002, Leo Teskey, a man with an already lengthy history of violent acts, was convicted in the beating. Lesley, who is always by her husbands side, must have felt a slim piece of closure. Any chance of that is now gone, thanks to the Supreme Court of Canada ruling in a 6-3 decision to grant Teskey a new trial. It seems that the presiding judge of this case took too long in submitting his decision to

I Don't Want To Say 'I Told You So', but...
2007-06-14 13:34:00
History is going to show that December 2, 2006 was a turning point for Alberta. Like the legendary shift from the ruling Social Credit party to the Progressive Conservatives in 1971, the Alberta political scene once again shifted last winter. The day of the Alberta Progressive Conservative leadership run-off vote will be remembered as the day the first crack in the hull of the Unsinkable Ship Tory appeared. Following a sometimes vicious campaign, the Alberta Blue-bloods split the vote so severely that everyone's number 2 became the Top Dog. It was Ted Morton's social conservatives against Jim Dinning's urban supporters, and the end result was a victory for the obviously-unprepared nice guy Ed Stelmach.Since then, the Alberta political scene has made a shattering shift - one that has been severely misinterpreted by the media, mind you. With the Liberals bi election victory in former Premier Ralph Klein's riding in Calgary, even the national media has jumped on the 'Alberta is going

Here's another one for you: ......Canadians are quickly turning against our involvement in the war in Afghanistan, thereby giving the terrorists an amazing boost to their morale......the battle over the new Equalization plan would have happened no matter the government......the magic of Father's Day is never truly clear until you are the father in question......why couldn't Sheila Copps be as astute as an M.P as she is as a columnist?......a void has been created in Alberta's political scene. No Time To Be Politically-Correct
2007-07-03 10:17:00
When events cause someone to rethink their political beliefs, it can be a sobering process. Part of you is so entrenched that you are almost self-apologetic. All of my life I have been a moderate in terms of social issues. In the 1980's, I was part of a letter writing campaign and subsequent public march protesting the Apartheid policy in South Africa. I stood on the side of equality when it came to minority rights in Canada. I was even in favour of the immigration policies throughout that decade and into the 1990's and beyond. Now, I find myself forced to rethink my pro-libertarian stance. And that ain't easy.It has become blatantly obvious that the open door policy that many of the Western nations have had regarding immigration, along with the poisonous injection of political correctness into our culture (especially in Canada) has left us almost completely vulnerable and flat-footed against the new and vicious threat to our freedom. The New World War isn't being fought in some far-

He's Really Gone This Time
2007-07-10 00:11:00
Leftwing icon and propaganda filmmaker Michael Moore appeared on CNN yesterday to discuss his most recent Bush Bash Disguised As A Documentary Film ‘Pinko’…er….I mean ‘Sicko’.Preluding his discussion with usually annoying Wolf Blitzer was a short video segment, which outlined discrepancies with some of the claims made in the movie. As an example, Moore seemed to go out of his way to portray Canada’s and certain other nation’s health care systems as some sort of universal utopia compared to the U.S. system. The fact that wait times in Canada exceed that of the U.S. is ignored in the name of painting the image Moore is striving for.The first few seconds of the interview brought to mind a scene in Fawlty Towers, after Basil suffers yet another incoherent ramble from the oft-senile Major.“Oh, he’s really gone this time…”Moore, obviously embarrassed and upset about essentially being called a spin doctor with flimsy facts in his movie, lashed out at Blitzer and CNN

Sure - NOW They Want To Fight
2007-07-22 07:56:00
At least it's evidence that someone actually reads my blog. Back in the second week of June I posted a rant that zeroed in on a fringe Quebec anti-war group.(http://lpsullivan.blogspot.com/2007/06/block-heads.html)In it, I referenced a CTV Newsnet interview with a spokesperson for something called 'Block the Empire', which had decided to write letters to Quebec-based Canadian military members asking them to break the law and refuse to go to Afghanistan.Upon further investigation, I exposed this radical group for what it is: not just anti-war, but anti-everything. It's nothing more than a pro-anarchy group of Che Guevara t-shirt wearing misfits posing as activists. I guess some feathers were ruffled. While it is not uncommon for a writer to receive responses, both positive and negative, to an article, what is unique to me is the fervor by which the attacks have come. Apparently, instead of fighting with Islamofascist terrorists, French-Canadians would rather tangle with a 'real' en

