News and links– Battles, Antony, DFA
2007-07-06 12:27:08
Tyondai Braxton: “I literally was peeing when you called.” Boredoms’ 77 drummers for their show tomorrow includes dudes from Lightning Bolt, Gang Gang Dance, White Magic, Unwound, Excepter, Aa, Enon, etc. Are you a loser if you’re a drummer and you weren’t invited? Antony of Antony and the Johnsons is a choreographer. Death From Above on iTunes for under eight bucks an album, and a lot less than their shows.

DFA’s Prinzhorn Dance School video just needs some padded walls
2007-07-03 08:54:17
Not sure why James Murphy and co. signed Prinzhorn Dance School . They seem like a weird addition to the label. I think their minimalist bass ‘n’ drums (but not drum ‘n’ bass!) sound have more in common with the feeling and era that the DFA Records label goes for, rather than with their labelmates themselves. If that makes sense. (more…)

New Of Montreal video: “Suffer For Fashion”
2007-06-29 13:05:03
“Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse“: — the best video ever made? This is really possible. That video cemented Kevin Barnes and co.’s new aesthetic: fantasy-laden costumes, animal transformations, transsexuality, etc. It’s a hard one to live up to (unless you go for straight up imitation, like the band did with their performance on Conan O’Brien). Of Montreal doesn’t really come close to matching that video here. In “Suffer For Fashion ” they use a sort of stop motion animation technique to show pairs of gloved hands making various objects. It’s really as simple and boring as it sounds. There are some short clips of some live performances, but little else to provide variety and interest. In fact, the live footage is shot from overhead, so even that footage is less interesting than it could have been. Rating: 1 out of 5 stars Also: there’s a Chili’s advertisement before the video start. Outback wouldn’t shel

Spice Girls are reuniting. Simian Mobile Disco’s new LP will get a proper U.S. release. The rhythm section from Metric , aka not Emily Haines, will release their debut album this fall. M.I.A. will try to tour in the US this summer and fall, unless she’s refused a visa again. Iggy Pop approves of Elijah Wood playing him in an upcoming movie about the Stooges. Hot new Amy Winehouse remixes courtesy of Al Usher and New Young Pony Club.

New video roundup: Art Brut, Interpol, Blitzen Trapper, Kanye West
2007-06-28 15:19:28
Art Brut: “Direct Hit” I’ve liked the new Art Brut album so far. I can’t see how you couldn’t, if you liked the last one. Besides the addition of a little more texture and lead guitar, it’s very similar. It’s also more mature– not musically per se, but lead singer Eddie Argos’ lyrics and stories sound like he’s wearied on love and sex. The newness is gone, just like with listeners and Art Brut. Radar Brothers album news
2007-06-26 11:12:03
The Merge Blog reports that the Radar Brothers are close to completing a new album, as well as close to getting consumed by the Griffith Park fire in L.A. They emailed Merge this update: how goes it? staying cool in the warm south of summer? getting hot here too…we will be done mixing our new record next week, and it will be mastered july 9th. it’s been business as usual over here. no crazy cocaine or pcp stories to tell. just a few sloppy bourbon fueled performances that sounded good when we did them, but not so good the next day. It’s been a very long time since I’ve heard anything from these dudes, but they did release one of my favorite songs ever, so I’m looking forward to this. Patrick Daughters-directed Bright Eyes video: “Hot Knives”
2007-06-22 01:38:41
I don’t have good things to say about “Hot Knives ” the track, but I’ve never been a Bright Eyes fan. Patrick Daughters, on the other hand, has directed some of the best video s of the last year or so, including that excellent Feist video for “1 2 3 4.” He also directed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ video for “Maps,” one of the most delightfully maudlin videos of all time. I’m surprised at the subdued nature of this video though: an all-white set, some food coloring projections, and that’s about it. Disappointing. Tiny Vipers: “On This Side” new on Sub Pop
2007-06-21 21:35:38
Tiny Vipers is Jesy Fortino, a singer from Seattle. She will release her debut album, Hands Across The Void, on Sub Pop later this year. The first single “On This Side”, is a sparse track, just guitar and vocals. But her voice is rich and doesn’t really need embellishment. Her guitar strums roll amiably alongside a picked lead. It’s a sad song despite the pace, and her metaphors are quite good at showing this. “We’re just dishes in the dining room/ That no one is to touch,” goes one part. If only the song itself was as good. Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars [See post to listen to audio]Tiny Vipers: “On This Side” [MP3] Hands Across The Void Insound

