Should I look a gift serger in the mouth? posted by Sophiecat 0000-00-00 00:00:00 I have been helping a friend clear out her mother's sewing room; her mom has Alzheimer's, and no longer really uses it, but still likes to go through her "stuff." I was offered the serger, but I'm not sure I want and/or need it. I don't have one, have never used one, and really can't think why I would need it. I dislike the look of a serged seam, and consider it a waste of thread. I sew primarily to have interesting, unusual clothing, and am not interested in speed sewing.
So, all you serger fans, can you change my mind?
The machine is a White, probably 20 years old or so, and I'm not sure of its condition.
Any comments gratefully received.

This Fabric/Pattern and that Job..... posted by Lady_Mame 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Hiya Fellow Sewists!
I need some good advice (lucky I'm in the right place, eh?) I've been working on a mini wardrobe in green and brown for a more causual office environment like what I thought I'd be working in. Brown trouser jeans from twill, with a variety of green-themed calico tops.
Er, I'm interviewing for a job that is looking more likely by the minute at an upscale car dealership that sells Jaguars and suchlike. They are Dress Conservative according to my information. I'm wondering, should I go ahead and make the tops (they are not revealing or anything like that) or do I need to overhaul my plan of attack completely? I ask only because I'm desperately short on clothes, and shopping trips have had me comming up very empty handed. Normally, I'd make do and wait until I had a better idea, but I'm really short on anything to wear, period.
If I need to overhaul, I could use some clues on where to take it. I can sew about one shirt every two days, or pants in three, tho Read more:Pattern

Sewing Stretch Jersey posted by soggy.moggy 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Hi all!
Please help! I'm trying to sew a top from a book (Making Stuff: An alternative craft book by Ziggy Heanor ISBN: 1094772617) using stetch jersey fabric.
I'm fine with everything the instructions up to where they say to use stretchy iron-on (fusible) interfacing on the edges of the garment before sewing it up using a straight stitch... Must I use interfacing? I can't get the stetchy type anywhere and wondered if i used a narrow zig-zag stitch instead whether that would be ok? Failing that I have normal non-stretchy iron-on interfacing...
Feel like just using zig-zag stitch and going for it... Please help - my local dressmaking shop was rude to me - don't think they like beginners much :(
Many thanks

Jalie 2449 Crossover Top posted by KeepMeInStitches 0000-00-00 00:00:00 I have this pattern and according to the size measurements my bust is a small (34") which is the size S and my waist is a medium (31") which is the size U since I don't think my waist will be getting any smaller . . .
should I just trace the pattern size for my bust? Will I be able to breath if I do that? I plan on making this out of some slinky.
Since I'm using slinky do I also have to use slinky for my "muslin"? If not, what other fabrics can I use for my trial run?

Adding a side seam to one-piece pants pattern posted by Fruzzle 0000-00-00 00:00:00 I made up a pair of the Simplicity 7513 pants. This is a very simple one-piece
pattern with a drawstring waist, but the crotch curve seems to be just right for me, so I figured it would be worth playing the pattern to gussy it up a little.
I'd like to add a side seam to put in some pockets, but I'm not sure where to do it. If I fold the single pattern piece in half matching the inseams, the legs are the same width in the back and the front, and I've a hunch that won't give me a side seam in the right place. I could also fold it in half matching the waist at CF & CB, but I'm pretty sure my "side" isn't halfway between those points, either.
Any ideas?Last post by Fruzzle at Thu 12 Jul 2007 09:20:46 AM Total posts: 8

Vintage Sewing Contest Rules posted by fiberfan 0000-00-00 00:00:00 The vintage sewing contest starts in 3 weeks. I am managing this contest. I haven't done any vintage sewing yet. I am looking foward to seeing the entries.
This is a new contest so there are no rules from a previous contest to start from. This means I really need input on what the rules should be.
Thanks!

ottobre sizing for skinny kid posted by Hally 0000-00-00 00:00:00 I've just subscribed to Ottobre magazine. They do sizes by height. My 6 yr old is on the small side; she is 117cms, which is a toddler size according to Ottobre. She is also much smaller around than their sizes, 3 cms in the chest, and 10cms at the hip.
Will toddler patterns be the right shape for a 6 yr old?
Is it better to use the size they give for her height, or for her circumference? I want to make her some pants, and 10 cms seems a lot to take in. But if I added length to the smaller size, I wouldn't know where to add it, just all in the legs?
I'm fairly new at this, and any help would be appreciated.Last post by Monica G at Sun 15 Jul 2007 07:57:27 PM Total posts: 6

My First Post - And It's a Question!!!! posted by Costume & Retro Kellie 0000-00-00 00:00:00 First, I'd like to introduce myself. I found this site a few days ago and have been pouring through all of the great threads and pattern reviews.
My introduction to sewing was through Girl Scout's sewing badge, then I had a semester of sewing in my HS Freshman year of Home Ec. Since then (and I'm 41 :wow: ) I didn't pick up sewing again until about five years ago, although I've always had my hands in some sort of craft. I also crochet.
In the last two years, I've picked up a bit of momentum and consider myself an advanced beginner. I've registered for a sewing class this September at my local college. I can't wait to learn properly what I assume are many skills I've never learned. I consider myself an advanced beginner.
My love is costumes and retro clothing. I just puchased my first to original vintage patterns on ebay. There are a few "regular" patterns in my stash but I'm drawn to the glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood and love Halloween.

