UNDER WOOL DRESS: Removable lining? Slip with sleeves? posted by jadamo00
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I'm looking toward making light wool shirtdresses for fall. I know I can't wear the wool against my skin or I'll itch like crazy. Instead of lining the dress: anyone ever wear a removable liner under a wool dress? I'm thinking of something like a long sleeves slip, probably in light cotton. What does anyone think? Anyone have a pattern suggestion? Thanks! Hi all. I have been lurking here absorbing all of the great info - we had a confirmation in May and a graduation in June, so am just getting back into the sewing room! During the recent 99 cent sales at Hancock, I picked up B5053 and B5047. I used some $1 yard WalMart fabric for the B5053 blouse and this is what I ended up with. For the record, I am 5' 10" tall and my measurements are: high bust 46 bust 49 1/2 waist 48 - definitely got the apple thing going! hip 52 I buy 2x tops and 22 long pants at CJ Banks - the one rtw store where I like the fit, except I find that the bust is always too big if the garment fits around my hips and tummy. I am more of a B cup than a C in patterns, does anyone know what cup size these patterns are drafted for? This top was cut out using the size 22 lines - the only mod was to use the 3x line at the back armseye - as I have broad shoulders. I like the fit of the shoulders and the top to the sleeve cap - but the rest of it! It hangs like a sac

Hey guys, I?ve been thinking about getting a mat and rotary, mostly bc I do all my work on the floor of my tiny house and my pins and scissors get stuck on the carpet. I?m eyeing the following items: ( I get a discount here so the mat would be only $70) http://www.hsn.com/cnt/prod/default.aspx?webp_id=2349079&web_id=2349079&sz=0&sf=ct&dept=ct0052&cat=ct0056&subcat=&gs=&attr=&prev=hp!sf!dept!cat&ocm= http://www.hsn.com/cnt/prod/default.aspx?webp_id=2349191&web_id=2349191&sz=0&sf=ct&dept=ct0052&cat=ct0056&subcat=&gs=&attr=&prev=hp!sf!dept!cat&ocm= A friend of mine mentioned that its very hard to cut over curves, is that true? Perhaps this has been posted previously, but I was at Britex today and a sales lady there told me Satin Moon is closing at the end of August. Then I went to Stonemountain & Daughter and they told me Poppy Fabric s is closing. I went over to Poppy and they are having a 25% sale to clear the fabric out. : ( -- Edited on 7/7/07 11:01 PM --Last post by Michelle in Oaktown at Sun 08 Jul 2007 09:26:04 AM Total posts: 7 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Research Sewing Machines at PatternReview.com.

more pants fitting advice posted by mssewcrazy
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The more I read the more confused I am. On the simplicity.com pattern site there is a link to advice on fitting pants. It says basically to determine crotch depth and then make adjustments to crotch length by making changes to the inseam points adding more or taking away if necessary to one or the other. I have had fitting advice that says never touch those points. Who in the world really knows what to do to fit a pair of pants ? Another website was claiming that most of the fitting issues in pants are because bodies are uneven on the left and right side and back to front so all the measuring of circumference and dividing in half or fourths is useless. Another shows a method of measuring crotch width. I thought I had a grip on how to start to fit a pair of pants and now I think I need to start all over with muslin 101 class. Oh well, I guess I will just dig out a pattern and start tracing again and move the crotch points in weird directions and see what happen

I came across an oldy but goody this Sat.- A Singer 500a. It works, has most of the acc. and a sewing desk in fair shape. The machine itself was DIRTY in and out. I cleasned and lubed it as best as I could but wanted to know how to get all the grime out of the cams and gears. It seams to make so much noise when sewing. It does sew a beautiful stitch, and I love the slant needle. Is this a machine Jenny that I can take apart and put back together myself?Last post by got2bjennyg at Sun 08 Jul 2007 09:16:59 AM Total posts: 3 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Research Bernina Sewing Machines at PatternReview.com.

