Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners
2007-07-12 21:06:33
It’s only fitting - for the first blog post here after the All Star Break - that the featured player would be Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners . The Kasugai, Japan born Ichiro was this year’s All Star Game MVP, and the only player in MLB history to ever hit an “in the park” home run in an All Star Game. The ever humble Ichiro admitted he thought of leaving the ballpark after playing in the All Star Game because he had a reservation at a restaurant, but he said he was told to stick around as he might be picked MVP. Ichiro has been ripping it up this year with .359 batting average, 39 RBI’s and 5 home runs. The dynamic center fielder is equally talented out in the field playing defense, stealing bases to advance his team or just stepping up to the plate to lead his team to victory. Currently in his seventh season with the Mariners, Ichiro carries an impressive .333 career batting average with 398 RBI’s and 258 stolen bases. He has also won six str

Josh Beckett of the Boston Red Sox
2007-05-20 12:53:08
Although he’s been put on the 15-day DL as of May 14, 2007 with an injured right middle finger, The Boston Red Sox pitcher extraordinaire, Josh Beckett has once again been ripping it up. In this 2007 season Beckett has posted a 7-0 record with a 2.66 ERA and 50.2 innings pitched and has been leading The Boston Red Sox to a commanding 9.5 game lead over their competitors in the American League East (It is worth noting the BoSox are a full 10.5 games up on the New York Yankees in the division). Josh Beckett was a 1st round (2nd overall) draft pick by the Florida Marlins in 1999, and became the first high school pitcher to be selected in the first round by The Florida Marlins, bypassing college baseball and moving straight into Single-A ball. Josh was named Marlins Rookie of the Year by the South Florida chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America after going 2-2 with a 1.50 ERA (4 ER/24.0 IP) in 4 starts for the Marlins after a September 1 promotion from Double-A

Matt Holliday of the Colorado Rockies
2007-05-15 01:00:08
This Article Submitted by Paul J. Matt Holliday, while only in his 4th season in the Major Leagues, is already showing a lot of promise. Matt Holiday is 27 years old, 6-4 235 lb right hander currently playing for the Colorado Rockies . He was a 1998 7th Round Draft pick for the Colorado Rockies. In his first year he had a solid .290 batting average and 14 home runs. Since then his batting average and home runs have both increased steadily every year. In ‘06 he had 34 home runs last year and batted .326. More then a month into this season he is batting over .370 and already has 8 home runs. Matt Holliday is a balanced hitter. He his not a home run hitter nor a contact hitter. He has a excellent combination of batting average and power hitting. He is an excellent mistake hitter and enjoys pitches up high in the strike zone. Very few players have such a solid full rookie season and then go on to keep improving season after season to the degree Matt Holiday has done. While its st

Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants
2007-05-11 15:52:34
Despite all the controversy surrounding steroid use and despite Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s recent rants and apology on his blog (http://38pitches.com/), there is no denying that Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants is one of the greatest sluggers of all time. Barry Bonds is a 7-time MVP and is 2nd in Major League history with 734 career home runs, owns baseball’s single-season records for home runs (73 in 2001), walks (232 in ‘04), intentional walks (120 in ‘04), on-base pct. (.609 in ‘04), slugging pct. (.863 in ‘01), HR ratio (6.52 in ‘01) and HR pct. (12.06 in ‘04). Barry Bonds has won an unprecedented 7 National League Most Valuable Player Awards (1990, ‘92, ‘93, 2001, ‘02, ‘03 and ‘04), no other player has won more than three. Bonds is currently chasing Hank Aaron’s MLB record 755 career home runs and has racked up an impressive 11 home runs so far in the 2007 season, second only t

