Overrated And Underrated Safeties
2007-07-06 10:04:10
Usually when we see a list of underrated safeties, it usually involves the Jets with Kerry Rhodes. However, according to KC Joyner of ESPN.com, Jets strong safety Erik Coleman is on the overrated list. Here is what Joyner has to say on Coleman being overrated. Erik Coleman: Coleman tends to be mentioned in the same breath as Kerry Rhodes because he plays in the same secondary, but his 44.7 percent success percentage was the fifth worst among coverage safeties last year. …That’s a tough pill to swallow. I never thought I would see Coleman on a list of overrated safeties. He will be in a heated training camp and preseason battle with Jets third-round selection in 2006, Eric Smith. Coleman didn’t perform up to expectations and Smith might just be there to take the job from him come week 1…

Breaking Down The Coaches Of The AFC East
2007-07-05 09:46:53
Jordan of BlogCritics.org writes his thoughts and dissects the pros and cons for each head coach in the AFC East. Eric Mangini, The New York Jets Mangini, at 36 years old, is just getting started, but got off on the right foot last season when his team finished 10-6. His sophomore year will be one in which fans will get a better idea of the person known as “Mangenius.” Pros: Mangini is one of the hardest working people in the NFL. After starting out in the pros as a 23-year-old ball boy, he climbed the ranks and landed a job as a head coach. He was mentored by Bill Belichick and learned how to coach defense from him. Mangini was part of the Patriots’ coaching staff when their defense was unstoppable and full of Pro Bowl talent. As a head coach, Mangini is not afraid to be bold and surprising on the field and, off the field, he possesses a talent for drafting gifted players. Cons: Even with Mangini’s potential, the Jets might not be playoff material quite yet. Th

Jets Guard Will Start Training Camp On The Injury List
2007-07-04 00:52:37

Carter surrendered at the First Precinct Station House in Baldwin and was placed under arrest. This Month In Jets History: Namath Comes Out Of Retirement
2007-07-03 10:08:32
After the season the Jets won Super Bowl III during the month of January in 1969, the reigning Super Bowl MVP quarterback of the Jets, Joe Namath, decided to open a popular Upper East Side bar and named it Bachelors III. Namath planned to open branches in the state of Florida and in the city of Boston. However, the NFL Commissioner at the time, Pete Rozelle, ordered the Jets quarterback to divest himself of his interest in the bar. Namath’s reaction to this order led to a teary-eyed news conference announcing his retirement from the National Football League. With the NFL just getting started in those early years, ad revenue was important to help make the league what it is today. With Joe Namath being the reigning Super Bowl MVP announcing his retirement, the NFL offices panicked and thoughts of losing millions of dollars ensued. Namath’s presence on the field was needed in the NFL. A meeting between the Commissioner and Namath resulted in an agreement for Namath to sell h

Jets Sign Punter, Center
2007-07-02 20:16:21
The New York Jets have announced that they have signed undrafted free agent punter Jeremy Kapinos of Penn State and free agent center Charles Missant. Kapinos made the 2006 AP All-American Third Team. A four-year starter, Kapinos’ 41.8 career average is tied for second in PSU annals. A finalist for the 2006 Ray Guy Award, he is the school’s career leader in punts (247) and punt yardage, with 10,326 yards. Missant was originally signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in April of 2005 and has participated in Jets’ training camp in both 2005 and 2006. In 2006 he was allocated by the Jets to the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europa where he won a World Bowl championship. In 2007, he joined Frankfurt for a second season and helped the Galaxy to their second consecutive World Bowl appearance.

ESPN Still Sipping The Jets Kool-Aid | QB Rankings
2007-07-09 21:28:30
Scouts Inc has a team QB rankings list. Not just the starter, but the depth also. 12. New York Jets You have to admire Chad Pennington’s perseverance. He came back with a throwing shoulder that has been surgically repaired twice and still played all 16 games in 2006. He is a cerebral QB with superior leadership qualities. He has an excellent touch and is a master at reading defenses and making plays in the short passing game. However, his lack of arm strength can tend to hinder his effectiveness. Defenders jump his routes and his accuracy has to be nearly perfect because it takes so long for the ball to get there. Backup Kellen Clemens is the QB of the future. He has better physical skills and arm strength, but he’s not quite ready to take over. Ex-Raider Marques Tuiasosopo will fill the No. 3 role and has solid NFL experience. Even if Pennington struggles in 2007, it is unlikely Eric Mangini would make a midseason change. …Nice to see Pennington complimented. He

2007-07-09 16:59:33
The New York Jets have signed NFL Europa tight end Iiro Luoto of Helsinki, according to Hoss Aultman of JetsConfidential. Luoto played this last season for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europa. Previously, he played five years for the Helsinki Roosters of the Finnish Football league. He is 6-5, 257 pounds. Luoto spent five years playing football in Finland with the Helsinki Roosters. He then played in 9 games for the World Champion Frankfurt Galaxy during the 2006 NFL Europa season and caught five passes for 39 yards for the Rhein Fire in 2007.

