Disagreements with the Mexican 2007-10-17 14:52:00 I always call my husband the Mexican
because everyone in town knows him as "that Mexican", and it's easy. When I'm mad at him, Mexican is the last thing I call him because over the years he's been dubbed less.Lastnight was just one of them times. Sometimes, I swear, I could just strangle him.I think it was in a post titled "What It's Like Being Married to a Mexican" where I explained how our household works. We both work, we both cook and clean, help the kids and it's tiring. I can't complain really because that's just life.We were getting ready to go to bed lastnight when I looked down at my toenails (I know this sounds sooo mundane) and I cringed at the sight of 'em. "Honey will you please paint my nails for me? I wondered why everyone has been looking at my feet. My feet look horrible and I just can't walk another day with 'em like this", I said.Nagging? Hmmm... maybe but my feet did look bad. I was tired!"Always thinking of yourself and your damn feet", the Mexican said ( Read more:Disagreements
Immigration Application Alert: Don't Be Scammed by D-I-Y Kits 2007-10-16 20:38:00 Do not be fooled by the do it yourself green card by marriage kits! I've noticed these types of things surfing around the internet and no one needs to pay for an immigration application/form, etc.Anyone who finds this blog on the quest to find immigration application information should first know that any and all of your immigration applications are 100% free. It only costs money if you send them back (apply) to immigration.Remember, it only costs money if you fill the forms out and send them back. All forms have a set of instructions. All of the forms/applications can be found at http://www.uscis.gov/ by clicking "forms and applications" at the top of the homepage. Many people are sucked into paying $50 or more for these stupid kits that are available for free either at a local immigration office or at the website (USCIS) above. Some people choose the services of a lawyer, some people choose to do it themselves and it is a personal choice. Immigration is not as simple as buying a kit, Read more:Alert

What Happens If My Husband Is Not Approved? 2007-10-15 15:05:00 Today at work I was chit-chatting with the co-workers about the immigration process, how far we've come and how far we have yet to go. One of them, understanding how difficult the process is, asked what will you do if your husband isn't approved?Ofcourse that makes my mind race because it brings back that unsettled taste I have for USCIS and Uncle Sam in general. I think my mind played out several scenarios in about 3.1 seconds to be exact.Scenario #1If my husband is not permitted to re-enter the United States, I'm going to marry Uncle Sam!Uncle Sam will put food on my table, give me money, pay for my medical care, pay for my children's medical care, pay my rent in subsidized housing, pay for my continuing education, and I'll hit him up for all I can get. I'm just gonna sit on my fat ass and become a welfare mom.Once I complete my required education to do the job I want in Mexico, I'll leave peacefully.Scenario #2I'll apply for all of those things I mentioned above but I'll pi Read more:Husband
Surfing the Blogosphere: New Blogs to Mention 2007-10-15 14:35:00 There are a lot of interesting people on the planet! I know because I've read and do read some pretty interesting blogs. I don't know exactly what it is that makes one person more interesting than the next, but some people do stand out from the crowd.Recently I discovered a link on another blog "Rivergirl" about an American woman living in Cancun and she's really cool. She blogs about a variety of things from finding strays to family and living in Cancun. I was surprised when I checked her site out the other day and she blogged a bit about me.This is what I found:"The newest addition to my list is La Gringa Mas Bella, which is written by an American woman who is married to a Mexican man. She’s witty and funny and tells it like it is. But she’s wrong about one thing, her tag-line says that she’s married to the BEST Mexican guy on the planet, but that’s me honey, not you!"Hmmm... LMAO, we'll see honey! ;)This girl is a trip aint she? (my country slang) If anyone is up for surf Read more:Blogs

Shopping for the In-laws! 2007-10-14 18:59:00 First let me start by saying that my in-laws are poor. I mean my husband is one of twelve children and his youngest sister is about eleven years old I think, so his parents are still raising lil ones.I'm trying to plan a trip to Mexico in May and both of the last two times I went to Mexico I brought lots of gifts; clothes!Clothing prices in Mexico are just outrageous. I'm not making fun of anyone but before I went to Mexico I would always see photos that showed people wearing some of the ugliest, mismatched outfits, that I've ever seen in my life. I always wondered if the people were just really poor, didn't care about fashion or did the stores not sell clothing that could be coordinated well? I just didn't know. The people of Mexico wear wierd clothes because they can't afford to buy anything better! Take a look below, this is an actual receipt: I've been shopping for a couple of months but I don't know where those receipts are now, here's one from earlier today when we went s Read more:Shopping
