When I was looking after two time Champion Chaser Viking Flagship back in 1995 he was going to run in the Victor Chandler Handicap Chase at Ascot.Flagship had been installed as favourite for the race on the strength of his two previous races when he won the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown Park and the Castle
ford Chase at Wetherby. Of course he was set to carry plenty of weight, 12 stone but he was the reigning Champion.The horse had been in great form in the build up to the race but during the week before he went lame on the gallops.By the time the horses got back in from first lot and Flagship had been diagnosed as having an abcess in his foot the press and bookmakers were on the phone wanting to know about the well-being of the horse.Who had tipped them off?Nicholson was in the south of France and he didn't know Viking Flagship was unsound until later in the day.Anyhow it was only three days before the race and it was panic stations at Jackdaws Castle. Peleid was an ordinary sort of two year old winning a modest race at York As a three year old he won a handicap at Liverpool in March and in May won the ten furlong Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar. At Royal Ascot Peleid was second in the King Geoege V Stakes In July, showing further steady improvement he won the ten and a half furlong John Smith's Magnet Cup at York. Then he was runner-up in the Prix de la Ville de Trouville at Deauville and then back at York was fourth in the Johnnie Walker Ebor Handicap carrying 8 stone 2 lb. His final race as a three year old was in the Doncaster St Leger ridden by Frankie Durr and starting at 28/1 won by two and a half lengths. In 1974 as a four year old he failed to win in Britain and was exported to Hungary winning the one and a half mile Great Breeders Prize and was then retired to stud in that country.