Derrek Lee of the Chicago Cubs
2007-05-08 17:57:27
Our first pick for the BaseballTalkPro All Stars Blog is Chicago Cubs firstbaseman Derrek Lee. Derrek is smoking hot with a current batting average of .414 for this season, a .424 average for the last 30 days and a whopping .526 average for the first week of the month of May. Although not known to be a power hitter who drives in home runs, Derrek has already racked up an impressive 21 RBI’s and has an on base percentage of .496 which is only suprassed by the San Francisco Giant’s slugger Barry Bonds and Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies. Derrek Lee has been a consistent performer since he was a 1st round draft pick in 1994 by the San Diego Padres. He was a part of the underdog 2003 World series Champion Florida Marlins, is a two-time Rawlings Gold Glove recipient, and is a career .994 fielder at first base. Derrek was honored with the Louisville Slugger Silver Bat Award (presented annually to each league’s batting champion) and a Silver Slugger Award in 2005 howeve

Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees
2007-07-14 20:49:11
Suprise, suprise… After all the whining and complaining by New York Yankees fans over him not meeting expectations attached to signing the richest contract in sports history, Alex Rodriguez is dishing it out to Yankees fans and critics alike by leading the major leagues in home runs and RBI’s this season. Currently racking up 31 home runs and 87 RBI’s and boasting a .317 batting average, A-Rod is giving the Yankees fans something to cheer about, even if they are trailing the Boston Red Sox by 10 games in the race for the American League East title. Alex Rodriguez was born in New York, but his family relocated briefly to their native Dominican Republic and then to Miami where he attended Westminster Christian High School. Rodriguez signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the University of Miami, but instead opted to become eligible for the MLB draft at the age of 17 and was consequently drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners in 1993. A-Rod quickly rose t

Hot Fantasy Baseball Picks for July
2007-07-19 19:14:23
Here’s a trio of starting pitchers who are absolutely hot in the Fantasy Baseball world. If any of these guys are still available in your league, they come highy recommended as it appears they are just heating up as the season wears on. Yovani Gallardo - Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher who threw six shutout innings in the team’s 10-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday, July 19. Fausto Carmona - Cleveland Indians starting pitcher who has been on fire since the All Star break. Overall 11-4 with a 3.77 ERA. Sergio Mitre - Florida Marlins starting pitcher who is 4-4 with a 2.81 ERA and 58 strikeouts despite the Marlins miserable offense. On the other side of the fence, these pitchers seem to have lost their game and are among the most dropped in Fantasy Leagues. Ervin Santana - The Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher has given up 21 earned runs in 14 innings pitched in July with an overall 5-11 record and a 6.22 ERA, Santana is amongst the most dropped fantasy pitch

Scott Olsen Busted for a DUI - Beaten by Police
2007-07-21 22:57:28
Florida Marlin’s troubed 23 year old pitcher Scott Olsen ’s troubles just took a turn for the worse Friday night following a 10-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds when he was arrested for a DUI. Olsen was booked into the Miami Dade county jail on charges of driving under the influence, resisting an officer with violence and fleeing and eluding a police officer. That was after he was stun gunned by the arresting officers he tried to resist. More Details Here Olsen has had trouble controlling his outbursts and had just returned from a two game unpaid suspension after a confrontation with teammate and fellow pitcher Sergio Mitre. Olsen received a black eye last season from his friend and former teammate, reliever Randy Messenger, in an off the field confrontation in St. Petersburg. Olsen also got into dugout disputes with teammate Miguel Cabrera and then-manager Joe Girardi, who grabbed him by the jersey during a discussion. Regardless, the kid shows huge potential, and as a Marlin

