The scene where John Strode's head pops actually looks very similar to Belloq's in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark had to be censored by superimposing flames over the image, which was created by using a shotgun to shoot a dummy head filled with bloody chunks.