These days, it seems that there isn't a place in the Blogosphere, television media, or radio that doesn't have it's sights set on attacking conservative pundit Ann Coulter. Liberal wordsmiths have taken Coulter as their new favorite target. Even rightwing writers have started to turn their back on her and her controversial statements.I, for one, love her. Some of the so-called inflammatory statements that Coulter has recently made have been taken out of context and used against her point. Others have been attacked for the simple crime of being right. So it goes for someone who is daring enough to say what others won't.While I admit I have not read every book written by her, I have read and thoroughly enjoyed 'How to Talk To A Liberal (If You Must)' and her latest 'Godless'. The point of view she takes on certain subjects such as homosexuality and legalization of marijuana not withstanding, I tend to see things very similar to her.I won't make a case by case defense of her recen

The Cult of Gore
2007-07-25 12:51:00
I can see it: Back in the spring of 2001, after all of the Florida counts and recounts (and recounts) were exhausted, a plan was hatched. The goal was to use the power of ‘trend’ to reinvent former Vice President Al Gore. There had to be a raison d’etre; something that would appeal to the masses. If Gore learned anything from eight years as the understudy to Slick Willie Clinton (other than how to properly interview an intern) it was the value of fads. That, and the truth that Hollywood + rock stars = lots of media coverage and leftwing support. The most obvious target that would ensure not only the backing of the younger generation but play on the peoples sense of fear – only Gore can save the Earth! –was the environment. More specifically, the claim of global warming. Team Gore readjusted its focus from the White House to the Green House. The rise of the Cult of Gore is an interesting study. Using the usual leftwing mix of paranoia, fear and guilt to sway public opinion, Gor

Once KGB, Always KGB

Who would have thought that, roughly seventeen years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Western world would be yearning for the days of communist Mikhail Gorbachev? The optimism that accompanied the destruction of the Iron Curtain has all but evaporated in recent months due to the eerie actions of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Once considered to be the most positive, Western-friendly leader of the once socialist bastion - during a summit in June 2000, U.S. President Bill Clinton praised him for "surely being capable of creating a strong and prosperous Russia", and after Gorbachev met with Putin in August 2000, he told that "he's certainly no threat to the Russian democracy" – recent events have made those of us who are old enough to remember the Cold War a bit uneasy.Kremlin-run youth camps for Russian children have been exposed as propaganda factories, mocking Putin’s political rivals as ‘anti-Russian’. More unnerving are the efforts to make the United States akin

America, Can We Talk?

Mind if we have a bit of a chat? I know you are currently a little busy, what with the constant threat of a repeat of 9/11 and having to deal with Nancy Pelosi as Speaker, but there are a few things that I think you need to know.First of all, please - please! - don't let what is happening in Canada happen to you. The flickering sign of some sort of sanity that appeared when we finally elected a national Conservative government has been doused by a growing public opposition to our fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Each week a new poll is released that shows evaporating support for Canada's fight in the War on Terror. (I must stress: not all of us up here are losing our minds and our balls. Many of us understand that the New War started in September of 2001, and completely believe that we must fight them now.)With each fallen soldier's body that is gratuitously shown on the evening news the cry to pull our troops out grows louder. By the Way, We're Winning the War
2007-08-13 13:26:00
I’d like to steal your attention away from the endless news reports of dead soldiers and suicide bombers for a moment, if I may. Give me a minute of your time and I promise to let you go right back to the clips of anti-war protesters, anti-war poll results, and Sean Penn-Hugo Chavez love-ins.Just in case no one else has told you, we are winning the war in Afghanistan. Really.Feel free to reread that last statement as often as it takes before you realize it isn’t a typo. Given the lack of media reports acknowledging any kind of success it is understandable that this comes as a bit of a shock. For example, I doubt that you know that, according to the NATO website: “Three years ago, there was no (Afghan National Army) to speak of, but today the ANA stands at 35,000, many of whom are conducting operations side by side with ISAF forces. In many cases, the ANA is now engaged in or leading major operations.”Lost in the rush to be the first to report the latest Coalition