Cowboy del Amor: Playing this Month on Showtime 2007-10-14 14:39:00 I have DirectTV and I couldn't live life without my handy DVR (digital video recorder) because I can record up to 100 hours of t.v., pause/rewind live t.v. and much more, I love it. So the other day I was cruising the guide and saw "Cowboy
del Amor".The information said something about a white man finding Mexican wives for American men. Cool I thought and quickly pressed the "record" button. Lastnight I watched Cowboy del Amor and let me tell ya, this guy is a trip! All Photos Compliments of : Cowboy del Amor Photo GalleryCowboy del Amor (Ivan Thompson above) is an American man who, after leaving a nearly 17 year marriage to (what he calls) an American woman he couldn't please, decides to look south of the border to Mexico for a less demanding woman. He did not get exactly what he wanted!Ivan and Chayo (pictured above) were married two times. Join the Group! 2007-10-14 14:22:00 The only reason that I'm even on the internet this weekend is because I wanted to come and check out Laurel Scott's video contest, to see how it's coming along. I see that Laurel has extended the deadline and only a handful of people have actually signed up to be in the group.Okay, so I'm not much of a 'joiner' either but... I did sign up.I didn't sign up out of any loyalty to Laurel or anyone else, I signed up because this project is something I believe in. I don't expect the winning video to be broadcasted all over the world, on Good Morning America or even the local news but ya never know; it could be. (It would be nice)Yet, thousands of people (You Tube) users could see this important issue through the eyes of someone experienced, someone affected or someone who can easily get the point across. It's a start. So if you believe that Americans should be able to marry whoever they so choose, join the group and show some support for the cause. It only takes a couple of minutes a Read more:Group
Do You Know Your Life Expectancy? 2007-10-19 17:46:00 I think I'm in one of my 'feel bad for me' moods and I have to vent a lil bit. I can hear my mom's voice in the back of my head, "Do you think you have it worse than anyone else?"No but sometimes I think it's therapeutic to sympathize with myself! (giggle)Earlier I was browsing some blogs and I was reading a post over at RiverGirl's Blog and she had found this Life Expectancy Calculator.Hmmm... a life expectancy calculator I thought. It would be interesting to know how much longer I can expect to be on this earth, could possibly help me plan better and maybe the Mexican will be nicer to me if I tell him that my days are literally numbered. This thing says I can expect to live another 17,000 days!Don't ask me why but when I saw that number, and said it to myself, (I'm gonna live for 17, 000 days) the first thought that came to my mind is what on earth will I cook?Quite frankly I'm sick of hotdogs, salads, tacos, chicken and dumplings, potato soup, pork chops, mashed potatoes, wa
A Sad Good-bye 2007-10-26 14:54:00 Anyone who has been reading around here lately knows that I was really excited about the birth of my niece, Liliana, on Oct. 3rd. I've been able to spend little time with her because I didn't wanna over crowd mom, plus my work schedule has increased dramatically, and because I work with children; I tend to carry lots of germs.Tomorrow (Saturday) my husband's brother is packing up his family to live in florida and I'll being saying good-bye to my niece indefinitely. When a Mexican moves away, you may never see them again! So I've been in a really foul mood and it seems that the closer Saturday gets, the worse I've become. I'm hoping that I'll be able to fight back the tears because I don't want my in-laws to leave on a sad note, so I'm gonna try really hard to be pleasant.I plan on snapping some photos of baby Lily beginning her first major trip in life and I'll post 'em as soon as I can. Wish us luck!
Cinco Calabacitas/Five Little Pumpkins 2007-10-30 10:11:00 In my line of work, I'm always doing things like this with children and lastnight I had a meeting with some parents where I introduced this little poem/fingerplay that is really fun to do with preschool age children. The parents and the children really enjoyed the activity, so I thought I would pass it on. Tonight or tomorrow would be a perfect time to introduce little ones to Halloween using this!English Version:Five Little Pumpkins
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate. The first one said, "Oh My, It's getting late!"The second one said, "There are witches in the air."The third one said, "But we don't care."The fourth one said, "Let's run, let's run!"The fifth one said, "Isn't Halloween fun?!" Then wooooooo went the wind,And out went the lights. And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight! Spanish version: Cinco Calabacitas Cinco calabacitas sentadas en un porton.La primera dijo, "Se esta haciendo tarde."La segunda dijo, "Hay brujas en el aire."La tercera dijo, "No le hace.
