Health benefits of beauty treatment
2007-07-03 04:54:00
Pioneering medical research is going on at the University of Leicester into the use of Botulinum toxin - commonly thought of as a beauty treatment – for bladder problems.Dr Douglas Tincello, Senior Lecturer at the University's Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine and Consultant Gynaecologist at the Leicester General Hospital, is carrying out a randomised trial involving injecting botulinum toxin into the bladders of women who have overactive bladder disease. The trial, which has received a grant of £158,000 from the Moulton Charitable Trust, involves women whose conditions have not improved after tablet treatment.Overactive bladder is a condition in which the bladder tries to empty itself, rather than the patient retaining control. Symptoms include having to pass water very often day and night, not being able to put off the need to do so, sudden urgency to pass water and sometimes incontinence. The botulinum toxin relaxes the bladder muscle so it cannot squeeze so hard

TV's beauty makeovers mask ugly truths
2007-07-03 04:53:00
From drooping eyelids and sagging breasts to cleft palates and stained teeth, the makeover experts on the ABC reality show Extreme Makeover have never met a physical imperfection they couldn't correct.Philosophy professor Cressida Heyes argues that, for all the beautification that takes place on the show, there are some ugly truths at its core. The cosmetic surgery makeover show is relatively new to the TV landscape. Heyes, a University of Alberta professor who has published an analysis of Extreme Makeover in Feminist Media Studies, says viewers should be attuned to the values being promoted by these shows.Radical makeover programs like Extreme Makeover, The Swan and Ten Years Younger sell the idea that cosmetic surgery is not about vanity but about uncovering your "authentic self." Heyes argues that they are actually working hard to enforce conformity to society's ideals regarding gender, age, class and race.

Fashionable and Stylish: Do They Go Together?
2007-07-03 04:53:00
Fashion and style. Do they mean one and the same thing?According to specialists in the field, fashion is actually a synonym for style or glamour. It has been agreed on the fact that fashion is a way of personal expression, and according to this criteria, one can be fashionable when he/she fits in this expression mode, or unfashionable, which would be the opposite. Fashion has manifestations in all the fields of human activity, that is when can speak about fashion when we refer to topics such as architecture, clothing, music, cosmetics, entertainment, forms of speech or even politics or technology. Anything in these fields can be described as being fashionable or not. When one speaks about materialism or trend s using the term 'fashion', it can be associated with a negative meaning. Most people today perceive fashion as a term referring mostly to clothes. The beginnings of what we call fashion today did actually refer to clothes and they go back as far as the sixteenth century. However

Smoking linked with aging on skin that usually is not exposed to sunlight
2007-07-03 04:53:00
In classic movies, cigarette smoking was used as shorthand to convey sultriness and beauty. In the real world, the connection between smoking and one's appearance – as many studies have shown – has more to do with premature signs of skin aging and less to do with glamour and refinement.A new study from the University of Michigan Health System adds another dimension to the link between cigarette smoking and skin damage. The study suggests that smoking may be associated with a higher degree of aging on areas of skin, such as that of the inside of the upper arm, that are not normally exposed to sunlight."We examined non-facial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced," says Yolanda R. Helfrich, M.D., lead author and assistant professor of dermatology at the U-M Medical School. The study appears in the March issue of

Physicians may be obstacles to breast reconstruction
2007-07-03 04:46:00
Significant differences in plastic surgery referral practices by general surgeons treating newly diagnosed breast cancer patients partially explain the low rates of breast reconstructive surgery in the United States, according to a new study. Published in the May 1, 2007 issue of CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study suggests that only one quarter of general surgeons refer most breast cancer patients for a reconstruction consultation at the time of treatment planning.Despite the fact that insurance covers the procedure, only 16 percent of breast cancer patients treated with a mastectomy receive breast reconstruction in the US. Studies have shown that age and race predict low rates of this reconstructive procedure. However, studies also suggest that healthcare providers have an impact on utilization through their referral and information sharing practices.Dr. Amy Alderman from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and co-investigators surveyed 456 g

Presence Of Hair In Skin Lesion Does Not Make It Benign
2007-07-03 04:46:00
Skin Lesions and HairThe presence of one or more hairs in a pigmented skin lesion does not guarantee that it is benign, according to a report in the March Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology."The presence of hair in a pigmented lesion should not automatically mean that the lesion under investigation is benign," Dr. Ashfaq A. Marghoob from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York told Reuters Health. "One needs to evaluate the primary morphology of the lesion in question and base one's decision on that."Dr. Marghoob and associates sought to dispel the myth of the "benign hair sign" by reporting 3 cases of melanocytic lesions that showed terminal hairs on clinical and dermoscopic evaluation, but in which the final diagnosis was invasive melanoma. In all 3 cases, terminal hair shafts could be clearly seen to protrude from the tumor, the authors report. Nevertheless, clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological examination confirmed the presence of invasive melanoma."Thi

Breakthrough Surgical Procedure Results In No Scars, Minimal Pain
2007-07-03 04:43:00
No-Scar SurgeryProfessor Jacques Marescaux and his team successfully performed the world's first no-scar surgery. This first human operation without abdominal incisions was carried out using a flexible endoscope for transvaginal removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) in a 30-year-old woman suffering from multiple pain episodes due to gallstones. This breakthrough surgical procedure, called Operation Anubis, exemplifies the evolution of surgery. The operation consists of gallbladder removal performed without scars on the abdominal wall. Using a flexible endoscope inserted into the abdominal cavity through an incision on the vaginal wall, the gallbladder is removed using an endoscopic retrieval bag. The only "invasion" to the abdominal wall consisted of a 2mm needle equipped with a video camera system. This needle also served for gas insufflation, which is necessary to create a working space within the abdomen and to monitor the intrabdominal pressure throughout the procedure. The be

