Ah, yes…the first family portrait, circa 2002. Johnny was about 5 months old at the time and Rich and I retained a meager amount of youth. We have aged dramatically in the six years we’ve been married. My theory is that when you marry near the age of 40 you begin aging in dog years. Five for every one? Read more:Funny

This may give you a clue as to where I get my odd sense of humor. This is a 1961 photo of my parents. That’s Bill on the left and Annie on the right. They actually attended a costume party as the Jolly Green Giant and a can of creamed corn. They take their veggies very seriously.
Speaking of Green Giant, have any of you noticed a similarity between the Red Robin…yummmmm! theme song and the Jolly Green Giant jingle? No, Jules. It’s just you. Read more:Funny

Dear Toy Company 2007-08-22 23:10:09 Dear Big Impersonal Toy Corporation:
Greetings from a 45 year-old mother of one. I felt compelled to write to let you know how thoughtless you’ve been to the parents of the world. My grievance is not with your lead laden paint, nor dangerous small parts nor overpricing. While valid, those are for another letter and another day.
Today I write about your packaging. Packaging which includes 18 yards of plastic coated wire, an entire roll of Scotch tape, six rubber bands and ten screws. All to secure a $3.95 plastic dump truck in a cardboard box. Ten screws. Ten! There are fewer screws holding my formerly fractured ankle together!
Do you have any idea the dilemma your packaging creates for a mother who is already frazzled from a morning trip to the mechanic and her OBG, 12 straight days of 102º heat, a five year-old who turns grocery shopping into an Olympic event and the realization that she’s left the checkbook on the kitchen table? Add to this the promise of a new
Phone Fun With Mom-Salad Days 2007-08-22 05:33:24 It’s been awhile since I’ve shared any Phone Fun With Mom so I’m a bit overdue. Here’s a recent conversation regarding the value of lettuce:
Mom: Hi, Hon. How you doing?
Me: Oh, fine. Johnny and I are working on phonics.
Mom: He’s such a smart boy. He’s already reading so much, you know.
Me: Yes. He’s a sharp cookie.
Mom: Well, your dad and I went out to eat the other night.
Me: Oh?
(Note: My parents eat at three restaurants: Old Country Buffet, Waffle House and McDonald’s)
Mom: We went to that Italian place.
Me: Oh…(This doesn’t sound good. She’s using Italian as an expletive.).
Mom: I ordered a salad.
Me: Well, that sounds nice.
Mom: You would not believe what they brought me.
Me: Uh…a salad?
Mom: It looked like a bowl of weeds!
Me: Well, it was probably different types of greens, like radicchio and…
Mom: Well, I sent it back.
Me: It was that bad?
Mom: I didn’t even try it. Read more:Salad
Anything Goes! 2007-08-27 12:01:41
Times have changed
And, the Church has willingly tripped and slipped
Since Reformers taught Sola Script
Assuring Christians are well equipped
But, today
There’s a merciless effort made
To petition
And then persuade
That Bible Study must be skipped!
In olden days a hint of error
Was looked on with shock and terror
But now God knows
Anything goes!
Good pastors too who once had taught the word
Now only teach what is preferred
They expose
Anything goes!
When Robert Schuller and his family team
Preach that the Gospel’s
Nothing but self-esteem
Anything goes!
The church has gone mad today
And good’s bad today
And black’s white today
And day’s night today
When some saints today
With no restraints today
Are hitting all time lows
And, though I’m not the greatest scholar
I know of the truth and holler
When you propose
Anything goes!
When barking, laughing and undressing
Are called the Toronto Blessing

