Forums.org managed to validate an Ubuntu installation as a genuine copy of Microsoft Windows
and get to the download page of Windows Defender, using IE4Linux and Wine. As IE4Linux doesn’t support ActiveX, he downloaded the validation tool and ran it using Wine. The validation tool generated the code. Surprisingly, it verified Ubuntu as &lsquo

Windows’ and forwarded him to the Defender download page. This means a validation bypass for the WGA validation. I bet MS would fix this in a matter of days.

Hurray ! Wordpress
has a new line of red official tees and also offers worldwide shipping. Earlier, non US citizens could not order the WP tees. The tees are high-quality, made by American Apparel, and are screen-printed. They feature a large “W” logo at the center. Styles are available for a limited time and new styles will be brought in probably about 2-3 a year.
I tried to get one and proceeded till the checkout page. It comes be 14 GBP (9.50 GBP for the tee and 4.50 GBP for the international shipping) .. That’s around 28 USD or 1120 INR. Heh.. truehearted WP bloggers with enough dough go ahead and try it.

Stop stealing my focus! 2007-08-02 09:50:18 One ‘feature’ of XP is the ability of one application to steal the focus from another. This is the reason why notepad looses focus when someone buzzes you in Yahoo! messenger. [Thatz still ok.. Imagine playing NFS MostWanted when some one messages you or an antivirus alerts you that it has been updated.]
If you find that annoying, here [right click, “save link as”] is a workaround for preventing an application from stealing focus.

Batch download photos from flickr - Flickrdown 2007-08-12 12:33:47 I was looking high and low for an option in flickr to download all the pics from my college group album, until I found none existed.
However, there is a very nicely written .NET 2.0 application by Gregg Man called Flickrdown which lets you mass download photos
from flickr. It’s made possible with the flickr API ( Another neato. Doesnt require you to reveal your password to any third party service to access your personal album )

New look orkut 2007-08-27 10:06:02 Orkut is all set to put on a new look. Features like photo and rich content scraps, favorite videos and feeds will be added soon to make it easier to communicate with friends. The site will also be translated into 12 languages. The colors are warmer, orkut has rounded corners, the new icons are lovely and there are even touches of AJAX. There is also a google logo at the right hand side of the footer.

After lots of wavering, Microsoft has finally made the due date for Windows Vista
Service Pack 1 (SP1) official: The update will ship in the latter half of 2007. Microsoft didn’t issue a press release with that pronouncement. Instead, it notified its Technology Adoption Partner testers of it via an e-mail regarding the imminent start of the Vista SP1 testing program.
Microsoft hasn’t released details of exactly what changes will be wrought in Vista SP1, which has been assigned the codename ‘Fiji’ but some OS components which missed the RTM cut-off will almost certainly be rolled into the update.
If Vista SP1 scrapes in by December 2007 it will have been 11 months since the OS itself debuted — the same length of time it took for Windows XP to get its first service pack. As previously reported, every song on Amazon MP3 is available without DRM software, meaning MP3s can be accessed on virtually any device.
Amazon MP3 is offering most songs at 89 or 99 cents, with all of the top 100 downloaded songs available at 89 cents. MP3s can be purchased via one-click shopping on the site, or through the Amazon MP3 Downloader software that the company offers.

Guess who’s rich ? 2007-09-23 00:54:09 Larry Page and Sergey Brin (both 34), tied for fifth on the new Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans released Thursday. They are each worth $18.5 billion.
That makes Page and Brin the youngest ever to crack the top 10 on the Forbes list. Their net worth has more than quadrupled since they first made the list in 2004, when their fortunes were “only” $4 billion each. And at the speed their fortunes are growing, the only question now is whether they can topple Bill Gates, 51, ranked first for the 14th straight year with $59 billion.

Many users have reported that the software they rely on isn’t compatible with Vista. Advanced power management features often don’t work the way they’re supposed to and sometimes too much security isn’t a good thing , like asking you for a password to perform what seem like the most basic of tasks.
Microsoft has made it easy for PC manufacturers to offer a downgrade
option to Windows XP. The downgrade option is only available for Windwos Vista Business and Ultimate editions. And PC makers get to decide if and how to offer the downgrade. Fujitsu has begun including an XP disc in boxes of computers it ships, while HP offers customers the ability to configure business models with XP. Lenovo will be selling XP “recovery discs” to customers who buy Vista Business or Ultimate until July 31, 2008. Hopefully by then Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will be out and will address most, or at least some of the major complaints.

Get ready for USB 3.0 2007-09-19 20:46:55 Intel Corporation and other industry leaders have formed the USB 3.0 Promoter Group to create a superspeed personal USB interconnect that can deliver over 10 times the speed of today’s 2.0 connection ( by adding fiber-optic links alongside the traditional copper wires) .The current USB 2.0 version has a top data-transfer rate of 480 megabits per second, so a tenfold increase would be 4.8 gigabits per second.
The technology, also developed by HP, Microsoft Corporation, NEC Corporation, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments Incorporated, will target fast sync-and-go transfer applications in the PC, consumer and mobile segments that are necessary as digital media become ubiquitous and single file sizes increase up to and beyond 25 Gigabytes.

has banned access to YouTube
after a single citizen complained that it contained clips which insulted the country.
The Turkish Telecommunications Board has been told to block all access to YouTube following the court ruling.
Turkey blocked access to YouTube in March this year after it hosted a video showing pictures of Ataturk with insults superimposed in English.

How to disable ATI Catalyst Control Center from context menu in windows 2007-09-30 23:21:21 Ever since I installed this updated version of ATI Catalyst
Display drivers, i have been plagued by this terrible menace. The “ATI Catalyst ControlCenter
” is the first item that pops up on my context menu. This can be really frustrating, especially for geeks who is so much adapted with the keystrokes for File>New.
Here’s a neat way to remove the item from the context menu for good.
Open regedit and goto
KEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryBackgroundshellexContextMenuHandlersACE
and remove the key named “ACE”. And voila… dilemma solved
Here are the registry keys to disable it and to enable it again (just in case)
