Earnings Update:-
2007-07-10 07:59:00
Last 7 days earnings from Adsense - $163Hopefully, if this keeps up I'll be looking at a significant increase in monthly earnings for July. Having said that - everyone will probably go on holiday now - and there is not very much (internet) surfing done from sun drenched beaches!I think the increase is at least partly due to having added some new pages, new photos and a new 'navigation' bar down the left hand side of the page to persuade people to look at some other pages on my site rather than just the one page they were brought to by the search engines...

Photo Of The Day - Fireworks
2007-07-10 07:00:00
Taken from my Fireworks Page:-My Fireworks photos are a fairly good example of how not to take fireworks photos - I did not have my tripod with me and had to do it all freehand with the aid of an iron railing to steady the camera a bit.... To get good fireworks photos you really need a tripod and cable release or similar...

SEO for images (Search engine optimization for images)
2007-07-09 07:37:00
Use keywords in the file name of your image. e.g. if you have a photo of the Irish Coast, you would want to make sure you call the image irish-coast.jpg as opposed to DSCF0076.JPGUse Keywords in the filename of your web page. e.g. if you have a web page that has photos of the irish coast - you should call it irish-coast.htmlUse Keywords in the anchor text of any links to your web page. e.g. if you have a link to the above page from another page on your web site, use 'Irish Coast' in the achor text of your link (and if any other web sites link to that page on your web site, try to ensure that they do the same).Use keywords in your Title tag. e.g. something like 'Irish Coast Photos' Use keywords in your Heading tags e.g. something like 'Photos of the Ireland Coast'Use keywords in text on your web page e.g. say - 'photos on this page are of the Irish Coast which I took while I was on holiday etc etc..Use keywords in the ALT tag of your images e.g. ALT='Irish Coast Photo Near Belf

Adsense Placement On Your Photos Page
2007-07-07 09:23:00
If you have images on your web site - then you have a head start already - as it is widely accepted that people are more likely to click on an advert if there is an image near to it.I have found that you get more clicks on adverts if you mix them right in with your content rather than having them in separate blocks.I have also found that it is better to have large adverts (250x250, 300x250 and 336x280) rather than small ones. For an example, you can see how I have placed my adsense ads at my Moonlight page. This sort of ad placement seems to work fairly well for me. But I must stress that I have not carried out proper scientific testing to come to this conclusion (as yet), and the answer to finding the best ad placement for your site is always to test, and test, and test some more to see what works best.

Myspace
2007-07-05 07:07:00
One of the nice things about myspace used to be that you could make your images available for anyone to hotlink to along with anchor text linking back to your own web site in order to increase your page rank.See this Irish Myspace page for an example.Unfortunately - as of quite recently - Myspace have taken it upon themselves to hijack links back to other web sites! See http://justinhileman.info/blog/2007/06/msplinks-kills-myspace-link-seo-karma for more info..This is bad news for anyone hoping to increase the Search Engine ranking using this method. Although it seems that links back to images as opposed to web pages are left intact - so maybe there is still some mileage in this method. As an example see a Yahoo Backlink Search for myspace pages linking back to my web site - you will see that are quite a few pages included here that hotlink to one of my images as their background but do NOT link back to any web pages on my site. Now, I am not sure how much this counts for in the eyes o

Add Saturation To Your Photos.
2007-07-04 14:26:00
One of the quickest and easiest ways to make your 'slightly washed out' photo more vibrant and colourful is to increase the saturation. If you are using Paint Shop Pro - just press 'Shit'+'H' on the keyboard, and try a number up to about 25 in the saturation box. Here is an example (slightly exaggerated for effect):-Washed Out Photo:-Same Photo With A Bit More Saturation:-Of course, you can only get away with increasing the saturation to a certain extent before the picture starts to look rubbish...Irish Wallpaper / Photos / Desktop BackgroundsIrish Myspace Layouts / Backgrounds / CodesIreland screensavers

Expensive Camera Versus Cheap Camera
2007-07-04 08:08:00
I said in a previous post that in my opinion, spending a huge amount of money on camera equipment does not make a huge difference to the quality of the results. Here is a great post on the same subject by Ken Rockwell:-http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/150-vs-5000-dollar-camera.htm

Create A Screensaver Or Powerpoint Slideshow From Your Photos
2007-07-04 07:02:00
First, Download and install the excellent Open Office. It comes with 'Impress' which allows you to create Powerpoint presentations / slideshows / templates. It also allows you export your slideshow to Acrobat (.pdf) and to Flash (.swf) files.Second, Download and Install the excellent Irfanview. It allows you to create executable screensaver files that can be installed on a Windows PC.(As always, if you do find the programs useful - please make a donation).See my Screensaver s for examples of what I created...NB - all this can be quite a lot of work, and in my experience *probably* not worth doing as a way to monetize your photos - but as I said before I do not know everything, and maybe you will have more luck with this side of things than I have had!

