Three-Point Stance: Start or Sit? Week Four
2007-09-28 05:58:00
We had to take a few days off. We admit it—we cracked under the pressure. And after three sub-par weeks in the picks and prognostications department, we here at This Just In Fantasy Sports decided it was time for some changes. So, we basically pink slipped everyone who had a hand in the mediocre “Three Point Stance ” columns of the past. We’re not sure if the straw that broke the camel’s back was labeling Deuce McAllister and Drew Brees “STARTs” last week or telling you to “SIT” Brett Favre. Regardless, the editor-in-chief had had enough, so we’ve hired a new staff of pickers and predictors. This group is still dedicated to providing not-so-obvious recommendations on a weekly basis. But whereas the previous group favored the French health care system, peace rallies, and alternative fuels, this new gaggle of TJI staffers values truth, justice, and the American way. And they are proud to present a more thoroughly-researched and more grounded-in-fact edition of the “Th

Three Point Stance: Start or Sit? Week 5
2007-10-05 22:47:00
While the rest of the fantasy pundits out there cover their rears with lists of 20 players at each position to start and sit, This Just In Fantasy Sports picks just 3.Gutsy, we know. But our track record has been fairly good this season. Where else could you get a recommendation to start Daunte Culpepper last week? To anyone that listened…you’re welcome. To anyone that started Ronald Curry or Eli Manning…well, hopefully you’ll give us a second chance.Remember, our focus is on the not-so-obvious choices. You know who the must-starts are. And we won’t waste your time by listing them here.Running Backs to Start :Larry Johnson vs. Jacksonville—Don’t look now, but LJ just might be back. Look for KC to pound it today and Larry will respond.Clinton Portis vs. Detroit—Reports are that he’s healthy and ready to touch the ball 15+ times against a soft D.Reggie Bush vs. Carolina—The well-rested #1 man in the Big Easy will make it look easy.Running Backs to Sit:Travis Henry vs.

On the Rise (Again)...Selvin Young
2007-10-04 21:27:00
This Just In Fantasy Sports has learned that Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana. Ain't that a kick in the bong? What exactly is the impact of this run-in with the law? It means that Henry might possibly face a suspension of one year from the NFL. This suspension could possibly begin immediately, from what we understand.Details of the matter are still sketchy, but we will monitor it closely for you.In the meantime, all owners of Travis Henry and anyone in need of RB help, you should add Selvin Young immediately.Very rarely do we jump the gun on this type of pick-up, but the ramifications of this could help you to turn your season around. Henry hadn't exactly been lighting up the league (although apparently he's been lighting up something else). Instead, he's pretty much been killing every owner that wasted a top 20 pick on him. Now's your chance for a fantasy 180. Good luck to you.

From the Mailroom: Derrick Ward or Brandon Jacobs?
2007-10-04 16:13:00
Lots of mail this week...let's take a look at two letters that might help our readers most:Al writes...Due to byes and injuries, I have to start a Giants RB. Which one should I start, Jacobs or Ward?Well, Al, that's one of the tougher calls of the week. All reports out of New Jersey are that Jacobs is ready to go this week. However, it looks like there'll be a 50-50 split for now. So should you trust that BJ is OK? Or will Ward continue to rack up solid numbers? Surely, someone has to emerge, but this week it looks like a toss up. We say give Jacobs the nod. He'll get the goalline carries, so we say use that fact to break the tie between the two.Andy from St. Paul, MN asks: Which two WR? Smith, Colston, Chambers, Holmes, or Edwards?Even though, he puts up the occasional goose egg, you cannot bench Steve Smith. We also feel that Braylon Edwards has earned un-benchable status, as well. The Browns will play from behind this weekend, and Derek Anderson and Edwards should hook up for at

Injury Insight: DEFCON Five
2007-10-03 04:48:00
A month ago, you thought you were pretty slick when you drafted Steven Jackson in the first round. You just knew he was going to bust out. And then when you grabbed Marc Bulger later in your draft, you were certain you had a dynamite 1-2 punch that would guarantee you'd blow out the competition week after week.Well, we hate to be the ones to tell you something you already know, but your ship is sinking. Don't worry, though, so is the ship of thousands of fantasy owners across the nation. The list of running back injuries reads like the first two rounds of a fantasy experts' mock draft:Steven Jackson, Brian Westbrook, Joseph Addai, Travis Henry, LaMont Jordan, Marvin Harrison, Laurence Maroney, Rudi Johnson, Deuce McAllister, Cadillac Williams, Brandon Jacobs...this is getting ridiculous. Who will be the next star to fall prey to the injury bug???And because we know that this list is just the tip of the iceberg and doesn't even include the likes of Anquan Boldin, Javon Walker, and Hi