Video roundup pt 1: Matt and Kim, Animal Collective, Hella
2007-07-10 09:54:42
Matt and Kim: “Yea Yeah (Flosstradamus remix)” There was really no reason for Flosstradamus to remix this song, because the original packs far more dancable, joyful punch anyway. The video, directed by Demonbabies, isn’t as good as the original either. The children’s show theme is perfect for Matt and Kim, yet the video annoys quickly, mostly due to the puppet host who interrogates the band. Still, Matt and Kim smile the entire time, just as they do at their shows and in their other videos. Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars (more…)

Justice and Spank Rock enter, one band leaves
2007-07-09 13:25:39
Vice flooded their website with a ton of Justice -related MP3s a couple weeks back, and they’ve decided to go at it again. I love Justice and Spank Rock , though I think Spank Rock’s normal production’s actually more creative and fun than Justice’s. I think the breaks could have better matched his flow (lol @ me talking about ‘flow’). Rating: 2 out of 5 stars The “D.A.N.C.E.” remix seems to work a lot better– especially the middle section, where the counting children’s rhyme becomes a rhythmic chant. Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars [See post to listen to audio] Justice vs. Spank Rock: “Thunderous Bumps” [MP3] [See post to listen to audio] Justice: “D.A.N.C.E. White Denim interview: “2/3rds of us have trucking in our blood”
2007-07-09 07:00:07
“We are going to start actually wearing white denim, shape our facial hair in interesting ways, and most importantly take vocal lessons.” I love when band’s press photos give away a little something about the band. Take White Denim ’s– the triple weight and the cigarettes say muscular, aggressive rock, but their pale, weak flesh says lithe post-punk. (more…)

Dirty Projectors to play the Whitney Museum (BTW, I have a short interview to post with Dave Longstreth, once I get off my ass). Basement Jaxx work with Yoko Ono on their next album. Escort: “All Through the Night” video
2007-07-23 10:29:59
“All Through The Night ” is Escort’s last single before they release their first full-length LP. While the track itself is great– just like all their other singles– they didn’t leave much of a video to remember them by while we wait for their album to come out. “All Through the Night” isn’t as sleek as “A Bright New Life”, but it’s still a precise bit of disco pop, which deserves something better than a bunch of Muppets clips strung together. In fact, with the song’s aggressive sexual come ons, I expected something closer to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vraT6drxPU Unfortunately, this Escort video just comes off as a well-made fan video. The trailer’s out for Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited. Not music related, but exciting. Joni Mitchell signs to Starbucks’ label, from playing coffee shops to playing in coffee shops. Such is the circle of life and death. Alicia Keys wants to work with the White Stripes. Maybe Jack White is reveal if those rumors that Keys has a ghost vocalist are true.