Braves Set to Trade Saltalamacchia for Teixeira
2007-07-30 20:08:03
I’m not quite sure what Atlanta Braves general manager John Schuerholz and skipper Bobby Cox were thinking by bringing back the 49 year old infielder Julio Franco and now trading rookie sensation Jarrod Saltalamacchia for Mark Teixeira of the Texas Rangers. The Braves were set to send Saltalamacchia, shortstop Elvis Andrus and two more minor leaguers to Texas for Teixeira and left-handed relief pitcher Ron Mahay. Granted the Braves have struggled at first base all of this season and they currently don’t have a lefty in their bullpen (not that the Braves awful bullpen really matters). The Braves bullpen has been terrible this year, almost as bad as last year. It seems every time John Smoltz or Buddy Carlyle get pulled by the venerable Cox in the 6th or 7th inning, with a lead, the bullpen comes in and loses the game for them. As a Braves fan (second only to my favorite Marlins) I personally liked Salty and think he added to a young talented squad with slugger Jeff Francoeur

Barry Bonds One Away from Tying HR Record
2007-07-29 02:05:02
Barry Bonds is slamming it this year. One more home run to tie Hank Aaron’s home run record. I’m a diehard Marlins fan, so hopefully Barry won’t tie or break the record against my favorite team (especially since Sergio Mitre is a starting pitcher in my Fantasy Team). Otherwise, I’m one in the minority that really wants to see Bonds break the record. All steriod issues aside, records are made to be broken ans what athletes care to do with their bodies is their own business. Who knows how long Bond’s record will last with Alex Rodriguez as the next contender for the record as long as he stays healthy.

Teixeira Makes Debut With the Braves
2007-08-02 02:46:36
In my last post I expressed my disappointment about the Braves trading Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the Texas Rangers for Mark Teixeira. Well, tonight is Teixeira’s debut as firstbaseman for the Brave’s and what a great debut it’s been. Mark walked in the first inning with the bases loaded and brought in Yunel Escobar. In the sixth inning Teixeira cranked a home run with Edgar Renteria and Chipper Jones on base giving him 3 RBI’s for his third at bat as an Atlanta Brave. Pretty good way to start his career with the Braves !!!

Frank Thomas and Alex Rodriguez Move Up The Home Run List
2007-08-04 18:46:34
While all eyes are focused on slugger Barry Bonds and his quest to surpass Hank Aaron as the all time home run leader, two other power hitters are making a move up the list of all time home runs. The Associated Press reported that Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Frank Thomas hit his 504th and 505th home runs of his career today. The two home rums moved him into 20th place, passing Eddie Murray on the all-time list. Thomas also had 4 RBI’s in the Blue Jays 9-5 victory over the struggling Texas Rangers on Saturday. Today also saw Alex Rodriguez become the youngest player in major league history to hit 500 home runs in the New York Yankees 16-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals. A-Rod’s 500th career home run came in his 1,855th game. Only two players took fewer games to reach 500: Mark McGwire (1,639) and Babe Ruth (1,740). Rodriguez leads the major leagues with 36 home runs this season, which is one more than he hit last year.

Tom Glavine Wins 300th Victory
2007-08-05 23:23:10
Wow, what a crazy and exciting weekend this has been for MLB baseball fans. While the hitters were leading the way by marching into the record books, New York Mets hurler Tom Glavine joined major league pitching’s most prestigious club tonight with an outstanding performance against the Chicago Cubs. Tom’s precision was flawless. His ability to change speeds and fool the Cub’s dangerous hitters led him to his 300th career victory. His manner and dedication are what have made him one of baseball’s best pitchers. The stylish left-hander earned his 300th victory despite nervous family and friends looking on from near the Mets’ dugout on the first-base side. Glavine left thegame with a five run lead after 6 1/3 innings tonight and New York’s bullpen held onto the lead for an 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Glavine who is 10-6 with a 4.38 ERA and 62 strikeouts this season became only the 23rd pitcher with 300 career victories. He is the first since f

