This is really going to suck!

You guys are going to make me want to buy a bunch of new music that I can't afford.

The Veils are rocking my world.
2007-07-06 13:16:00
In my efforts to see how popular we're getting here at Squidmonk Music I was doing a little searching around the Internet and came across for a review of The Veils. They were described as a darker Hold Steady - which got my attention. After giving them a listen, I decided they are my new favorite band (sorry Alabama 3). I've bought their songs off iTunes, I've downloaded some live stuff, and I've read a bunch or reviews - most of which agree with me that their album Nux Vomica is the best of 2007. In the reviews I've read they have been compared to The Hold Steady, Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley, The White Stripes, Echo and the Bunnymen, Frank Black, to name a few. Not too bad a list to be mentioned with. So seriously, check them out - you won't be disappointed. SIXEYES MP3 Blog has a ton of Veils mp3s here to listen to, just scroll down, with my favorite being Jesus for the Jugular - Nick Cave fans definitely should give it a listen.Other mp3s:Not Yet (Live) From KEXP's blog.Advice fo

Thursday Blues-day!
2007-07-05 13:34:00
I actually never saw this video or heard this song before today - Sonny Boy Williamson doing Your Funeral and My Trial. Nick Cave used this for the title of his album Your Funeral...My Trial. For another Nick Cave connection, here's an MP3 of Mississippi John Hurt doing an early version of "Stack O Lee" a song Cave covered and put his own spin on.

Just for the 4th of July! The Supersuckers!
2007-07-03 12:42:00
Since tomorrow is the 4th, I thought I'd go with some good old fashioned rock 'n' roll music by an all-American band like the Supersuckers. Not the cleanest video, but still worth it.Here's a mp3 of Rock-N-RollRecords for you listening enjoyment. If you want some more Supersuckers mp3s check out their site HERE.

Help is on the way...

Rumor has it the gang of miscreants known as the Hellfish are going to start adding their own thoughts, opinions, reviews, and whatnot to the Squidmonk Blog. It looks like Dr. Jones has already signed up and we'll see how many more we get. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Tom Waits
2007-06-29 17:04:00
I'm sure I'll be posting a lot of Tom Waits 's stuff around here since he's one of my favorite artists, so why not start now, eh? His stuff is definitely an acquired taste, but once acquired it is addictive as hell. I've always thought of him as the musical incarnation of Charles Bukowski and consider him to be part of trinity - the other two members being Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. His newest album Orphans is a 3-cd set containing all the songs that didn't fit on other albums. For someone looking to get into Waits, it isn't the place to start, for those of us who already are hooked - it is a goldmine! Anyway, I'm going to share a video of one of his more "accessible" and in my opinion "pretty" songs:For some free mp3s from the new album, you can get them from Epitaph's site here: Link.

Today it is The Black Keys!
2007-06-28 16:36:00
Unfortunately, I only recently found out about these guys. A 2-piece band, but you wouldn't know it by listening. Dirty, heavy, stripped down, rock 'n' blues. The song on the video is from their newest album Magic Potion Here is a mp3 of great bluesy jam that sounds great when turned up real loud. Grown So Ugly

Calexico used to rock my world.
2007-07-10 11:52:00
Until their newest album, Garden Ruin, came out. I can't fault them for going in a new direction, but I just didn't dig it. But I can't get enough of Calexico 's older, more spaghetti western meets jazz meets rock meets mariachis meets whatever else you can think of stuff. My personal favorite album is Feast of Wire it has a little bit of everything. Here's a video from the Hot Rail album:"Stray" Live at the Casbah MP3

Mick Harvey Monday.
2007-07-09 13:36:00
For those not familiar with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Mick Harvey may not be a familiar name, but anyone who knows Cave knows Mick Harvey has spent over 20 years as a Bad Seed, and as part of the Birthday Party before that. He has also worked with Crime and the City Solution and put out 4 solo albums of his own - the newest being Two of Diamonds. So here's a couple videos from him, I couldn't find any legit MP3s to share but you can buy some of his stuff from iTunes.PhotographAdd to My Profile | More Videos

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

First Saw these guys play "Shuffle Your Feet" on The Henry Rollins Show last year. Didn't know what to think at first, but now I am diggin' 'em. Not sure how one would really categorize them. Kind of bluesy but in a more gospel/Bayou way. WTF do I know. Now I'm just makin' shit up.First Album Howl is a bit more mellow. Here is a link to a live clip of "Devil's Waitin" off of Howl. This clip "Weapon of Choice" is off the new album Baby 81.