Garagish 2007-08-26 21:22:53 It can be put off no longer. The week of the garage sale has arrived. My darling husband and I merged two independent, adult households over six years ago. This meant two of quite a few things, which have been stowed away in our over-crowded basement for these six plus years. But, sufficient nagging by Annie (see creamed corn) has forced us to deal with the obvious need for weeding out the knick-knacks and doo-dahs. Add to that an entire table full of long forgotten baby toys and a moving box overflowing with unloved stuffed animals. This weekend was devoted to sorting and sorting and lugging and moving and sorting. And, sorting. With most of the goods in order we plan to open for business on Thursday morning.
Now, I’m not a rookie when it comes to garage sales. I’ve spent plenty of time in hot and sweaty garages, raking in the quarters, amazed that folks will buy an old Miracle Whip jar but leave a silver platter behind. This, however, is my first gara
The Lord’s Day 2007-08-26 05:44:02
Psalm 119:71-77
It was good for me to be afflicted
so that I might learn your decrees.
The law from your mouth is more precious to me
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
Your hands made me and formed me;
give me understanding to learn your commands.
May those who fear you rejoice when they see me,
for I have put my hope in your word.
I know, O LORD, that your laws are righteous,
and in faithfulness you have afflicted me.
May your unfailing love be my comfort,
according to your promise to your servant.
Let your compassion come to me that I may live,
for your law is my delight.

I love to grill year ’round and one of my favorites is flank steak with fresh asparagus. This is incredibly easy and very flavorful. Wonderful with a big, tossed salad.
JULES’ FLANK STEAK
1 3-4 lb flank steak
1/4 cup Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 tbsp hot sauce (I prefer Frank’s Red Hot)
2 tsp house seasoning (equal parts kosher salt, black pepper & garlic powder)
1 tbsp honey
Mix last five ingredients together in ziplock bag and place flank steak in bag. Seal and let marinate for at least 30 minutes, preferably 1-2 hours.
Grill on hot grill 6 minutes per side.
Baste fresh asparagus with your favorite salad dressing and grill alongside flank steak. Yum! Read more:Jules

Throw-Away Culture 2007-08-24 13:39:27 I don’t normally interrupt my blogging rhythm (yes, I have a blogging rhythm) to discuss cultural topics. I have a Do Not Blog list of topics which I choose not to address at Everyday Mommy. Among these are pop culture, politics and 17th century Slovakian literature. Mainly because there are so many others who are so much more astute in these matters than me.
But, something in the shark feeding frenzy we call the media has been nagging at me. So, I’m just going to speak up and put this out there. I warn you, some of you might find this deeply offensive so I’m giving this post an R rating due to violent content.
Why is there such outrage regarding Atlanta Falcon’s quarterback Michael Vick’s criminal dogfighting activity? Are we truly shocked? How can we be? We’ve created a throw-away culture. From disposable diapers to babies in their mother’s womb, anything and everything is expendable for the sake of a god named “convenience&rd Read more:Throw

Works for Me Wednesday 2007-08-29 05:50:34 This is a goofy tip and probably something y’all already do, but it really does work for me so I’m sharin’.
Keeping up with the list of blogs in my feed reader can be a challenge, especially during busy times. I confess that I’m not able to read all my favorites everyday nor comment as much as I’d like. But, here’s a little trick that helps me keep up-to-date with my list.
Every other day I read from bottom to top. If I’m interrupted in the middle of my morning blog-reading (which I often am) I find that this allows me to visit everyone on my list 3 times each week. So, top to bottom one day and bottom to top the next.
Another feeble tip from Everyday Mommy. For better tips head over to WFMW headquarters. Read more:Works

But, A Filthy Rag… 2007-09-23 06:26:38 This is not a kind blog. This blog is but a filthy rag.
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags;” ~ Isaiah 64:6
“No one is good except God alone.” ~ Mark 10:18b
I have done nothing for the Lord that He did not:
1. Move my heart to do by the conviction of His Word and Spirit;
2. Enable and equip me to do by His power;
3. Require me to do in obedient faith, the very faith He gave to me in the first place.

