Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 2007-07-07 13:07:00 First Saw these guys play "Shuffle Your Feet" on The Henry Rollins Show last year. Didn't know what to think at first, but now I am diggin' 'em. Not sure how one would really categorize them. Kind of bluesy but in a more gospel/Bayou way. WTF do I know. Now I'm just makin' shit up.First Album Howl is a bit more mellow. Here is a link to a live clip of "Devil's Waitin" off of Howl. This clip "Weapon of Choice" is off the new album Baby 81. Read more:Black

The Veils are rocking my world. 2007-07-06 13:16:00 In my efforts to see how popular we're getting here at Squidmonk Music I was doing a little searching around the Internet and came across for a review of The Veils. They were described as a darker Hold Steady - which got my attention. After giving them a listen, I decided they are my new favorite band (sorry Alabama 3). I've bought their songs off iTunes, I've downloaded some live stuff, and I've read a bunch or reviews - most of which agree with me that their album Nux Vomica is the best of 2007. In the reviews I've read they have been compared to The Hold Steady, Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley, The White Stripes, Echo and the Bunnymen, Frank Black, to name a few. Not too bad a list to be mentioned with. So seriously, check them out - you won't be disappointed. SIXEYES MP3 Blog has a ton of Veils mp3s here to listen to, just scroll down, with my favorite being Jesus for the Jugular - Nick Cave fans definitely should give it a listen.Other mp3s:Not Yet (Live) From KEXP's blog.Advice fo
Thursday Blues-day! 2007-07-05 13:34:00 I actually never saw this video or heard this song before today - Sonny Boy Williamson doing Your Funeral and My Trial. Nick Cave used this for the title of his album Your Funeral...My Trial. For another Nick Cave connection, here's an MP3 of Mississippi John Hurt doing an early version of "Stack O Lee" a song Cave covered and put his own spin on. Read more:Thursday

Just for the 4th of July! The Supersuckers! 2007-07-03 12:42:00 Since tomorrow is the 4th, I thought I'd go with some good old fashioned rock 'n' roll music by an all-American band like the Supersuckers. Not the cleanest video, but still worth it.Here's a mp3 of Rock-N-RollRecords for you listening enjoyment. If you want some more Supersuckers mp3s check out their site HERE.
Help is on the way... 2007-07-02 17:05:00 Rumor has it the gang of miscreants known as the Hellfish are going to start adding their own thoughts, opinions, reviews, and whatnot to the Squidmonk Blog. It looks like Dr. Jones has already signed up and we'll see how many more we get. Be afraid, be very afraid.
Tom Waits 2007-06-29 17:04:00 I'm sure I'll be posting a lot of Tom Waits
's stuff around here since he's one of my favorite artists, so why not start now, eh? His stuff is definitely an acquired taste, but once acquired it is addictive as hell. I've always thought of him as the musical incarnation of Charles Bukowski and consider him to be part of trinity - the other two members being Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. His newest album Orphans is a 3-cd set containing all the songs that didn't fit on other albums. For someone looking to get into Waits, it isn't the place to start, for those of us who already are hooked - it is a goldmine! Anyway, I'm going to share a video of one of his more "accessible" and in my opinion "pretty" songs:For some free mp3s from the new album, you can get them from Epitaph's site here: Link. Today it is The Black Keys! 2007-06-28 16:36:00 Unfortunately, I only recently found out about these guys. A 2-piece band, but you wouldn't know it by listening. Dirty, heavy, stripped down, rock 'n' blues. The song on the video is from their newest album Magic Potion Here is a mp3 of great bluesy jam that sounds great when turned up real loud. The Rugburns - Dick's Automotive! 2007-07-20 16:38:00 OK - this is one of the greatest songs by any band in the history of mankind! Dick's Automotive
- MP3In fact, you should just buy the CD - Mommy I'm Sorry. The Rugburns were by far one of the best live bands I've ever seen. The lineups changed over the years, but you always got a helluva show. I remember going every Monday to the Blue Cafe in Long Beach to see them play - each show was different and each one kicked ass. Some of their best stuff was made up on the spot and quickly forgotten and the drinks never seemed to stop coming. Good times!
Neko Case - Cure for the Mondays. 2007-07-23 12:35:00 When I first heard about Neko Case, all people would say is that she has an incredible voice - then I heard it myself. They were right. Her newest album, Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, continues where he other left off. My personal favorite though is Blacklisted. It is a bit darker, kind of a noir-ish Nick Cave/country sound with a woman singing instead. I've yet to see her live, but from all accounts her voice is even better in person than on tape, so someday I'll have to see for myself, in the meantime - give her a listen:Train from Kansas City - MP3Hold On, Hold On Read more:Mondays