Mexican Baby Food?? 2007-10-30 10:03:00 Courtesy: JibJabI hope Baby Lily is not eating this stuff! I do remember the baby aisle in Mexican
tiendas (stores) but my in-laws give their babies real food. I saw my sister-in-law scrape a manzana (apple) and a platino (banana) with a spoon to feed her baby. (Much better than picante!)
Immigration Forms: DS-3032 and Affadavit of Support 2007-10-30 09:35:00 This may not be big news to some people but it's big news to me. After the approval of our I-130 we're now receiving correspondence from the National Visa Center and we have a new case number!I opened up the mailbox yesterday to find a package with our DS3032 (Choice of Address and Agent form) and a $70 bill for the Affadavit of Support
. I filled out the DS3032 and will be returning that and the payment via registered mail soon.Once the National Visa Center recieves this information they should send me another packet filled with even more delightful forms to fill out and return, along with more fees to pay ofcourse.I don't like the consular process but I can't be too choosy, it literally is the only way. And I haven't even begun working on my waiver letter yet. I'm sure I have lots of hardships though. One, ever so apparent, hardship is the mental/emotional toll this process carries.Although I may try to hide it, it is the first thing I think of when I wake up, the last thing I th Read more:Forms
My Bad Dream About Baby Lily ... 2007-10-30 08:25:00 My newborn niece, Baby Lily, moved to florida with her parents over the weekend and I have gotten most of the crying out of my system but lastnight I had a horrific nightmare. (Keep in mind that I'm home sick today and could be hallucinating!lol)I dreamt that I was walking down a hallway in a house and I could hear Baby Lily crying. At the end of the hallway there was a closed door and I could tell that she was in there. I opened the door to a dark, musky room with a baby bed in the center. As I walked closer, her cries were louder but once I reached the baby bed, she wasn't there.I looked all around the room, could hear her cries but couldn't find her. Wierd.I have to relate this dream with a couple of others I've had involving children because as much as I'd like to dub my dream up to Baby Lily leaving and cold medicine, something could be wrong. When I Miscarried ...When I was seventeen years old, I went to the doctor and he said I was pregnant. I wasn't ready for a baby at sev Read more:Dream

Quick Tortilla Chips 2007-11-03 00:04:00 Ever had the munchies but didn't have any junk food in the house for a quick binge? It's happened to me a time or two but thank God I have a bag of tortillas in my fridge around the clock. It doesn't matter if you have a store bought bag of corn tortillas, flour tortillas or just a bag of Maseca; it all works.I have a medium size sauce pan (actually a pressure cooker that the top broke off of) that I use to cook my tortilla chips in. I usually fill it 1/4 to 1/2 of the way full of oil, never more than 1/2!Quarter the tortillas, just cut down the center and across just like the shape of a cross. You'll have lots of lil triangles. Just drop them down into the hot oil and fry until lighlty golden. (Not long)The Mexican prefers corn over the flour, but I tend to have specific moods I guess. Sometimes I want corn too and other days, it's flour that I crave. Most of the time I prefer flour.Don't forget to add some refried beans to complete this snack attack and if you want some punch, s Read more:Quick

Quick Refried Beans: Straight from the Can 2007-11-02 23:56:00 Ok I'll admit it, at one time I would cook up a pot of pinto beans. I would clean and soak my beans over night. Early the next morning I would wake up to give them one last clean over and on the stove they went to cook for hours and hours.I remember adding water, water, and more water ... all day looooong. That was then!Occassionally I still will put on a pot of soup beans but in a pinch, can pinto beans are life savers and this is why:Ingredients:A Can of Pinto Beans
A teaspoon of your favorite oilDepending on what 'm going to eat with my refried beans I either add minced onion or jalapeño or not. It just depends.I usually cook 2 cans for me and the Mexicans. I put one teaspoon of oil (vegetable I think) in the skillet, heat on medium high heat until hot, if I'm using minced onions or jalepeños I add them first and sautee them for a couple of minutes before adding my beans ... if not then I just add the beans. And the secret ... (Shhhh!) I take a fork and mash half of the beans up. Read more:Quick

