Everyday Mommy’s Two Year Anniversary 2007-07-13 05:03:17 I’ve officially been blogging since July 13, 2005. This is a reprint of my very first post which originally appeared at EverydayMommy
.blogspot.com.
Let’s Play
There’s nothing quite like playing in the garage on a 94 degree, sticky-humid July afternoon. You know the feeling. Your toddler has developed a fascination with the contents of the garage including tools, a broken Eureka upright that is being kept “because”, three empty picture frames, a leaky garden hose and a box of flatware that you bought at K-Mart during your college years which turned out to be a mistake. The flatware, not college. Seems it wasn’t really stainless.
Anyway, your toddler decides that it will be great fun if you play a game called “Kitchen”! This seems odd to you, seeing as you’re in the garage, but you go along with it because you’re tired and it appears as though this game may allow you to sit down. He maneuvers the big red and yellow Cozy Coupe, now faded to Read more:Anniversary
Momma, Are You Asleep? 2007-07-11 18:19:15 These were the words that roused me at 1:30am this morning.
“What’s wrong Baby?” I asked.
“Nothing. I just want to be with you guys,” he replied, standing next to our bed, clutching his pillow and little toy chimp.
In a sleep induced stupor I agreed (I know, I know) and pulled him into our bed. This simple act ensured a good night’s sleep for our darling son and a spotty night’s sleep for Mom and Dad.
Thus my desperate need to lay down this afternoon around 3pm. Johnny crawled up next to me, just to chat me up about why I was laying down at this unusual hour.
“Why don’t we take a little snooze Honey? You and Momma
?” I said in a failed attempt to obtain some quiet.
“But, I’m really not sleepy Momma,” he said earnestly.
“Well, Honey. Momma is very, very tired. I didn’t sleep very well last night.”
“Oh, Momma!” he said, taking my face in his little five year-old hands. &ldq
When You Pray, Say…III 2007-07-09 22:49:03 “Shouldn’t we listen to God when we pray? After all, isn’t that what prayer is all about? Having a dialogue with God?”
Actually? No. Prayer is simply what you or I say to God. It isn’t thinking good thoughts, woolgathering or being still so that we can hear God speak. Prayer is man talking to God. It might be praising Him, pleading with Him or petitioning Him, but it’s always our words spoken to God. It’s not a dialogue, but a monologue.
“But, isn’t learning to be silent essential to prayer?”
There is no question that Scripture clearly instructs us to pray. It tells us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Example after example is given of man and of Christ Himself speaking to God the Father in prayer (John 17, John 11:41-42). But, no example is given of anyone conjuring up silence in an attempt to hear God’s voice. We are never instructed to manipulate our thoughts to produce an altered state, to reach for an ethereal whisper which Read more:hellip

MOO! When Mom Is Playmate 2007-07-09 04:04:13
“Momma, can we go out and play in the pool?” Johnny asked at 7:30am this morning.”Sure, Honey,” I said. “After Mom starts a load of laundry, makes the beds and cleans the blue bathroom.”
“Okay, Momma. I’ll wait,” he replied sweetly.
Such is the daily challenge for the MOO. The Mother of One is frequently Chief Playmate
. Kids love to play and play is an essential part of childhood. When there are brothers or sisters in the family there are built-in playmates. Not so for the MOO. And, while I love to play with my son, to be a part of the wonder he finds in each new day, I know that playing with other children is a must. Practically speaking, the day-to-day requirements of maintaining a home suffer when mom is on call for constant play time.
Arranging play time for your child can be a challenge. As a MOO (or former MOO for you MOTs and MOFs) how do you handle making sure there is ample play time? How much priority do you p