Choosing a Flattering Sleeve Length? posted by Vivienne
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I have finally clued in clothing proportions can really affect the way your body appears. I've grasped the concept that princess lines, and any vertical seam lines, really elongate a stubby little body like mine. But I'm stuck on sleeves. I'm 5'3" and I think I'd be a rectangle with a slight waist indent if I wasn't carrying around 30lbs of comfort eating (well deserved let me tell you). I think this puts me in the apple category. So how do I choose a sleeve length for a summer dress? I think if I do 3/4 I will have a horizontal line right at my waist. If I do a short sleeve, the horizontal line is right at my bust. Am I stuck with long sleeves even in the summer unless I want to look like a lady Hobbit?Last post by Mini at Sun 08 Jul 2007 09:15:15 AM Total posts: 11 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Research Kenmore Sewing Machines and Sergers at PatternReview.com.

Is it best to trace or cut out patterns? posted by MareeAlison
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I used to always cut out patterns in the past. However when I started sewing again about 2 years ago it sort of came to my notice, perhaps from PR, but from other sources as well, that a lot of people trace their patterns. I suppose with something like Burda WOF that's necessary but for normal purchased patterns???? Anyway, since then, I've traced them too onto various types of paper or interfacing. Currently I've settled on the lightest weight and cheapest interfacing as my favourite. It seems there are lots of benefits for me, particuarly as I'm known to change size up and down from year to year so I can always go back and get a better fit. Tracing Kwik Sew and Jalie are okay because of the fantastic paper but some of the others is fairly tedious. But what do you all do? :) Is there a rule. :biggrin:Last post by Deb Fox at Sun 08 Jul 2007 09:08:15 AM Total posts: 19 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Shop for Kwik Sew at PatternReview.com

I am interested in purchasing the kwik sew swim and activewear book. For those of you who have it...does it have a pattern for a skirt type swimsuit? Does it have a pattern for a swim suit with a tankini top and a skirt bottom? Would I be better off just buying these patterns separately? Is the book fairly up to date, even though it has a copyright of 1995, I believe. I would purchase this book on Amazon and therefore cannot look inside to see what the patterns are. Thanks for your e-mails notifying me about not being able to get on to PatternReview today. Currently PatternReview resides on one dedicated server managed by our web hosting company. This solo server is no longer able to handle all the traffic the site gets, and because of this, it's become necessary to add another server to the site so that errors like todays don't occur again ( I was out of town and took care of it as soon as I got back home). I've just talked to my site manager at my web hosting company and I'll be adding a new server to the site on Monday. This means that there will be some downtime Monday night when we add in the new server and make configuration changes. I will post more details as they become available. What kind of machine does this? posted by maryl
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I'm making replacement cushions for some outdoor chairs. It's going well, except I can't figure out how to replicate the stitches across the back and seat that hold the batting in place. They essentially quilt the back and seat into a couple of sections. But the cushions are so thick that I can't begin to get them under any presser foot of any machine I have. I finally decided just to put in a couple of buttons, and I guess I could even hand-stitch the seam, except I have arthritis in my hands. But I'm wondering: what machine could handle this? Just curious . . . I figure if anyone knows, it will be someone here in patternreview, my favorite, favorite sewing site.Last post by maryl at Sun 08 Jul 2007 08:31:03 AM Total posts: 1 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Shop for Loes Hinse at PatternReview.com

I believe they are all within the same price range. I know the Babylock is better, but also more money. Any advice on these would be greatly appreciated! Cincinnati Sew, Quilt, Embroidery Expo Today posted by PixieCat

I just got back from the Cincinnati Expo and had a wonderful time, even though there are definitely improvements to be made. I only took one class, Emma Seabrooke's Designer Tees. It required cutting and sewing a slinky t-shirt for her to fit. The room was so small and there were so many people that all were cutting on the floor, most outside the classroom in the hallway. I didn't even cut since the slinky wasn't pre-washed but got a lot out of the class anyway. Shopping was fun. Vogue Fabrics was there (ouch!) as was the Thread Guy and several other sewing vendors I didn't see last year. I think the venue is growing out of it's current location and I am concerned that there weren't as many sewing shoppers as at the Cleveland festival. Mostly quilting. Hope this show survives. Anyway, I just had to mention that CG wore jeans because I really didn't think she owned any. They were paired with a 100% silk, lime green shell and a turquoise, silk, knee length, im

