Honey the Domestic God
2007-08-16 17:40:43
It’s no secret. In our house Honey does a lot of the ‘woman’s work.’ We have an equal opportunity household.  Every Saturday morning we share the responsibility of cleaning the house. He dusts and vacuums. I tackle the bathrooms. Household chores like laundry and feeding the dogs get done by whichever of us can get to it first. And in the interest of time the first person home from work cooks dinner. At this time I have the longer commute so Honey is usually the weeknight dinner chef. I really appreciate everything he does for us and I thought he knew that. But then I notice a comment he left on Menu Recap Monday. After reading all of your compliments on our menu last week I guess he felt that the record needed to be set straight. Here’s the comment he left: What you ladies seem to be missing here is that I (and not my lovely and beautiful wife whom I love so much) cook 99% of the meals we eat. So, direct your admiration where its due… Honey a.k.

WFMW - Homemade gel ice packs
2007-08-15 09:35:54
Toddlers are constantly bumping into things or falling over their own feet. Most of the times daddy or mommy can ‘kiss it and make it all better.’ Other times they injuries require a little more TLC, a little time with an ice pack to keep the swelling down and reduce bruising. It feels like we’re reaching into the freezer at least once a week to put ice on a boo-boo. Most of the gel ice packs are just too big and putting solid ice on a goose bump on your head, well, it’s just not comfortable. A month ago my mom saw a recipe for homemade gel ice packs and I decided to give it a try. I used some snack sized baggies so our ice packs would be more child-sized and added some pink neon food coloring to the mixture. The very next day I got the chance to use test the gel pack. Princess wasn’t watching where she was walking, missed the bottom step and smacked her forehead on something hard - I think it may have been something plastic that should have been in

Oh, me! Oh, my!
2007-08-20 20:55:42
I’m not putting up the menu recap this week.  Instead I’ll give you the quick version. I can’t remember what Honey cooked for dinner Monday through Wednesday.  Thursday I made Tater Tot Casserole and showed Princess that the mommy CAN cook.  My mom showed up on Friday and had a treat of steamed clams, mashed potatoes and corn on the cob waiting when I got home from work.  It was quite yummy!  But the mommy brain kicked in again over the weekend.  I have no idea what we ate even though I cooked again one of those nights. Now on to something much more interesting and a bit overdue.  Aimee tagged me for the Moaning Meme a while back. At first I thought it would be so much fun getting things off my chest. An excuse to moan about stuff? Sure. Sounds good to me. Three weeks after being tagged I still hadn’t finished. I kept going between serious, deep issues to whine about  and then I’d try keeping things light and amusing. Neither one felt right so

A Moment Almost Missed
2007-08-19 20:37:26
The little curly haired girl crawled out of her mother’s lap and headed over to the box of toys. It was time to pick out a special friend to take to bed to be cuddled through the night. After careful consideration she picks up Baby Bop. As per her usual habit she lays the toy on its tummy, finds a little blanket and begins to tuck Baby Bop into bed. The blanket doesn’t go down right the first time so she lifts it up to try again. As she does the little girl notices that Baby Bop has a friend. In the pocket on the front of Baby Bop’s outfit is a little stuffed piggy. The little girl picks up her toy and asks “What this?” Her mommy repies, “It’s Baby Bop’s toy.” “Oh, what this called?” she said pointing to the pink toy. “It’s a piggy” The little girl is curious about the piggy. She wants to pull it out, look at it and ask more questions. Her mommy just wants her to crawl in bed and go to sleep.

Any chance of an earlier flight?
2007-08-23 18:25:39
Dear Honey, Please come home as soon as you can. My mom is a big help but it’s just not the same. It is so hard to fall asleep at night with out you. I’m used to drifting off to dream land with my ice cold toes nestled up against your warm body. The dogs are trying to help me out with this but they are being typical Irish Setters and doing things their way. Screw Ball has the right idea. He comes up on the bed, goes over to your side and nuzzles up next to me with his back right up against my legs. I think he is turning into a professional snuggler. But Goofy Girl. Oh, Goofy Girl! She will only lay in one spot, her usual spot. She comes up on the bed, on MY side of the bed, circles once and lays right on top of my feet and ankles successfully pushing Milton away. I try to move her to your side of the bed but she is so uncooperative. Instead I fall back on the evil tactic of checking her bad ear. That gets her off the bed REAL fast and I don’t even have to be

My Sesame Street Persona
2007-08-23 10:37:36
H/T to Kristen for the link to this test.  I would have never guessed that this character would be my Sesame Street persona but the description fits me to a T. Your Score: Guy Smiley You scored 60% Organization, 38% abstract, and 37% extroverted! This test measured 3 variables. First, this test measured how organized you are. Some muppets like Cookie Monster make big messes, while others like Bert are quite anal about things being clean. Second, this test measured if you prefer a concrete or an abstract viewpoint. For the purposes of this test, concrete people are considered to gravitate more to mathematical and logical approaches, whereas abstract people are more the dreamers and artistic type. Third, this test measured if you are more of an introvert or an extrovert. By definition, an introvert concentrates more on herself and an extrovert focuses more on others. In this test an introvert was somebody that either tends to spend more time alone or thinks more about herself.