Jules’ Diner 2007-07-07 02:13:02
This is a quick and easy supper which everyone can fix to suit their own taste. My favorite part is the Pico de Jules
.
JULES’ BEEF & BLACK BEAN BURRITOS
1 lb ground beef
14 oz can black beans, drained
14 oz can red enchilada sauce
1 cup sharp cheddar, grated
Sour cream
Pico de Jules’ salsa (recipe here-make ahead)
10″ fresh flour tortillas
Brown ground beef in large skillet over medium heat and season with kosher salt to taste. When been is browned add the red enchilada sauce. Increase heat to medium high and reduce sauce, about 10 minutes. Beef should be well coated with sauce, but not soupy. The enchilada sauce provides all the seasoning you’ll need.
Warm the black beans in a sauce pan till just warmed. Don’t stir too much or the beans will become mushy. Warm the tortillas in the microwave with damp paper towels.
Assemble burritos by spooning approximately 2 tablespoons of beef and 2 tablespoons of beans into center of tortilla. Add cheese, Read more:Diner

Kim at Hiraeth shares a deeply comforting word from C.H. Spurgeon about the faithfulness of our God.
Rebekah at Sweet Tea With Lemon writes about A Woman Who Fears the Lord, a post in which she isn’t afraid to share her thoughts on idle chatter found on some Christian blogs.
Carla at Reflections of the Times says, “We blind ourselves to the Word, by our own preference. What a shame that truly is to stifle the Word of the Lord just so that we can comfort ourselves in the (false) knowledge that we already know what it says, and what it means.” Be sure to read the rest of her post.

MOO! I Don’t Want to Share! 2007-07-16 05:47:43
Being the mother of an only child has some distinct advantages. One challenge the MOO will never face are sibling rivalries. But, the flip side of that coin is the lack of a sibling for companionship, encouragement and learning. The only child does not have to learn to share his toys for there is not a little brother who desires them.
As a MOO, or former MOO, how do you approach teaching your child to share? Read more:Share

Sometimes you just need to empty the pantry and all you’ve really got are odds-n-ends. That’s how I created this recipe. I call it…
JULES’ ACCIDENTAL SOUP
1 yellow onion, minced
1 lb ground beef
3-4 cans Swanson chicken broth
1 14oz can Del Monte diced tomatoes with garlic & onion
1 14oz can Sylvia’s mixed greens
1 14oz can great northern beans
1 14oz can sliced mushrooms, drained
House seasoning
Saute’ the onion in a bit of olive oil in a large stockpot till tender. Add the ground beef and brown thoroughly. Add remaining ingredients and stir till well combined. Bring just to a boil then reduce to low simmer. Allow to simmer for 30 minutes. Serve with crusty bread. The greens add a wonderfully rich and slightly smoky flavor. Read more:Jules

When You Pray, Say…IV 2007-07-16 21:30:52 “[in Calvin’s day]…Subjective feeling and emotion reigned supreme over the objective revelation of Scripture. Similarly, today the subjective, experiential, self-oriented, “touchy-feely” secular mind of the 1960s has come home to roost in the evangelical world.” - Sinclair Ferguson
Thus the popularity of the contemplative approach to prayer. Udo W. Middelmann said,
“Our age has largely replaced real discussions of theological, philosophical, and cultural content with ‘personal’ testimony, anecdotal experience, and private views.”
Our age has also largely replaced the authentic, verifiable voice of God with esoteric experience, emotional highs and altered states created by pagan practices. God’s Word is now viewed as an accessory, a map or a helpful manual. Contemplative prayer embraces a high view of man and his felt needs and a low view of God and His written word. Study of God’s Word is viewed as tedium or punishment. True delight, they say, is found in the re Read more:hellip
All You Do Is Stay Home 2007-07-19 20:30:06 This is an unofficial Everyday Mommy opinion poll. For this question I am particularly interested in hearing from the gentleman. If you are a husband and father who is devoted to the Lord, I’d love to hear from you.
Ladies, if your man is a Godly husband and father, would you mind sharing this poll with him and relaying his response?
Question of the Day: As a husband and father who loves the Lord, what would you say to a man who tells his wife,
“I work hard all day. All you do is stay home.”
Note: The wife is devoted and diligent to the Lord, her home and her family. Your input is appreciated.
Laundry List 2007-07-19 10:27:42 I try to avoid laundry list posts in which I share a rundown of the banal atrocities which accompany suburban living. No one cares what I had for lunch, what I did at Wal-Mart or how my diet is failing. There are millions of blogs where one can find this sort of riveting content on a daily basis.
But, since I’m long on errands and short on time I thought I’d do a bullet list to hit the highlights of this unusual week. I’m ranting a bit, so hit eject to avoid the tussle. Here we go:
I purchased a can of Castleberry Hot Dog Chili sauce to make chili dogs at home. We ate them last night. This morning I caught a news report that Castlebarry Hot Dog Chili has been recalled due to contamination with botulism. We await the symptoms.
My barely six month old Cuisinart Coffee mill, purchased at Costco for $19.95, went belly-up this morning. Needless to say I’m not very pleased. I expect a lot from a company that has the chutzpah to charge $149.00 for a coffee pot Read more:Laundry