Pico de Gallo: Yummy Salsa! 2007-11-02 23:36:00 The other day I was searching the internet high and low for a few good fast and easy recipes; I think I've cooked 'em all! Then it dawned on me ... some people don't know what I know and they don't know what they're missing either. So let me fill ya in if you don't know.Pico de Gallo is as Mexican to Mexicans as applie pie is to Americans. Does that make sense? Anyway it's really simple to make, it lasts for days and, most often, it gives food that extra little kick that will make ordinary meals seem extraordinary. Yep it's just that good. Here's a basic recipe:Ingredients:TomatoesOnionsAvocadosCilantroJalepeñosLemon or Lime (I prefer lemon)Salt to tasteIt's hard for me to explain exact measurements because I never cook with a measuring cook in hand or a cookbook in front of me; I just slap it all together. Personally I like a lot of tomatoes and avocado with a spicy kick, not hot as fire!I would most likely chop up 2 tomatoes, 1 onion, 2-3 avocados, 1 small bunch of cilantro Read more:Yummy
A Death in the Family 2007-11-05 20:45:00 Do forgive me if I seem to ramble but I don't think that I have my head screwed on right tonight. Today started out just as normal as any other but at the stroke of 2:30 p.m., things changed.I went to work this morning arriving about five minutes late as usual and the topic of morning conversation started about Oprah's announcement of troubles at her all girl school in Africa, the sudden increase of auto accidents on the daily route and the never ending list of things to do.Late lastnight a friend of mine called but I was in bed, I noticed the missed call on my cell this morning but I didn't call her back. At lunch time, she called again and I missed the call again. Finally, with only ten minutes left on my lunch break, I called her back and we got a chance to talk for a few minutes.I asked her if she had any news to tell to me, she said no and I ended the call with, "Well if ya hear any news, give me a call".And I went on with my day.I was on an appointment when my phone vibrated a Read more:Family
How to Make Homemade Salsa 2007-11-04 19:18:00 My friends call me ALL THE TIME, seriously, asking me how to prepare easy Mexican food. The other day when I was typing up the tortilla chip recipe and the pico de gallo one, I thought about how many times I've been asked about homemade salsa.I swear I was gonna type it up but I got sleepy! So now here it is.You can make this as hot or as mild as you want, it all depends on the chile ratio. Use lots of chiles, you get hot salsa … use a few, you get mild salsa; easy right!Ingredients:TomatoesJalapenosSalt to tasteRemember to wash your tomatoes and jalapenos first, then cut out the tops of each one. Begin by placing your jalapenos in a pot to boil them in with enough water in there to cover both; all the tomatoes and all the jalapenos. Just cook the jalapenos first until they are soft.Add your tomatoes and cook until they are soft.I never time myself but if I had to guess I would say cook the jalapenos for ten minutes, add the tomatoes and cook for five to ten more minutes. The tomat
Happy Halloween from US! 2007-11-04 18:28:00 Halloween actually started out pretty sad because I've been under the weather and actually called in sick to work on tuesday and wednesday (halloween day); I ended up trick or treating anyway because the kids begged me to go.I had about twenty minutes to get ready! I threw on black, painted my face, made this thing to go under my chin to look like hair growing for the horrid hairy witch I would be and stopped off at the local Family Dollar to purchase the last wig they had ... uh, a red one!And this was the end result below: Please don't be alarmed, no real ghosts or goblins were harmed for this photo! Burying Grandma the Hillbilly Way? (This is Loooong!) 2007-11-21 12:09:00 Times have been interesting lemme tell ya! Let me do a short recap here ...Monday, November 5, 2007- My Grandma

(I was nearly shot)So I figure that's a really good place to start. Just keep in mind that my Mom married a man with four kids that hate us and we hate them because they hate us; my stepdad is alright though. His kids are just horrible and they treat him horribly too. Anyway ...Thursday, November the 8th-On thursday I was at Mom's house sitting at the kitchen table ironing Caleb's shirt so that we could go to the funeral home. Internationally "Santa": Could Santa Be Mexican?? 2007-12-12 19:11:00 I'm always looking for odd things to have around the house for the holidays and the Mexican
always misses being in Mexico to celebrate Christmas with his Mom and Dad so I try to make Christmas a really happy time. This year I wanted to look for a Mexican Santa
... and I found several.Who would have ever thought that "Santa" is as international as James Bond maybe? Well he is and this lil tidbit below even suggests that the famous fella in red has possibly spent some time south of the border ... learning Spanish!(Courtesy of: Gallina Music)Okay, Santa looks white but if you notice the elves look a bit ethnic and the reindeer is still wearing shades. Looking a bit suspicious to me. Santa has a mighty big sombrero on his head and check out that blanket ... it's not red and white.Still need more proof?Deanna Brenner, an artist living in the foothills of California, even sculpted a doll she lovingly named Pepe ... a Mexican Santa.Okay so it is a fuzzy picture but you can see the full scale Read more:Internationally