As if bye weeks weren't bad enough, now fantasy owners are forced to deal with a rash of injuries. Never before have so many fantasy studs pulled up lame. Will they heal themselves in time for you to make the playoffs? No one knows for sure. Which is why you need us to help you pluck the diamonds from the rough that is your league's free agent pool.Go Get 'Em...Dwayne Bowe--If he's still on your waiver wire, he's a great pick-up now that he's the #1 option in KC.Brandon Jones--Put up solid numbers in the two weeks prior to the Titans' bye.James Jones--A solid fill-in for your WRs with the week off.Greg Jennings--If Favre likes him, you should, too.Michael Pittman--The Cadillac has stalled. Expect Pittman to outperform Earnest Graham over the long run.Ladell Betts--If you have the roster space, add him now in case Clinton Portis misses significant time with his knee injury.Joey Harrington--We can't believe it, either. Joey Harrington has become a serviceable fantasy player. A so

Three-Point Stance: Start or Sit? Week Six
2007-10-12 22:01:00
Last week saw us making some fairly sound picks, but we've still yet to hit our stride. Stick with us, dear readers, and you'll see TJI blossom into a juggernaut of prediction and prognostication.Actually, relatively speaking, we're not doing too shabby. We checked out CBS Sportsline's Start 'em or Sit 'em column from Week 5 and for a fantasy sports powerhouse, they leave a lot to be desired. Their start of the week was Brett Favre, who put up sub-par numbers. They also recommended starts for stinkers Jon Kitna, Vince Young, Drew Brees, and Brandon Marshall, and advised sits on several top players of the week including Cedric Benson, Philip Rivers, Vincent Jackson, and Randy McMichael.Makes us feel a lot better...on to this week's tipsQB to StartEli Manning @ Falcons--With one Manning off this week, the other steps it up.Brian Griese vs. Vikings--He'll exploit a poor pass defense.Kurt Warner vs. Carolina--Another poor defense set to get lit up by another retread.QB to SitBrett

NCAA Tournament Preview: East Region
2008-03-17 23:26:28
The beasts of the East, UNC, must be ticked with the way things turned out. In order to make it to the Final Four in San Antonio, they might have to beat Louisville or Tennessee and/or Indiana and/or Notre Dame. That's not right. As the number one overall seed, they deserve an easier path to the Alamodome. But, as a consolation, their first four games would all be played in Carolina. A friendly crowd can be the difference maker in a tough game, so this is key.And while at first glance the other highly seeded teams in this region are tough, in actuality, they've each got issues: Louisville hasn't shown us any proof that they have what it takes to make a title run; Tennessee's zany and unpredictable coach might be their undoing; Indiana has the talent, but the upheaval is going to be too much

It's NCAA Tournament Time!!!
2008-03-17 15:38:32
Well, after being chased out of yet another country, TJI is back, baby! And we're ready to rumble. If there's one thing our editors love more than fantasy football and the Dharma Initiative, it's gambling. And nothing provides more sports betting pleasure than the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament .So our return to glory won't be through NFL Draft Analysis. (Frankly, we find that as fun as a soggy piece of toast. We'll leave it to Mel Kiper. What is with his hair, by the way? It's time for a new look, boy-o.)Instead, we offer up a break down of the NCAA Tournament field. And just like our fantasy football coverage, our analysis will be spot-on. Count on TJI to help you win your office pool.So check back later today as we start to break down each region!

NCAA Tournament Breakdown: Final Four Picks
2008-03-20 06:01:58
If you've followed our coverage of the NCAA tournament (the first time we've ever done so, by the way) you've probably noticed that our regional champions include exactly zero shockers.Going in to the tourney, we viewed only 7 teams as having a real shot at the title. That's right, only 7: North Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Georgetown, Texas, Memphis, and UCLA. These 7 are so strong that we don't see anyone slipping by them from the lower seeds into the Final Four. Our Final Four picks were as follows:East: North CarolinaMidwest: GeorgetownSouth: TexasWest: UCLANo surprises there. And these four will provide some amazing games. We can't wait. Here's what will happen...National Semi-Finals PredictionsNorth Carolina over GeorgetownUCLA over TexasAnd finally...National Championship WinnerUCLAY

Many experts say UCLA has the easiest path to the Final Four. We call this the "kiss of death." Whenever the talking heads start singing your praises, you don't have a chance, right? You're jinxed for sure.Well, that's usually the case. And if you follow our fantasy football coverage, you know there's nothing we love more than proving the experts wrong. But--and we know this might cause you to cancel your subscription to TJI--in this case, we have to agree.UCLA has all the components of a champion. They're battle-tested, have multiple scoring threats, and they're well coach. Last year's run will serve them well, as they won't be distracted by the spotlight. And the biggest change from this year to last--Freshman stud Kevin Love--will help them, too.And when you take a look at the other tea