I'm a dad! 2007-08-06 11:27:00 That's right, on July 25th Salty Pup was born and I am officially a proud poppa. So since I'm feeling a bit happy about things, I thought I'd post a happy song by Israel "Bruddah Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole:
Got $650,000 laying around? 2007-08-10 16:04:00 Then you might want to buy Sympathy for the Record Industry! This label put out some great music over the years - Rocket from the Crypt being my personal favorite. Not to mention some great Christmas albums! This is from Long Gone John's myspace page:FOR SALE Preeminent Independent Record LabelSympathy For The Record Industry$625,000.00 or $700,000.00 if i don't like youKnown for a multitude of things including releasing early efforts by Hole, The White Stripes, Turbonegro, Rocket from the Crypt and The 5,6,7,8's as well as resurrecting the classic music of immortals such as Roky Erickson, New York Dolls, Suicide, The Gun Club, Spacemen 3, The Scientists and Wanda Jackson and lets not forget the serious concentration on a plethora (like that word??) of bands in hot beds such as Memphis, Detroit and Montreal and also being among the first to look towards the Far East to unleash the demented and curious off-kilter sounds of those crazed ornamentals (Asians to you of a p.c. mindset)...S
Big John Bates 2007-08-09 12:05:00 Today's band was recommended by one of our foreign correspondents from the great province of Manitoba. Squidmonk Music is international! The band - Big John Bates
from Beautiful British Columbia. Basically, if you like The Reverend Horton Heat, Tiger Army, or any pyschobilly/rockabilly type bands, the I guarantee you will like these guys. Simple as that. They have a bit more surf and exotica to their songs, which I like because let's face it - rockabilly gets boring. It is like ska - the same beat and the same sound over and over. The good thing with these guys is they mix it up and do a good job of it. I only have one of their albums, Mystiki and it has been on regular rotation since arriving from the great white north. I'm definitely going to pick up his newer one Take Your Medicine ASAP. You can listen to some of their songs on their Myspace page here. You can also get some MP3s from their website:A cover of Tainted Love Aren't You Pretty (Organ Mix)

Legendary Shack Shakers 2007-08-13 16:38:00 Th' LegendaryShackShakers
are a band I've been meaning to check out for a long time. I wish I had sooner. These guys are nuts! Southern gothic blues punk and rockabilly goodness with a frontman who is about as close to possessed as I've seen in a while. Check out these two mp3s:IchabodNo Such ThingThey've got a new album coming out in September, be sure to check it out.

Misc. debris... 2007-08-16 11:58:00 The Veils are playing in LA tonight and tomorrow. Wish like hell I could check 'em out but with a 3 week old and the drive to LA it ain't going to happen. Tonight they are guest DJing after the show, so if you're in the Socal area - go see them!Just heard that The Pogues are playing in October. Isn't breaking news, I've just been out of the loop. $62.50 per ticket for Anaheim House of Blues, plus $10 service charge, plus venue charge, and my personal favorite - a $2.50 charge to print out the tickets on your own computer, using your own paper and your own ink. God I hate Ticketmaster. I also got this notice from Gallon Drunk's myspace page: NEW GALLON DRUNK LP, "THE ROTTEN MILE" TO BE RELEASED IN OCTOBER ON FRED (LABEL) RECORDS.UPCOMING NEW SINGLE "GRAND UNION CANAL" TO BE RELEASED IN 7" AND CD FORMAT, BOTH WITH DIFFERENT EXCLUSIVE TRACKS.TOUR AND RELEASE DATES TO FOLLOW.That should be sweet! Finally - Alabama 3 will release a new single on the 20th called Lockdown and will donate