Free Pattern for "Spiral" skirt? posted by beanssews

There used to be free patterns for making skirt s with the curved or J shaped gores on the net and in magazines. Are there any out there? I googled "spiral" skirts and got all sorts of interesting links, but not anything that was helpful. Adding to say: an adult size. I guess the basic drafting instructions wouldn't be all that different no matter what size.... I'm making a one-piece wetsuit style swimsuit like this. I didn't have a pattern so I've made my own using elements of a couple of Kwik Sew patterns but I don't have any kind of instructions about putting in the zipper . Perfect fabric for summer pants posted by Sew*Confused*Jo
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I found the perfect pants pattern and made them from Tencel. I was going to review it, but I wore the pants for the first time today and they grew. I had tugged on the fabric lengthwise and crosswise; it had no stretch, but still they grew. I'm not talking about a little bagging in the seat. They seemed to get bigger all over. I'm back to the drawing board. I don't know what fabric to use. I want something that is first of all very cool. The heat index is 107 F right now. I would like it to be wrinkle resistant, machine washable, and not stretch out of shape. I guess I am thinking of the weight that I have purchased at Christine Jonsen's, but I couldn't find it on her website. The wedding dress is done! posted by KatieN
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Several months ago I took on the task of creating the wedding dress for my sister, who is getting married in November. She was so excited that I would make it for her, because she couldn't find anything in the bridal shops that was just what she wanted, and I was excited to get the opportunity. So, now, it is finally finished! And we still have 4 months to spare :) I got alot of great advice from this site along the way, and learned a lot about creating a boned bodice, inserting a hand-picked zipper, dealing with challenging fabric (silk charmeuse and silk chiffon), and enjoyed (almost) every minute of it! So, Here are my pictures to share. We just finished getting the bustle rigged up tonight (the ribbons are green in the picture, but we'll really use white ribbons for the wedding). Since there was no good way to disguise hooks for the two side bustle points, I decided to do thread loops at both the bodice and skirt parts of those two bustle points, and tie a narrow ribbon

dividing up darts posted by JuliaS

I've put together a muslin of the Amy Butler Cabo Halter and like the way it fits, except for the dart. The dart is fairly good-sized to start with and after my FBA, it is one big honkin' dart. It gives me a fairly pointy, Madonna-esque look. I think I'd like to divide it up into two darts. (maybe even three?) Is this as easy as I think it is? I understand how to rotate darts but can't find explicit directions on how to divide one up. I'm thinking of picking two new dart points on either side of the original one, then dividing up the width of the dart and centering it around the new dart points and drawing new dart legs. Does this sound right? And I'm trying to check out other patterns and find out if the new dart points should be at the same vertical level. Should one be higher than the other? Should it be the one closer to CF that is lower?Last post by ryan's mom at Thu 12 Jul 2007 08:31:22 AM Total posts: 2 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Get more

First Time Vinyl sewist needs help posted by jannw
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I ordered silver vinyl from FabricMart and had visions of a pearlized type silver gray jacket to wear with my black velvet jeans. I didn't realize that it would be so soft..I was thinking more along shower curtain stiffness, so I've revised my pattern choice and am going to go with Vogue 7998 lengthed into a 3/4 lenght coat. It has no buttons or set in sleeves and does have a sash. The layout is single thickness, cut on the fold and rotate the top layer. My question is this fabric has no grainlines that I can find, FabricMart said that the backing has a stretch, but when I pull it doesn't bounce back so can I ignore this layout and just cut as usual? This fabric does stick to itself. I'm planning on lining it and was going to use a black but am now thinking..what the heck go all the way ..I have some magenta lining fabric in my stash. Comments and suggestion are welcomed..I don't want to look like Star Wars or a bad Tinman costume! The material does look like aluminum foil.

Dropped shoulder. Can I alter to a fitted should? posted by mrs quickly

I have two tunic patterns that I want to sew up but after seeing the reviews here on PR I realized the shoulders are dropped. (Even though they don't appear to be on the pattern envelope.) I have a broad back and shoulders so any top with dropped shoulders makes them appear even wider. What is the correct was to alter an existing pattern to raise the shoulder seam to the natural shoulder?