Finally, A Canadian P.M. That Doesn't Embarrass
2007-08-20 18:48:00
The latest meeting of North American leaders is underway at Montebello, Quebec, and I can’t help but notice something a bit different. The script is the same – photo ops, the show of solidarity and friendship, the bath-challenged protesters, - but there is a different feel to the shindig. It’s the same weird, unfamiliar sensation I experienced the last time the respective national leaders got together, and I think I’ve figured out what it is: for the first time in a long time, it isn’t embarrassing to have the Canadian Prime Minister in the international spotlight.Stephen Harper looks in control when he meets with the American President. In fact, impression is of an equal friendship. There is nothing to support the long-labored attempt to paint Harper as some sort of Bush stooge or puppet, as is the wish of the political Left. On the contrary, one feels that when Harper makes a point of discussing an issue such as Canada’s Arctic sovereignty that it is received with all due

What Are They Teaching Our Kids?

Remember years and years ago, when you were in school? Remember having to wear your itchy ‘Good’ clothes, gather with your similarly dressed classmates, stand in front of your beaming parents, and sing Christmas carols? Remember when you were allowed to sing Christmas carols? My eyes opened a few years ago when I attended my daughters’ school Christmas concert. This event occurs at public schools throughout the free world, and has done unimpeded for decades. Not that time.Any reference to ‘Christmas’ was glaringly absent. When the curtains first opened, I was met with a large, sparkling-silver sign hanging on the back wall of the gymnasium stage: PEACE. My reaction, admittedly, was anything but Christian. What the Hell…?The event slipped quickly from bad to horrible when the first group of singers began their rendition of that all-time Christmas favorite, Imagine by John Lennon. Seriously. I’m not joking. The follow-up ‘All You Need Is Love’, with the interspers

One Night In Paris

The ten-year anniversary of the untimely death of the People’s Princess has brought the expected concerts, prayer services, and television retrospectives. Her celebrity sons’, long-since the holders of the media spotlight, can be seen everywhere with greater than normal scrutiny with the collective reminder of their Mom.Lost in the wave of reminiscence is the main cause of the tragedy. The death of Princess Diana was the first real example of Death by Paparazzi. An entrenched target of the camera vulture crowd, Diana received even more attention after her split with the two-timing Prince Charles than she got as the wife of the future King of England. It was obvious to her that she was never going to lead a sedate life without the glare of the camera. She knew that film was going to capture every single escape from her home, and she quickly learned to use gathered throngs to her advantage. Diana deftly managed to deflect the spotlight to shine on issues that she held dear to he

President Nutjob's American Tour

“My tables--meet it is I set it down That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain. At least I am sure it may be so in Denmark.” – (Hamlet at I, ii)A favorite game to play is pretending we could go back in time and change things. We ponder such hypothetical ethical dilemmas as ‘if you could go back to 1939, knowing what you know now, would you kill Hitler?' Entire university courses center on these themes. It’s the classic morality struggle. This comes to mind due to the New York visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that sent the media world into its latest frenzy. The world’s new Nutjob Number One gave numerous interviews to a starving American media, whose constant anti-Iraq War message and spotlight on the Democratic race has grown tiresome even for the political Left.Trying hard to give the impression of innocence and harmlessness with his soft-spoken demeanor and his repeated denials of wrongdoing, Ahmadinejad instead painted a pathetic portrait of an obvio