WFMW: Storing Cards You Receive
2007-08-22 08:00:13
Throughout the year cards arrive in the mail for special occasions. I have never been able to bring myself to throw them away and used to simply throw them in a big box in my closet. Every now and then I would rifle through the box reading some of the cards and looking at signatures and special notes written inside. But I always found myself wondering what year I got that card and if there was a better way of storing them. One day I was walking through an office supply store and I saw something that made me immediately think of my stash of cards. It was a 26 section file folder. I started with my Christmas cards filing them away using one folder per year. When Princess was born I bought another on just for her. It will be able to hold all the cards she gets for Baptism, birthdays, Easter, Halloween from birth all the way through college. It is really great being able to flip through the Christmas cards, see photo cards of friends and family and know when that picture was taken.

Hi Mom!
2007-08-27 14:01:13
When I started my blog I wasn’t too sure what would become of it.  What would I post here?  Who would want to read it?  Would I abandon T with Honey in a month or two when the novelty wore off?  Even more important, would I ever post anything I wouldn’t want my mom to know about? This uncertainty led me to keep my blog relatively secret.  Honey was the first person I told.  After that I sent an email to a few close friends and fellow bloggers that contained the URL of my blog.  Over the past 6 months I’ve let only one or two others know about my little spot on the blogosphere.  It was a nice arrangement and I enjoy having my little secret but a little while ago I realized that I may need let one more person into the know.  My mom. It’s been killing me the past few months trying to remember, “Did I tell mom about that story or did I only write about it on my blog?”  Honey let the cat out of the bag sometime Memorial Day weekend but when I re

Mom did the cooking last week. It’s a good thing she was here because our team lead took vacation last week. So the week that Honey was away in Japan I had to handle all customer issues and got pager duty at work. I left work late every day and would never have been able to pick Princess up from day care on time. It would have been take-out every night if we wanted to eat before 7:30 pm. But as of today: I’m no longer on call. And Honey is back. Life is starting to get back on track! I’ve often heard the phrase ask and you shall receive.  I didn’t know that applied to asking on your blog.  Honey got an earlier flight back home!  He had Princess back in his arms a whole 4 hours earlier than originally scheduled.  That may not seem like a lot but that’s an eternity to a 2 year old and her momma.  Now back to the menu recap. Hose Hijinks
2007-08-31 09:24:29
Princess and I ventured outside to the back yard to have fun on her play set. When she got to her slide a horrified look came across her face as she yelled out, “Mommy, there’s pee on my slide!” Normally Screw Ball will leave her play set alone but The Runner is visiting with my mom. When the two male dogs get together a little marking goes on, even though all of our dogs have been altered. I knew I had to act quickly if I wanted to keep the tears at bay. I turned to Princess and said the magical words “Let’s get the hose and rinse it off.” Oooo! The hose! No toddler can resist the magical happiness of a garden hose. This cheered her up. We went over to the hose box at the side of the house. I handed Princess the end with the nozzle and told her to take it over to the slide. As she walked the business end over to the slide I pulled the hose out of the box. When Princess reached the slide she took aim and tried to squeeze the trigger. No luc

Traveling with a Toddler to Texas
2007-08-30 09:52:31
This weekend we’ll be heading down to Texas to visit my in-laws. I keep hoping for good weather so I can spend most of the time in their pool with Princess. I’ve never been particularly close to Honey’s parents. Even when we get past the very small language barrier (Russian is their first language, but their English is exceptional) we dont’ have much to talk about.  We just don’t see the world the same way. But spending time with them isn’t what has me worrying this time. This is the first time we are flying there with Princess. I’m worried about having to navigate the nightmare known as ‘flying on an airplane post 9/11′ with a toddler. She’s pretty good on the car trips to visit my family so we’ll be employing some of those tactics (Cheerios and DVDs). However there are aspects to airplane travel that, frankly, scare the bejeezus out of me. First there is the security checkpoint. I don’t like trying to nav