Top-5 Players At Each Position
2007-07-08 10:45:52
Pete Prisco of CBS Sportsline let out a list of who he believes are the top-5 players at each position in the NFL. The New York Jets have 3 players in the list, 2 defensive players and one offensive. 1. Olin Kreutz, Chicago 2. Nick Mangold, N.Y. Jets: In his rookie season, he showed why he will be a perennial Pro Bowl player. 1. Brian Urlacher, Chicago 2. Jonathan Vilma, N.Y. Jets: He was supposed to be hurt by the Jets’ move to a 3-4, and he was. At times it seemed he was lost out there. Still, he produced a team-high 116 tackles, the second consecutive year he led the Jets. He’s athletic. He’s a sure tackler. And he’s outstanding in coverage. 1. Ed Reed, Baltimore 2. Brian Dawkins, Philadelphia 3. Adrian Wilson, Arizona 4. Dawan Landry, Baltimore 5. Kerry Rhodes, N.Y. Jets: He’s a secret outside of New York, but that won’t last. Rhodes has great size, good range and good speed. He’s also fluid, able to turn out of his backpedal to cover a de

ESPN Showing The Jets Some Respect
2007-07-06 16:30:00
In ESPN’s latest power rankings, Matt Mosley has the Jets checking in at 8th overall. 8. Jets-OK, here’s where I’m going to lose a lot of you guys, but bear with me. This team made it to the playoffs last season with a rookie head coach and some pretty lackluster rankings on offense and defense. I think the addition of running back Thomas Jones will have the Jets looking at an 11-win season. ..Personally, I like this ranking. It may be a little high, but I agree that we are a top-10 team. The Jets have gotten better since last season’s 10-6 record. Thomas Jones is huge for our offense, D’Brick and Mangold have a year under their belt and should improve, Pennington appears to be back at full-strength, and everyone is more familiar with Schottenheimer’s playbook. Hopefully our defense can step up also…

Vinny Is Returning For His 21st Season
2007-07-13 22:43:32
According to the Boston Globe, former Jets QB Vinny Testaverde who played as a backup quarterback for the New England last year will return to the Patriots this season. Testaverde is now in his 21st season at age 43, played with the Jets between 1998-2003 and then again in 2005. He currently has a record of 20 consecutive seasons with a passing touchdown. …If the Patriots do decide to carry three quarterbacks during the season, this could mean the Patriots may cut one of the 100 receivers on their roster… …I love the heart and will to play, but you just have got to know when to hang it up. He was put into the Jets final game versus the Patriots on Monday Night Football in 2005 and ran the offense down the field for a touchdown in what many thought to be his last hurrah in the NFL. However, that became a myth when soon after, Testaverde signed with the Patriots in 2006…

Peters Heads Home To Give Back
2007-07-13 14:37:38
In the Honolulu Advertiser, Stephen Tsai talks with Jets safety Leonard Peters about his time in NY with the Jets as well as going back home to Hawaii to serve as a special guest instructor at the Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinic at the university of Hawaii athletic complex. On being a special instructor for the speed and quickness clinic… I always like helping the kids,” Peters said. “Some of them have been going (to the clinic) for several years. It’s like watching them grow up. I’m happy to go back and see how those kids progressed, how they got better in running and jumping. On being nervous at team workouts… It’s a big step in life,” he said. “The biggest thing between pro and college football is in college you have four years to learn the system. In the NFL, you’ve got one day to learn the system. If they don’t like what they see, they’ll ship you out. In a half hour, they’ll have a replacement for

Breaking Down The AFC East
2007-07-13 13:42:20
NFL Gridiron Gab has broken down the AFC East and put out their predictions on each team in the division. Here is what they have on the Jets: New York 2007 Prediction: 9-7 - The Jets rose from the dead last year in a season in which they stunned many by winning 10 games. Over the last five seasons, the Jets have always followed up good seasons with bad ones (9 wins in 02, 6 in 03, 10 wins in 04, 4 in 05), so this means this season they should be in the 5-6 range if history is right. I don’t buy it. While they are still a few players away from beating the Pats, this group got better with the trade for RB Thomas Jones and getting free agent Andre Wadsworth at defensive end. Chad Pennington should be solid again, and with Jones and starting wide outs Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, the Jets should contend for a wild card. …9-7 seems reasonable. I also feel the Jets will be around the 9-10 win plateau. I don’t look at Wadsworth as being a overwhelming addition to thi

2007-07-13 12:23:46
TheJetsBlog.com notes that the Jets have activated running back Curtis Martin off of the physically unable to perform list. This is believed to be the final move before we see a formal announcement by the New York Jets and Curtis Martin regarding his announcement from the league. Martin currently ranks 4th on the all-time rushing list with 14,101 yards and is tied for 12th with Eric Dickerson on the all-time rushing touchdown list with 90 touchdowns. In addition to terrific rushing numbers, Martin also has 404 receptions, 3329 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns out of the backfield. Martin is one of only two running backs in NFL History to rush for at least 1,000 yards in 10 consecutive season with hall of famer Barry Sanders being the only other to do so.