Barry Bonds Ties Hank Aaron’s Record for Most Career Home Runs
2007-08-05 23:02:26
Following the home run accomplishments of Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees and Frank Thomas of the Tornoto Blue Jays, Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants was not to be outdone. It had been eight days and 28 plate appearances since Bonds hit his last home run which was number 754 and put him one home run short of Hammerin Hank Aaron ’s record for all time career home runs. Barry Bonds came out for early batting practice Saturday, hoping to break his slump and move into the record books. He accomplished it quickly, leading off the second inning, and slamming number 755 off San Deigo Padres starting pitcher Clay Hensley. Several fans held up asterisk signs and some particularly nasty fans booed the the San Francisco slugger when he headed to left field at the end of the inning. The Giants lost the game to the Padres in 12 innings with a score of 3-2, but Bonds’ accomplishment was a slam to baseball commissioner Bud Selig who sat high above the field in a private box a

Barry Bonds Hits Another One - Adds To Record
2007-08-09 02:19:31
Barry Bonds didn’t waste any time adding to his home run record set yesterday. In fact, I didn’t even have a chance to blog about the record setting home run before Bonds has went and hit another one. This time it was a two-run shot into the water outside of AT&T Park for home run numer 757 of his career. The San Francisco fans were delighted as the Giants cruised to a 5-0 win over the Washington Nationals which assisted Giants’ skipper Bruce Bochy to his 1,000th managerial victory. Barry Bonds was quoted as saying “I’m pretty locked in right now and the atmosphere is a lot easier today”. It must be a great relief to the powerhitting Giant having finally surpassed the milestone that was so controversial due to the issues of steroid abuse surrounding Bonds. As many former MLB players turned commentators have openly stated, regardless of the steroid issues, nobody has brought up the fact that possibly many of the pitchers Bonds has faced throughout

Bobby Cox Breaks Record for Most Ejections
2007-08-14 22:15:43
Who cares about Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron’s home run record, Alex Rodriguez hitting his 500th home run, or Tom Glavine getting his 300th career victory. A record of more significant importance was set this season that eclipses all of those milestones by far. Bobby Cox, the venerable, crotchety and cantankerous skipper of the NL East’s Atlanta Braves has finally passed John McGraw for the most all time mamagerial ejections in baseball history Tuesday night. Home plate umpire Ted Barrett ejected Bobby Cox for arguing a called third strike on Chipper Jones to end the fifth inning in the Braves 5-4 victory at home against The San Francisco Giants. Bobby has been a good boy for almost 7 1/2 weeks without throwing a single ejectable tantrum, although Sunday night when the Braves were at Philly he came awful close to setting the record when he came marching out of the dugout to contest a call. I was at the game Sunday night and the Phillies, who are noted for their “b

Rookie Sensation Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers
2007-08-20 17:25:01
There’s a lot of talk going around about the Milwaukee Brewers Rookie Star third baseman Ryan Braun being a potential candidate for National League Rookie of the Year. Ryan Braun entered the 2007 season as the second best prospect in the Brewers organization according to Baseball America and he has been living up to the accolades of fans and critics. Braun has had an exceptional season thus far racking up a .343 batting average, 24 home runs and 62 RBI’s with 10 stolen bases. Braun was brought up by the Brewers on May 25th because after leading the Brewers with five home runs during spring training, Braun was assigned to Nashville of the Pacific Coast League to work on his defensive footwork and throwing. It is because of this late start to his season, he’s 46 plate appearances short of qualifying for the league lead in batting average and other statistics. Otherwise Braun’s statistics have him in the elite company of such former greats Joe DiMaggio, Johnny Mize

There is No Joy in Mudville

I’m no baseball historian due to the fact I’ve only been following the game for ten years shy of a half century. If my memory serves me well, there has never been a double sweep, dual elimination in the National League Divisional Series (NLDS). The disturbing events of this last week have broken the [...]

Manny Ramirez and the “Called Shot”
2007-10-17 00:06:52
Manny Ramirez ’s home run in the 6th inning was the stuff that sends chills down any baseball fan’s spine. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “called shot” in my lifetime. All the stories about Babe Ruth pointing his finger and unleashing the infamous home run are the stuff legends are made of, but tonight [...]