WFMW: Sock Containment
2007-08-29 06:00:19
Princess has small socks and even when paired they tend to get lost in the drawer.  Or in the laundry. To keep all of the socks contained I got two of those mesh laundry bags.  One bag hangs on the edge of the hamper and dirty socks go in there.  Most of the time I can just throw the entire sock bag into the washer inside the laundry bag with a load of lights.  The washer and dryer haven’t been able to eat any socks on me since I started doing this. When clean socks come out of the dryer I put the pairs together and they go into the clean sock laundry bag.  Then socks and bag go into her sock drawer.  When I need to get a pair of socks for Princess I only have to grab the bag, open it up and take the pair of my choice.  No more digging through shirts and tights trying to find where the butterfly socks are hiding. Keeping small socks contained using mesh laundry bags works for me.   For more Works-for-Me-Wednesday tips visit Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer.

WFMW: Snack drawer
2007-09-26 03:43:39
One of the little things I do to save money is by keeping a snack drawer at work. Buying snacks out of the vending machine can get expensive. If you’re like me and want a little something to munch on in the middle of the afternoon you can easily feed a five dollar bill into one of those machines. Even worse is the selection. Where I work the vending machines are filled maybe once per week. After the second day your choices are limited and usually the healthier stuff is gone. Sometimes you want the cholesterol laden potato chips but other days you want something a little better for your body. I never use all the drawers in my desk so I set aside one of them for snacks. I fill it up with snack sized bags of snack food I bought at the grocery store, a little bit of candy and some emergency lunch options. Easy open cans of soup. Those single serving pouches of macaroni and cheese. Throw in some disposable bowls and I’m set for any last minute hunger attacks - even aft

You know you’re getting old
2007-09-24 21:11:08
…when you play Memory with your toddler and try to lose but end up with a giant pile of cards anyway. Or maybe I just have a serious case of mommy brain. Either way it was so sad. I would flip over the first card. Winnie the Pooh. Inside my head I thought, “The other Pooh is in the top left corner. In the middle of the bottom row is Tinkerbell. Princess knows where the other Tinkerbell is!” So I’d flip over the card in the middle of the bottom row and reveal Tinker… Pooh! Mommy made another match. I made 6 matches in a row before I finally missed again. We were only playing with 22 cards/11 pairs of cards. Luckily we have only had the game for 2 days and Princess is still having fun simply uncovering the Disney characters and cheering when anyone makes a match. But I know those days are numbered. For the next game I tried a different tactic. I simply didn’t pay attention as the cards were revealed. Princess had 7 matches before I final

Get by with a little help from her dog
2007-09-22 09:38:15
I know why my daughter was moved up to the 3 year old class. She’s way too smart. Princess and I were playing Hide-And-Go-Seek taking turns with each role. For the first 10 minutes of play she was happy to go hide while I washed the dinner dishes and counted to 10 very s-l-o-w-l-y. Then she wanted me to hide while she counted. The first time I hid I simply opened one of the kitchen cabinet doors at the bottom of the island and crouched down behind it. It took a little for Princess to find me but eventually she followed one of our dogs to the far side of the kitchen. And there she found me! Next time I hid behind the love seat in the living room. After Princess yelled “10! Ready or not HERE I COME!” I could hear her talking softly to Screw Ball. She rounded the corner from the kitchen into the dining room muttering to the dog “Where is Mommy, Screw Ball?” Being the obedient hunting dog he is Screw Ball lead her straight across the room and around t

More Wedding Details and Dress Pictures
2007-09-21 14:11:45
Mom noticed that someone asked to see pictures of my dress in the comment of my last post. Being the typical must-brag-about-my-daughter type of mom that she is I found some digital copies of wedding pictures in my Inbox last night along with this message: You have wrong information on your wedding memory page. There were 225 people at the wedding. Your ring bearer’s favorite vegetable is carrots. You had carrots and corn. You were only going to have carrots and I talked you into doing corn for the kids sake. I believe there was fruit cocktail as an appetizer but not positive. There were two trays for the guests while waiting for us. One was vegetables & dip and I think the other one was a dutch (meats and cheese) plate. Ice cream was served as dessert. Everyone toasted with champagne or sparkling grape juice. The wedding party, my table and Honey’s parents had better champagne and the rest had a cheap brand. Thanks for the correction, Mom. No, seriously. I&rsquo

