Game Review: Stackopolis 2007-07-11 03:00:46 Stackopolis is a truly simple and addictive game of block manipulation.
You’re given a platform with numerous blocks stacked in a random order, and a picture of how the blocks are supposed to be stacked. You have 60 seconds to move the blocks into the correct position. How simple can you get?
Well, not so simple, after all.
You have to recognize the pattern and envision it on the platform.
To move blocks to some locations, you must be able to see the locations so that you can click it. Only, when a pile of blocks is blocking your line of sight, you have to move those out of the way first. So you first have to clear away obstructing piles of blocks, build the back rows, and then build the front rows.
And you have a seriously short time limit.
The controls couldn’t be easier: click a block to remove it from the screen, and click another location to place it.
Like so many games with dirt simple concepts, but challenging tasks, it’s a whole lot of fun.

A New Blog For A New Company 2007-07-08 02:00:38 Most company blogs are started by long-time employees when the company finally realizes that a blog is necessary for their business. They suddenly notice that their customers want immediate and up-to-date information about the company and need to make themselves known and heard in a direct manner.
Imvite is doing things a little differently, ahead of the wave, if you will.
First of all, this blog is starting relatively early, along with our fresh new interface.
Second of all, instead of the CEO telling the CTO to start a blog, Imvite looked outside the company in order to hire a professional blogger: me. Not only am I a new employee and Imvite’s new company blogger, I’m a new Imvite user.
That means that I’m going to experience the site and product the same way you did when you started. If I like what I see, I’ll share it. If I have problems, Imvite will know about it. If you have problems, please let me know. Between you and me, we’re not going to let I
Video Pick: Free Hugs Campaign 2007-07-12 05:55:48 The ability for online video and social networking to bring out the best, and worst, of humanity may be why it’s so fascinating.
For all the violations of privacy and humiliations inflicted upon hapless victims, there are the stories and snippets of inspiration that sneak their way into our media player.
One of my favorites is the Free Hug Campaign
, which hit the public consciousness with this video from the end of last year.
It’s not only a truly inspirational video that will get you thinking and smiling for the rest of the day. It’s a masterful use of video editing: black and white changing into color, little stories captured in their bare essence, and obstacles met, struggled with, and overcome.
Give it a looksee. It may inspire you, too.

IPTV vs Online Television 2007-07-12 03:16:08 What’s the difference between IPTV and online television?
According to Wikipedia’s entry on IPTV, IPTV is:
… single or multiple program transport streams which are sourced by the same network operator that owns or directly controls the “Final Mile” to the consumer’s premises.
while online television is:
… transport streams sent over IP networks (normally the Internet) from outside the network that connects to the users premises. An Internet TV provider has no control over the final delivery and so broadcasts on a “best effort” basis.
Which means, that IPTV companies directly control the delivery from their broadcast to your house, typically by placing a piece of hardware (set-top box) on top of your television, similar to a cable company. Along with guaranteeing a quality broadcast, they offer additional features, such as record, time-shift, replay, interactivity with the viewer, and so on.
Online television is simply sending out Read more:Television
Video Pick: Mika Brzezinski 2007-07-12 01:36:44 If you haven’t yet seen it, check out Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC diss mainstream news’ overblown coverage of the non-story about Paris Hilton. Told to cover Hilton as the lead news story three hours straight, she first refuses, then tries to burn the story, rips it up, and finally shreds it. On air.
Two million people have now seen the clip. In this followup video, Mika explains the lead up to her on air “snap”.

Important Information About Online Radio 2007-07-15 04:05:15 If you do not live in the U.S. you may, as of today, be blocked from listening to many of your favorite online radio stations.
The U.S. Copyright Royalty Board’s new licensing rates for online radio stations go into effect today. The new rates vastly increase the royalty fees collected for broadcasting online, as well as levying flat fees for every channel and every country served.
While the few larger radio broadcasters are not happy with this, the overwhelming number of small broadcasters, which barely make enough money to exist at this point, are essentially put out of business by this move.
These changes have a particularly chilling effect on broadcasting from inside the U.S. to overseas, as flat fees must now be charged for every country that can receive the broadcast.
Imvite is sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause you, even though it has nothing to do with us (we don’t do the broadcasting, or the blocking). We still feel your pain.