2007-12-12 18:40:00 (Photo courtesy of ABCNews)Nope this is not Who Wants to be a Millionaire ... this is Who Wants to Marry a US Citizen, and if you haven't saw it yet that is because none of the networks have picked it up yet. This proposed dating show has gotten a good bit of press. It was even on my local news station's segment of 'Talkback' the other day! Is it possible to win American citizenship? I wish. I'd be in line with the rest of the poor smucks like me who seem to be playing a deadly game of roulette with USCIS; waiting for our chance to nab a green card. I don't know what the point or prize of this show truly would be but I'm guessing that a small production company is trying to gain publicity and this is the route they chose to get some airtime. I hope that whatever it is that they hope to produce is better than this idea ... I wouldn't watch it. (Unless it was really funny!) LOL
The Black Sheep Goes to Jail ... AGAIN. 2008-03-09 18:47:00 Friday was a seemingly nice day. I went to work, as usual, and had a peaceful day. Then my friend called and asked if I could pick up her grandson from school. Okay that's fine until I get to the school and can't find him. So I call her and tell I don't know where he is.I ended up going back to the school, found him, and took him home. And I thought that would be the drama of the week. I must have forgot about the weekend!I didn't feel so good friday afternoon. I ended up taking some pain meds and hitting the hay around 9 o'clock that night. My pain drifted away as I went to sleep but that ended at 3 a.m.There I was snoozing away when my phone goes off. The Colleton County DHEC Employee of the Month 2008-03-09 18:10:00 As everyone knows most health departments offer much needed services, free or low cost, to the community. Most health departments are a valuable resource and provide quality care to those in need. Most of them do.I thought that one of our local health departments was just that until the other day.Speaking Spanish isn't all that because there are some weeks when my cell phone rings constantly. People in the community that don't speak English need help with things like scheduling appointments at the health department and Tuesday was one of those times.A Mexican woman called on Tuesday at a really bad time at work. She asked me to call the health department and cancel her afternoon appointment and to possibly reschedule it for Thursday. I didn't get a chance to do that.Wednesday morning I cal Read more:County

I Need Totter Please 2008-03-01 13:41:00 My hubby, the Mexican, and I sat around the other day giggling about the blog post I wrote about the control remote. It doesn't bother him that I talk about it but it does bother him that people he doesn't know ... know about his little speech problem. He's afraid that someone will walk up to him one day and say, "Oh yeah you're the guy married to La Gringa Mas Bella. It's not like that many people read my stuff.) lolOn with the story ...The other night we were famished and it was about 8 o'clock so we decided to hit the drive thru at Captain D's (which the Mexican calls Capitan D's) when we both cracked up over the speech thing again. We pull up Read more:Please
Venting: The Surprises Are Killing Me ... 2008-02-25 18:17:00 A few months ago I blogged about my sister-in-law (Title: Catching Up) and how she collided head on with a car on I-95, intoxicated, traveling North in the South bound lane, ultimately taking the life of an innocent man from Florida. What a big surprise that was.It never fails ... it's time for another surprise, drum roll please (just imagine it!). This is about one of my husband's other brothers and his new girlfriend.(BACKGROUND)Probably near the end of October we found out that my hubby's youngest brother had a girlfriend, her name is Amanda. This was big news because we'd never known him to have a girlfriend before. He asked if I had any tips for him since speed dating and bars, etc. just don't seem to work. Good Luck in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico! 2008-02-22 20:40:00 The Nava's are going to Mexico
soon and I can hardly wait to see what happens because this has been a long road to travel, not to mention ... the stakes are sooo high. I met this blushing young bride when she was a mere 14 years old and have been a family friend for a long time.I really hope that their appointment goes well because this family deserves some good news. When I met this girl, she was a teenie-bopper with big dreams. She studied extremely hard in school and it payed off. When other students were anticipating Christmas break she was preparing to relax at home and think about her future. She graduated about six months early but returned that May to walk across the stage and accept her diploma with her peers. She decided to put college on hold for awhile and it was a good thing aft Read more:Good Luck