Mother of the Groom Dress (what not to wear on your son’s big day)
2007-09-20 11:45:12
My cousin is getting married this fall and I need to find a dress to wear for the wedding. After browsing the dresses at a few stores online and having no luck I decided to hunt the internet for guidelines on what I should wear. In my searching I finally found what I was looking for: Rules for Dresses At Weddings. I’m loving this post. Not only did it give me a few suggestions on what to wear (sheath or A-line dress in a pretty color or print) it affirmed what I thought were the rules on what not to wear to a wedding. In particular, the rules my MIL wanted to or actually did break for my wedding. Mothers of little boys be advised. The following story is what you should NOT do for your son’s wedding day if you love him and want to be thought of fondly. When the topic of dresses came up my MIL had no idea what to wear to our wedding. In fact she pestered us so much that we eventually decided it would be easier if we just flew to their place, went shopping with her and

WFMW: More Effective Coffee Drinking (updated)
2007-09-19 06:45:14
On days where my daughter has me up frequently during the night or I’m just plain exhausted but don’t have the luxury of being able to crawl back into be I have found coffee to be a lifesaver. But there is a certain way of drinking my coffee that works better at keeping me on my toes. I like to think of it as the equivalent of an IV coffee drip. I’ve found that by slowly sipping my coffee I get better effects and drink less coffee. Start out by drinking 1/4 cup at your normal pace. Then slow down and take only one or two sips of my coffee every 10-15 minutes. By keeping my coffee intake at a paced yet continuous rate the caffeine level in my system stays at a constant level. A single cup of coffee can last up to 2 hours and I don’t suffer from a major caffeine rush and the tragic crash when it wears off later on. This also means that I haven’t put as much of the magical wake-up chemical into my body. I can keep myself awake enough to get through the

Menu Recap Monday 9/10 - 9/16
2007-09-17 09:19:23
My favorite meal this week came on Saturday.  The temperatures have dropped quite a bit around here and the leaves on the trees have been changing colors for 2 weeks now.  Autumn is most definitely in the air.  And that means more squash on our table. During the fall months squash is cheap and the variety plentiful.  Hubbard and spaghetti squash for something a little more savory.  Acorn, butternut and buttercup are a sweet treat when sliced in half, baked for 40 minutes and sprinkled with a little bit of brown sugar.  When I’m in the mood (and have time) to cook there are always sugar pumpkins for soup, bread and pie.  Yummy! Starting this month the price for squash starts to pummmet.  The highest we will have to pay for any of these varieties is 59¢/pound.  And by Halloween some will be as low as 19¢/ pound.  Bring on fall foods and let’s eat squash! Equal opportunity parenting

Q: What drives a Honda Odyssey every Saturday to take a two year old to adult and child soccer program where they will run around on turf, doing funny warm-ups like standing on one foot and attempting to kick a soccer ball into a net? A: Honey, the soccer dad! Yup, he’s a soccer dad. Princess is attending a program for parent and child.  Frankly, I’m not really sure who’s more excited about Saturday morning soccer, Honey or Princess. After he signed her up I mentioned that I’m now a soccer mom. “Um, no. I don’t think so.” And then he proceeded to list the reasons why I am not a soccer mom, but he is a soccer dad. I don’t play soccer. He’s the soccer playing parent. On top of that I’m not the one that drives the mini van. I got to drive the mini van for 2 weeks when we bought it. After 2 wonderful mini van filled weeks my new office location was ready and once again I had the longer commute. Thus I got the commuter car b

Shopping disappointment

Meg at Fried Okra has declared that September is New Jeans Month. She’s on the hunt for a new pair of jeans and is looking for some help. I was going to write up a fun and informative post with pictures of my favorite pair of jeans. They are Levi’s 515 boot cut jeans and I love them. But I bought them 2 years ago. Last week I finally remembered where I bought them. This weekend I found myself at the mall and decided to head over to JC Penney to get another pair. When I got to JC Penney I was so disappointed. I found the jeans but the material is different. My 2 year old pair is made with a nice stonewashed durable denim. The ones they had in the store were so thin! And made with a different blend of fabrics. I have a different pair of Levis that I bought last year which are made with the thin, new blend of denim. The newer denim tends to sort of wrinkle up and I find myself wanting to iron them. And there are places where the material is starting to wear thi

Some local teens made my week today. Tonight I had to stop by the church to pick up the materials for the CCD class I’m going to teach. It was a little before 7 PM and a group of boys had gathered outside the local library. Between their faces and the fact that they all had bicycles I’d guess that they were 14 to 15-years old. The library is at an intersection where I need to make a left turn. As I drive by I hear them yell out. “Hey, Baby Lookin’ hot, bay-beeee! Whooo!” The light is red so I stop in the turning land and start to look around. I had to see who they were yelling at but there was no one else around. My car was the only one on the road. No! They couldn’t be cat-callin’ at me. I’m twice their age! What kind of drugs are they on? Maybe they need glasses. I looked at the light. The light is still red and the boys are still making some noise and whistling in my general direction. I glanced in the car mirrors. No my