Le Club Des Chats interview: “We were both really in love with cats and wonky music.”
2007-07-25 12:45:16
Le Club Des Chats are a duo from France. They remind me of Holdypaws-era Deerhoof, for a couple of reasons. Like Deerhoof, the band’s got an obsession with cute animals (mainly cats, which wallpaper their colorful website), and like Deerhoof, Le Club Des Chats will dwell over a certain two or three chords and two or three words, repeating them until they force themselves into your brain. In “Dehu” they repeat the title word, which isn’t particularly melodic or beautiful, but gains a memorable, wacky energy the more you hear it. I bet they kill live. (more…)

New Devendra Banhart: “Tonada Yanomaninsta” and “Rosa”
2007-07-29 22:28:03
Devendra Banhart put up two new songs from his upcoming album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon on his Myspace page on Friday. There’s lots to like here. On “Tonada” the most striking thing is the crooning, warbling tone of his voice. The track also has a pleasing ebb and flow to it: tom drum pounding followed by wispy guitar and organ. Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars “Rosa”’s a totally different affair: slow-burning piano and beautifully layered harmonies in Portuguese. I don’t know what they’re saying—and knowing Banhart, it’s probably some insane shit. But in another language it sounds as if he’s cooing come ons. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (more…)

Missed video roundup: Rilo Kiley, Dizzee Rascal, Amerie, Spoon
2007-07-29 22:07:44
Rilo Kiley : “The Moneymaker” A video about porn, with no moneyshot, no nudity, and no melody either. Depending on who you ask, it either takes a lot, or very little, to make a video with porn stars look really unsexy. This does it. While I don’t think “The Moneymaker” is about pornography too, something about Jenny Lewis’s “ah, ah, ah”’s sounds forced and fake. New Björk video: “Innocence” (contest finalist)
2007-08-01 11:33:59
Björk posted two of the finalists in her make-my-video contest for “Innocence .” Both use computer animation, but the second (below) is a lot more detailed, if less colorful. This changes toward the end, when her world turns candy-colored, and a wisp of hot-pink smoke trails behind her. Video roundup: Black Lips, Kanye West, Liars
2007-07-31 09:34:03
Black Lips: “Katrina” I, like a lot of people, think of Black Lips as a live band, primarily. It’s a little jarring seeing the members isolated, and in front of a blank, one-color background. The video’s made up of all closeups, and despite some clues (guitar licking, etc), it doesn’t really show how they play together. Dirty Projectors interview: “It’s boring, though I guess quite profitable to do the same thing over and over again”
2007-08-03 11:16:55
Dirty Projectors‘ Dave Longstreth was cleaning out his parents’ house when he found the empty cassette case to Black Flag’s Damaged. With some time on his hands (I’m guessing, based on how little there is to do after your parents go to bed at 8 p.m.) and a spare four-track, he re-produced Damaged from memory. This re-imagining will be Dirty Projectors’ next LP, titled Rise Above. (more…)

What happened to Elastica?, And the Elastica/M.I.A. connection
2007-08-02 11:00:39
I’ve been meaning to do some posts on (relatively) older bands, so here’s the first one…. Posting the new M.I.A. video reminded me of something. M.I.A. received some help on her first album from Justine Frischmann, the lead singer and songwriter from Elastica. Elastica stood out from the rest of the Britpop pack, mostly because they were imitation (or, in some cases, straight ripping off) British post-punk when others bands wanted to be the Beatles or the Stones. Another word on M.I.A. and Justine Frischmann (and Diplo)
2007-08-06 22:21:35
On Thursday I posted up that thing about Elastica, which mentioned that M.I.A. and Justine Frischmann weren’t talking anymore supposedly because the former didn’t want to give Justine writing credits on Arular. I have no idea how much work Frischmann did on Arular. But I do think it’s interesting that M.I.A. was so insistent about Arular being all her work (and not Diplo’s) in her new interview with Pitchfork: Pitchfork: So tell me a bit about Kala. I just heard it for the first time today, and– M.I.A.: Diplo didn’t make it. Pitchfork: Uh, what? M.I.A.: He never made Arular, but you guys keep writing it. Pitchfork: ‘He’ being Diplo? M.I.A.: You’re not listening to me at all, are you? Pitchfork: I’m trying. It’s a little hard to hear you. M.I.A.: Forget what I said. [Pauses] What do you think I said? Pitchfork: I heard you say something to the effect of “he didn’t make Arular and he also didn’t