Top 10 Free English Language Online Television Stations 2007-07-19 09:51:22 Here’s my highly subjective list for the best in online streaming live television:
ABC News Now - ABC was one of the first major broadcasting companies to provide online live streaming television, and this has given them time to get it right.
Sky News, UK - BBC may have better coverage on terrestrial television, but their commitment to the internet is still limited to video clips; Sky News provides the answer for UK news.
ESPN - One of the world’s best sports channels is also available online.
MLB Baseball Channel 24/7 Live - It’s hard to believe that anyone can talk about baseball 24 hours a day, but these guys do a great job of it.
E-Music Live TV - There are a lot of good online music video channels, and this pick is a bit arbitrary, since it depends on your musical tastes. Still, E-Music provides a seamless and entertaining online experience.
Boston 22 TV - It’s nice to see a little player shine. Boston City TV provides a solid and interesting programmin Read more:English

Game Review: Space Invaders 2007-07-18 04:16:24 I can’t help being into Retro Gaming. All the fancy graphics and so on they add to modern games don’t make up when there’s a lack of game play. Don’t get me wrong: there are many great modern games. But modern games are not any better, or worse, than the classics games. Prettier, and bulkier. But not better.
SpaceInvaders
, which practically invented the arcade game industry is a case in point. Bare bones graphics, simple game play, and still as additive as it was back in 1980.
All you have to do is move your little ship back and forth on the screen, using the space bar to fire. The enemy ships march across the screen firing down at you at random, and trying to land on your planet. Once in a while, a higher valued ship crawls along the top of the screen. Nail it and gain some bonus points.
There’s really nothing left to say about Space Invaders
that hasn’t been said for almost thirty years. Discover (or re-discover) how little has really changed in w Read more:Game Review

Video Pick: More (Get Happy) 2007-07-23 03:27:17 More is an award winning short film by Mark Osborne. From his site:
The Academy-Award® nominated animated short-film tells the story of a lonely inventor, whose colorless existence is brightened only by dreams of the carefree bliss of his youth.
By day, he is trapped in a dehumanizing job in a joyless world. But by night, he tinkers away on a visionary invention, desperate to translate his inspiration into something meaningful.
When his invention is complete, it will change the way people see the world. But he will find that success comes at a high price, as it changes himself, as well.

Game Review: XBound 2007-07-22 03:26:07 X-bound is a neat take on the classic game of Breakout. Sure, you’ve seen souped up versions of Breakout, such as Arkanoid and DX-Ball, but those games merely add pretty pictures and a few special abilities.
Xbound puts you into the center of a sink, trying to stop the ball (or balls!) from falling down the drain while you work to eliminate the surrounding ring of bricks. The graphics are neat. The ball blurs as it sails around in mathematically appropriate parabolas and arcs. There are level-ups and falling fruit. What more could you want.

News: The Time is Right For Creating Casual Games 2007-07-26 01:33:50 Two pieces of interesting news for people considering designing casual games:
Google is exploring ways to add advertising to Flash games. This will undoubtedly bring in more clicks and more revenue than traditional Ad-sense on the same web page as the game.
Investors are looking for the next big casual game. World of Warcraft may now have nine million players, but that’s still pittance compared to the potential audience for the next Pacman or Space Invaders.

Game Review: Mah Jong Solitaire 2007-08-01 02:30:52 Mah Jong Solitaire
is erroneously known simply as Mah Jong. Mah Jong actually refers to a four player rummy like game using the same set of tiles.
In Mah Jong Solitaire you are presented with a stack of ornately decorated Chinese tiles laid out in a grid-like set up. There are four of each type of tile. Your job is to find matching pairs of exposed tiles that lie on the ends of the lines, eliminating them from the pile. Your job is done when all the tiles are removed.
It’s pretty straightforward solitaire, but do watch out for two things:
First of all, you often have a choice as to which two of three matching tiles to remove, and your choice may make the difference between winning or losing the game. Blindly removing tiles as they come to notice is a sure way to lose the game.
Second, although most tiles match identical pictures, some of the flower tiles match even though they don’t look exactly identical.

Video Pick: Dean Martin 2007-07-31 07:14:53 Dean Martin
was an American old-style singer who rose to fame through a partnership with comedian Jerry Lewis.
Martin played the straight-man in the partnership to Lewis’ slapstick comedy antics, and later on his sketch comedy television program The Dean Martin Show. Part of the fun came from the fact that Martin the straight-man could almost never keep a straight face.
Here he is with Foster Brooks in a great comedy skit The Airline Pilot:
Aside from his comedy skits, Martin had a string of hit songs, including the classic and lovely Memories are Made of This:
There’s something pure and innocent about old-time comedy and songs from the 1950’s. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