Sometimes it is easy to get hung up on trying to get the perfect shot, so you end up not taking anything. I am often guilty of this. I gave up this morning on trying to get a good quality shot at a low ISO setting with perfect light, and just took a shot through a double glazed window at ISO 400... I am glad I did..Irish Wallpaper / Photo s / Desktop BackgroundsIrish Myspace Layouts / Backgrounds / CodesIreland screensavers

I Have A Basic Digital Camera. Do I Need To Upgrade?
2007-07-02 06:56:00
If you are making photos available for use on the web, then you do not need to spend a load of money on a really good camera. Here is a photo taken years ago with my 2 Megapixel Nikon Coolpix camera from my Sunsets/Sunrises page:-If you want to get fantastic print quality on sizes bigger than A4 then it could become a problem - but for web use I think it looks at least as good as most of the photos I have taken on the 9 Megapixel Fuji S9500 camera. In some circumstances, a compact digital camera can actually be as good as a top quality SLR camera.Firstly, unless you are very dedicated, you are more likely to actually have your compact camera with you all the time rather than an SLR with different lenses.Secondly, (for close up / macro photos) you can sometimes get a bit closer to the subject because of the smaller size of your lens.Thirdly, (for close up / macro photos) it allows you to more easily get a bigger 'depth of field' due to the small size of the sensor in the camera.Don't g

Cut down on image processing time.
2007-06-28 07:44:00
Most image processing programs have a 'batch' mode.Say for example, you had 100 images that you wanted to resize and save to different folder. You do not want to have to manually open and resize and re-save every single image. The same goes for if you want to re-save all images to a separate folder, but with a higher Jpeg compression specifically for myspace users (for bandwidth reduction purposes). If you use the GIMP or Photoshop - have a quick look in the 'help' or do a search in google to find out how to use this feature. If you use Paint Shop Pro, Proper Batch Processing was introduced in version 8 (I think). To batch process files in PSP - Go to 'File', 'Batch Process'. From this point it is fairly intuitive...NB - there are a number of 'scripts' (or macros) already provided - but you may want to record your own before doing any batch processes. To record your own scripts, make sure that the script toolbar is turned on ('View', 'Toolbars', 'Script') then use the 'st

Is it worth providing different (smaller) sized versions of my images to let people hot-link to?
2007-06-28 07:34:00
If bloggers hotlink to your images - the image on the blog is almost always displayed in a much smaller format than the original image.e.g. if I make an large (1024 x 768 pixels) image available to hotlink to, and someone links to it from their blog - it usually displayed as a 320x240 image (or similar size) on their blog. So, if an incredibly popular blog links to one of your images - you will incur significant bandwidth costs as your image is quite large, and is downloaded from your server every time someone views that blog. With this in mind - I decided to give bloggers the option to link to a smaller version of the same image (320x240,400x300,640x480,800x600).e.g. anyone can link tohttp://www.ni-photos.jmcwd.com/cow3.jpgorhttp://www.ni-photos.jmcwd.com/320x240/cow3.jpgorhttp://www.ni-photos.jmcwd.com/400x300/cow3.jpgorhttp://www.ni-photos.jmcwd.com/640x480/cow3.jpgorhttp://www.ni-photos.jmcwd.com/800x600/cow3.jpgIn my experience so far it has probably not been worth doing.. Photo Of The Day - Albert Clock Belfast

It is the twelfth of July today and here in Northern Ireland it is a public holiday while the Battle Of The Boyne in 1690 is celebrated by a large section of the community. But I would like to stay away from Northern Ireland Politics at all costs, so here is a completely unrelated photo of the Albert Clock taken from my Belfast Landscapes page (please note that I HAVE got the camera level - it is just that the clock tower is leaning...):-