Project Tear-free Hair Care
2007-10-04 15:17:31
Thank you for all of the wonderful hints and suggestions you left on my post yesterday.  Today we officially kicked off Project Tear-free Hair Care, a.k.a Save Princess’s Curly Hair. After skimming through the comments I found 2 things I could try this morning. First, the brush is gone and I will never touch her head with one ever again.  I found an old wide tooth comb that we used instead.  After soaking her locks with detangling spray the comb navigated through the knots with much more ease than the brush.  I think I’ll have to get a pick the next time I get to the store and see if that works even better. On top of that we let her watch TV while tackling her hair.  It seems that Dragon Tales are enough of a distraction to reduce the crying.  Notice I said reduce.  Princess still got upset but at least she kept it down to a mild simpering. However that let to a new problem - trying to turn the TV off and leave the house before the show was over! I’m pretty su

Save Princess’s Hair
2007-10-03 08:54:19
I’m thinking about shaving Princess ’s head. My daughter has beautiful curly hair that she inherited from her daddy. Combined with her round face and rosy cheeks she could easily be Shirley Temple’s double. But almost every morning that hair is a source of tears in our house. Although Princess has developed a love of bows and barrettes she despises having her hair done. If she feels the slightest tug or pulling because you have encountered a know the water works start up. I know I’m lucky that she is willing to sit fairly still and have her hair done but the whining and crying and flinching is driving me nuts. We have tried various shampoos, brushes, using just our fingers to untangle and style. Things that are helping include a satin pillowcase (less tangles in the morning), Loreal Vanilla Smoothie 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner for kids and detangling spray. But even using all of those we still had crying this morning. And since Meg’s friend Prisci

Fashion Failure
2007-10-01 18:18:12
I’ve never been on top of the latest fashions. Hip and trendy are 2 words that I don’t think anyone has ever used to describe me. I’m a software engineer. We’re not known for being fashionable. When you add in my frugal nature to the mix, well it’s amazing that I know Banana Republic, Coach and Jimmy Choo exist. This was my latest encounter with the world of fashion accessories and name brands. As I was sitting in church the other weekend I noticed the purse of a woman two pews in front of us. It was made with a pretty fabric in a bright pink and green pattern and had been sewn to have a quilted look. I sat there thinking to myself “I hope the person that made that bag has a stand at our parish craft fair this fall.” The handbag was a little more homemade looking than I will normally go for but the adorable fabric was winning me over. If I could get something like that to replace my old schwag bag for work it would be worth forking over

What a mighty fine man!
2007-10-14 18:46:56
Oh, yes he is. (can you name that song?) Honey, my wonderful husband is as sweet as his blog alias. And when I saw The Man Meme I knew I had to do it! 1. Who is your man? Honey - domestic god, penguin-loving computer geek, loving father and husband. 2. How long have you been together? In love not dating anyone else and exchanging mutual, loving kisses… that would mean we’ve been together for 11 years 3. How long did you date? I think we were “dating” for 1.5 years before getting engaged. 4. How old is your man? The same as me. Oops! Wait! That would have been correct yesterday. He’s 32 now. 5. Who eats more? Tough call. In a single sitting I think he can put more away than me. But total consumption per day I usually eat more. 6. Who said “I love you” first? I think he did. See #23. 7. Who is taller? Honey. 8. Who sings better? Me. Definitely me! 9. Who is smarter? I value my marriage so I’ll say we’re equal. (It wouldn&rsq

One person can be smart but people are dumb
2007-10-12 13:55:30
Why are good, smart, intelligent parents that can read and follow instructions being punished because others can’t follow directions? I am so tired of having products recalled or locked up because people can’t use them correctly. First cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine is locked up and requires an ID check before being bought and we are limited to purchasing only one product containing this medication per day. This is all because people are making methamphetamine out of it. In an effort to get the drug off the streets our wise government decided to simply make it more difficult to obtain. When my daughter and I came down with a cold on the same day I ended up drinking ton of children’s cold medicine to get a proper dosage for myself because I had to choose between buying adult or child cold medication. I couldn’t get both. Luckily I am intelligent enough to look up the adult dosage on the internet and do the math to figure out just how many teaspoon