A Chat With JFK
2007-09-19 14:01:00
The last thing I remember is falling backwards. I had been hanging a picture on the wall when, as I recall, the footstool gave way and I nailed the back of my head on the table. Somehow, I end up in Massachusetts sitting on a park bench. I turn and look at the figure sitting next to me and there, astonishingly, sits the 35th president. He says hello.JFK: Care for a scotch?MS: Um, sure. Where am I?JFK: On a park bench.MS: No, I mean…JFK: So, what’s been happening since I’ve been away?MS: Well, what would you like to know, Mr. President?JFK: Is the Cold War over? Who won?MS: Sure. That was over by 1990. Wall came down and everything.JFK: Outstanding! So, how’s the new free and democratic Russia? A shining free market success just like we all guessed, right?MS: ….okay….JFK: Well, they don’t have some kind of power-hungry communist leading them now, do they?MS: Moving on….so what do you miss the most?JFK: Sailing. There’s no sailing here. And a nice, round set

Tabloid-style Conspiracies

The six-year anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks came and went this month, with the expected television specials and documentaries. Stories of survivors and victims alike, new and repeated, reminded us of that horrible day when the New World War was declared. But this time something even more troubling went along with the solemn day of remembrance. A rise in conspiracy theories has occurred, each new one more disgusting than the last. Israel, North Korea, and even the Bush administration itself have been marked as being behind the attacks. Outrageous claims, from the buildings being brought down by explosives to Jewish people being prevented from entering the Towers that day (which doesn’t explain the Jewish names included in the 3000 victims) have filled not only the internet chat rooms, but have started to appear on television. Fueled by the support of such natural thinkers as Rosie O’Donnell and Charlie Sheen, the conspiracy nutjobs are having a field day.It isn’t uncomm

Before I get started, there are a few admissions I think I had better make. Being a proud Albertan, I feel the need to open up and come clean about a few things. Really, it’s the least I could do.I don’t own a pickup truck. There. I said it. It’s now out there, undeniably. And that’s not all…I don’t own a gun, either. Nope. Not one. Wait, there’s more: I graduated from school. I regularly wear shoes, too. I couldn’t care less if two gays wanted to marry, and don’t care if they smoke a joint on their wedding night.Oh, and I still have all my own teeth. Sorry to disappoint all of you from Ontario, but it’s the truth. Given the long history of accepted stereotyping between different regions of Canada, hearing a story that plays to this is hardly ever shocking. Cultural and regional animosity is part of our nation’s make-up. They are part of our people’s fabric and surely the brittle ties that bind. But sometimes it is just annoying.Such was the case

The Foresight of Bush

Of all the theories I buy into, none cause so many raised eyebrows and dropped jaws (and patronizing inquiries regarding my sanity) as the one I hold concerning one George W. Bush. With a current approval rating sitting underneath the radar and the Blame Bush culture firmly entrenched in our society, I tend to feel somewhat like a salmon swimming upstream. But, I’ve given it much thought and have only grown stronger in my conviction: history will prove Dubya was right. Right about Iraq, right about Afghanistan, right about al-qaeda, right about the world being at war, and right about the war being a religious one. Despite the drabble of disgruntled ex-military colonials and so-called military ‘experts’ appearing one after the other on cable news channels, the truth is Iraq is now a front in the War on Terror. To leave that nation unprepared to stand on its own would possibly be remembered as a mistake in hindsight and a turning point in the ongoing war.The political left has convi

Clinton's Plan Will Flatline

I’ve been watching the Democratic race with….alright, so I haven’t really been keeping up with it. It is hard to feign interest in a race whose top candidates are so lacking of charisma. With their number one issue being Iraq for so long that they have actually managed to make a debate about war boring, Hillary and the gang just haven’t created much of a buzz. That was until I learned of Senator Clinton ’s health care plan. Like many of the candidates, Clinton believes that a socialization of the United States health care system will cure all of its ills. More than once, the idea of a so-called ‘Canadian-style’ or similar universally-based system of delivering health care to Americans has been floated and praised as the model to follow. It is as if Clinton formed her plan after watching Michael Moore’s latest propaganda film ‘Sicko’, which misleads the audience into believing that Canada’s system is some sort of health care utopia; a kind of system that Americans sh