Stickin’ Up for Momma 2007-07-22 14:23:19 This weekend greeted me with a summer cold, with a sore throat leading the way. Wishing to give Momma
a smidge of peace and quiet, the boys retreated to a movie in the master bedroom for a father-son bonding experience. Johnny plopped on our bed as Rich hunted for the remote on my night table which was strewn with Ricola lozenges, tissues and a bottle of Chloroseptic spray.
“Where did she put the remote? I can’t find it in all this junk.” Everyday Daddy said, sifting through my cold memorabilia.
Johnny piped up, “It’s her night table. Let her do what she wants.”
That’s my boy!
p.s. This produced a huge grin from Everyday Daddy. He’s proud of his boy for stickin’ up for his Momma.
The Lord’s Day 2007-07-22 05:01:49
Psalm 112
Praise the Lord!
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
who greatly delights in his commandments!
His offspring will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house,
and his righteousness endures forever.
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;
he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will never be moved;
he will be remembered forever.
He is not afraid of bad news;
his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.
His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,
until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever;
his horn is exalted in honor.
The wicked man sees it and is angry;
he gnashes his teeth and melts away;
the desire of the wicked will perish!

The Nature of the Blogging Beast 2007-07-25 08:09:18 Last night a friend phoned me. Her voice was filled with concern, frustration and questioning. Seems some well-meaning folks decided that they knew just what to publish on her blog. Their conviction on a matter of concern should be embraced by all, it seems, so they pursued and cajoled my friend to trumpet their cause. By employing high school behavior, they served my friend a big ol’ bowl of woe.
The nature of blogging produces the above behavior. You know the old saying, “Familiarity breeds contempt”? This is especially true of blogging. As regular readers of a blog or blogs we come to know the author as we partake of their life as it is conveyed in their writing. This lends a feeling of relationship which can produce a sense of obligation.
“Why, I’m a regular reader, a regular commenter! Therefore some debt is owed to me. I know you! I read about your kids in the kindergarten play, your crowded mini-van, your trip to the Grand Canyon, your g Read more:Blogging

The Therapeutic Gospel 2007-07-24 05:44:07 “What may be the most famous chapter in all of western literature portrays the appeal of a “therapeutic gospel.”
“In his chapter entitled “The Grand Inquisitor,” Fyodor Dostoevsky imagines Jesus returning to sixteenth century Spain (The Brothers Karamazov, II:5:v). But Jesus is not welcomed by church authorities. The cardinal of Seville, head of the Inquisition, arrests and imprisons Jesus, condemning him to die…The Grand Inquisitor, representing the voice of this misguided church, interrogates Jesus in his prison cell…”We have corrected Your work,” the inquisitor says to Jesus.
“The inquisitor’s gospel is a therapeutic gospel. It’s structured to give people what they want, not to change what they want. It centers exclusively around the welfare of man and temporal happiness. It discards the glory of God in Christ. It forfeits the narrow, difficult road that brings deep human flourishing and eternal joy. This therap Read more:Gospel