Sunny Beaches Are Not Good For Hair Style
2007-07-03 04:43:00
Summer Beach Vacation and Hairstyle CareSummer vacations at beaches are the most desirable vacations for all, but not for our hair. Shiny sun and salty water cause difficulties to our hair. Therefore, we need to be very watchful to protect our hair and keep the hairstyle. Most of us have noticed that our hair don't shine brightly during summer time. This is because sun dries upper adipose layer of hair and disturbs albuminous balance. Salty water also has bad impact on hair, especially during vacations when we swim regularly and stay under sun. These two factors together make hair fragile, dull, especially hair tips. Hair almost stop shining because of uneven surface, they loose flexibility and become very easy to break. So this is not only a problem of pretty looking hair, this is a serious problem of hair health, and we need to take care of it.The first thing we need to do to have healthy hair is to protect them from direct sun rays - wear head gear. Nowadays we have a big choice of

Hair Loss Treatment May Be On The Way As Research Grows New Hair In Mice
2007-07-03 04:40:00
Hair loss treatment may be possibleScientists say they have stimulated the growth of new hair in mice, disproving a long-held belief that it is not possible to correct baldness in adults.Scientists say they did it through the creation of new follicles, microscopic "mini-organs" in the skin that produce hair strands.Experts say that people suffer hair loss, because the follicles shrink and eventually disappear with age. But they discovered they can stimulate the growth of new hair-producing follicles in mice by damaging their skin.George Cotsarelis, an investigative dermatologist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, says researchers used an abrasive technique similar to one used on humans to remove facial acne scars, except that they used the technique on the skin of laboratory mice."These follicles actually form from scratch," he said. "They're not there and then they develop from epidermal cells that normally don't make hair follicles."In the study, the abrasion ca

First Demonstration Of Hair Follicle Generation In Animal Model
2007-07-03 04:40:00
Hair FollicleHair follicles in adult mice regenerate by re-awakening genes once active only in developing embryos. These findings provide unequivocal evidence for the first time that, like other animals such as newts and salamanders, mammals have the power to regenerate. These findings are published in the May 17 issue of Nature.A better understanding of this process could lead to novel treatments for hair loss, other skin and hair disorders, and wounds."We showed that wound healing triggered an embryonic state in the skin which made it receptive to receiving instructions from wnt proteins," says senior author George Cotsarelis, MD, Associate Professor of Dermatology. "The wnts are a network of proteins implicated in hair-follicle development."Researchers previously believed that adult mammal skin could not regenerate hair follicles. In fact, investigators generally believe that mammals had essentially no true regenerative qualities. (The liver can regenerate large portions, but it is

2007-07-03 04:39:00
Silicone ImplantsJust over half of ASPS Member Surgeons predict they will perform up to 25 percent more breast augmentations in the next 12 months and that 40 percent or more of all patients will choose silicone implants. These and other findings appear in a new report from an American Society of Plastic Surgeons' survey about the impact of the reintroduction of silicone breast implants.Breast augmentation became the top surgical cosmetic procedure in 2006 with an increase of 13 percent over 2005. Supporting this trend is the fact that 71 percent of plastic surgeons perform, on average, more than five breast augmentations a month. Further, 75 percent expect 3 to 10 percent of their patients will at some time replace their existing saline implants for silicone for purely cosmetic reasons."Plastic surgeons are receiving positive feedback from their breast augmentation patients since the approval of silicone implants. These interactions are creating an upbeat outlook for the future use o

Retinol lotion reduces the fine wrinkles from natural aging of skin
2007-07-03 04:39:00
Improve appearance of skinLotions containing retinol improve the appearance of skin that has become wrinkled through the normal aging process, not just skin that has been damaged by exposure to the sun, according to a new study from the University of Michigan Health System.Researchers tested lotion s containing retinol – Vitamin A that is found in many skin-care products – on the skin of elderly patients. Lotion containing retinol was used on one arm of each participant, while a lotion without retinol was applied to the other arm.Wrinkles, roughness and overall aging severity were all significantly reduced in the retinol-treated arm compared with the control arm, according to the study, which appears in the May issue of the journal Archives of Dermatology. The production of collagen, due to the retinol treatment, also makes it more likely that the skin can withstand injury and ulcer formation, researchers say."With the population aging so rapidly, it is important that we find ways o

Drug Agent May Help in Treatment of Severe Frostbite
2007-07-03 04:38:00
Frostbite treatmentA preliminary study suggests that a blood clot-dissolving medication that is administered to some patients following a stroke or heart attack may help to reduce the risk of amputation following severe frostbite, according to a report in the June issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.Frostbite treatment has remained essentially the same for the past 25 years, according to background information in the article. "Today, traditional therapy consists of tissue rewarming, prolonged watchful waiting and often delayed amputation," the authors write. "While many other areas of burns, trauma and critical care have advanced significantly in their treatment modalities, the saying 'Frostbite in January, amputate in July' is still relevant today."Kevin J. Bruen, M.D., and colleagues at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, studied the anti-clotting agent tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) for the treatment of frostbite beginning in 2001.