John Calipari is going to want to give Dan Marino a call one of these days. No, not to sign up for Nutri-system or borrow some Isotoners. The call's going to need to be made so the two can chat about not being able to win it all. Every winter, we cheered for ol' Danny Boy to will his team to the title. But it never happened. And many-a-March in the 90's were spent cheering on Calipari's UMass teams. But they couldn't pull it off, either. Now John Calipary has a new home, the University of Memphis and yet another 30-win squad. But unfortunately it is not, once again, the year of the Tigers. And we've got two words that sum up the reason why: Conference USA. Memphis needs to get out of that conference and play some real teams. Otherwise, tourney time is going to be more of the same year in, y

NCAA Tournament Breakdown: Midwest Region
2008-03-18 22:43:00
Have you noticed that none of the "experts" are bringing you much in the way of upsets this year? Last year, with a tournament that was by our accounts light on Cinderella stories, has apparently made everyone a little gun-shy.But think about it. In years past, what has made the tourney so enjoyable? It's the upsets, baby. It's what's either ruined your bracket or made you the king/queen of the office, if only for a day after you picked Winthrop or Rider or Holy Cross on a whim.Well, we here at TJI think that when it comes to the Elite Eight and Final Four, the Cinderella stories will once again be sparse. But if there's a region where some drama might occur, it's the Midwest . Clemson and Vandy are a bit over-rated, as is chic upset pick USC, and Gonzaga is not the Gonzaga of old.And no on

Breaking Down the First Round
2008-03-22 09:07:35
Talk about two completely different days. Cinderella apparently had the day off Thursday. But she showed up Friday dressed in Versace and accompanied by a huge chip on her shoulder. Guess she was ticked about not being invited last year because she worked her way through the dance like a prom queen who didn't know the punch was spiked. And wasn't it fun to watch? Even if a couple arms of your brackets were obliterated (and they shouldn't be if you followed our advice), you have to admit it was fun to watch. Was there a better ending than the overtime thriller between Drake and Western Kentucky? Could you have been more shocked to see Siena, Villanova, and San Diego advance? Maybe you were someone that predicted all this madness. If so, let us know. We want to pick your brain. As for our picks

Dot Dot Dot...TJI's Sports Week in Review
2008-04-21 20:09:05
Now that things have finally settled down at our new headquarters here in Mongolia (don't ask; all we can say is that when it comes to text messages, delete doesn't mean delete), we're able to get back into the swing of things. But what's a fantasy football site to do in the middle of spring? Focus on the upcoming draft? We'd rather be strapped to a chair and forced to watch all three seasons of Grey's Anatomy...back to back...with commentary by all those annoying, sniveling characters. There's such little drama that will occur on this year's draft day, and even less fantasy impact, that we just can't bear to delve into it. Why not wait until after it's over to break it all down? Why does it need to be crammed down our throats for three months? We take back that comment about Grey's Anatomy

Dot Dot Dot...TJI Sports Week in Review
2008-04-28 22:23:34
Wow. What a draft. We live for this time of year. Things sure will be better next year now that we have this fine crop of young players ready to make an impact in this league......Now that we're done playing the part of Detroit Lions fan, we'll share our real insights and opinions. Let's preface our comments by saying we here at TJI watched exactly 0 minutes of draft coverage. We have, however, poured over (i.e. examined for about 3 minutes) the results and are now ready to comment......First of all, it looks like the Patriots had another stellar draft. How they get to cheat, lose a draft pick and still end up with awesome players, we just don't know......Best QB drafted? We won't find out in '08. Matt Ryan will be solid, but not this year. Rookie QB's just don't matter. And they are fanta

2008-05-06 22:24:35
Welcome to TJI's Sports Week in Review (TJISWIR), your one-stop recap of all the important sports stories of the past week. Our emphasis here, of course, is fantasy football. But since we're basically an eternity away from draft day, we might as well rant on some other topics while we have the time......But football IS in the air, after all, with the draft just barely behind us and the first mini-camps wrapping up. Seeing the LT Sunday Conversation on Sportscenter yesterday got us thinking...Who's going #1 in your fantasy football draft this year?......Tomlinson is hurt. He should be okay for opening day, but can you trust in that? If you're drafting first, it has to be a stone-cold, dead-on lock. Does LT fit the bill coming off a knee injury? We'll say this, he certainly sounds like he's