Jay Munly 2007-08-22 12:45:00 If you want the textbook definition of American or Southern Gothic - it is Jay Munly. He is a part of the earlier mentioned Slim Cessna's Auto Club and the main figure in Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots. His songs range from dark and violent filled with religious imagery to somewhat funny with titles such as "Of Silas Fauntleroy's Willingness to Impress the Panel" to "Big Black Bull Comes Like A Caesar." One song I can't get enough of is Rufus Wainwright, I'm Coming After You - check out the MP3 - HEREAnother gem is Ragin' Cajun.
Juliette and the Licks 2007-08-20 11:59:00 I didn't know Juliette Lewis had a band. If I did, I probably wouldn't care or check them out. However, I heard this song before I knew who was singing it and I gotta say - I dug it! The video is typical Lewis - weird, off the wall, and over the top. But the song is very Janis Joplin rockin' stuff. Check out this video: Hot Kiss - Juliette and The LicksAdd to My Profile | More Videos
Top 5 reasons to watch Scrubs 2007-08-24 00:13:00 I get that this is a music blog and I'm recommending a TV show. But, this particular show uses music like no other on TV today or ever, as far as I know. The songs themselves are at times as important as the characters. They set the mood, provide comedic asides, give a sense of era and in almost every episode they wrap the multiple storylines together. If you haven't seen the show, I'd recommend you give it a shot. If anything, the music showcased may pique your aural pallete.Without further ado, the Top 5 reasons to watchScrubs
:1. The music featured runs the gamut and manages to stay out of the 'crap' genre. Artists that have had songs featured include Beck, The Barenaked Ladies, Marvin Gaye and the Finn Brothers. Others that have been showcased were James Brown, Toto, Joseph Arthur and Coldplay. For a complete listing of the songs on Scrubs, click here.2. No other TV show has or (unfortunately) ever will have The Polyphonic Spree as guests. There's not a whole lot of
My favorite punk album of all time. 2007-08-23 12:16:00 Bad Religion - Suffer I first bought this album on cassette at MainPlace mall in Santa Ana probably around 1989. I wore that tape out. Over the years I've gotten bored of a lot of the old punk stuff I used to listen to, I guess I'm not as angry as I was as a teenager. That being said, Bad Religion has been the one band I always go back to when I'm in need of a fix. I am not a full-on die hard fan though - the last album I bought by them was probably Recipe for Hate (on vinyl no less). However, I am not one of those music/punk elitists who call Bad Religion sell-outs and all that crap. Bad Religion is one of those bands who paid their dues, and then some, and who can write a damn good song with intelligent lyrics to boot. To top it off, they sound great live - something a majority of punk bands can't say. So anyway, here's a live MP3 of one of my favorite Bad Religion songs - Give You Nothing.
Not on my iPod 2007-08-29 23:05:00 It was recently reported that AC/DC has finally made available its entire catalogue for downloadings. Still no one cares. Could be that they signed an exclusive deal with Verizon instead of iTunes. Or, it could be that they are only selling entire albums at $12 each; no singles will be sold. Or, it's the fact that AC/DC should never have recorded even one album in the first place as they are a one trick pony kind of band and their schtick was tired after the first 10 seconds of the first track. I'm shocked this was reported as news and I'm only bringing AC/DC up in this blog to point out what hasn't been said in any of the articles. Some other rock acts that will never be in my collection:1. Van Halen Sure Eddie can play a great guitar but there's a problem when the line up changes are more interesting than the music. Not that there's much to the music except some guitar riffs under vocals from a no talent, tin eared singer.2. Judas Priest If it weren't for Read more:iPod
Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes. 2007-08-29 12:29:00 Amy Winehouse's father-in-law calls on fans to stop buying Winehouse's records to pressure the couple to quit drugs. So you get famous by singing a song called "Rehab" in which the main chorus is "They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no..." only to have people suggest boycotting your records until you quit drugs? Oh, the life of a rock star. Anyway, as an alternative to supporting Amy's drug habits I suggest instead checking out The Detroit Cobras. Here's what LA Weekly has to say about them:"No offense to Amy Winehouse, but it was the Cobras‚ Rachel Nagy who first reinvented the 60s soul-pop diva as a boozy, punk-informed, smart-mouthed chanteuse in the late 90s." Falling James LA WeeklySo enjoy all the fun and soul of Winehouse without the guilt. Here's a couple of MP3s for you to check out:I Wanna HollerAs Long as I Have You Read more:Irony
The Young Ones - better than Scrubs! 2007-08-27 15:21:00 Since Iron Balls brought up a TV show, I thought I'd do the same and go with the greatest TV show ever - The Young Ones. They had a ton of musical acts on the show, from Madness to the Damned, to Dexy's Midnight Runners - but I thought I'd share two of my favorites. Motorhead doing Ace of Spades. (This episode also has a young Hugh Laurie from House fame in a bit role.)And the classic "Dr. Marten Boots" by Radical Posture! And as an extra treat - here's Cliff Richards doing "The Young Ones": Read more:better