Odd Jets Story Of The Week

The Jets get mention when Storm talks about what football games he had watched when talking to Mickelson.

Various sources are reporting that the San Diego Chargers selected Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver in the fourth round. Jets Showing Strong Interest In OL Chris Patrick
2007-07-12 01:10:27
According to Scout.com, the Jets are showing strong interest in offensive lineman Chris Patrick for the Supplemental Draft. In addition to the Jets, the Vikings, Saints and Texans also are showing strong interest in the young Nebraska offensive lineman. Chris Patrick/OL/University of Nebraska: According to a league source, a top AFC team has actually given Patrick a fourth-round grade but because they have quality depth at the position, that team is unlikely to select him tomorrow. The Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Jets have shown strong interest in the former Cornhusker. The Jets bear watching. They are unlikely to use a pick in the draft to select Patrick but could make a run at him if he becomes a free agent. With the Pete Kendall situation unsettled, Patrick, a left tackle in college who projects to guard in the NFL, could be attractive to the team.

Jets Sign WR Juan Wong
2007-07-16 18:19:38
The New York Jets have announced the signing of free agent wide receiver Juan Wong. Wong returned for a second season in NFL Europa after being assigned to Hamburg at the conclusion of the 2007 international mini-camp. He finished the regular season with one reception for 11 yards and helped Hamburg to their first-ever World Bowl appearance. Wong recorded one reception for 26 yards in the Sea Devils 37-28 victory over the Frankfurt Galaxy. In 2006, he played for the Rhein Fire and caught three passes for 77 yards and one touchdown. …I’m feeling the Super Bowl now…

Three Steps For Training Camp
2007-07-16 10:55:21
USAToday offers a look at a preview of training camps in the AFC East. They note three of each team’s priorities. Here is what they have on tap for the Jets. 1. Resolve the Pete Kendall situation It’s rare that an offensive lineman is the focus of attention at spring minicamp, but that’s what happened to the Jets in June. Their contract dispute with the veteran left guard was the major story during the spring, and nothing has been settled yet. Kendall, scheduled to make $1.7 million this season, wants a raise of $1 million. The Jets seem to be taking the stance that they don’t re-negotiate contracts, although sources indicate they gave WR Laveranues Coles an extra $1 million during the 2006 campaign. Obviously, they believe Kendall, who will be 34 by opening day, is expendable. The most likely scenario is that if they can’t trade him, they will release him very early in camp so that his potential successors can get maximum reps. If Kendall departs, it also

Training Camp: Players To Watch For - WR Frisman Jackson
2007-07-16 00:14:40
WR Frisman Jackson Frisman Jackson signed a future contract with the New York Jets on January 11th. Like many others, Jackson comes to the Jets to attempt to revitalize his career here in New York. Jackson who made the Cleveland Browns roster as an undrafted free agent in 2002, playing mostly special teams in his first season with the team. In the following season, Jackson suffered an ankle injury during the offseason that caused him to be placed on the physically unable to perform list for the first nine weeks of the season. He returned to the 53-man roster and saw time in five regular season games in 2003. During the 2004 season, Jackson started to see more time as a receiver catching 13 balls for 168 yards, while appearing in 10 games. Finally in the 2005 season, Jackson had a nice start to season catching 8 balls for 128 yards with a touchdown in the season opener. However, he didn’t quite finish the season with those types of numbers weekly. Jackson finished the season with 24

Training Camp: Players To Watch For - TE Jason Pociask
2007-07-18 23:59:49
Jason Pociask The New York Jets selected tight end Jason Pociask in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Pociask played in 41 games for Wisconsin earning 12 receptions for 144 yards over three seasons for the Badgers. Pociask didn’t possess any eye-popping numbers at Wisconsin as he was not the starter in his senior season. He is more known for his ability to block defenders rather than catch the ball. An added bonus to Pociask is that he has the ability to line up at various positions on the gridiron. He could be used in an H-Back role much like Stacy Tutt or Sean Ryan from last season. Sean Ryan was used as a blocking tight end but would continuously be in motion and end up in the backfield as a fullback on multiple plays. With Ryan back with the team this season and with Chris Baker on the roster, you wonder if the team will be willing to carry Pociask if he doesn’t perform well in training camp and preseason. Pociask was signed by the Jets just prior to training camp

Giants Sign Supplemental Draft Prospect Patrick
2007-07-18 01:33:15
According to the Star-Ledger, the New York Giants have signed supplemental undrafted offensive lineman Chris Patrick of Nebraska. Big Blue signed Patrick to a two-year contract at league minimum salary. The New York Jets were reportedly interested in Patrick if he went undrafted in the Supplemental Draft with the Pete Kendall issue still up in the air. The Jets were looking to bring him in for a workout in the future, however he had an impressive workout with the Giants today and signed with them. …I would have liked to see what Patrick could have done on the field, especially with a potential hole at left guard with the whole Kendall mess. The Giants have told him he will play on the left side of the offensive line…