Trying to re-create a Banana Republic shirt posted by Reggie's Mom 0000-00-00 00:00:00 I bought DH a camp style shirt about a dozen years ago that had a really interesting "map" print. It was a variety of pale colors like yellow, green, tan, blue--and sorta like a nautical chart in that it had red arrows indicating the trade winds. Beautiful lightweight silky cotton.....anyone seen something like this? Hope so! He's lost it----in his travels he thinks he left it in a hotel somewhere. Is heartbroken and wants it back.

What am i doing wrong? Hemming draperies, fabric doesn't stay lined up posted by loohoo44 0000-00-00 00:00:00 I just got a new Janome DC3050 and have been tackling all sorts of projects I couldn't finish with my old White from the 80's. However, when I tried to hem a drape (upholstry type fabric) the turned up part kept getting pulled with respect to the rest of the fabric, and I ended up with puckers every few inches or so. Do you think my foot was pressing down too hard on the top fabric? I can't adjust the foot pressure as I did with my old White, but I'm not even sure that's the problem. How do get a hem to feed evenly with really heavy fabric? I'm afraid I will end up having to use a walking foot for everything. Calling All UFO's posted by Lady_Mame 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Hi. I'm your friendly UFO contest moderator.
How would everyone like to do this? I'm open to whatever ideas you'd like to see and would like to have a great fun contest this year! There is a lot of great, thought-provoking commentary going on in the Vintage Sewing pre-contest conversation, and I thought even though PR has done this before, maybe some change would be good with this too. I personally like the idea of getting away from the item's sewn target and move towards creative/technique targets.

What do I do with THIS Crotch Curve??? posted by Heidi Cooper 0000-00-00 00:00:00 OK, so here is my sad story :(
I have not made pants in YEARS! Why? Because I live in skirts or RTW jeans and I have been having a hard enough time getting a T-shirt to fit! (I am fit obsessed  )
But here is my dillema: I made a June Colburn Kimono type garment and entered it in the Simplicity/ASG Creativity Contest. Much to my surprise I actually won! :wow: :wow:   :wow:
But now I am supposed to WEAR it to the conference on Saturday and I have NOTHING to wear under it. Did I mention that it is very sheer and the front panels are attached with beads leaving gaping HOLES down the front! I MUST wear something under it, believe me NOBODY wants to see that! hahahaha
A skirt just won't do, so I start reading everything I can on the boards about fitting pants...and it just scares me more
I read about this tip: Find your crotch curve And I think "Great, just what I need to help me decide on a pattern!"

Jersey Knit ends curling? posted by tigrema 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Arrrrgh! Okay, so I got new cutting tools (rotary cutter and mat, decent scissors). Hurray! I bought a fabric that is probably not appropriate for my first attempt at a pattern. (Kwik Sew 3265), a jersey knit. I initially bought some other, less stretchy fabric, but it was too sheer, and I could not even sew it without having it tear. Blah.
So, I washed the new knit, dried it in dryer, and set it out to cut. Okay, pressed it a little to get out wrinkles. BUT why do the ends curl???? And why can't I get it to flatten out? Why? Why? Whyyyyyyyy? I tried using a dry iron, then using steam. NOTHING gets the ends flat. It's driving me crazy.
And, on another knit note, how does one find a "25% stretch" fabric? That's what the pattern calls for. Could I find such a thing? Not really. Nothing in a decent weight, anyway. And definitely nothing in a nice color/print. Sigh.
So, I'm trying the jersey. I figure it will be a challenge, but also helpful, as almost all my clothing is som Read more:Jersey

Alter a Patter posted by onlyinjapan 0000-00-00 00:00:00 So this weekend I made Simplicity 3686, which are TOTALLY cute....but ran into a small problem...They cannot contain all of my womanly goodness. (ie. they are too small). I made the biggest size they offered and could hardly get them over my hips ^^;;;
SO! How would I go about making them bigger? I thought what I would do is find how many inches I need to add, divide by four (since their are four parts to make the pants), cut the pattern down the middle, extend, and viola! Cute cute pants that fit!
Is that correct tho? I've never had to alter a pattern before! Thanks for the help =]
