How to BELL THE CAT - A Consultant's Approach!@PaGaL GuY
2007-07-02 23:39:00
Arun "PsychoDementia" Jagannathan's article on how to take a consultant's approach at belling the CATWith about a month or so to go, the question that junta is asking at this point is not "Do I have it in me to crack CAT?" as much as "Do I have it in me to crack me in crack CAT in a month?"Now let us presume that you present your problem to a management consultant like say McKinsey, what would they come up with? Remember they would give you only strategic advice, no actual implementation level micromanagement. Here are a few pointers that could actually turn up in their analysis report:(1) Don't boil the oceanSimply put, don't try to do something unimaginably huge (boil the ocean) to bring results that are not proportionate (get salt). This ways you will just cause more anguish when you realize half way through that the latent point of boiling for the ocean is pretty huge. Another way to put it is: Work smart, not hard.Try to come up with a list of possible tasks for CAT and try fi

The Below Average Student's Guide to Cracking the CAT@PaGaL GuY
2007-07-02 23:37:00
Here’s a survivor’s guide to cracking the CAT. In this article, Neo2000 tells you all you need to know about scoring well in the Mock CAT's, the big CAT, and all that follows. Originally I was going to title this “The average student’s guide to cracking the CAT” .Then I realized I wasn’t average. This could hardly be called a guide. And I hadn't even cracked the CAT. So I modified the title. I was going to rip-off Five Point Someone’ s opening line and modify it to read “I am pretty sure lots of other people could write this better if only they’d get off their asses. They didn’t. I did. So sit up straight, press Ctrl+D and let’s move on.” Before we go any further, remember that I am going to be giving a lot of examples based on my experience. What worked (or didn’t work) for me may not(or may) work for you. The important thing is, you have to decide what to do and be flexible about it. Lately, with the number of students appearing for CAT going up,

Things You Should Not Do At An Interview@PaGaLGuY.com Career Counsellor
2007-07-02 23:35:00
There is enough literature on what you should do at an interview. But here’s a list of things that you would definitely not want to do at an interview, unless you don’t want that job or that B-school admit that you have so wanted. Never Go UnpreparedYes sir, I hear you. You know it all. You even counted the number of steps on that staircase to the interview room. But you know that funny thing called odds. It’s always a damp squib. You might want to do a bit of preparation. If you have stated, Accountancy as your best subject on your CV, you’d better be darned good at it. Learn every rule in every accounting principle, by rote. And while you’re at it, it probably ain’t a bad idea to memorize the number of pages in the Accounting Standards Book. Some interviewers ask for weakness. What a silly thing to ask, like your weakness would be of any help anyway. But you can’t argue with their logic. So turn around any weakness on its head and make it your strength. If you’re a we

Read for Speed - Munira Lokhandwala Unleashed!@PaGaL GuY

Munira Madam is back with her bag of CAT smacking tricks and this time, she offers some solid gold on handling the nuisance that is the Reading Comprehension section. Read on to read like a God! Now it’s been three weeks since the article on how to start preparing for the CAT. Let’s see how many people have actually made a schedule for your daily CAT time. I don’t even need to wait for the results. I would be pleasantly surprised, if more than 10 pc of the people, who read the article, have actually gone ahead and made a schedule. Now you realize why preparing consistently is the most difficult part.A lot of students decide on the schedule but don’t have a fixed time for their CAT preparation. Result, if a friend asks them for a 6-9 movie in the evening they are always game. On the other hand some students will make it a part of their lifestyle so if they have allotted the 7-8 am and the 5-8 pm slot for the CAT then they are never available during that time. Before I move on to

100 percentile goddess Munira Lokhandwala throws light on your current CAT study status and suggests possible breakthrough clinchers.Almost all of us are now at a juncture in our preparation where we have to decide between studying and taking tests. But where one ends up depends a lot on where one started from. Hence let’s look at the possible stages where a student could find himself/herself. We can then look at when one should take comprehensive tests vis-à-vis studying concepts. Current Students could be divided into one of these three categories:1. Just started or recently started.2. Have started three months back or before and have prepared haphazardly3. Have started three months back or before and prepared with some scheduleNow the possible paths for each of these categories are:Just started or recently startedThe first thing that you should do is read the article Confessions of a serial almost- 100 percentiler. The Decision
2007-06-21 00:10:00
Live your life! I often observed students say the same answer when posed with the question: "Why did you choose this field?" The answer would either be "Nothing special" or "This is an evergreen field". But when posed with the question: "Are you interested in this field?" They have a sign of ambiguity in their face. When I faced a situation where I had to choose from two world class universities, one having the field of my choice and the other without one, I remember my brother telling me to choose the one in which my field of interest lies even if that University is considered a rank below the other. GRE is the same. After your graduation, you have so many options. You can pick up the management exam CAT or you could start preparing for GATE if you're keen into getting into IITs. Or if you just wanna settle down in life, you could appear for the campus selections. Deciding whether or not to take the GRE is a personal decision. There are many factors that are to be considered.

Foundation
2007-06-21 00:05:00
1 Foundation For any preparation, foundation is a must. Just like we do warm up exercises, even the brain needs such things. You need to brush up your basics before you can take on the real part. So lets see what all you need to do before holding that copy of Barron's in your hand. 1.1 VerbalPeople assume GRE Verbal is a very difficult thing. But nothing will be difficult if you have the proper foundation. It would be difficult when you do not have the proper vocabulary at your disposal. When you open the Barron's book, you'll find everything in Greek and Latin if you're not preoperly acquainted with the right stuff. Inorder to gain the "skill" you need to master three weapons. 1.1.1 Word Power Made Easy - Normal Lewis Whats the only permanent, fool-proof method of increasing your Vocab? The same method you used in early childhood! And, what was this method?Y

A final word before you take the test: Be there on time. No, make that before time! Bring a pen with you to the test center because you have to fill up a statement there and it is highly inconvenient to borrow.Don't forget your passport or proof of identification! Please check your pockets before going in. Don't take anything inside the examination hallUtilise the break given to you for calming yourself before the next section. So what is the situation inside the test room? (WARNING: The following is what I've observed)Once you go to the ETS testing center, you'll be seeing a number of people standing outside (assuming you've booked the morning slot. Don't let the sight of seeing people going through the last minute blues worry you. GRE is not like the other exams. Your last minute preparation matters the least. Make sure you're near the examination center atleast 15 minutes before the test time. After reaching the test cen

Things you should know before belling the GRE CAT!@En?gma
2007-06-20 23:28:00
Imagine a test where you can't skip questions, all answers are final and there's a penalty for not finishing on time--- this is exactly what you will experience in GRE's CAT! Pacing strategies are more critical and difficult on the GRE-CAT than for any test you have ever taken. To quote the makers of the GRE, "Time management is key." Your timing skills could make a world of difference to your final score. This is because the test has highly unusual pacing constraints. The things that you should keep in mind while you attempt the questions. DOUBLE PENALTY- for any unfinished questions at the end of each section when time expires. The penalty for unfinished questions is severe (worse than getting a question wrong). You should pace yourself to make sure that you finish all the questions in the allotted time. NO DOUBLE CHECKING- All answers are final. If you finish a section early, you cannot go back t