Farewell Fenton 2007-09-21 17:41:38 I just caught word of something that left a big ol’ lump in my throat. I know this won’t mean much to many of you, but it left me the tiniest bit melancholy.
I began a modest collection of Fenton glass about 10 years ago. I have only a few cherished pieces, but I love them for their vintage beauty. Whenever we visit an antique store I naturally float toward the cabinets containing this colorful glassware. Cranberry opalescent hobnail is my favorite variety so I hunt around for these bumpy little treasures. Then I learned that the Fenton Glass Company, founded in 1905, will cease operation in 2007.
These beloved collectibles will probably remind you of something you saw in your grandmother’s china cabinet or on your great-aunt’s end table. Having some of them in our home harkens me back to a time when simple beauty was cherished. When craftsmanship really meant something. When “Made in America” said so much. When I pause to enjoy Read more:Farewell
Wrap-Up 2007-09-21 05:54:09 Today is busy-busy for the Everydays so I wanted to share a handful of reminders before the weekend is upon us.
If you’ve not done so already, please stop by Mudlark Tales and leave a love note for Kathy and little Liam. I’ve seen this blogging community do some amazing things and I know that you can carve 2 minutes out of your busy schedule to be a Barnabas…or a Barnabette.
Don’t forget that next Wednesday we begin the very first Everyday Mommy Read-Along. I’ve chosen a book entitled Our Covenant God by Kay Arthur. Understanding covenant will change your faith in so many ways, so I encourage you to grab a copy and read along.
While you’re reading, let me encourage you to put these blog posts on your must-read list:

Prayer for Little Man 2007-09-20 12:24:42 I’d like to ask all of you to stop by Mudlark Tales, the blog of my precious friend Kathy. Kathy’s son, Liam, was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. I’ve created a little button to encourage prayer for this darling little boy and for his entire family.
Kathy could really use some love and encouragement. Won’t you stop by her place and lift her up to the Lord?
Here is the code for the button, if you’d like to share it with your readers.

Everything You Never Wanted to Know 2007-09-19 22:17:13 I have shamelessly stolen this idea from any number of bloggers, all more brilliant than your Everyday hostess. Also not original to me is a schedule which will be holding my brain captive till October 6th. I’ll be attending a 4-day bible study leadership training class which requires a copious amount of preparatory homework, thus my inability to write anything remotely fresh, genuine or unique for your blog-reading pleasure. Oh! And, we’re going camping three times in the next 30 days. Any idea how much work it is to prepare for a camping trip?
So, beginning September 24th it’s Ask the Momma Week at Everyday Mommy. Basically, this means you’ll be providing my material by asking the most annoying, intrusive, insipid and overly personal questions you can dream up. The only restrictions are:
1. Keep it clean
2. Keep it civil
I also invite you to open up and give me a big ol’ piece of your mind. As regular readers know I like posts which make us thi Read more:Everything
Teach the Children 2007-09-19 08:20:40 Did you know that you’re a homeschooler? If you have children you are. We begin teaching our children the day they’re born and every move we make, every word we speak is part of our lesson plan. Like it or not, we all homeschool our kids. The most impactful lessons are those without words. Remember that old saying, “Do as I say, not as I do?” It is all about what I do, my sins of commission and my sins of omission, as I navigate these sometimes choppy waters of parenting. My most powerful parenting moments are most often those done without a word.

Looth Tooth and Business Trips 2007-09-19 06:01:09 Everyday Daddy phoned me from his office a few weeks ago with some news none of us were thrilled to hear. A rare business trip was in the works and he’d be leaving for a three day trip to LA. My heart sank, Johnny’s heart sank and Daddy’s heart sank for the three of us are a very close little family. We truly do everything together. I know that some people even choose to vacation apart from their children, but that is something we could never do. Now the trip which has been looming on the horizon is clearly in view. Everyday Daddy leaves this morning.
The preparation alone is enough to make a woman weary, not to mention all the aggravation of air travel post 9/11. My heart and my admiration goes out to you moms who go it alone on a regular basis. Add to the mix a little boy who adores his daddy and a heart-wrenching, tear-filled goodbye. I’m sure Johnny will cry, too.
And, while Daddy is gone I’ve prayed that Johnny’s looth tooth, his v Read more:Tooth

“We are currently on a quest to find and award the best “Adultitis Antidotes,” blogs that exhibit a childlike spirit that helps counteract the effects of Adultitis by using honesty, curiosity, passion and playfulness to encourage its readers to delight in the little things, dream big, and stress less.