Country Meets ? - Slim Cessna's Auto Club
2007-07-12 17:26:00
I first came across Slim Cessna ’s Auto Club a few years ago while browsing a Nick Cave forum and read a post asking for suggestions of music similar to 16 Horsepower. I had seen 16 Horsepower open up for Nick Cave once and good old Iron Balls gave me one of their CDs and I dug it, so I figured I’d give Slim Cessna’s a try – good choice on my part! I haven’t had a lot of success convincing a ton of people of the greatness of this band, but it hasn’t stopped me from trying. They’re part gospel, part country, part goth, and part rock & roll, which all adds up to some very original and addictive music. I've yet to catch them live, and with a baby coming any day now probably won't be seeing them anytime soon, but their live album Jesus Let Me Down sounds like they're very tight live - the hallmark of a good band in my opinion. Give 'em a listen - you'll dig it!MP3s:CranstonThorny CrownThis is How We Do Things in the Country (Live)He Roger WilliamsAdd to My Profile | More

Punk Meets Country II
2007-07-11 23:33:00
I don't think many or any have heard of Speedbuggy, but I guess that is the point. Believe it or not my first exposure to them was through the now defunct David Borbon, a.k.a The Flake II. (Laguna being Flake I). That being said, these guys KICK ASS. At least their original carnation did when I saw them live back in the day at The Doll Hut. The original line up featured ex-NOFX guitarist Steve Kidwilder, bassist Brady Sloan, Pat Munzingo on drums, and Timbo on vocals and guitar. Greg "Elroy" Mc Mullen has replaced Steve, but I don't think they haven't skipped a beat. Check out All Tore Up, (got a little Jerry Lee goin' on), Grand Theft Omaha, and Movin On, from "Grand Theft Omaha", which as far as I know is out of print and unavailable.Yet to come...The knitters.

Punk meets country.
2007-07-11 12:44:00
It appears over the past few years that some of our favorite punk icons such as Mike Ness, Eddie Spaghetti, and Greg Graffin have embraced their country roots and released solo albums. Mike Ness has released two albums - Cheating at Solitaire and Under the Influences. Going country wasn't much of a stretch for him, and since he IS Social Distortion, I don't see why he just didn't do a Social D country album. He has been going in that direction since Prison Bound anyway. Here are some song clips from the two albums:Don't Think TwiceBall and ChainEddie Spaghetti from the Supersuckers has also released two solo albums, The Sauce and Old No. 2. His stuff is my favorite of the three and feels more natural. I Don't Wanna Know MP3Greg Graffin from Bad Religion was the one I wasn't expecting to do a roots record, but it's damn good. Cold as the Clay is darker than the other guys' stuff but not as hard either. Go to his page here and you can download two MP3s from the album.

Miles Davis Monday
2007-07-16 11:19:00
I am not a jazz expert. I can't tell you who played what instrument on what recording or argue the nuances of different jazz styles, but I do like jazz so I thought I'd start with two of the greats - Miles Davis and John Coltrane playing So What:One of my first jazz albums (like a lot of people) was Kind of Blue my Davis, and I liked it right from the start. If you are at all interested in jazz, this is the best place to start. One of my other early albums was Giant Steps by Coltrane. It took me longer to "get" this album, but now it is another one of my favorites. From there I just picked up something here and there based on recommendations and realized the world of jazz music is HUGE! I thought collecting Rocket from the Crypt singles was tough, jazz is damn near impossible unless you got money to burn. I've been on a big Cannonball Adderley kick lately and will probably have a post all about him soon - because you know you're cool if you can play with Kwai Chang Caine:

The Low and Sweet Orchestra
2007-07-19 12:55:00
This short lived, but great band, was a one of a kind mix of people and genres. You had Dermot and Kieran Mulroney (who were both in Career Opportunities the movie that introduced me to Jennifer Connelly and changed my life), James Fearnly from the Pogues, Mike Martt from Thelonius Monster, and Zander Schloss from Thelonius Monster and the Circle Jerks. I was lucky enough to see them once at The Coach House and once at The Foothill - a classy joint that picked up where Bogart's left off in Long Beach. Their music was a mix of celtic, rock, punk, country, and sea shanties, and their one album - Goodbye to All That - is long gone. You can probably get used copies on the net somewhere. Here are a couple of tracks off of it - Dirty Freddy Johnson - MP3Pencils and Shades - MP3The band didn't last long before breaking up. Since then Thelonious Monster has gotten back together, and some of the other guys started a new band called Cranky George.

It's Bob Log III Time!
2007-07-18 13:43:00
I don't know how I came across Bob Log III, and I'm not sure if it was a good thing I did, but he is just someone you gotta share with others. He's a one man band who wears a space helmet and sings through a telephone. Seriously. I am not making this up. His music is Mojo Nixon-esque, if Mojo was also doing Skid Roper's part while playing guitar, if that makes sense. With song titles like Clap Your Tits, Boob Scotch, and Wag Your Tail Like A Dog In Back Of A Truck, you can tell he's right up there with Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan as a lyricist (that was sarcasm for those who are a bit slow). But then - every song doesn't have to be serious. For those who are interested - here's his video for his song Boob Scotch, but be warned there are boobs - and scotch. For those who want to add some Bob Log to their iPod - here you go:Log Bomb MP3 For those who want to see the man live - he is going on tour!08/12/ 07 Phoenix, AZ08 /17/07 Monte Vista, Flagstaff AZ08/ 18/07 Plush Tucson AZTue

The Peacocks - Psychobilly from Zurich!

I came across these guys after reading a review that described them as a mix between the Reverend Horton Heat and Rocket from the Crypt. With a description like that, I had to give 'em a listen and bought It's Time For.... I was blown away. These guys just flat out rocked! According to their website, they have a new album coming out soon, so I'm keeping an eye out for that. In the meantime, here's the song that got me hooked to begin with:Warning - MP3
